Abstract:
ABSTRACT:This Master's Final Project, whose theme is Metamorphosis: Re-use of the built heritage as a means of urban transformation, aims to look at the built city, with emphasis on the obsolete architectural heritage, as a potential moment of transition in the evolution of the territories, facing the preexistences as an opportunity to reinvent the city. From the need to apply these ideas, Setúbal emerges as a representative territory of these phenomena where the obsolescence and ruin of built structures that characterize this reality, give a potential of approach in the context of the transformation of urban fabrics. This is the case for much of the 16th century military fortifications of this city. From this point, it’s intended to think about the evolution of the city of Setúbal, having as reference these preexistences, thus giving meaning to an urban narrative of reuse and transformation. Thus, the importance of the theme of this final master's project is related to the desire to value the history and memory of the territories without, on the one hand, the urban tissues remaining crystallized in time or, in opposition, the will to intervene to override identity of this heritage. Following the identification of a specific phenomenon in the urban and historical context of the city of Setúbal, the proposal suggests that these ruins of the military heritage be an integral part of the system of public spaces. In addition, it is expected that, associated with cultural programs, it promotes the enjoyment of all, starting from a premise of not only preserving the heritage, but also giving it a sense of opportunity and continuity.

ABSTRACT: Setubal arises from the fusion of the Sea with the River and their connection to the Land. However, due to its evolutionary process and transformations over time, such connection is being dimed, and the city of Setubal is leaving the Sado River behind. This reckoning leads to a difficult articulation between the river and, particularly, the old core of the city. With this understanding, the scope of this proposal intends to reclaim the structural relationship that has been lost between the river and the city, through the dematerialization of its current margin, re-interpreting it through its memory. What is projected is the creation of a new margin, for a de-limit that unites the river back to the city of Setubal, from pre-existing decadent structures currently at abandonment, such as Baluarte do Livramento, cais 3, Bairro das Fontainhas, Bairro da Bela Vista, Terminal Marítimo do Sado and the Central Termoeléctrica de Setúbal. As a result, it is proposed a new image for the city, that builds by destroying, and that lays on the notion of a contemporary ruin – preserving its essence and displaying the story of this city. The presented proposal aims to build a cohesion founded on a new nexus for the unaccredited traces, through a re-signification of these industrial fragments based on their memory.

ABSTRACT: The city-river bond reveals an important facet of the identity and growth of the riverside region. It allows the city to open up to the water and to build a symbolic space between the territory and the human figure. This project formalizes the desire to transform the urban structure of Setúbal and bring it closer to the river under the internal awareness of it’s identity and memory. In a careful analisys, we reveal the suports on which the city has developed, exposing a growing conquest over the river. Nowadays, this piece of land conquered to the water is a fragmented and unconsolidated space, which is a result of the lack of cohesive growth of the city, specialy the port and industrial areas. These port structures disjointed with the city create the opportunity to rethink the urban morfology and their relation with the river. Based on this historical reference, we propose a reflection on the main reasons for the progressive distance between the city and the river along the years. The project approach explores a vision for the city articulating theory and practice, reading and project, based on an exercise in urban and architectural composition. This riverside transformation rewards it’s memory and vestiges of identity barelly immersing on the territory. The project focus on the waterfront area of Bairro das Fontainhas as an object of study where the scale and monumetalization of the water is explored. The proposal develops different relationships between the water and the built space, influencing people’s behavior towards their use of the place. That said, we propose a new formal and funtional existence, built with the identity and memory of the place, grating it new spacialities capable of lasting over time.

Á escala do objeto arquitetónico, o projeto procura reinventar o Livramento.
ABSTRACT : The city of Setúbal was born from direct relation with Sado, due to its fishing activities. However, in the passing years, this activity became less and less popular which led to a fracture in the relation that the city had with the river. Nowadays, the Setubal’s riverfront is established by a sequence of landfills, which wall off the relation of the river with the inner city. Through the analysis of the region and its history, it is unquestionable the necessity of reforming the waterfront and getting the bulwarks closer to the water. This would improve the livelihood of urban life. So, the project focuses on a reflection about the transformation of the city, looking to comprehend in which way we can take what already exists as an opportunity to transform the city. Thus, the proposed intervention re-invents Setubal’s waterfront through its pre-existences, to preserve the memory of the place. The proposal comes from the will of recovering the direct relation with the Sado river, and also of finding a solution to the city problems. This will be done by reforming the waterfront with different areas and equipment that will join and promote the urban life, and so transforming the river shore as the structural elemental of the city of Setúbal. In the scale of the architectural object, the project expects to re-invent the Livramento.

