Abstract:
Winged artifacts aim at the imitation of nature’s ingenious method to produce thrust with slim and smart-shaped flapping surfaces—the bending-torsional drive. The kinematics of these surfaces shows, in three dimensions, a bending motion coupled with a simultaneous torsion. This chapter describes the design and development of the artificial bird SmartBird, which was introduced in 2011 on the occasion of the annual international industry fair Hannovermesse. This artwork with articulated wings received worldwide attention through its unprecedented agility. The efficient motion of bodies heavier than air rests on the optimization of target functions like total weight to be balanced by lift, flow resistance to be balanced by thrust, structural layout and reliability, energy storage and, last but not least, smart flight control. From the author’s point of view, the bending-torsional drive just has started its career as a new player in this optimization game.

Abstract:
Rapid changes in technology are altering some of the basic ways in which we interact with our world, as seen in the evolution of the telephone to mobile phone to smart phone. These technological changes are ushering in new methods of data collection and analysis, which also open up new types of research questions and designs for couple researchers. This chapter reviews current and emerging methods for data acquisition and analysis in relationship science. Data acquisition methods include mobile technology and context-specific ecological momentary assessment, as well as behavioral signal-processing techniques to quantify such data. Analytic methods cover mixed models and actor–partner interdependence models, as well as a broad introduction to machine learning techniques that are appropriate for massive datasets.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the application of treatment methods in prevention, with an emphasis on family-based substance abuse, delinquency, and child maltreatment. The goal of prevention is to increase resilience in high-risk children. Considerable overlap exists between evidence-based prevention and treatment interventions, including their etiological and intervention theories, cognitive behavioral change methods and outcome objectives. Also included is the Institute of Medicinespectrum of treatment disorders, a review of prevention and treatment intervention theories, and methods used to design effective family interventions, with an emphasis on family systems, social ecology and resilience theories including the author’s Transactional Framework of Resilience model and the Strengthening Families Program. Lastly, this chapter covers the applications of clinical techniques to improve resilience characteristics and processes and places evidence-based prevention programs methods within this framework and details their similarity to treatment. Digital technology (e.g., DVDs, Web, smart phones, television, etc.) is recommended to reduce intervention costs and “go-to-scale” to have a greater public health impact in promoting resilience in children.
