Abstract:

The article deals with the main problems related to the notion and ways of forming the system of investigation actions, the use of the latter contributes to the efficiency of crime investigation. It describes the sources of the formation systems of investigation actions, their functions in the resolution of intellectual tasks within the investigation. The article points to the role of planning the systems of investigation actions to investigate into specific crimes, namely, their order, possible effectiveness, expected results and applicability in the investigation. The article underscores the role of reflective thinking in estimating the expected effectiveness of their use. It is important to note that criminalistic publications have two perspectives on the formation of the concept of Methods to investigate crimes: 1) general methods for investigating crimes; 2) methods for investigating individual types of crimes. The latter concept has received much of the attention of researchers, though it lacks section of the system of investigation actions that is included only in the most recent monographs and textbooks, this once again proves its relevance as a subject for further research. The article provides recommendations on the developing of an algorithm for the system of investigation actions.

ABSTRACTAn in-depth understanding of human factors and human error is lacking in current research on seniors' falls. Additional knowledge is needed to understand why seniors are falling. The purpose of this article is to describe the adapting of the Integrated Safety Investigation Methodology (ISIM) (used for investigating transportation and industrial accidents) to studying seniors' falls. An adapted version—the Seniors Falls Investigative Methodology (SFIM)—uses a systems approach to take an investigation beyond the immediate cause of an incident and reveal unsafe acts and deeply imbedded unsafe conditions that contribute to adverse outcomes. An example case study is used to describe six phases of the investigative process in detail. The SFIM has the potential to identify safety deficiencies; utilize existing knowledge about falls; establish a standardized reporting system; shift focus from the faller to the system; and guide targeted prevention.

Abstract:

When encrypted material is discovered during a digital investigation and the investigator cannot decrypt the material then he or she is faced with the problem of how to determine the evidential value of the material. This research is proposing a methodology titled Cryptopometry. Cryptopometry extracts probative value from the encrypted file of a hybrid cryptosystem. Cryptopometry also incorporates a technique for locating the original plaintext file. Since child pornography (KP) images and terrorist related information (TI) are transmitted in encrypted formats, the digital investigator must ask the question Cui Bono?—who benefits or who is the recipient? By following Cryptopometry, the scope of the digital investigation can be extended to reveal the intended recipient. The derivation of the term Cryptopometry is also described and explained.

Abstract:

Purpose Diabetes is regarded as a global epidemic with 382 million people globally suffering from diabetes. It also has major implications on patients’ quality of life. There are also high cost of treatment associated with diabetes for both patient and healthcare provider. Telemonitoring represents an excellent technology opportunity to redefine health care delivery. Using technology for home-based care promises the ability to deliver more cost effective care whilst also enhancing quality of care and patient satisfaction. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach The current research aims to contribute to the methodological design of action research projects in their use to implementation health technologies such as telemonitoring. In particular, it seeks create a model which can be used to demonstrate the efficacy of the use of the action research method as a viable alternative to the traditional randomised control trials methodology currently employed in healthcare. Findings The paper contributes towards the methodological design to investigate the area of practice making use of the telemonitoring programme within a Victorian Health Services Network using action research. Originality/value It intends to address the research problem of the low utilisation of telemonitoring within Monash Health as a whole, and more specifically within the diabetes unit. In this context the research intends to utilise the benefits of telemonitoring to improve clinical outcomes of patients by increasing insulin stabilisation. It is also intended the research organisation benefits by increased efficiency by decreasing clinical workforce time spent on managing patient insulin data.

