Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Most literature frequently ignores the essential role that science and modern technology play in shaping current societies and how we live in them. Around 150 years ago, Jules Verne started to become aware of the need to actively include science and technology in modern narratives. He named it «the science novel». Later, the literary genre of science fiction seemed to reach the point which Jules Verne’s science novel had pioneered. In this regard, science fiction posits itself as a suitable narrative to learn about the future, as it describes worlds which are possible due to science and technology.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the main narrative underlining female members of the Campus Propagation Institute (LDK) at several universities in Yogyakarta in dealing with polygamy. This paper argues that narration has an important role in shaping the perception of LDK female members of polygamy. The use of the Narrative Master’s theoretical framework with the method of data collection through interview techniques, found three main narratives that form three groups of interpretations of polygamy, namely the imbalance of the ratio of male and female populations (pro-polygamy groups); Sarah and Ibrahim (pro-polygamy conditional group); and Khadijah Loyalty (counter-polygamy group). This paper also explains how the narratives are used as an ideological foundation. In addition, this research also becomes one of the affirmations that there is actually a growing conservative discourse among women activists of LDK.Tulisan ini mendiskusikan tentang narasi utama yang melandasi anggota perempuan Lembaga Dakwah Kampus (LDK) di beberapa universitas di Yogyakarta dalam menyikapi poligami.

Abstract:
In 1897, Jules Verne’s novel An antarctic mystery was published both in periodical form and as a complete book. It is a continuation of Edgar Allan Poe’s story The narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket (1838). In this article, we will use the plots of both novels to show the different images of science and technology presented by the two authors. We address both Verne’s and Poe’s approach to science, as conveyed through their fictional stories. We also discuss how Verne’s scientific descriptions are much more extensive than Poe’s, a testament to Verne’s rational and learned character, as opposed to Poe’s more fantastic and imaginative approach to science.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The dissertation investigates Arab-Muslim migrant women’s experiences and meanings of parenting in Italy, from a pedagogical perspective. The study originates from observations of a selection of places of encounter and exchange between women, as well as the collection of life stories of mothers of Moroccan or Egyptian origin living in Milan. The aim is to explore their experiences as migrant women-mothers and their representations of parenting and education. The increase in stabilization of migration projects in communities of Arab origin, and the resulting increasing number of women with children in Italian educational contexts (Giacomello et al., 2018a, 2018b; Simina Duma et al., 2018a), together with the spread of prejudices, Islamophobic feelings and discriminatory episodes, especially against Arab-Muslim women (Dessi, 2016; Liepyte & McAloney-Kocaman, 2015; Lunaria, 2019; Perry, 2014), show the urgency to examine parenting in connection with the experience of migration for these groups of women from a pedagogical perspective. From a theoretical point of view, the dissertation is seen in the context of contemporary educational studies on the construction of migrant parenthood (E. Balsamo et al., 2002; Favaro & Colombo, 1993; Iavarone et al., 2015; Portera, 2004; Silva, 2006, 2008; Webb, 2001). It also expands on previous educational research analyzing migration through the gender prism (Cambi et al., 2003a; Campani, 2000; Donato et al., 2006; Favaro & Tognetti Bordogna, 1991; Morokvasic, 1984b; Pessar, 1984; Ulivieri, 2017; Vianello, 2013, 2014). Finally, it develops some indications of method emerging from the tradition of research in family education, specifically concerning parenting support (Catarsi, 2006; Dusi, 2007; Formenti, 2000, 2008; Gopnik, 2017; Milani, 2001, 2009, 2018, Sità, 2005, 2007). In light of these references, field research aimed to: investigate the experiences and meanings of parenting for the women-mothers involved in the research; delve into its formative dimension by determining risk factors and resources in their stories; deduce guiding criteria to re-interpret the construct of parenting and parenting support programs and to develop methodological strategies to approach otherness. Methodologically, the study is based on the tradition of qualitative research in education (Bove, 2009c; Cardano, 2003; Caronia, 1997, 2011; Denzin & Lincoln, 2005; Lumbelli, 1980, 1995; Mantovani, 1998b; Mortari & Ghirotto, 2019). In particular, it positions itself in the wake of recent empirical research in education, adopting ethnographic methodologies (Bove, 2009c, 2019; Caronia, 2018; Caronia & Vassallo, 2015; Gobbo, 2004b, 2011; Leoncini, 2011; Sclavi, 1989; Tobin, 2016; Tobin et al., 2000, 2011), along with others exploring the narrative-biographical dimension (Cambi, 2002; D’Ignazi, 2008, 2016, Demetrio, 1996, 2004; Ferrarotti, 1981; Formenti, 2006; Mantovani, 1998a; Merrill & West, 2012). This research highlights some relevant emerging topics, such as: gender issues between the country of origin and migration; being a mother amongst cultural meanings, migration and cultural transmission; the social support network; the relationship with educational institutions; cultural, religious, and multiple identities. In the area of parenting support, the pedagogical discussion of research findings suggests the adoption of a resources and skills-based approach and the use of methods, and tools derived from ethnography.

