Hakim, Abdelilah. "Analyse mathématique de modèles de fluides visco-élastiques de type White-Metzner." Paris 11, 1989. http://www.theses.fr/1989PA112397.

Abstract:
This work is concerned with the study of the flow of an incompressible viscoelastic fluid (fluid with memory) of White-Metzner type. •Because of the dependence of the viscosity and relaxation functions in the second invariant of the rate of deformation tensor, this models leads to a nonlinear (not quasilineair) partial differential equations system. This work consists in a theoretical part and a numerical one. In the theoretical part, we aim to establish several results on existence, uniqueness and stability concerning the aforementioned system. Firstly, under suitable hypothesis on the relaxation and viscosity functions, we prove the local existence and uniqueness of solution of the 2-D initial boundary value problem. Then we prove that these solutions are global provided the data are small. We also show the existence of small, stable periodic (resp. Steady) solutions corresponding to small periodic (resp. Steady) data. Second we study a special class of 1-D flows (shear flow), in particular its linear stability. The numerical part is devoted to the computation of the Poiseuille flow

Padhye, V. A. "A penalty finite element model for axisymmetric flows of power-law and white-metzner fluids." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/101358.

Full text
Abstract:
A finite element model based on the penalty function formulation of the equations governing unsteady axisymmetric flows of viscous incompressible fluids obeying power-law and White-Metzner constitutive relations is developed. The formulation accounts for inertial (or convective) terms. For power-law fluids, two different finite element models are developed: one based on the velocity formulation (i.e., only velocities as nodal variables) and the other based on a mixed formulation involving velocities and stress components. For the White-Metzner model, only the mixed model involving the velocities and extra stress components can be developed. The pressure variable does not enter the finite element model because of the application of the penalty method to introduce the incompressibility constraint. However, the pressure can be post-computed once the velocities are obtained. The finite element models are used to analyze several plane and axisymmetric flows of power-law and White-Metzner fluids. The effect of boundary conditions, power-law model, inertia terms on the velocity profiles is investigated. The numerical solutions agree, qualitatively, with the known experimental and numerical results. The finite element models developed here can be easily modified to include thermal effects and other constitutive models.

Abstract:
The Metznermachines placed at Scania, which is used for cutting and marking plastic pipes, has daily a large amount of disturbances. The current availability is not great enough for the current and future demands on the production. Therefore this project has been initiated to increase the availability and define the needed maintenance and competence. Through participant observation, analysis on historical errors and the programming and also contact with other production sites, with similar equipment, has the biggest disturbances and solutions for those been able to be defined. Mainly has problems connected to dereeling of new material, the printers and the programming been found. Apart from that has flaws in the maintenance, both by operators and the maintenance department, been observed..Changes in the design, programming and maintenance has resulted in big reductions, both in frequency and effect, for the biggest disturbances. This has resulted in an availability at 98.3 % in March when all changes had been implemented. The maintenance has been redirected against a more condition based maintenance to enable earlier detection of problems and reduce the need for corrective maintenance. The maintenance has been divided, based on total productive maintenance, so that the production and maintenance department will work closer together and therefore be able to benefit from each other’s competences and together contribute to a greater availability.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to test the Bean and Metzner Model of Nontraditional Student Attrition (1985) in a small, rural community college environment. The influence of selected sets of background, environmental, and academic variables from the model were tested, in addition to, the individual variables contained within each set. The differences between the persister and nonpersister groups were examined by variables.;Data was collected via the Student Entry Questionnaire and the Student Questionnaire. Everyone who came in for placement testing at Paul D. Camp Community College during the fall of 1991 (n = 148) completed the Student Entry Questionnaire. Based upon a discriminant analysis using all eighteen variables, the model did predict with 92% accuracy. Multiple regression was used to investigate the first four subsidiary questions.;The three statistically significant predictor variables of student attrition were commitment to attend Paul D. Camp Community College (PDCCC), opportunity to transfer, and student's educational goals. In the stepwise regression procedure, commitment to attend PDCCC accounted for over 31% of the variance (R{dollar}\sp2{dollar} =.3140). Opportunity to transfer was the next best predictor variable that added over 2% more to the prediction accuracy (R{dollar}\sp2{dollar} =.0273). The third strongest predictor was student's educational goals which added just over 3% to the prediction (R{dollar}\sp2{dollar} =.0307).;The background and defining variable set provided the most powerful prediction value followed by the environmental variable set. None of the academic variables were found to be significant. There was not a significant interactional effect between the academic and environmental variable sets for predicting attrition.;This study reported the differences between the persister and nonpersister groups according to the eighteen variables examined found from using T-tests. This study presented suggestions and strategies for reducing the negative impact of these factors.;Further study is needed to ascertain the difference between student perception in response to the variables and actual behavior. Follow-up studies of a longitudinal design would increase the efficiency of the model.