ABSTRACT: This final master's project theme is METAMORPHOSIS. Perceive the river bank as a Sensory EXPERIENCE. Setúbal Transformation between the Embankment and Albarquel Fort. This METAMORPHOSIS theme was chosen thinking about cities and all the processes of metamorphosis, i.e., transformations suffered by cities constantly. This proposal takes place in the city of Setúbal, specifically between the Embankment and the Albarquel Fort. Setúbal has gone through some periods of urban and demographic evolution, which characterize the progression of the city itself and help us understand some of Setúbal's weaknesses and potentialities. As such, BANK and LAND are the basis of this proposal through pathways. The aim is to go trough Setúbal, turning the path from pier 3 to Albarquel Fort a sensory experience, through the reconfiguration of the bank and the regeneration of Albarquel Fort which is still in disuse, thus providing them with new uses and new spaces, by enhancing the sensations that are always present in our daily lives. The concern is how to ensure viable public and built spaces for both distinct and pleasent functions.

ABSTRACT: This final project creates its proposal over a concentrated view of the medieval part of Setúbal. An historic zone with strong characteristics and with a great potential for progress, nevertheless it has been forgotten over the years increasing the obsolescence of its buildings. The strategy it´s created on neighborhood of Fontainhas and São Domingos, old fishing districts, where the present of obsolete it’s more significative, both physically with the degradation of the buildings, as atmospheric, where the lake of residents and the absence of services affect the human life in the neighborhood and consequently in the spaces maintenance. The strategy as developed with a principal objective of restoring the neighborhood life of this place. A method to bring new population, without losing the usual atmosphere of a piscatorial district where everybody lives in community. The found solution that is developed in this thesis, it’s the creation of leisure spaces that are directly connected to the habitations, allowing them to work as a community terrace, providing meeting and sharing between residents. In overall, the strategy boils down on a secondary system of circulation, with a more private character, inside of the neighborhood, that go through public buildings and courtyards. Its creation involves the construction of courtyards, in the urban voids that exists inside the city blocks and the transformation of the obsolete buildings. In order to guarantee the viability of the new routes and courtyards, these in addition to interconnecting the spaces and singular buildings in the neighborhood, as such the Church of Boa Hora, The Convent of São Domingos, the cemetery and the sightseeing of Fontainhas, there is also the transformation of the obsolete buildings, that is previously mentioned, given then a more public use, as a market, restaurants, etc., as a way to attracted population and giving the possibility to cross inside the city blocks and streets.

Abstract:
There is a link between the tactile and optical modes of perception. Woven textiles’ materiality and ability to take three dimensional form, make them a good medium for creating shapes containing several pattern scales and textures. By conciously working with tactile-visual qualities and aesthetics one can achieve the most powerful effects, and in turn, the textile can take the role of a sensation director. By interpreting Kasuri with large scaled threads on a computerized hand loom and in space, an exploration of details and spatial installation can be conducted simultaneously. The five examples developed in this project demonstrate different approaches to dimensional hand weaving, intending to build a better understanding of micro and macro spatial features in woven textiles. Significantly, the project challenges the scale of hand weaving as well as the design process: stretching from thread to dimensional weave empowers the designer. By highlighting crafted details on a large scale, a sequence of events can be discerned that makes the spectator aware of quality and of the production process. Parallels between the body of work and our perception of lines and interspaces are drawn as an attempt to refine our relation to the objects around us.