RIGAMONTI, ALESSANDRA. "Apprendere dai ritmi.

Full text
Abstract:
Foster care is a complex and temporary process in which many actors (children, social workers, birthparents, foster families, social and health agencies, court) are involved, interacting and learning by their explicit and implicit temporalities intertwined with systemic, social and cultural dimensions. Thus, the concept of rhythm has been used in this work to illuminate the complexity, composition and coordination of these embodied and simultaneous processes. From a pedagogical view, this research will investigate rhythm, as an analytical and practical category in foster care: how does it affect and is affected by foster care processes? These research questions are aimed at outlining a theory/model of rhythm in foster care processes, apt to inspire useful and innovative professional training for professionals in foster care. A narrative, participatory and interpretative methodological framework guides the research. Semi-structured interviews with 18 researchers and professionals were used to explore their representations and the pertinence of the concept of rhythm in thinking about foster cares. A second study was based on a co-operative inquiry with 12 practitioners, aimed at illuminating the frames of meaning and implicit theories, as well as practical implications, regarding the temporal dimensions which may sustain, hinder or transform individual, relational and institutional rhythms. A main line of reflection from the analysis of data concerns the presence of antagonistic, contradictory, and complementary rhythms in foster care. These rhythmic polarities sustain the recognition of complexity, the composition and the overcoming of the opposing dimensions, towards the coordination of temporal dimensions and their effects in foster care.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore the application of the narrative method The Tree of Life as a career guidance instrument and to investigate the career counselling contexts in which the method could be most usable. As research strategy, we have chosen to perform a case study without intervention with four individual interviews as data collection method. The results show that the interviewees share common features regarding the fundamental purpose and the evaluation of the method The Tree of Life. They argue that the method helps to strengthen individuals’ belief in their own abilities. Through better self-knowledge individuals may perceive their life as more meaningful and they may get more opportunities to explore themselves and their dreams. The method itself is described as both philosophical and creative, which means that it cannot be applied automatically by all the counsellors and within every kind of target groups. The study shows that the method’s potential is better exploited when the counsellor succeeds in creating the appropriate sense of safeness within the group so that the participants can fully share the stories of their lives and get feedback from the others. According to the collected data, the method is considered to have its greatest potential for development in the work with children, who on the other hand have been its peculiar target group, since the method was developed in 2005. Nevertheless, the interviewees could see the method as applicable also within other target groups. They have referred in particular to young people who are neither in education nor in employment, to young people who live in a difficult family background, to unaccompanied refugee children, to newly arrived immigrants, and to youth who for various reasons are not able to fulfil their course of education.

Abstract:
There are a few storytelling methods for video games. The most common forms are linear and branching narratives, but there is one method not used to the same extent, known as emergent narrative. This study uses and artifact to explore emergent narrative using systems known as Drama Managers that aim to control the sequence of events in a game to create a narrative. The purpose of the study was to explore if a simplified drama manager could produce emergent narratives. The conclusion is that elements of emergence could be identified, but the artifact could not be considered to contain an emergent narrative. This knowledge could be used to help define the difference between emergent and branching narratives.

Abstract:
The overall aim of this essay has been to contribute to a deeper understanding of self-help on the Internet by illuminating the individual's awareness and interaction with others. The study's subject of research has been seven individual life stories found on a newsgroup on the Internet and was implemented with a narrative research method and a hermeneutic approach. The study is qualitative in its nature and the individual's behavior and self-perceived reality has been the main focus. The theory that has been applied in the study is the pragmatic micro perspective symbolic interactionism with the following theoretical starting points: symbols, displacement, deprived of identity and mutual aid. The thematic structure of the analysis has been based on the study’s three research questions of which the first theme highlighted displacement and deprived of identity as the two main themes in the life stories. The second theme dealt with the importance of group membership, which clearly showed that the newsgroup means a great deal for strengthening their personal identity. The third theme revealed that the changes in lifestyle and habits have been both psychological and physical. Whether or not the spatial separation many informants made from their parents can measure up to an emotional separation that they have not yet reached were discussed and lastly an implication that a combination of professional help such as therapy and newsgroup as a supplement may be a good method to reach the emotional separation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Many of the injuries occurring in equestrian sports are often caused by some form of trauma (Havlik, 2010) and they often results in a serious injury. The psychological reactions that equestrian riders may experience are multifaceted and the rehabilitation process and the result is often a result of the rider's cognitive appraisal of the injury (Wiese-Bjorn Stal, Smith, Shaffer & Morrey, 1998). The purpose of this study was from a holistic perspective (1) create an understanding of the psychological reaction a equestrian rider may feel after having suffered a serious sport-related injury, (2) understand how their experience of the rehabilitation process affected their cognitive appraisal, and (3) understand the factors that helped/did not help them get back to equestrian-sport. A qualitative approach through narrative interviews were used and the analysis was holistic-content (II), holistic-form (III) and critical narrative analysis (VI). Two equestrian riders who made a comeback to equestrian-sport after a serious injury participated. The result of the holistic-content analysis was reported according to the study questions. The result of the holistic-form analysis indicate 4 turning points in the rider A's story and the 5 turning points in the rider B's story. The critical narrative analysis illustrates that rider A and B described themselves in relation to 3 different themes. The results are discussed in relation to the theoretical framework and previous research.

