Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to develop a prediction model to assess the authenticity of Aceh rice based on the NIRS spectrum produced. The detection of the authenticity of Aceh rice quickly and efficiently can be realized through technological development Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS). This study uses Sigupai rice varieties (Aceh Barat Daya), Sanbay (Simeulue) and Ciherang. The number of samples used in this study was 45 samples. Measurement of rice spectrum using Self developed FT-IR IPTEK T-1516. Rice spectrum data classification uses the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) with two pretreatments, namely De-trending and Multiplicative Scatter Correction. The results of this study were obtained: NIRS spectrum of rice showed the presence of fat content at a wavelength of 2355 nm - 2462 nm. Carbohydrate content at wavelength 2256 nm - 2321 nm. Protein content at wavelength 2056 nm - 2166 nm. The content of water content at a wavelength of 1910 nm-1980 nm and wave length of 1411 nm - 1492 nm shows the protein content and water content. NIRS with the PCA method was able to distinguish the mixing of Sigupai rice from Ciherang rice where the best differentiation occurred in the form of two types of grouping namely Sigupai rice ≥ 75 and Sigupai rice ≤ 50 and de-trending pretreatment was the best pretreatment in classifying Aceh rice (Sigupai and Sanbay) with National rice (Ciherang).

Abstract:

Abstract:
Comparison of the performance of the ACER and POT methods for prediction of extreme values from heavy tailed distributions. To be able to apply the ACER method to heavy tailed data the ACER method was first modified to assume that the underlying extreme value distribution would be a Fréchet distribution, not a Gumbel distribution as assumed earlier. These two methods have then been tested with a wide range of synthetic and real world data sets to compare their preformance in estimation of these extreme values. I have found the ACER method seem to consistently perform better in the terms of accuracy compared to the asymptotic POT method.

In this thesis we have explored the very high prices that sometimes occurs in the Nord Pool electricity market Elspot. By applying AR-GARCH time series models, extreme value theory, and ACER estimation techniques, we have sought to estimate the probabilities of threshold exceedances related to electricity prices. Of particular concern was the heavy-tailed Fréchet distribution, which was the asymptotic distribution assumed in the ACER estimation. We have found that with extreme value theory we are better equipped to deal with the very high quantiles in the time series we have analyzed. We have also described a method that can give an assessment of the probability of exceeding a selected level in the electricity price.

Van, der Neut Nuan. "PAPR reduction in FBMC systems using an FBMC optimized ACE method." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/56119.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation was to investigate peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction techniques for filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) modulated systems. Research into current PAPR reduction techniques in FBMC and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) found that the active constellation extension (ACE) method has not been exploited for use in FBMC systems. This is, in part, due to the complexities involved in signal processing inherent of FBMC systems, as well as FBMC being a relatively new subject matter in the telecommunications field. The outcomes of the dissertation were four novel PAPR reduction techniques for FBMC systems. These techniques can be split up into two namely linear programming optimization ACE-based techniques and overlapping ACE techniques. The techniques compensate for the overlapping symbols in FBMC by utilizing a frame based approach. This characteristic makes them ideal candidates to be applied in burst transmission. Furthermore, because an ACE based technique is used, they do not require the transmission of side information. The PAPR performance of the techniques are shown to match, or in some cases improve, current PAPR techniques for FBMC. The analysis of the proposed approaches also address some complexity issues with current FBMC implementations. The out-of-band (OOB) interference of the techniques under clipping scenarios is investigated. It is shown that the OOB interference can be minimized whilst still maintaining good PAPR performance. Additional results are also provided by means of a study of the PAPR reduction techniques proposed as applied to a high power amplifier based model. The corresponding power amplifier efficiency as well as bit-error rate (BER) degradation are investigated and compared to other standard techniques for PAPR reduction in FBMC systems. It was found that the proposed techniques can achieve a higher amplifier efficiency than existing techniques at a marginal trade-off in BER degradation. This BER degradation is lower than existing techniques due to the marginal increase in average transmit power. As illustrated by exhaustive simulations, the single scaling and overlapping smart gradient-project ACE-based techniques proposed, are ideal candidates for practical implementation in systems employing the low complexity polyphase implementation of FBMC modulators. The methods are shown to offer significant PAPR reduction and increase the feasibility of FBMC as a replacement modulation system for OFDM.