Abstract:

Nowadays in a difficult economic situation, frauds have become widespread in Ukraine in various spheres of human life. Increase in the number and quality of such crimes leads to significant losses of financial resources not only of citizens but of the state as a whole. Therefore, an important issue for our nowadays is the study of the mechanism of rapid, complete, and effective investigation and prevention of such crimes. In Ukraine, there is an active awareness of the population about the ways of committing such crimes and creating measures to protect confidential information. However, official statistics show a significant amount of fraud and an insufficient level of their disclosure. One of the reasons is the obsolete methods of investigating fraud and the lack of methods for investigating certain types of it. The aim of the article is to analyse scientific research in order to establish a level of methodological support for law enforcement agencies in investigating fraud. Due to the fact that methodological provision of practical divisions plays the leading role in the fast, full, and effective investigation of frauds, therefore, the studied question deserves a special attention. Methodology. The author substantiates the need to improve the existing methodological recommendations because since over time they lose their content. Besides, there is the necessity to create new techniques that are not reflected in the writings of scientists in investigating various types of fraud. Based on the analysis of forensic literature, we can make a conclusion that most of the scientific works are devoted to the investigation of fraud with financial resources. Therefore, the author proposes to pay attention to other types of fraud and to formulate methodological recommendations for practical units to young and experienced scientists on the basis of their own research. Results. The concepts and types of fraud are defined in the article. Besides, the works of criminologists, which are devoted to the peculiarities of investigating such types of crimes, are analysed. The official statistics, which impresses with data on undisclosed fraud, are presented here. This once again confirms the necessity for scientific development of the mentioned problem. A particular attention is paid to the lack of proper methodological support for practical units during the investigation of such types of crimes. In this regard, the author provides corresponding suggestions that will help to improve the investigation. Practical impact. Since the fraud investigation technique helps to the most successful achievement of the objectives of criminal justice, then in order to reduce the number of undisclosed crimes, it is necessary to develop and provide practical guidance to the methodical recommendations in a timely manner. Correlation/originality. The urgent issue of nowadays is a complete, effective investigation of criminal offenses, and fraud is no exception. The improvement of the methodology for fraud investigations and the development of methods for investigating certain types of fraud is a necessary step for it.

Abstract:

The article is devoted to the question of determining the degree of scientific development of the forensic methodology of investigation of crimes related to evasion of military service. The scientific works devoted to the methods of investigation of crimes related to evasion of military service were analyzed. It was found that the achievements of scholars who paid attention to the issues of criminal and criminalistic characteristics of crimes related to evasion of military service, unfortunately, did not lead to their unambiguous interpretation. There is no consensus as to the content of certain features of the objective side of a given criminal assault, the form and type of guilt, the qualifications and demarcation of war crimes. It is determined that the level of scientific elaboration of the problem of forming the methodology of investigation of these crimes in Ukraine is quite low today. On the other hand, it is emphasized that the practice has accumulated some experience in detecting and investigating these crimes, which, of course, requires appropriate theoretical study. It is concluded that, in the context of today, the need to scientifically develop a methodology for detecting and investigating crimes related to evasion from military service is caused by the practice necessity and appears to be extremely relevant.

Abstract:

This article examines the character of a small but detailed observational study that focused on two teams of researchers, one engaged in qualitative sociological research, the other developing statistical models. The study was presented as investigating ‘the social life of methods’, an approach seen by some as displacing conventional research methodology. The study drew on ethnomethodology, and was offered as a direct parallel with ethnographic and ethnomethodological investigations of natural scientists’ work by Science and Technology Studies scholars. In the articles deriving from this study, the authors show how even the statisticians relied on background qualitative knowledge about the social phenomena to which their data related. The articles also document routine practices employed by each set of researchers, some ‘troubles’ they encountered and how they dealt with these. Another theme addressed is whether the distinction between quantitative and qualitative approaches accurately characterised differences between these researchers at the level of practical reasoning. While this research is presented as descriptive in orientation, concerned simply with documenting social science practices, it operates against a background of at least implicit critique. I examine its character and the closely associated criticism of social research methodology and conventional social science.