Abstract:
This research investigates, from a clinical perspective, the processes of adhesion to evangelical Protestant religions (that of Pentecostal Christians in particular). In France, this religious fact is growing and developing among immigrant populations. Historically, Evangelicalism installs itself in socially disadvantaged backgrounds and shows the polymorphic and adaptive capacity to espouse cultural singularities and accord itself to the subjectivity processes of different groups. It’s a transcultural phenomenon that relies on Christian notions such as conversion and gifts of the Holy Spirit (glossolalia, prophecy, cure with the hands, etc.). In order to study the psychic work involved in adhesion to evangelical Protestantism, we first consider the social sciences, which since their foundation have explored religious phenomenon and their psychological components. The bibliographical exploration about the Protestant Reformation and Evangelism underlines the importance of conversion, to which expressions such as “born again” or “become another person” are frequently repeated by evangelicals. We consider conversion as a religious technique of biographical re-creation. Then, from a psychodynamic (psychoanalytical) standpoint, we review psychopathology and psychoanalytic literature in their views of religion and religiosity: the fundamental milestone is that the religious object is anchored in the foundations of the psychic life. We have interviewed converted persons (some of them had been treated by psychosocial professionals) so as to analyze their narratives and discursive activities with methods and theories from hermeneutic phenomenology and narrative psychology. We conclude our discussion by addressing the relevance of reflecting about the psychopathology of the religious fact, which we identify as an ethical and epistemological disposition for the clinician. Concurrently, this research suggests a need for more hospitality towards this religious object, which is present in the pathos and in the psychic work of the construction of the “self” in language

Abstract:

Abstract:
he purpose of this thesis is to introduce narrative as a comparative operator for the study of clinical cases. We assume that psychoanalysis, throughout history, has constructed and reformulated its concepts through the articulation between the clinical method and the psychotherapeutic practices, producing a narrative experience: a modality of language that articulates discourse and history. We understand that the construction of this experience was only possible due to the paradigmatic changes that psychoanalysis has undergone, constantly reformulating its methods of observation, intervention and rationality. The narrative, as a procedure of practical theories that does not exclude the history of its formalization, would be the main operator to indicate these paradigmatic transformations that, in the thesis, are presented from the analysis of the construction of three Freudian clinical cases: Dora, Rat Man and Schreber and of the Interviews with Patients of Lacan, that took place in the Sainte-Anne hospital. This analysis, carried out in an interdisciplinary way, presents, in Freudian cases, the relation between literature, theory and history for the construction of the case and its transformative movements. In the patients interviews we have the articulation of different materials for the interviews: records, previous interviews by doctors, anamneses and passages by other institutions that are used by Lacan to narrate the discourse brought by the patient, articulating the relations between the public and the private (or intimacy), thus providing coherence and transmission of experience to these discourses. In this sense, while in Freud we have the clinical case as a function of transmission and theoretical construction, in the Interviews of Patients of Lacan we have the narrativity as an element of therapeutic intervention with the presentation of language as method and object in psychoanalysis. In both Freud and Lacan, these operations were only made possible by the articulation between language and transference, which makes the clinical case a proof of the relations between the necessary, the possible, the impossible and the contingent in psychoanalysis

Abstract:
AbstractVisual autofiction can be seen as a storytelling method used by contemporary visual artists to initiate cultural inclusion within a field that has historically favored Western narratives and excluded many others. This chapter, which builds on theoretical reflections on autofiction, contends that contemporary artists endeavor to be culturally included in broad, decolonized visual narratives, through the use of innovative visual autofictional methods to represent their experiences. In the case of South African visual artist Bontle Tau, autofiction is used as a strategy to construct a multiform and multifaceted photographic narrative that foregrounds the diversity of selves and stories, further supporting the overall aim of cultural inclusion within representations in the field.