Abstract:
This thesis began by studying how a temporary event could create permanent architecture and how that architecture could change an urban lifestyle. I chose the Olympics as the event and proposed that they be held in Washington D.C., a city of international prominence with a rich design history but a city that hasn't had a large scale urban redevelopment plan in over a century. I focused on the city east of the Capitol as I wanted to extend the monumental core created in the McMillan plan. I researched baroque design, Olympic planning, and even the original L'Enfant plan. The result of this research was unearthing some of the original L'Enfant design elements and incorporating them into a 21st century city by blending new design issues with the idea of a city designed around radial vistas with magnificent termini. I focused on two sites, the Olympic Torch and the Olympic Stadium. The Torch is situated as a terminus on a site that was intended to be mile marker zero for the country. Its design and importance make it a monument while still not impeding the views. The stadium was created to serve as a stadium for the people, allowing pedestrians outside to view and interact with the event inside. It is sunken so as not to obstruct views but it is spanned by arches that pierce the cityscape signifying its monumentality and appropriately ending the monumental axis started with the Lincoln Memorial on the western edge of the city.

As shadows lengthen over academe, I sit before its pillars, preoccupied by dusky images that will not materialize. The format and contents of this extended essay do not readily 'fit' into the traditional agenda of International Relations. Yet, Metamorphosis does address this agenda, but in a wholly iconoclastic manner. The style, composition and conclusions - or lack thereof - have been consciously produced to continually challenge and provoke the reader, so as to try and fracture the natural order of things, and insert the intractable subjective commitments by scholars - to various politics and beliefs - into the framework of analysis.

Abstract:
Looking at a number of habitats disconnected from consumer society, this thesis explores how autonomous and “poètical” ways of doing and making turn out to enact in concrete terms the recurring — but, so far, mostly theoretical — theme of “poetical dwelling”. Using the notions of the “poetical” as well as its Greek root of “poïesis” — closely linked with the idea of physical and organic transformation — this study questions the relation between linguistic and cultural productions on the one hand, and, on the other hand, the material aspects of lifestyles driven by an urge for socio-economic emancipation. As this research shows, autonomous habitats can first be characterized by how closely their metabolic elements are intertwined. However, their real specificity lies in the way these physical enmeshments develop and irradiate at the aesthetic and symbolical levels, weaving together the interior and the exterior, the human and the non-human, matter and meaning. Seeing these various webs enfolding throughout autonomous habitats casts a new light onto ecological habitations reassessed as poetical “weaving machines”, while mankind is brought closer to the caddisfly, the insect employed by jewellers for the fine golden sheath it is able to weave around itself using what lies in its surroundings. Through the specific lens of the “poetical” category, this thesis therefore documents the daily making and maintaining of this golden sheath within ecological habitats. While doing so, it showcases in a fresh and unprecedented way the embodied — and political — nature of language and imagination.

The project consists in studying different aspects of the regulation of insect metamorphosis, using the cockroach Blattella germanica and the mayfly Cloeon dipterum, as laboratory models. In B. germanica the idea has been to study the possible role of Myoglianin in regulation of the decrease of juvenile hormone production that occurs at the beginning of the last nymphal instar. Also, to study the possible role of the adult specifier factor E93 in the destruction of the PG after the imaginal molt. In C. dipterum the plan has been to study the mechanisms that regulate metamorphosis, particularly during the formation of the subimago, and to compare these mechanisms with those operating in neopteran insects, which are condensed in the so-called MEKRE93 pathway.

Abstract:
The late postmodern texts by East-German playwright Heiner Muller are intricately structured historical-mythological montages characterized by an insurgent fragmentation of 'dramatic action' and a cryptic density of verbal and visual metaphorization. Indeed, Muller's radical dramaturgical approach has been described as the 'poetics of destruction’, a term which pertains to the dramatist's own theories about the contemporary exigencies of maintaining the vital social and political function of the theater. Texts such as Die Hamletmaschine are frequently evaluated as incoherent and abstruse disfigurements of the original from which they are derived. It is the purpose of this study to examine two closely related plays of Muller's late canon -- Die Hamletmaschine (1977) and Der Auftrag (1979) -- and to reveal the striking consistency and coherence of the postmodern dramatist's transposition of a fourfold motif-cluster from Shakespeare's Hamlet. However, the author's exegetical analyses aim not only at an investigation of Muller's postmodern aesthetical aberrations. They reveal, moreover, how the Shakespearean motif-cluster becomes the marxist's tool to assimilate the historical and political context of the late 1970's from a marxist perspective. The two texts selected from Muller's canon investigate the possibility and the reasons for the failure of the socialist-marxist and the French revolutions. Concurrently, the two dramas focus on the 'authentic' role and function of the intellectual revolutionary in the historical process . The transposition of the "Shakespearean" theatrum-mundi metaphor, furthermore, allows Muller to integrate a coherent metatheatrical dimension into his plays. In Die Hamletmaschine, the dramatist contemplates the social and political function of the theater and of the 'intellectual' theater-maker within the contemporary historical context of 1977. In Der Auftrag, the metatheatrical dimension of the motif-cluster implicitly criticizes the political structure of the theater as an institution as well as the hierarchical mechanisms of conventional theater-making.