Abstract:

The scientific article is devoted to the study of some aspects of the investigation of criminal offenses against morality. Peculiarities of forensic characteristics as an element of the methodology of investigation of this category of criminal offenses are considered. The author emphasizes that any method of investigating certain types of criminal offenses has a certain structure, an important element of which is the forensic characteristics. The concept of forensic characteristics as an element of methodology, quantity, content and significance of structural elements of this scientific category remain vague and contradictory. Moreover, at the turn of the millennium, the question of the expediency of the existence of forensic characteristics as a scientific category in general became acute. Therefore, it should be borne in mind that the value of forensic characteristics can be divided into practical and theoretical. For police officers who are directly involved in the investigation, the most important thing is the practical application of a tool that will help in the investigation process. It is noted that the method of investigation of certain types of criminal offenses is a system of sci-entific provisions, as well as methodological and practical recommendations developed on their basis for the investigation of certain types and groups of criminally punishable acts. It is emphasized that the structure of the studied scientific category is as follows: forensic charac-teristics of criminal offenses; analysis of primary information and initiation of criminal proceedings; cir-cumstances to be proved in criminal proceedings; typical investigative situations; features of conducting initial investigative (search) actions, covert investigative (search) actions and other measures; features of further investigative (search) actions, covert investigative (search) actions and other measures; features of the use of special knowledge during the investigation of a criminal offense; preventive activities of the investigator in relation to the causes and conditions that contributed to the commission of a criminal offense; features of the investigator's activity at the final stage of the investigation.

Abstract:

Cue reactivity has been assessed in women with bulimia nervosa both in conjunction with treatment studies and in independent laboratory investigations. Methodology for investigating cue reactivity varies widely, providing little guideline for the optimal assessment parameters. The present pilot study describes the evolution of a methodology for assessing cue reactivity in response to in vivo cues in women with bulimia nervosa. Patients' responses are compared with those of health controls. Recommendations for the standardisation of the procedure are given. The guidelines proposed have equal applicability to research on cue reactivity in the fields of substance abuse and anxiety disorders.

Abstract:

Although airbags have been shown to reduce the incidence of life-threatening injuries, they have increased the risk of minor injuries such as those to the skin. Based on the distribution of injuries that can be directly attributed to the airbag itself, it is believed that shear loading exists as a mechanism for these skin injuries. The purpose of this study was to develop a new methodology designed to assess the injury potential from different types of airbag with respect to shear loading. This new methodology utilized a high-speed impactor to accelerate the airbag fabric past a sample of skin. Contact normal forces were monitored by the use of pressure sensors, and fabric velocity was determined from a high-speed video. The abraded skin samples were analysed using light microscopic analysis and ultraviolet light source photography. A new abrasion rating method was developed called the total abrasion score, which allows for quantifiable differentiation between the abrasions caused by different airbag fabric and seam types.

This study aims to establish a structured business modelling methodology for successful implementation of Product-service system (PSS). The morphological analysis is applied in investigating the possible patterns of the PSS business model. To systematically collect the business model patterns, we have collected a set of predefined building blocks which can be used in business modelling. These building blocks are collected through investigation of actual PSS business model cases. By mixing and matching various building blocks, various innovative business model alternatives can be designed. To demonstrate our morphological chart, real case example of hair dryer company is illustrated. Abstract:

The article deals with the problematic issues of the forensics characteristics of crimes as a scientific category of forensic science and tools of cognitive activity in the disclosure and investigation of crimes. Attention is drawn to the fact that the modern stage of development of society is characterized not only by quantitative, but also by qualitative changes in the state of crime. New types of crimes are appearing and traditional methods of their commission and concealment are being improved using the achievements of scientific and technological progress. Significant parts of the crimes remain unsolved, and the persons who committed them are not punished. Law enforcement agencies are faced with the task of quickly disclosing them and protecting the violated rights of victims. Science, primarily forensic science, is called upon to provide assistance in solving such problems. In the historical aspect, the development of the theory of forensic methodology, determining its place in the system of forensic science is considered. It is noted that it is advisable to consider the forensic methodology both as a branch of science, and as a system of knowledge about the technology of investigating crimes, and the technology itself, a kind of algorithm for investigating crimes, which is implemented in the practical activities of investigators, detectives, prosecutors. Attention is drawn to the fact that since the mid-80s of the last century, the concept of criminalistics characteristics of crimes has entered the scientific circulation. Its correlation with the subject of proof and the opinions of scientists and practitioners about the place of forensic characteristics in the structure of private methods of investigation of certain types of crimes are analyzed. Based on the analysis, the author substantiates the conclusion that the forensic characterization of crimes should be considered as a structural element of a private investigation methodology and the basis for the development of such methods. Attention is drawn to the mandatory study of the correlation dependences between its elements, which can serve as a key to disclosing a specific crime.