Abstract:
Various experimental techniques are used in child language studies to research the development of coherent and cohesive narrative. The most common of them are the elicitation narrative tasks based on a series of pictures or on a video, for example, a cartoon. However, the comparison of the studies carried out using different methods shows the results that can both coincide and significantly diverge. Among the factors that influence the basic narrative characteristics of elicited child stories are age, the type of visual stimulus, its length, and the way the narrative is produced (online vs. subsequent mode). The following basic characteristics are considered to study the structure of narratives: opening and closing markers, details and separateness of the narration, the variety of characters and the presence (absence) of evaluation. The question whether the type of visual stimulus has a significant effect on the basic characteristics of children’s narratives and whether it is possible to construct a general description of the development of narrative skills regardless of the experimental task chosen by the researchers is discussed with a comparative analysis of oral narratives collected within two series of experiments with Russian native monolingual children of the senior preschool and primary school age. The analysis showed that although it is possible to reveal some tendencies inherent in the narratives collected with different experimental methods, the type of visual stimulus does not have any statistically significant effect on the basic characteristics of the narratives of primary schoolchildren. Only the differences in evaluation and closing markers in the narratives of older preschoolers, elicited either simultaneously with watching the cartoon or during its subsequent retelling, are statistically significant. Abstract:
In this paper we aim to present a conceptual framework for virtual creation, exploration, and representation of architectural space. This framework will allow us to establish a method that will drive the viewer along a path, intended by the researcher, to experience, interact and get feedback of spaces in study, through linear or interactive narratives.Space virtual computational representation tools have evolved over the last decades and are now providing advanced new tools from gaming, AI and VR real-time complex fictional environments creation, depiction and interaction. From interior spaces to planetary systems, replicated or fictional, sets for all kinds of computer simulation models with immersive possibilities can be created and explored. In a linear visual narrative of a 3D animation the viewer is carried, without choice, by the flow of visual narrative storytelling, through several spaces, events, conclusions, expectations, premonitions, anticipations, empathy and characters and environments, fictional readings in dreamlike narratives, where reality and fantasy can be blended. In an interactive tale storytelling and script, the linearity would become in theoretically infinite lines of possible events and plots, with diverse endings, in which a narrative story line diverges in multiple plots.Having a set of formal parameterized elements within a grammatical lexicon that constitute and methodological approach to an architectural object in a study, it is intended to look at methods to experience, interact and get feedback of spaces in study, through visual multiple narratives, linear or interactive, being immersed or not. All these narrative approaches imply a script and visual grammars, storyline, and plot, where the player looks or travels through a fictional space, in a lived and experiential way.For conception and planning as for studying or research in the architectural field, this is an area of expertise to explore, as these new graphic computing tools can pursue new approaches, using several methods available to apply in each research, to provide analysis breakthroughs.

Abstract:
Background: Connected speech, an ecologically valid task, represents a valuable tool to support the detection of linguistic and cognitive impairment. Objective: First, to verify whether connected speech can differentiate oral narrative production between adults with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and cognitively healthy older adults (HOA). Second, to verify whether specific speech graph attributes are associated with episodic, working, and semantic memory. Methods: 24 AD patients (age=72.75±8.13; education=4.25±3.30) and 48 HOA (age=69.85±7.06; education=5.08±3.10) produced an oral narrative task based on a sequence of pictures and performed episodic, working, and semantic memory tasks. Narratives were transcribed and each word was represented as a node and the temporal sequence was represented as directed edges. Graph connectedness was assessed by counting the number of edges (E), the number of nodes in the largest connected component (LCC) and the number of nodes in the largest strongly connected component (LSC). Results: AD patients produced less connected narratives than the HOA, with fewer edges (p=0.0035) and smaller LSC (p=0.0116). Semantic memory correlated moderately with LCC (Rho=0.59, p=0.002) exclusively in AD. Episodic memory correlated with LSC in HOA (Rho=0.47, p= <0.001). Conclusion: Word-graphs connectedness represents a practical tool to assess cognitive impairment in AD patients.

My argument is that the history of space can be built by montage. I'm a documentary filmmaker and editor. I understand film as a support for writing in fragments. I think that the filmic form, capable of carrying movements and times, testimonies and texts, past and present, is a suitable support for the history of space. There is a visual form of knowledge and a wisdom of the gaze, as in Warburg's Atlas, largely disregarded by the academy as a way of producing knowledge. If montage is a polyphonic device that uses forgotten remains and heterogeneous narrations to dismantle the official story and reassemble another story from its critical constellations, no instrument seems to me more adequate than a film to execute it. Through the search for other ways of narrating the urban experience, following Benjamin from the rags and the residues, operating knowledge from the anarchic potentialities of the fragment and the problematization through doubt, through the incomplete and through the unfinished. For Didi-Huberman, the empirical and creative exercise proposed by Benjamin is capable of bringing out other possibilities from the dismantling of certainties. It allows us to think through the differences in the gaps left between the fragments. The montage allows for the simultaneity of times and the emergence of symptoms, the revelation of failures, conflicts, heterogeneity, in perforating tradition and colliding with the text. If montage serves all this, it also serves the decolonization of perspectives and methodologies, serves to narrate the history of subalterns and the hidden histories of empires. It also can be used to articulate memory, narration and history in the attempt to grasp reality. I propose the use of cinematographic montage as a method of knowledge production, as an important part of the research and whose result will be a constitutive and inseparable part of the thesis. Film as a method for the social sciences. In addition to assembling the fragments, the author's narrative interference is a critical point of the proposed experience. Delivering an account of the position from which one narrates is, therefore, fundamental. The narration does not impose itself as a voice of God over the material, as it neither affirms nor has certainties. It is organized on the incompleteness of the process. The narration sheds light on the background of the painting, on what History disregarded, on what was considered disposable or unimportant by the discourse of the dominator. It is thinking through differences and from the cracks of what was enunciated by the authority. It is thinking from accidents and ghosts.I propose the integration of the result of film montage experience in the general organization of the thesis, so that the chapters can vary between the two supports, text and film, being organized according to what the material itself indicates.

