Abstract:
Development of the rattan furniture industry today is quite fast although the amount of raw materials are decreasing, especially in commersial rattan commodities such as Manau, Irit, Taman, Sega, etc. Their price is quite expensive too five species of rattan were used as research materials. There are Manau (Calamus mettanensis Becc), Toho (Calamus sp), Galang (Daemonorops verticilaris Griff Mart), Hijau (Calamus sp) and simpurut (Calamus panajuga Becc). For finishing materials, clear glass melamine (ML 131 and NC 141) were used in this research with three different immersion timer for 24 hours, 36 hours and 48 hours long. An immersion method without using any finishing materials was done as control materials. Result show that the average of volume expansion of rattan speseis using NC 141 are 1,56-3,16% in Marau; 1,36-2,91%; in Toho; 2,01-3,05% in Galang; 2,12-3,20% in Hijau and 1,90-2,14 in Simpurut. In the other hand, the average of volume expansion of rattan species using melamin ML 131 are 1,27-2,58% in Marau; 1,46-2,51% in Toho; 2,30-3,23% in galang; 1,10-2,79% in Hijau and 1,45-2,55% in Simpurut. In control materials the average of expantion volume in 5 species rattans is 2,53-3,99%. From those results, the best method was shown in using NC 141 which can prevent the volume expansion and give great influence in volume expansion value. Keywords: rattan, finishing material, melamine ML 131, melamine NC 141, volume expantion.

Abstract:
The sampling of nonlithified diamictons for magnetic analyses (anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility and paleomagnetic remanence) has been restricted to samples that are either massive, clay-rich sediments, or fine-grained ones with very low pebble contents. A new method was developed that produced standard-sized 2 × 2 × 2 cm cubes of sediment from a laminated, clay-poor diamicton from southern Denmark. The sampling procedure did not affect the sample or its magnetic characteristics in any observable manner.

Abstract:
Abstract The study was carried out to screen and analyze the genetic characteristics of antimicrobial resistance in Campylobacter spp. from poultry sources. A total of 141 strains of Campylobacter isolated from samples of broilers of slaughterhouses in southern Brazil was identified by phenotypic and genotypic methods. Campylobacter isolates were evaluated for its antimicrobial susceptibility and the presence of resistance genes. The strains were investigated for antimicrobial susceptibility against two agents (ampicillin and tetracycline) by disk diffusion method. PCR assay was used to confirm the specie and the presence of ampicillin (blaOXA-61), tetracycline tet(O), and the energy-dependent multi-drug efflux pump (cmeB) genes. Campylobacter jejuni was the most ubiquitous; its presence was determined in 140 samples out of 141 (99.3%), whereas Campylobacter coli was found only in one of the contaminated samples (0.70%). The results obtained showed 65% and 35.5% of Campylobacter isolates resistant to β-lactams and tetracyclines, respectively. The cmeB gene responsible for multidrug resistance was detected in 26 isolates out 141 strains (18.5%). Moreover, 36 out of 141 Campylobacter strains (25.6%) were found to be resistant to at least two different antimicrobia resistance markers (β-lactams and tetracyclines).

Dodici, Adria Danielle. "The Relationship Between Teachers' Multicultural Attitudes and Their Instructional Practice with English Language Learners: A Mixed Method Study." PDXScholar, 2011. http://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/141.

Full text
Abstract:
Teachers of English language learners (ELLs) are often ill prepared to provide content area instruction tailored to their students' needs. This explanatory mixed method study examined the relationship between 15 ELL teachers' multicultural attitudes and use of sheltered instruction (SI). The purpose of the study was to ascertain whether teachers' multicultural attitudes influenced their use of SI. Data were gathered using a Demographic Questionnaire, Multicultural Efficacy Scale (MES), Classroom Instruction Questionnaire, and semi-structured interviews. A correlational analysis found no statistically significant relationship (i.e., r = -.34; p = .22) between participants' scores on SI observations and the MES. A correlational estimate for the four highest SI scorers indicated a relationship between the two sets of scores (i.e., r = .75; p = .25). Qualitative data did not indicate any patterns that might distinguish the high and low SIOP scorers; however, Aptitude Measurement Interaction may explain the different correlational results.

Hecksén, Alexander. "Distributed Operations : En förmåga eller en metod?" Thesis, Swedish National Defence College, Swedish National Defence College, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:fhs:diva-143.