Abstract:
The evolutionary success of insects was particularly shaped by the innovation of the metamorphosis, especially by the transition from hemimetaboly to holometaboly. The mechanisms underlying this evolutionary transition represent an unsolved question, although different approaches have been used to study them. In the present thesis we followed a transcriptomic approach, comparing data on mRNA and miRNA expression in key developmental moments, comprising embryonic and postembryonic stages, in species representing the hemimetabolan and holometabolan modes. Most of the work has been carried out in the hemimetabolan species Blattella germanica, but we have used also other reference species for comparison, especially the holometabolan Drosophila melanogaster and Tribolium castaneum. The results show that there are not qualitative gene differences between holometabolan and hemimetabolan species, but differences in patterns of expression and potential networking of orthologous genes. Transcription factors, epigenetic modifiers, and miRNAs appear as important players in both developmental modes.

Doctoral thesis, Universidade do Minho, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10198/1411.

Full text
Abstract:
The gradual affirmation of the information society is an irreversible process. The social and technological motivations which were in the genesis of the information society are now extended to other paradigms. The social and organizational domains are themselves a main target of the information society, whose consequences originate the recognition of a new commercial way, known as Electronic Commerce. The Electronic Commerce claims for itself a deep revision of the theories, models, concepts and commercial attitudes. As far as new technological possibilities and opportunities are concerned, the revision of commercial activity needs an innovator reference , which not only deals with technological aspects but also with an integrated vision of this own paradigm with social, organizational and commercial aspects. The absence of the needed “conceptual” tools to the realization of the Electronic Commerce activity has caused the conception of a referential, named Metamorphosis. As far as the referential is concerned, we must emphasize, among other contributes, the proposal of an architecture and respective models of organic, functional, and technologic order, which were in the basis of the elaboration of an Electronic Commerce prototype. The realization of a case study ”RuralNet”, developed and tested in a real management environment allowed the analysis and evaluation, in context, of the possibilities of the technological potentialities reinforcing the scientific knowledge in the information systems domains and the validation of the proposed constructions as far as Metamorphosis is concerned.

Abstract:
My dissertation investigates questions of boredom and architecture in the middle decades of the twentieth century through the work of two figures: the American-Italian architect Robert Venturi (b. 1925) and the Romanian-born American architect and artist Saul Steinberg (1914-1999). The topic of boredom in architecture, and specifically within this timeframe, has been largely ignored in architectural history, theory, and criticism where, with the exception of a few articles, there is no consistent body of scholarship on this issue. Looming large in the sterile iterations of various –isms boredom remains critical in contemporary architectural practice as the production and obsolescence of images becomes ever faster with new technologies. Quickly saturated with information presented in fleeting displays that are easy to produce, easy to delete, and easy to consume, as soon as our expectation for novelty and change fails to satisfy us, we fall back into the loop of boredom. While boredom as the dissociation of person from place has raised architects' interest especially during the middle decades of the twentieth century, there is no significant scholarship on this topic. In this context, my research looks at the work of two architects who go beyond the attractive rhetoric of boredom and explore its potential as both a critical and a generative tool.

Henriksson, Tracey. "The metamorphosis of the Conservative Party under Thatcher." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/30679.