Abstract:
Purpose – Storytelling is a very actual trend in destinations´ promotion. Travel narratives are renowned for the ability to arouse interest in the reader. The stories can be told in a written form, visual form, or in a form of movements (dances, theatre, etc.). Travel narratives can include more detailed information, they evoke emotions and empathy. Empathy has then a positive relation to behavioral intentions. Therefore, storytelling as a concept is more and more adopted by destination marketing organisations (DMOs). The approach and use of the concept can be different. The aim of the paper is to identify the approaches, and structures used by DMOs and to reveal the level of readers´ or tourists´ involvement in the narratives. Methodology – The main purpose of research is reached by conducting an empirical study using the qualitative methods of analysis - content analysis, deconstruction of the stories, analyzing the story structure, and comparison of the identified structures with the theory. Quantitative analysis, descriptive statistics and contingency tables are used to analyse the frequency and combinations of storytelling structures and approaches of the DMOs. Findings – A narrative is the central theme of the communication in 65.12% of analyzed campaigns. The most used structures are Petal and Hero´s Journey. The tourists are the main characters in 55.81% of the analyzed campaigns. They are also involved in the story creation in 46.51%. The most used communication channel is YouTube; this is valid on all levels of destinations. Contribution – Storytelling is an important part of destinations´ marketing, however, the research usually brings insight from a narrow or specific point of view (e.g., analysis of one platform or in a form of a case study). This research brings a comprehensive view of the narrative structures used for destinations based on empirical research from several destinations and a deep analysis of the content.

Full text
Abstract:
The character of the Jew was absent from Iraqi cinematic works, while it was present in many Arab cinematic works produced in other Arab countries, and the manner of presenting these characters and the goals behind choosing that method differed. While this character was absent from the Iraqi cinematic narration, it was present in the Iraqi novelist narration, especially after the year 2003. Its presence in the Iraqi narration was diverse, due to the specificity of the Iraqi Jewish character and its attachment to the idea of being an Iraqi citizen, and the exclusion and forced displacement that Jews were subjected to in the modern history of Iraq. This absence in the cinematic texts is a continuation of this enforced absence. The Jewish character was never present in the Iraqi cinematic narration, as far as we know, except in one short fictional movie, which is the subject of this research. The research dealt with the movie “Venice of the East 2018” by screenwriter Mustafa Sattar Al-Rikabi and director Bahaa Al-Kazemi. We chose this movie for several reasons, some technical and some non-technical. One of the non-technical reasons is that feature cinematic texts rarely dealt with Jewish characters. The movie is the only Iraqi feature movie, according to our knowledge, produced after 2003, dealt with these characters, and assumed that one of them would return to Iraq. Therefore, our choice was while we were thinking of a research sample dealing with the personality of the Iraqi Jew and what is related to him and how it was expressed graphically. As for the technical reasons, it is due to the quality of the cinematic language level that the director employed to express what he wants in this movie, whose only hero is the character of the unnamed Jewish man played by the Iraqi actor (Sami Kaftan). As well as, many of the signs contained in the visual text that provide indications that may be conscious or unconscious of the situation of this segment of Iraqis, and this will become clear in the course of the research. 4 The research is divided into a number of subjects, including historical theory and applied cinema. The historical subjects included a set of points, namely (the Jews who they are and where they live) and (their presence in Iraq). The research then passed on the existence of (the Jewish character in the Iraqi narrative narrative), and how the Iraqi novelist dealt with the Jew in his novels after 2003, and does the Iraqi narration distinguish between the Jew and the Israeli or the Zionist. The applied part of the research followed, and included a (critical view of the movie) and then passed on the cinematic narration of events in the last subject (the narration of the cinematography). We studied the cinematic narration from three perspectives (cinematic shots, camera movement, camera angle and point of view), the research concluded with a set of results from criticism and analysis. It is worth mentioning that this research is an integral part of a previous unpublished study entitled (Ethnographic movie as artistic memory), which is an ethnographic study of the personality of the Jew in the Iraqi short movie.