Abstract:

Purpose This research aims to investigate the simultaneous effect of trust, subjective norm, image and perceived risk on patient loyalty. Design/methodology/approach This research used quantitative research methodology. The authors surveyed the patient of a healthcare service institution in Depok, Indonesia, and 163 of the institution patients participated in the survey. Multiple regressions analysis was performed to analyze the empirical data. Findings The findings showed that subjective norm and image have positive influence on patient loyalty. However, this research also found that trust and perceived risk do not have significant impact on patient loyalty. Research limitations/implications The author(s) used convenience sampling method, and the sample only involved respondents from a healthcare service institution in Depok, Indonesia. Hence, the findings of this research may not be generalized to the other contexts. Therefore, we recommend further research to replicate this research to examine the stability of this research’s findings. Practical implications The research results show that subjective norm and image affect the patient loyalty. Thus, the management of healthcare service institution should consider and manage all of these factors proactively. Originality/value This study is believed to be the first to develop and test patient loyalty model that includes trust, subjective norm, image, perceived risk and trust.

Robberies are crimes that particularly negatively and significantly affect the subjective sense of security (but also objective) in society. Special significance of robberies is that they are often on the edge of murder or serious bodily injury. From the criminal law and criminal investigation point of view, robberies range from the so-called "simple" cases in terms of their discovery and clarification to the very serious armed raid on individuals, money transport, legal persons such as banks and other monetary institutions. The suppression of property crimes, especially the part which includes delicts that are carried out using coercion (force and / or threat) like robberies, can be successfully carried out by methods that could be called criminalistic methods. These methods represent a kind of criminalistic engineering - criminal investigation engineering. Criminalistic engineering is all about adjusting criminal investigation tactics, forensic and legal actions and measures to special features of criminal offenses. When carrying out criminal investigation, authorized police officers must constantly take care of the so-called operational criminalistic strategy that rises above the tactical processing of a particular criminal offense, and is aimed at the creation and implementation of a complex of operational-tactical and technical measures and actions with the strategic goal of combating criminality as a whole. This is reflected in the organizational structure of the police and also in the way of criminal control which implies permanent, continuous and systematic penetration and supervision of the so-called the "dark belt" of crime.

Abstract:

We used a simulation methodology to provide a direct measurement of how incidents and accidents are investigated. Thirty-seven aviation maintenance personnel with incident investigation experience investigated are six incident scenarios that we developed from actual maintenance incidents. Using a methodology developed by Woodcock and Smiley (1999), participants were given a brief incident description and had to question the experimenter to determine how the incident happened. We counted the number and types of information requests, and recorded their sequence. Based on the sequence data we propose a five-stage model of incident investigation. An initial trigger initiates an interactive data collection/data analysis period, starting by determining spatial and temporal boundaries then investigating in a somewhat sequential manner. A stopping rule is used to determine when to stop investigating and begin the final reporting stage. The number of facts considered grows during the investigation stage, but then decreases at the reporting stage. Thus, basing recommendations on the reports of incidents may not consider all causal factors.