Abstract:
Abstract Surface water and sediment samples collected from Jukskei River in South Africa, were subjected to different extraction techniques, liquid–liquid (LLE), solidphase extraction (SPE), activated carbon extraction (ACE) and soxhlet extraction (SE) for sediment. The samples were extracted with dichloromethane, cleaned in a silica gel column and the extracts quantified using a Varian 3800 GC-ECD. The percentage recovery test for 2,40DDT, DDE and DDD and 4,40DDT, DDE and DDD in water ranged from 80%–96% and 76%–95% (LLE); 56%–76% and 56%–70% (SPE) and 75%–84% (ACE), respectively; while that recoveries for sediment samples varied from 65%– 95% for 2,40DDT, DDE and DDD and 80%–91% for 4,40DDT, DDE and DDD. The high recoveries exhibited by ACE compared very well with LLE and SE. This was not the case with SPE which exhibited the lowest value of recoveries for both 2,4 and 4,40DDD, DDE and DDT standard samples. The mean concentrations of DDT and metabolites ranged from nd-1.10 lg/L, nd-0.80 lg/L, nd- 1.21 lg/L and 1.92 lg/L for LLE, SPE, ACE and SE, respectively. The total DDT (2,40 and 4,40-DDT) in water and sediment samples ranged from 1.20–3.25 lg/L and 1.82–5.24 lg/L, respectively. The low concentrations of the DDT metabolites obtained in the present study may suggest a recent contamination of the river by DDT.

The locations used are Oslo, Heimsjø, Honningsvåg, Narvik, Harstad, Tregde, Andenes and Viker, and four different methods have been used for the estimation. We use two established and widely used methods, the Annual Maxima Method (AMM) and the Peaks-over-Threshold (POT) method. The AMM uses the observed annual maxima from each location, while the POT method uses the exceedances of some high threshold in relation to the data. In addition, we also use two approaches that are less known and less used, the Revised Joint Probability Method (RJPM) and the Average Conditional Exceedance Rate (ACER) method. In the former, a distribution for extreme surges is found and used together with information from numerical tide predictions. We also take into account the interaction between tides and surges where applicable. The ACER method uses only the series of measured sea levels, but tries to account for dependence by a cascade of conditioning probabilities. We find that for return periods up to 20 years the return levels are usually very similar for all methods except RJPM, which seems to underestimate these values. The data intensive methods of POT, RJPM and ACER seem to agree for the 200 year levels, while particularly the Gumbel method seems to overshoot the levels in comparison to the other methods.

Abstract:
The present work is aimed at investigating the mechanisms of nanowire growth from aqueous solutions through a physical and chemical modeling. Based on this modeling, deriving an optimized process control is intended. The work considers two methods of nanowire growth. The first is the dielectrophoretic nanowire assembly from neutral molecules or metal clusters. Secondly, in the directed electrochemical nanowire assembly metal-containing ions are reduced in an AC electric field in the vicinity of the nanowire tip and afterwards deposited at the nanowire surface. To describe the transport and growth processes, continuum models are employed. Furthermore, it has been necessary to consider electro-kinetic fluid flows to match the experimental observations. The occurring partial differential equations are solved numerically by means of finite element method (FEM). The effect of the process parameters on the nanowire growth are analyzed by comparing experimental results to a parameter study. The evaluation has yielded that an AC electro-osmotic fluid flow has a major influence on the dielectrophoretic nanowire assembly regarding the growth velocity and morphology. In the case of directed electrochemical nanowire assembly, the nanowire morphology can be controlled by the applied AC signal shape. Based on the nanowire growth model, an optimized AC signal has been designed, whose parametrization allows to adjust to the chemical precursor and the desired nanowire diameter

Abstract:
This chapter comprises 16 case histories that illustrate methods of assessment described in the rest of this book and the use of the Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination (ACE)-III. Each case begins with a brief history from the patient and observations by the family followed by findings on cognitive examination focusing on the profile shown on the ACE-III, the results of imaging investigations, and a discussion of the diagnosis and its differential, with a final summary of the principal conclusions, indicating whether the services of a neuropsychologist are required or not. The cases present important common conditions (such as mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease in the mild and moderate stages, behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia, progressive non-fluent aphasia, semantic dementia, corticobasal degeneration, progressive supranuclear palsy, and Huntington’s disease) as well as interesting neuropsychological syndromes (such as prosopagnosia, amnestic stoke, and transient epileptic amnesia).

Abstract:
Abstract AC electrokinetics is one of the widely used methods as an actuating mechanism in the lab-on-a-chip devices because of the absence of moving mechanical parts. In this paper, an analysis is done by using two perpendicular electrodes which are placed in V-shape to each other while maintaining an angle of 45 degrees with the third horizontal electrode. A semiconductive fluid was used to observe the microfluidic behavior and characteristics under the application of a DC biased AC signal. Applying the AC signal produced two different mechanisms of electrokinetics such as DC-biased AC electrothermal (ACET) and DC-biased AC electroosmosis (ACEO). In the ACEO process, a time-varying voltage was applied to the electrodes to create the double layer capacitance and zeta potential. This ACEO mechanism required lower voltage. On the other hand, the AC Electrothermal (ACET) flow produced a non-uniform electric field that generated spatially varying heat sources which in turn created a non-uniform temperature distribution. Two surface characteristics were also analyzed experimentally; one of these was by using the hydrophobic surface and the other used glass-surface only. At the microscale, mechanical microdevice encounter very high flow resistance and put stringent requirements on the strength of fluid channels, chambers and the interconnects. While many types of microfluidic manipulations can be effectively done by AC electrokinetics techniques, current research work focused on the observation of varying frequencies and voltages and their effects on microfluidic manipulations.