Full text
Abstract:
The article examines modern media texts in the field of political journalism; the role of information narratives and emotional markers in media doctrine is clarified; verbal expression of rational meanings in the articles of famous Ukrainian analysts is shown. Popular theories of emotions in the process of cognition are considered, their relationship with the author’s personality, reader psychology and gonzo journalism is shown. Since the media text, in contrast to the text, is a product of social communication, the main narrative is information with the intention of influencing public opinion. Media text implies the presence of the author as a creator of meanings. In addition, media texts have universal features: word, sound, visuality (stills, photos, videos). They are traditionally divided into radio, TV, newspaper and Internet texts. The concepts of multimedia and hypertext are related to online texts. Web combinations, especially in political journalism, have intensified the interactive branching of nonlinear texts that cannot be published in traditional media. The Internet as a medium has created the conditions for the exchange of ideas in the most emotional way. Hence Gonzo’s interest in journalism, which expresses impressions of certain events in words and epithets, regardless of their stylistic affiliation. There are many such examples on social media in connection with the events surrounding the Wagnerians, the Poroshenko case, Russia’s new aggression against Ukraine, and others. Thus, the study of new features of media text in the context of modern political narratives and emotional markers is important in media research. The article focuses review of etymology, origin and features of using lexemes “cмисл (meaning)” and “сенс (sense)” in linguistic practice of Ukrainians results in the development of meanings and functional stylistic coloring in the usage of these units. Lexemes “cмисл (meaning)” and “сенс (sense)” are used as synonyms, but there are specific fields of meanings where they cannot be interchanged: lexeme “сенс (sense)” should be used when it comes to reasonable grounds for something, lexeme “cмисл (meaning)” should be used when it comes to notion, concept, understanding. Modern political texts are most prominent in genres such as interviews with politicians, political commentaries, analytical articles by media experts and journalists, political reviews, political portraits, political talk shows, and conversations about recent events, accompanied by effective emotional narratives. Etymologically, the concept of “narrative” is associated with the Latin adjective “gnarus” – expert. Speakers, philosophers, and literary critics considered narrative an “example of the human mind.” In modern media texts it is not only “story”, “explanation”, “message techniques”, “chronological reproduction of events”, but first of all the semantic load and what subjective meanings the author voices; it is a process of logical presentation of arguments (narration). The highly professional narrator uses narration as a “method of organizing discourse” around facts and impressions, impresses with his political erudition, extraordinary intelligence and creativity. Some of the above theses are reflected in the following illustrations from the Ukrainian media: “Culture outside politics” – a pro-Russian narrative…” (MP Gabibullayeva); “The next will be Russia – in the post-Soviet space is the Arab Spring…” (journalist Vitaly Portnikov); “In Russia, only the collapse of Ukraine will be perceived as success” (Pavel Klimkin); “Our army is fighting, hiding from the leadership” (Yuri Butusov).

Full text
Abstract:
Native and restored plant communities are part of the foundation of park ecosystems and provide a natural context to cultural and historical events in parks throughout the Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network (HTLN). Vegetation communities across the HTLN are primarily of three types: prairie, woodland, and forest. Park resource managers need an effective plant community monitoring protocol to guide the development and adaptation of management strategies for maintaining and/or restoring composition and structure of prairies, woodland, and forest communities. Our monitoring design attempts to balance the needs of managers for current information and the need for insight into the changes occurring in vegetation communities over time. This monitoring protocol consists of a protocol narrative (this document) and 18 standard operating procedures (SOPs) for monitoring plant communities in HTLN parks. The scientific objectives of HTLN plant community monitoring are to (1) describe the species composition, structure, and diversity of prairie, woodland, and forested communities; (2) determine temporal changes in the species composition, structure and diversity of prairie, woodland, and forested communities; and (3) determine the relationship between temporal and spatial changes and environmental variables, including specific management practices where possible. This protocol narrative describes the sampling design for plant communities, including the response design (data collection methods), spatial design (distribution of sampling sites within a park), and revisit design (timing and frequency of monitoring visits). Details can be found in the SOPs, which are listed in the Revision History section and available at the Integrated Resource Management Applications (IRMA) website (irma.nps.gov). Other aspects of the protocol summarized in the narrative include procedures for data management and reporting, personnel and operating requirements, and instructions for how to revise the protocol.

Kull, Kathleen, Craig Young, Jennifer Haack-Gaynor, Lloyd Morrison, and Michael DeBacker. Problematic plant monitoring protocol for the Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network: Narrative, version 2.0. National Park Service, May 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/nrr-2293355.