Full text
Abstract:
Current literature has limited information on the design of the thermal exchange area of tanks with jacket, helical coil, spiral coil and vertical tuber baffle, in operation with non-Newtonian fluids. The main purpose of this thesis was to analyze heat transfer, power consumption and scale-up in tanks with mechanical impellers in the agitation of non-Newtonian fluids with two heat transfer surfaces, vertical tube baffle and spiral coil. The work also aimed to provide methods of scale-up tank scale with agitation for non-Newtonian fluids that follow the rheology model of the law of powers. The experimental unit included two acrylic tanks, with a volume of 10 liters and 50 liters, respectively, vertical tube baffles and spiral coil. The mechanical impellers used were the 45° pitched blade turbine (PBT) and the Rushton turbine (RT). Aqueous solutions of carboxymethylcellulose (0.5%, 1.0% and 1.5%), aqueous solution of carbopol 940 (1.5%), aqueous solution of sucrose (50%) and water were used as fluids. All the experiments were conducted in batch. With the obtained data, we used the regressions to obtain the Nusselt Equation, which provided coefficient of determination values adjusted between 0.83 and 0.89 with Reynolds in the range of 20 to 405000, Prandtl in the range of 4 to 6400 and rheological index of the power law model between 0.45 and 1.00. It was observed that in the heating performed with the vertical tube baffle, the RT provided convection coefficients 20% higher when compared to the axial impeller, however the power consumption was about 66% higher in relation to the PBT. In the case of the spiral coil, the PBT promoted convection coefficients around 15% higher than the RT with 65% lower power consumption. Thus, in processes where high turbulence is not required, it is recommended to use the PBT with the spiral coil, but if the process requires significant turbulence, the RT must be used with the vertical tubular chassis. In a final analysis, the nonlinear models obtained for scaling provided errors between 11% and 20% in the prediction of rotation in the industrial tank, which are valid for Metzner and Otto (1957) modified Reynolds in the range of 20 to 4000 and for non-Newtonian pseudoplastic fluids with rheological indexes between 0.45 and 1.00.

Abstract:
When calculating scattering amplitudes in gauge and gravitational theories one encounters infrared (IR) divergences associated with massless fields. These are known to be artifacts of constructing a quantum field theory starting with free fields, and the assumption that in the asymptotic limit (i.e. well before and after a scattering event) the incoming and outgoing states are non-interacting. In 1937, Bloch and Nordsieck provided a technical procedure eliminating the IR divergences in the cross-sections. However, this did not address the source of the problem: A detailed analysis reveals that, in quantum electrodynamics (QED) and in perturbative quantum gravity (PQG), the interactions cannot be ignored even in the asymptotic limit. This is due to the infinite range of the massless force-carrying bosons. By taking these asymptotic interactions into account, one can find a picture changing operator that transforms the free Fock states into asymptotically interacting Faddeev- Kulish (FK) states. These FK states are charged (massive) particles surrounded by a “cloud” of soft photons (gravitons) and will render all scattering processes infrared finite already at an S-matrix level. Recently it has been found that the FK states are closely related to asymptotic symmetries. In the case of QED the FK states are eigenstates of the large gauge transformations – U(1) transformations with a non-vanishing transformation parameter at infinity. For PQG the FK states are eigenstates of the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) transformations – the asymptotic symmetry group of an asymptotically flat spacetime. It also appears that the FK states are related the Wilson lines in the Mandelstam quantization scheme. This would allow one to obtain the physical FK states through geometrical or symmetry arguments. We attempt to clarify this relation and present a derivation of the FK states in PQG from the gravitational Wilson line in the eikonal approximation, a result that is novel to this thesis.