Abstract:
The recent discovery of angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) as a functional peptidase within the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) has added a new layer of complexity to the enzymatic cascade of this hormonal system. ACE2 is highly expressed in the proximal tubules of the kidney, an important tissue site involved in blood pressure regulation. Therefore, we derived a model for the processing of Ang I which is the immediate precursor to the biologically active peptides Ang II and Ang-(1-7) based on metabolism data in isolated proximal tubules of the sheep kidney (1). Given the individual experimental velocities for several peptidases expressed in the proximal tubules including ACE, ACE2 and neprilysin, rate constants were calculated to describe the conservation equations for the processing of Ang I, Ang II and Ang-(1-7) We modeled the system with Ang I as the initial substrate and peptide concentrations for the downstream products were calculated using Euler’s method.

Abstract:
In the reliability engineering and design of offshore structures probabilistic approaches are frequently adopted. They require the estimation of extreme quantiles of oceanographic data based on the statistical information. Due to strong correlation between such random variables as e.g. wave heights and wind speeds, application of the multivariate, or bivariate in the simplest case, extreme value theory is sometimes necessary. The paper focuses on the extension of the ACER method for prediction of extreme value statistics to the case of bivariate time series. Using the ACER method it is possible to provide an estimate of the exact extreme value distribution of a univariate time series. This is obtained by introducing a cascade of conditioning approximations to the exact extreme value distribution. When this cascade has converged, an estimate of the exact distribution has been obtained. In this paper it will be shown how the univariate ACER method can be extended in a natural way to also cover the case of bivariate data. Application of the bivariate ACER method will also be demonstrated at the measured coupled wind speed and wave height data.

Abstract:
A detail procedure to study mooring line strength reliability is presented. A fully coupled analysis is carried out to get the mooring tensions of a deep water semi-submersible floating systems operated in 100 year wave condition in South China Sea. The ACER method is applied to predict the 3h extreme mooring tension, and the results are validated by global maximum method. The hydrodynamic sampling points are generated by Latin Hypercube Sampling technique. The 3h extreme mooring tension is calculated by the ACER method with 10 minutes fully coupled dynamic simulation for each sampling point. The Kriging meta model method is trained to predict 3h mooring extreme tension under the effects of random hydrodynamic drag coefficients. A reliability analysis is carried out by implementing Monte Carlo simulation with the random hydrodynamic drag coefficients and mooring breaking strength considered.

Abstract:
One of the requirements for validating nuclear reactor plant models is to benchmark the predicted results of selected transients against measured plant data or another qualified code. A major challenge with benchmarking is the criteria for validating a model are not always well defined and rely heavily on human judgment, thus introducing the possibility of human bias or inconsistent conclusions. The validation process can also be time consuming. A new method is presented to aid in the validation of nuclear reactor plant models, using the Automated Code Assessment Program (ACAP), which is a tool developed at Pennsylvania State University under contract by the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The proposed method was developed specifically for real-time best-estimate nuclear operator training simulator transients. However, the tool can be easily customized for most applications (e.g., design models, steady state data). Four distinct statistical metrics and weightings were chosen, as deemed appropriate for transient nuclear operator training simulator applications. The metrics account for errors in magnitude and trend, and incorporate an experimental uncertainty. The four metrics are then combined into a single Figure of Merit (i.e., a statistical level of agreement between the predicted and benchmarking data sets). The use of ACAP for benchmarking is demonstrated by comparing experimental data from the Loss-of-Fluid-Test (LOFT) facility Large Break Loss-of-Coolant Experiment L2-5 with code predictions from a RELAP5-3D (Version 2.9.3+) model previously developed and published by Idaho National Laboratories. The proposed method is shown to have several advantages over conventional validation methods, in that it greatly reduces the possibility of human bias, generates reproducible results, can be easily automated to improve efficiency, and can be easily documented. After the initial validation, the tool can also be used to re-validate models after computer hardware changes, model changes, tool upgrades, and operating system upgrades.

Abstract:
This report describes publicly available data sets and quantitative analysis that local communities can use to evaluate environmental justice concerns associated with pipeline projects. We applied these data and analytical methods to two counties in North Carolina (Northampton and Robeson counties) that would be affected by the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP). We compared demographic and vulnerability characteristics of census blocks, census block groups, and census tracts that lie within 1 mile of the proposed pipeline route with corresponding census geographies that lie outside of the 1-mile zone. Finally, we present results of a county-level analysis of race and ethnicity data for the entire North Carolina segment of the proposed ACP route. Statistical analyses of race and ethnicity data (US Census Bureau) and Social Vulnerability Index scores (University of South Carolina’s Hazards & Vulnerability Research Institute) yielded evidence of significant differences between the areas crossed by the pipeline and reference geographies. No significant differences were found in our analyses of household income and cancer risk data.