Full text
Abstract:
Problematic species, which include invasive, exotic, and harmful species, fragment native ecosystems, displace native plants and animals, and alter ecosystem function. In National Parks, such species negatively affect park resources and visitor enjoyment by altering landscapes and fire regimes, reducing native plant and animal habitat, and increasing trail maintenance needs. Recognizing these challenges, Heartland Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) Network parks identified problematic plants as the highest-ranking vital sign across the network. Given the need to provide early detection of potential problematic plants (ProPs) and the size of network parks, the Heartland I&M Network opted to allocate available sampling effort to maximize the area searched. With this approach and the available sampling effort in mind, we developed realistic objectives for the ProP monitoring protocol. The monitoring objectives are: 1. Create a watch list of ProPs known to occur in network parks and a watch list of potential ProPs that may invade network parks in the future, and occasionally update these two lists as new information is made available. 2. Provide early detection monitoring for all ProPs on the watch lists. 3. Search at least 0.75% and up to 40% of the reference frame for ProP occurrences in each park. 4. Estimate/calculate and report the abundance and frequency of ProPs in each park. 5. To the extent possible, identify temporal changes in the distribution and abundance of ProPs known to occur in network parks. ProP watch lists are developed using the best available and most relevant state, regional, and national exotic plant lists. The lists are generated using the PriorityDB database. We designed the park reference frames (i.e., the area to be monitored) to focus on accessible natural and restored areas. The field methods vary for small parks and large parks, defined as parks with reference frames less than and greater than 350 acres (142 ha), respectively. For small parks, surveyors make three equidistant passes through polygon search units that are approximately 2-acres (0.8 ha) in size. For large parks, surveyors record each ProP encountered along 200-m or 400-m line search units. The cover of each ProP taxa encountered in search units is estimated using the following cover scale: 0 = 0, 1 = 0.1-0.9 m2, 2 = 1-9.9 m2, 3 = 10-49.9 m2, 4 = 50-99.9 m2, 5 = 100-499.9 m2, 6 = 499.9-999.9 m2, and 7 = 1,000-4,999.9 m2. The field data are managed in the FieldDB database. Monitoring is scheduled to revisit most parks every four years. The network will report the results to park managers and superintendents after completing ProP monitoring.

Abstract:
The article deals with the peculiarities of the use of verbal, visual and practical methods in the distance learning of professional practically-oriented discipline «Radioproduction», are offered new techniques for the use of these methods during the presentation of theoretical material and the creation of a media product (audiovisual content), due to the acquisition of a specialty in conditions online. It is proved that in distance learning, this discipline is inadmissible to absolutize the significance of verbal methods (narrative, explanation, conversation, discussion, lecture) and that all varieties of verbal methods require the intensification of an interactive factor. Based on its own experience, it has been demonstrated, as with the help of various educational platforms, the most appropriate use of visual learning methods. Particular attention is paid to the fact that practical teaching methods based on professional activities of students acquire priority in their professional training. It has been established that only when parity application of new receptions of verbal, visual and practical methods of online learning may have a proper pedagogical effect and will ensure the qualitative acquisition of the specialty. Training methods – verbal, visual, practical – are intended to provide all levels of assimilation of knowledge and skills to promote the full master of the radiojournalist specialist.

Abstract:
Research methodology. The following methods were used in this research: general scientific methods (descriptive, analysis, synthesis, comparison) and special (structural, hermeneutic, narrative, method of content analysis). We identified words related to the concept of the enemy and determined the context in which they are used by the authors of the collections Results. The formats of reflection of military reality in collections of military documentaries are investigated. It is emphasized that the authors-observers of events as professional communicators form a vision of events based on categories understandable to the audience – «own» and «others». Instead, the authors-participants go events have more creative space and pay more attention to their own emotional state and reflections. It is defined how the enemy is depicted and what place he occupies in the military reality represented by the authors. It is emphasized that the authors reflect the enemy in different ways. In particular, the authors-observers of the events tried to form a comprehensive vision of the events, and therefore paid much attention to the opposite side of the military conflict. Authors-participants of the events tend to show the enemy as a mass to be opposed. In such collections, the enemy is specified only in the presence of evidence confirming the presence of Russians or militants. Novelty. The research for the first time investigates the methods of representation of military activity in the collections of Ukrainian military documentaries. The article is devoted to the analysis of how the authors represent the enemy. Practical importance. The analysis of collections of military documentaries will allow to study the phenomenon of war and to trace the peculiarities of the authors’ representation of military reality.

Oppel, Annalena. Beyond Informal Social Protection – Personal Networks of Economic Support in Namibia. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), November 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ids.2020.002.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper poses a different lens on informal social protection (ISP). ISP is generally understood as practices of livelihood support among individuals. While studies have explored the social dynamics of such, they rarely do so beyond the conceptual space of informalities and poverty. For instance, they discuss aspects of inclusion, incentives and disincentives, efficiency and adequacy. This provides important insights on whether and to what extent these practices provide livelihood support and for whom. However, doing so in part disregards the socio-political context within which support practices take place. This paper therefore introduces the lens of between-group inequality through the Black Tax narrative. It draws on unique mixed method data of 205 personal support networks of Namibian adults. The results show how understanding these practices beyond the lens of informal social protection can provide important insights on how economic inequality resonates in support relationships, which in turn can play a part in reproducing the inequalities to which they respond.