Full text
Abstract:
In the postwar era, there has been a change in the nature of the British Conservative Party caused by the adoption of classical liberal ideas antithetical to its principles. This trend rapidly accelerated during the leadership of the Party by Margaret Thatcher who appeared oblivious to the fundamental incompatibility of liberalism and conservatism. She attempted to weld them together in her economic and social policies creating strong internal tensions within what was dubbed "Thatcherism". This clash became more pronounced as her reign as British Prime Minister continued and was part of the reason for her eventual downfall at the hands of her own party. To illustrate the conversion of the Conservative Party to a more liberal standpoint we will consider two modern day political thinkers and the popularity of their positions. This approach is taken because their philosphies parallel the thinking of the postwar Conservative Party before Thatcher and under Thatcher's leadership. Michael Oakeshott, who fits into the conservative tradition and Friedrich Hayek, who embodies liberalism. Oakeshott's philosophy is in sharp contrast at important points to the ideas of Hayek, a self-confessed and proud liberal, whose ideas nevertheless found favour within the Conservative Party while many integral parts of conservatism, of which Oakeshott is a representative, were pushed aside. The stridency and harshness with which Thatcher preached the doctrine of economic liberalism and ideology and also tried to retain certain conservative ideals such as, authority, nationalism and militarism constituted a serious and damaging tension within her programme as well as demonstrating the depth of the change that had occurred in the Conservative Party. This thesis seeks to point out these changes and illustrate the adverse effects caused by attempting to turn the Conservative Party into a promoter of classical liberal ideology and thereby partially explain the increasing shakiness of Thatcherism in the 1980's. Even though its leader never lost faith in its convictions or her determination to translate them into concrete policies .

Abstract:
Baotou owes its existence to its raw material resource, and iron and rare earth industry. Because of cheap labor, low cost and lax vat the world rare earth political economy with more than 95% of production. Increasing demand of rare earth due to our modern culture and consumption has turned the 12km2 tailing pond as a 'toxic leftover of global capitalism'. My thesis is asking questions of how a city at the edge will survive in the future. In this case, it is an extreme scenario of resource depletion, environmental destruction, and large number of unemployment caused by modern consumerism. The thesis is a questioning imaginary of a waste urbanism, that intentionally propose a major transformation of urban metamorphosis by rethinking the economic and ecological value of industrial waste, especially with its complicated connection to globval network. By understanding the operational mechanisms of the city globally, the operational mechanisms of the city globally, nationally and locally, I intervene into the flows of material, migration, economy and politics at regional and local scale. This thesis is asking a question and exploring the alternative future of a resource-extract industry city like Baotou. Connect how a global modern culture reflects on a local landscape. And explore the extreme potential of economy as driving force of urbanization.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of my research was to examine the physiology and behavior of metamorphosing oysters, Crassostrea virginica, and to investigate the effects of low oxygen stress on metamorphic processes. Specifically, I examined the effects of hypoxia (20% of air saturation) and microxia (&<&1% of air saturation) on settlement, survival, growth, morphology, metabolic rate and feeding on post-settlement oysters. All of the functions I measured were adversely affected by hypoxia and microxia, compared to normoxic controls. Survival times indicate that, like larvae and adults, post-settlement oysters are capable of anaerobic metabolism. The 2 week period following settlement is especially critical to recruitment. Low oxygen conditions increases mortality and have detrimental effects on the development and growth of post-settlement oysters. Oysters have the ability to feed at nearly all stages of settlement and metamorphosis. While hypoxic conditions reduce feeding only in the youngest metamorphosing oysters, microxic conditions affect all ages. Not only does weight-specific metabolism decrease as the oysters grow, but metabolic responses to low oxygen change from relatively oxygen independent to oxygen dependent. I conclude that oyster distribution may be influenced by low oxygen, especially in those areas that experience prolonged (24-48 h) hypoxia or severe microxic events. Low oxygen events may control recruitment into the adult population directly, because of larval settlement failure and post-settlement mortality, and indirectly, because of reduction in feeding, development rate, and growth of post-settlement oysters.

Abstract:
Everyday we find ourselves making hundreds of decisions, often without noticing the relevance of even the most miniscule choice that can grow and form into a life altering state of mind. The human brain is the most elaborately complex structure in existence, enabling us to be able to function and comprehend our surroundings. With complexity, also comes malfunctions, which will inevitably occur occasionally ranging in a wide variety of defects from mental illnesses, to super genius abilities. What a certain individual may see as reality, may be completely opposite of the reality you or I see. This poses the question, who decides which reality is true? This paper contains documentation of my research and process through writing and performing an original short film confronting observations that we all experience in our daily lives in the form of a very extreme circumstance that will attempt to force a new way of thinking about what ties us all together as a species, despite our many unique and diverse perceptions. "Metamorphosis" was shown November 30th, 2012 as a short film. To coincide with the film, a promotional website was made to accompany the piece, as well as graphics.