Full text
Abstract:

The essay deals with the American concept of Distributed Operations (DO) and the Swedish development of doctrines. The essay has its origin in major Mika Ihalainens essay on DO as a future method of fighting Small Wars. This essay intends to continue with Mika Ihalainens suggestion for future research and the dual purpose of this essay is to answer the question “Is Distributed Operations a capability or a method as seen from how it was used during the Falklands war?”. It’s second purpose is to describe a concept to the Swedish Armed Forces as an example on how to deal with a low-tech enemy and also to contribute to the Swedish doctrinal development, especially re-garding the definition of the concepts capability and method. Another purpose of this essay is to open up the subject for more widened and thorough studies. This study has been carried out through a qualitative analysis where the definition of capability and method has guided the author through the empiric material and has fi-nally resulted in an attempt to decide whether DO is a capability or a method, based upon how the concept was used by the SAS during the Falklands war. The empiric ma-terial has mainly consisted of major Mika Ihalainens and major Brian L. Gilmans essays and has been complemented with their original sources. The author has also used Swedish dictionaries and doctrines for the production of the nominal definition of the central notions of the essay. The result of the essay is that Distributed Operations should be considered as a con-cept which creates, binds together and forces the development of methods with the purpose to achieve certain capabilities.

Daniels, Jason M. "Forensic and Anti-Forensic Techniques for OLE2-Formatted Documents." DigitalCommons@USU, 2008. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/141.

Full text
Abstract:
Common office documents provide significant opportunity for forensic and anti-forensic work. The Object Linking and Embedding 2 (OLE2) specification used primarily by Microsoft’s Office Suite contains unused or dead space regions that can be over written to hide covert channels of communication. This thesis describes a technique to detect those covert channels and also describes a different method of encoding that lowers the probability of detection. The algorithm developed, called OleDetection, is based on the use of kurtosis and byte frequency distribution statistics to accurately identify OLE2 documents with covert channels. OleDetection is able to correctly identify 99.97 percent of documents with covert channel and only a false positive rate 0.65 percent. The improved encoding scheme encodes the covert channel with patterns found in unmodified dead space regions. This anti-forensic technique allows the covert channel to masquerade as normal data, lowering the ability probability for any detection tool to is able to detect its presence.

Zhang, Lin. "Generalized finite element method for multiscale analysis." Diss., Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/1141.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation describes a new version of the Generalized Finite Element Method (GFEM), which is well suited for problems set in domains with a large number of internal features (e.g. voids, inclusions, etc.), which are practically impossible to solve using the standard FEM. The main idea is to employ the mesh-based handbook functions which are solutions of boundary value problems in domains extracted from vertex patches of the employed mesh and are pasted into the global approximation by the Partition of Unity Method (PUM). It is shown that the p-version of the Generalized FEM using mesh-based handbook functions is capable of achieving very high accuracy. It is also analyzed that the effect of the main factors affecting the accuracy of the method namely: (a) The data and the buffer included in the handbook domains, and (b) The accuracy of the numerical construction of the handbook functions. The robustness of the method is illustrated by several model problems defined in domains with a large number of closely spaced voids and/or inclusions with various shapes, including the heat conduction problem defined on domains with porous media and/or a real composite material.

"Having persevered with the reading of the case and the notations, the differences between this Community case and common law reports is stark. The judges in the ECJ do not use analogy, poetic language, asides, stories, counter arguments. There is a veneer of scientific detachment in the language of the Court. The style is unadorned description, technical language without explanation, assertion, the summarising without comment of a wide range of arguments by the parties, the Advocate General, and the governments wishing to make observations. When the ECJ turns to the decisions it will make, it dismisses arguments without explanation with phrases such as, ‘this is misconceived’, ‘No, this is not right’ and states ‘this is the case’ without giving reasons why. The Court argues deductively without making any attempts to refer to policy. Yet, it must surely be aware of the policy dimensions of its decisions. If it had decided against Van Gend en Loos, then the power of the fledgling Community would have been severely diminished. In the view of the Advocate General, companies would follow the national customs tariffs and not be guided by the provisions of the treaty. The ECJ may well have been taking the opportunity to assert the power of the Community over the individual Member State. This is conjecture in the absence of any comment on policy from the Court itself. Potentially powerful and persuasive arguments were put forward that the ECJ did not have the jurisdiction to hear the case; the Court merely replied that they did have jurisdiction. This was based on the grounds that the meaning behind the question raised an issue of interpretation within its jurisdiction. The Court’s simplistic decision following from this that any arithmetical change, even if it resulted from a re-classification within the existing order rather than a deliberate increase, would constitute an infringement of the treaty—is severe and open to question. In the face of arguments that would concentrate upon the intention of Member States concerning infringement, the ECJ says any arithmetical increase constitutes an infringement irrespective of intention. Indeed, much policy has to be read into all judgments of the ECJ and this judgment is no exception. Perhaps given the tensions between Member States and their creation, the EC, this is a wise and deliberate policy. The Member States gave birth to something that, in many respects, is more powerful and can dictate terms to an individual Member State." In Legal Method and Reasoning, 185. Full text
Abstract:
A reliable gearbox rating is essential for successful operation of high speed gas turbines. Presently, there is no dependable method to establish such a rating based on actual gas turbine performance under operating conditions. A great majority of manufacturers of this equipment use gas turbine output power at inlet air temperature of −20°F as the basis for this rating, while others assume an arbitrary inlet air temperature profile for turbine operation and use turbine output powers at various temperatures of the profile to derive an average rating for the gearbox. The major drawbacks of these methods are that they do not consider the effects of turbine performance characteristics and also do not include temperature profiles of actual installation sites. Thus, a vast majority of gear transmission equipment used in today’s high speed turbomachinery applications are either under- or over-rated. The procedure, as outlined in this paper, provides a reliable method to rate gearboxes for gas turbine driven equipment.