COVID-19 prevalence and infection control measures at homeless shelters and hostels in high-income countries: protocol for a scoping review. York University Libraries, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.25071/10315/38513.

Full text
Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted people experiencing homelessness. Homeless shelters and hostels, as congregate living spaces for residents with many health vulnerabilities, are highly susceptible to outbreaks of COVID-19. A synthesis of the research-to-date can inform evidence-based practices for infection, prevention, and control strategies at these sites to reduce the prevalence of COVID-19 among both shelter/hostel residents and staff. Methods: A scoping review in accordance with Arksey and O’Malley’s framework will be conducted to identify literature reporting COVID-19 positivity rates among homeless shelter and hostel residents and staff, as well as infection control strategies to prevent outbreaks in these facilities. The focus will be on literature produced in high-income countries. Nine academic literature databases and 11 grey literature databases will be searched for literature from March 2020 to July 2021. Literature screening will be completed by two reviewers and facilitated by Covidence, a systematic review management platform. A third reviewer will be engaged to resolve disagreements and facilitate consensus. A narrative summary of the major themes identified in the literature, numerical counts of relevant data including the COVID-19 positivity rates, and recommendations for different infection control approaches will be produced. Discussion: The synthesis of the research generated on COVID-19 prevalence and prevention in homeless shelters and hostels will assist in establishing best practices to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other airborne diseases at these facilities in high-income countries while identifying next steps to expand the existing evidence base.

Prevention and education evidence review: Gambling-related harm. Edited by Margo Hilbrecht. Greo, September 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.33684/2021.006.

Full text
Abstract:
This report supports an evidence-based approach to the prevention and education objective of the National Strategy to Reduce Harm from Gambling. Applying a public health policy lens, it considers three levels of measures: universal (for the benefit of the whole population), selective (for the benefit of at-risk groups), and indicated (for the benefit of at-risk individuals). Six measures are reviewed by drawing upon a range of evidence in the academic and grey literature. The universal level measures are “Regulatory restriction on how gambling is provided” and “Population-based safer gambling/responsible gambling efforts.” Selective measures focus on age cohorts in a chapter entitled, “Targeted safer gambling campaigns for children, youth, and older adults.” The indicated measures are “Brief internet delivered interventions for gambling,” “Systems and tools that produced actual (‘hard’) barriers and limit access to funds,” and “Self-exclusion.” Since the quantity and quality of the evidence base varied by measure, appropriate review methods were selected to assess publications using a systematic, scoping, or narrative approach. Some measures offered consistent findings regarding the effectiveness of interventions and initiatives, while others were less clear. Unintended consequences were noted since it is important to be aware of unanticipated, negative consequences resulting from prevention and education activities. After reviewing the evidence, authors identified knowledge gaps that require further research, and provided guidance for how the findings could be used to enhance the prevention and education objective. The research evidence is supplemented by consultations with third sector charity representatives who design and implement gambling harm prevention and education programmes. Their insights and experiences enhance, support, or challenge the academic evidence base, and are shared in a separate chapter. Overall, research evidence is limited for many of the measures. Quality assessments suggest that improvements are needed to support policy decisions more fully. Still, opportunities exist to advance evidence-based policy for an effective gambling harm prevention and education plan.

Abstract:
Blue Mountain is a 35-minute work for two actors and orchestra. It was commissioned by the Ultima Festival, and premiered in 2014 by the Danish National Chamber Orchestra. The Ultima festival challenged me – being both a composer and writer – to make something where I wrote both text and music. Interestingly, I hadn’t really thought of that before, writing text to my own music – or music to my own text. This is a very common thing in popular music, the songwriter. But in the lied, the orchestral piece or indeed in opera, there is a strict division of labour between composer and writer. There are exceptions, most famously Wagner, who did libretto, music and staging for his operas. And 20th century composers like Olivier Messiaen, who wrote his own poems for his music – or Luciano Berio, who made a collage of such detail that it the text arguably became his own in Sinfonia. But this relationship is often a convoluted one, not often discussed in the tradition of musical analysis where text tend to be taken as a given, not subjected to the same rigorous scrutiny that is often the case with music. This exposition is an attempt to unfold this process of composing with both words and music. A key challenge has been to make the text an intrinsic part of the performance situation, and the music something more than mere accompaniment to narration. To render the words meaningless without the music and vice versa. So the question that emerged was how music and words can be not only equal partners, but also yield a new species of music/text? A second questions follows en suite, and that is what challenges the conflation of different roles – the writer and the composer – presents? I will try to address these questions through a discussion of the methods applied in Blue Mountain, the results they have yielded, and the challenges this work has posed.
