Full textFDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) uses a version of the Navier-Stokes equations to make accurate calculations of heat and gas flow through enclosures exposed to fire. The developers of FDS have, and continue to, validate it as new features get added in an attempt to increase its accuracy and broaden its potential applications. However, little of this effort is focused on FDS’ conductive heat transfer model, based on the one-dimensional Crank-Nicolson method. Thus, this study aims to test the accuracy of FDS’ conduction model by comparing it to calculations using FEM (Finite Element Method). FDS simulations were created so as to facilitate the study of a wall and its boundary conditions with as little interference from other factors as possible. This to create a controlled environment which easily could be replicated in the subsequent FE-calculations of the conductive heat flow through the solid obstructions. Three different walls (10 cm concrete, 20 cm concrete and 1 mm steel), each with the three different boundary conditions for the rear surface (Exposed, Void and Insulated), were exposed to three different temperatures (100 °C, 500 °C and 1000 °C) for a total of 27 FDS simulations. The adiabatic surface temperature was measured in each simulation in FDS and used as input for the corresponding FE-calculations. The results showed no clear inconsistencies in the boundary conditions, given enough time for thermal penetration they affected the resulting temperatures as expected. Save a slight deviation in the steel walls exposed to 100 °C and 500 °C with boundary conditions Exposed and Void where FDS slightly underestimated the temperature relative to the FE-calculations. The gas temperatures in the grid cells closest to the wall were found to be unreliable as they tended to undergo substantial fluctuations, likely as a result of how FDS handles the discretization of non-solid space for the Navier-Stokes calculations. These fluctuations were however not found to affect the solid temperatures as the mean gas temperature was accurate. FDS was also found to have a tendency to slightly overestimate the surface temperature in the first few minutes of the simulations relative to the FE-calculations. Though the resulting temperatures from the two methods converged after a few minutes at most in all tests. These deviations were considered to have too minor an impact on the solid temperature to justify claims of inaccuracy in FDS. Thus, the general conclusion of this study is that FDS’ predictions of solid phase temperatures are sufficiently accurate within these delimitations.

Full textThe analysis of stresses and strains within textile-reinforced rubber components like air springs, tyres, driving belts, and tubes requires accurate as well as efficient computational models. On the one hand, the large deformations, the composite's strongly anisotropic properties, and the large ratio between the size of the cords and the composite necessitate a precise modeling. On the other hand, the highly loaded parts of the components are spatially confined and thus a reduction of the computational effort is desirable. These reduced models are efficient enough for performing engineering-oriented optimizations. The two main priorities of this work are the continuum mechanical modeling of hybrid cords and the development of representative volume elements of highly loaded hybrid cord-rubber composites. Based on an anisotropic plasticity model, which takes the frictional sliding between the filaments within multifilament yarns into account, a finite element model for the simulation of the twisting process of a hybrid cord is the fundament of this work. A comparison with experimental results from tensile and torsional tests as well as images of cross sections validate the proposed hybrid cord model. The basis of the representative volume element is the extension of the classical periodic boundary conditions, which now enable to take the curvature and pressure load into account. Thus, the model is suitable to analyze the highly loaded parts of hybrid cord-rubber composites like the rolling lobe of an air spring. Finally, the set-ups of hybrid cords and hybrid cord-rubber composites are analyzed by means of parameter studies to obtain a minimized loading of the rubber, yarns, and their interface

Full textThe objective of this work is to develop an optimization procedure for FDM prototypes. This procedure is based on the structural analysis of the prototypes within different slice filling paths. In order to reach this objective, experimental tests with different filling trajectories are conducted and the results are used in structural analysis by finite element method. The orthotropic behavior of the prototype material and the use of the Classical Laminate Theory in the numerical simulation were validated. The results were applied in different case studies, showing the viability of its application in the design of functional prototypes.

The aim of this work was to study the influence of process conditions for 3D printing on the final properties of prototypes of high density polyethylene (HDPE) using the method of the fused deposition modeling. Prototypes for type-V tensile testing according to ASTM D 638 were printed; They were made to three processing temperatures: 220, 240 and 260 Celsius degree. Control parameters for printing were kept constant in all the samples. The printed samples were characterized by X – ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, tensile test, melt flow index test, and, shrinkage test. The results of the characterization of the printed samples and of the original material were compared. These results demonstrated that the printing conditions employed in this study caused a slight change in the structural characteristics of the printed samples compared to the unprocessed original material, there being a slight increase in crystallinity (about 1,3 to 3 percent) for HDPE which was printed. In addition, it has been proven that the degree of crystallinity was slightly greater on the inside that on the surface of the printed samples, because of uneven cooling on the surface and inside of these samples. The slight change in the degree of crystallinity was not enough to cause change in the elastic modulus and yield strength compared to the original HDPE. Other results showed that there was not significant change involving bond formation, break chains, and, thermal degradation by the effect of the processing conditions used during printing.

Full textThis work consists in a detailed study of the advantages and disadvantages of the use of the Filter Diagonalization Method, FDM, for data analysis in Steady State Free Precession, SSFP, technique, usually employed to implement fast acquisition of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, NMR, spectra. In the case of low resolution NMR using fast acquisition procedures, SSFP is a powerful tool to improve signal-to-noise ratio, presenting several important practical applications. Despite its success in the low resolution regime, SSFP is not a routine technique for high resolution applications, so far, mainly because of (1) truncation artifacts and (2) the intrinsic anomalies caused by admixture of free-induction-decay and echo signals. The literature reports many possible techniques to solve such kind of problems, but, none of them is capable to really eliminate the generated spectra anomalies caused by the fast acquisition procedure used in SSFP. FDM is a parametric method for non-liner fitting performed in the time domain. Its main goal is to solve the Harmonic Inversion Problem, HIP, making it robust and suitable for spectral analysis of time signals in the cases where the Fourier Transform, FT, technique fail. In this work we demonstrate that FDM can be used to implement the analysis of the SSFP data, with more efficiency than that achieve by appropriated FT procedures. Room temperature 13C NMR spectra of brucine samples, obtained from pulse sequences with 100 ms repetition time, can be reproduced with good signal-to-noise ratio and high resolution by means of the FDM. The limitation of the FDM analysis is more relevant in the case of spectra with a high density of peaks in a limited spectral frequency region. In these cases, the reduced short observation time window imposes serious limitation to the resolution achieved by the FDM.

Full textWaveguides are used to transmit electromagnetic signals.Their geometry is typically long and slender their particularshape can be used in the design of computational methods. Onlyspecial modes are transmitted and eigenvalue and eigenvectoranalysis becomes important.
We develop a .nite-element code for solving theelectromagnetic .eld problem in closed waveguides .lled withvarious materials. By discretizing the cross-section of thewaveguide into a number of triangles, an eigenvalue problem isderived. A general program based on Arnoldis method andARPACK has been written using node and edge elements toapproximate the .eld. A serious problem in the FEM was theoccurrence of spurious solution, that was due to impropermodeling of the null space of the curl operator. Therefore edgeelements has been chosen to remove non physical spurioussolutions that arises.
Numerical examples are given for homogeneous andinhomogeneous waveguides, in the homogeneous case the resultsare compared to analytical solutions and the right order ofconvergence is achieved. For the more complicated inhomogeneouswaveguides with and without striplines, comparison has beendone with results found in literature together with gridconvergence studies.
The code has been implemented to be used in an industrialenvironment, together with full 3-D time and frequency domainsolvers. The2-D simulations has been used as input for full3-D time domain simulations, and the results have been comparedto what an analytical input would give.