Abstract:
Object pose estimation from a single image is a fundamental and challenging problem in computer vision and robotics. Generally, current methods treat pose estimation as a classification or a regression problem. However, regression based methods usually suffer from the issue of imbalanced training data, while classification methods are difficult to discriminate nearby poses. In this paper, a hybrid CNN model, which we call it HCR-Net that integrates both a classification network and a regression network, is proposed to deal with these issues. Our model is inspired by that regression methods can get better accuracy on homogeneously distributed datasets while classification methods are more effective for coarse quantization of the poses even if the dataset is not well balanced. The classification methods and the regression methods essentially complement each other. Thus we integrate both them into a neural network in a hybrid fashion and train it end-to-end with two novel loss functions. As a result, our method surpass the state-of-the-art methods, even with imbalanced training data and much less data augmentation. The experimental results on the challenging Pascal3D+ database demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-arts significantly, achieving improvements on ACC and AVP metrics up to 4% and 6%, respectively.

Abstract:
The unsteady flow field generated by rotating rows of perforated plates and airfoil cascades are mathematically split into vortical and potential components using two methods, one relying entirely on velocity data and the other utilizing both velocity and unsteady static pressure data. The propagation and decay of these split flow perturbations are then examined and compared to linear theory predictions. The perforated plate gusts closely resemble linear theory vortical gusts. Both splitting methods indicate that they are dominantly vortical gusts with insignificant unsteady static pressure perturbations. The airfoil gusts resemble linear theory combined vortical and potential gusts. The recombined airfoil gusts using the vortical and potential components calculated by the method using only unsteady velocity data do not necessarily resemble the measured gusts, nor do they behave axially as predicted by linear theory. The recombined airfoil gusts using the linear theory components calculated by the method using both unsteady velocity and unsteady static pressure data do resemble the measured gusts and behave axially as predicted by linear theory, with the vortical component propagating unattenuated and the potential component decaying at the rate predicted by linear theory.

Abstract:
Control of hemostatic parameters of patients undergoing surgery usually involves only determination of parameters of the coagulation cascade, but not measurement of primary hemostasis. This has mainly methodological reasons. Recently a model of primary hemostasis has been introduced (Kratzer & Bom, Haemostasis 15:357; 1985) now produced under the name “ Thrombostat 4000” (VDG von der Goltz, 8221 Seeon, West Germany). This device measures computerized within minutes “ in vitro” bleeding parameters (vBP) like bleeding volume (V,ul), time (T,sec) and the viscosity depending initial flow (IF,ul/min) in a small sample (0.5-lml) of whole anticoagulated blood (Na citrate 1 to 10). The clinical relevance of the vBP was tested in patients undergoing major surgery. Results : Case 1: A 78 years old woman with osteomyelosarcoma, heavy bleeding and normal coagulation parametrs showed strongly pathological vBP: (V > 800, T > 300, IF 184); control values: (V = 177, T = 105, IF = 145); An improvement of beeding and shortening of vBP was observed after infusion of platelet concentrate: (V = 328, T = 245, IF = 147).Case 2: A 60 years old man with adenocarcinoma undergoing liver transplantation, before operation (OP) vBP: (V = 224, T = 114, IF = 182); displayed a strong increase during OP: (V > 800, T = 360, IF = 277; decreasing values after Oft (V = 348, T = 146, IF = 254); 1. day after OP: (V = 250, T = 127, IF = 221); 13 day after OP normal vBft (V = 160, T = 111, IF 182).Case 3: A 35 years old man with III. grade burnings of the skin (35%) and a massive platelet function defect: (V > 800, T > 180, IF = 328); improvement after infusion of platelet concentrate: (V = 393, T = 164, IF = 239); further improvement some hours later: (V = 240, T = 120, IF = 213); and normalizing of parameters at the 1. day: (V = 197, T = 126, IF = 186) and the 5. day after OP: (V = 130, T = 122, IF = 142).It is interesting to note that patients with heavy burnings reguarly displayed reduced vBP: (V = 120, T = 70, IF = 127) if measured very early after the accident. The new method seems to be a valuable instrument to judge platelet functions.