This paper outlines a methodology that can be used to investigate the selectivity patterns of heat stress effects. The adopted view is that heat stress causes performance to deteriorate because it depletes attentional resources. The term “selectivity” refers to the extent to which certain individual resource pools (the existence of which is postulated by multiple resource theories) are more susceptible to heat stress effects than others. The methodology consists of plotting performance of two time-shared tasks over time on the Performance Operating Characteristic (POC) space. Manipulating the difficulties of the paired tasks under the same environmental conditions (i.e., temperature level and exposure duration) produces a predictable change of the POC path. In particular, if the heat stress effects are non-selective, the POC path will rotate either clockwise or counter-clockwise depending on the task whose difficulty is increased. On the contrary, if the heat stress effects are selective, increasing the difficulty of a task will have no effect on the orientation of the POC path.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to build on Dumay and Cai’s (2014) prior research to provide a deeper analysis of the problems associated with using content analysis (CA) as a research methodology for investigating intellectual capital disclosure (ICD). Design/methodology/approach – Totally, 110 articles utilising CA as a research methodology for inquiring into ICD are analysed based on Krippendorff’s (2013) conceptual CA research framework and design logic, and tied into issues relating to CA as a research methodology for investigating ICD. Findings – The authors advocate that ICD CA researchers need to go back to the drawing board and ensure that future studies rigorously apply the basic logic of CA design. In its current state, ICD CA research needs to take a few steps back, before it can move forward. If ICD CA researchers can accomplish this, then there is an opportunity to undertake rigorous research to develop reliable and valid outputs that add to new knowledge about IC. Research limitations/implications – The main limitations of the research are the chosen sample of CA-based ICD articles and the adoption of the Krippendorff’s framework. However, the authors have identified the main corpus of CA-based ICD studies and since Krippendorff is the only recognised comprehensive text on CA as a methodology, the authors use the most appropriate data and framework possible for the analysis. Originality/value – Prior CA studies have laid the foundation for what is a popular research methodology. However, the authors argue that the popularity of CA as a research method for investigating ICD has become so great that at times the research methodology “drives the research questions” as opposed to the “research questions driving the methodology” Hence, this research examines reasons for CA limited contemporary contribution and recommends how this may be overcome rather than prescribing how to conduct ICD CA research.

While teacher-as-methodology-researcher paradigm in the area of methodology is quite firmly established, teacher-as-language-researcher is less common, especially in teacher training programmes. Much less emphasis is placed on equipping teachers (especially non-natives) with skills of language analysis, hypothesis posing, data retrieval and analysis. The use of ready-made language corpora in preparing classroom data and creating materials is still inadequately covered in teacher training programmes, let alone putting future teachers in the shoes of linguistic researchers observing the changing face of English. The purpose of this paper is to present a case for promoting teacher-as-language-researcher attitudes in the graduate teacher training programme. A case study is presented, in which student teachers were gradually introduced into New Englishes, through existing corpora, text retrieval and compilation, and — finally — do-it-yourself concordancing. The data from questionnaires and teacher diaries will illuminate upon the viability of self-made corpus compilations as a part of 21st century digital literacy.

Introduction. The paper reflects the results of reviewing the monograph by R.G. Ardashev and N.N. Kitaev “Post-Criminal Suicide of Murderers: Forensic Support of Investigation” (Ulan-Ude, The Publishing House of Buryat State University, 2020. 216 p.). Results. The authors analyzed and confirmed the relevance and scientific novelty of the proposed methodology for investigating murders associated with subsequent suicide of the criminal, typical investigative situations depending on the time of post-criminal suicide. Typical investigative versions and algorithms of the investigator's actions for their verification, including a set of investigative and other measures, are highlighted. The article analyzes the tactical features of conducting an examination of the scene of an accident and interrogation, as well as relevant forensic examinations, and indicates the need to use various methods of pathological, anatomical, and anthropological research. The review gives a high assessment of the practical significance of the monographic research, which contains appropriate information and methodological support for the investigation of crimes of this category.

Based on proper conceptual model and professional judgement, a score card for each single site can be generated, including the risk scores for the source, path and receptors. Eventually the score results of the sites can be presented on the overall map through different colour. It is an efficient and direct way which can help the decision maker to tell the priority of allocating the resource for site investigation. The ranking of the site’s score will also show an expected cost level of the sites, which could remind the developer to apply more economical strategy at early planning stage.