Abstract:
A method is outlined for determining the optimum operating conditions of a turbine-generator unit installed across a low-head irrigation structure for electrical power generation. For a given regulator’s characteristic, the unit’s rated power and design parameters are determined such that its cost-benefit ratio is minimum. The economical feasibility of the microhydro plant is studied by comparing its life-time cost to its life-time benefit. The benefit is determined by the cost of the corresponding energy generated through a diesel-driven generator set. The microhydro plant was found to be economically feasible over a wide range of inflation and interest rates.

Abstract:
Hot flowpath components in aircraft gas turbine engines are subject to a severe operating environment. The large thermal gradients can produce high thermal strains which, when combined with mechanical loads and a deleterious environment, can lead to premature failure. To combat this possibility, designers spend considerable time determining the stress and strain fields in these components as the parts undergo typical operating histories. These field quantities can then be used to determine failure parameters and determine life limiting locations. The field determinations can be difficult and, in combination with numerous potential failure mechanisms, the structural assurance process can take a considerable time to complete. To shorten this process, a personal computer (PC) based preliminary design system has been developed. This system, called Thermomechanical Fatigue – Structural Life Assessment Method (TMFSLAM), permits the user to rapidly evaluate the interactive effects of duty cycle, geometry, and materials on component life. The quantitative results determined by TMFSLAM will be available to make decisions on design changes, material substitution, etc.

Wright, Kirsten. Collecting Plant Phenology Data In Imperiled Oregon White Oak Ecosystems: Analysis and Recommendations for Metro. Portland State University, March 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.15760/mem.64.

Full text
Abstract:
Highly imperiled Oregon white oak ecosystems are a regional conservation priority of numerous organizations, including Oregon Metro, a regional government serving over one million people in the Portland area. Previously dominant systems in the Pacific Northwest, upland prairie and oak woodlands are now experiencing significant threat, with only 2% remaining in the Willamette Valley in small fragments (Hulse et al. 2002). These fragments are of high conservation value because of the rich biodiversity they support, including rare and endemic species, such as Delphinium leucophaeum (Oregon Department of Agriculture, 2020). Since 2010, Metro scientists and volunteers have collected phenology data on approximately 140 species of forbs and graminoids in regional oak prairie and woodlands. Phenology is the study of life-stage events in plants and animals, such as budbreak and senescence in flowering plants, and widely acknowledged as a sensitive indicator of environmental change (Parmesan 2007). Indeed, shifts in plant phenology have been observed over the last few decades as a result of climate change (Parmesan 2006). In oak systems, these changes have profound implications for plant community composition and diversity, as well as trophic interactions and general ecosystem function (Willis 2008). While the original intent of Metro’s phenology data-collection was to track long-term phenology trends, limitations in data collection methods have made such analysis difficult. Rather, these data are currently used to inform seasonal management decisions on Metro properties, such as when to collect seed for propagation and when to spray herbicide to control invasive species. Metro is now interested in fine-tuning their data-collection methods to better capture long-term phenology trends to guide future conservation strategies. Addressing the regional and global conservation issues of our time will require unprecedented collaboration. Phenology data collected on Metro properties is not only an important asset for Metro’s conservation plan, but holds potential to support broader research on a larger scale. As a leader in urban conservation, Metro is poised to make a meaningful scientific contribution by sharing phenology data with regional and national organizations. Data-sharing will benefit the common goal of conservation and create avenues for collaboration with other scientists and conservation practitioners (Rosemartin 2013). In order to support Metro’s ongoing conservation efforts in Oregon white oak systems, I have implemented a three-part master’s project. Part one of the project examines Metro’s previously collected phenology data, providing descriptive statistics and assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the methods by which the data were collected. Part two makes recommendations for improving future phenology data-collection methods, and includes recommendations for datasharing with regional and national organizations. Part three is a collection of scientific vouchers documenting key plant species in varying phases of phenology for Metro’s teaching herbarium. The purpose of these vouchers is to provide a visual tool for Metro staff and volunteers who rely on plant identification to carry out aspects of their job in plant conservation. Each component of this project addresses specific aspects of Metro’s conservation program, from day-to-day management concerns to long-term scientific inquiry.
