Abstract:
Photocatalysis has been attracting much research interest because of its wide applications in renewable energy and environmental remediation. Among the photocatalysts, metal oxide semiconductors are the best choice due to distinctive properties, durability and cost effectiveness. However, the mechanisms of photocatalysis are still not entirely clear and the photocatalytic activity of the metal oxide materials needs to be improved. Therefore, this thesis concentrates on the study of the photocatalytic mechanism and the factors affecting the photocatalytic activity. The photocatalysis of different commercial metal oxide nanoparticles has been studied. Different photocatalytic experiments have been designed to find out the mechanisms of photocatalysis. It is found that the dominant mechanism of photocatalysis is direct charge transfer between metal oxide and organic compounds. Reactive oxygen species, such as hydroxyl radicals also play a minor role in the photocatalysis. ZnO tetrapods were synthesized by evaporating Zn powder in the flow of Ar gas at high temperature in this study. They exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity. By the comparison between ZnO tetrapods and different ZnO nanoparticles, it is found that the photocatalytic activity of the metal oxide is strongly affected by the native defects, especially by the nonradiative defects. 1D TiO2 nanotubes and ZnO nanorods were synthesized by anodization and hydrothermal growth respectively. ZnO nanorods with alumina and titania shell were prepared by solution-based methods. These structures are interesting as supported catalysts, which is important for practical applications, since it enables simple removal of photocatalyst from treated water. The core shell structures are expected to improve the stability of ZnO. The results also imply that the photocatalytic avtivity of materials is affected by the native defects. Two different solution based methods hydrothermal growth and electrodeposition to grow CuxO layer were used. The hydrothermal grown CuxO exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity and good photocorrosion resistance. It was also found that the photocatalytic activity of the CuxO prepared by hydrothermal methods can be recovered by simple immersion of the sample into the precursor solution.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates the electrochemical oxidation of phenol. Phenol is a major toxin and water pollutant. In addition, during water treatment it reacts with chlorine to produce carcinogenic chlorophenols. lts treatment down to trace levels is therefore of increasing concern. For this purpose, dynamically stable anodes for the breakdown of phenols to carbon dioxide or other less harmful substances were developed and characterized. The anodes were prepared from mixed oxides of tin (Sn) and the precious metals ruthenium (Ru), tantalum (Ta) and iridium (Ir), which in tum were prepared using sol-gel techniques. This involved dip-coating the aqueous salts of the respective metals onto titanium substrates and heating to temperatures of several hundreds of degree Celsius. The properties of these mixed oxide thin films were investigated and characterized using thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), elemental dispersive energy X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and electrochemical measurements. A variety of different electrode materials including Til Sn02-Ru02-Ir02, Ti/Ta20s-Ir02 and Ti/RhOx-Ir02 were developed and tested for their potential as oxidation catalysts for organic pollutants in wastewaters. Depending on the anode type, phenol was found to be electrochemically degraded, to different extents, on these surfaces during electrolysis. It was however found that the oxidation rate not only depended on the chemical composition but also on the oxide morphology revealed, resulting from the preparation procedure. The Ti/SnOz-Ru02-Ir02 film was found to be the most efficient surface for the electrolytic breakdown of phenol. This film oxidized phenol at a potential of 200 mV vs Ag/AgC!. The activity of the catalytic systems was evaluated both on the basis of phenol removal efficiency as well as the kinetics of these reactions. Phenol removal efficiency was more than 90% for all the film surfaces prepared and the rate of the reaction followed first order kinetics. A pathway for the electrochemical degradation of phenol was derived using techniques such as HPLC to identify the breakdown products. These pathway products included the formation of benzoquinone and the further oxidation of benzoquinone to the carboxylic acids malic, malonic and oxalic.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die onderwerp van hierdie studie is die elektrochemiese oksidasie van fenol deur nuwe gemengde-oksied elektrodes. Fenol is 'n belangrike gifstof en besoedelingsmiddel in water. Daarbenewens kan fenolook met chloor reageer tydens waterbehandeling om sodoende karsinogeniese chlorofenole te vorm. Dit is dus belangrik dat metodes ondersoek word wat die konsentrasie van fenol in water verminder. Hierdie studie behels die bereiding en karakterisering van nuwe dinamiese stabiele anodes (DSA) vir die afbreek van fenol tot koolstofdioksied en ander minder gevaarlike verbindings. Hierdie nuwe anodes is berei vanaf die gemengde-okside van die edelmetale tin (Sn), ruthenium (Ru), tantalum (Ta) en iridium (Ir), met behulp van sol-gel tegnieke. Die finale stap in die bereiding behels kalsinering van die oksides by temperature van "n paar honderd grade Celsius. Hierdie nuwe elektrodes is later gebruik om die oksidasie van fenol te evalueer. Die gemengde-oksied dunlae/anodes IS d.m.v. die volgende analitiesetegnieke gekarakteriseer: termiese-gravimetriese analise (TGA), skandeerelektronmikroskopie (SEM), atoomkragmikroskopie (AFM), elementverstrooiingsenergie- X-straalanalise (EDX), X-straaldiffraksie (XRD), Rutherford terug-verstrooiingspektroskopie (RBS), partikel-geinduseerde X-straal emissie (PIXE), en elektrochemiese metings. 'n Verskeidenheid elektrodes van verskillende materiale is berei en hul potensiaal as oksidasie-kataliste vir organiese besoedelingsmiddels in afloopwater bepaal. Hierdie elektrodes het die volgende ingesluit: Ti/Sn02-Ru02-Ir02, Ti/Ta20s-Ir02 en Ti/RhOx-Ir02. Gedurende elektrolise is fenol elektrochemies afgebreek tot verskillende vlakke, afhangende van die tipe elektrode. Die oksidasietempo het egter nie alleen van die chemiese samestelling van die elektrode afgehang nie, maar ook van die morfologie van die okside, wat op hulle beurt van die voorbereidingsprosedure afgehang het. Daar is bevind dat die Ti/Sn02-Ru02-Ir02 elektrode die mees effektiewe oppervlakke vir die afbreek van fenol is. Hier het die oksidasie van fenol by 'n potensiaal van 200 mV plaasgevind. Die aktiwiteite van die katalitiese sisteme IS bepaal op grond van hulle fenolverwyderingsdoeltreffendheid. Die kinetika van die reaksies is ook bepaal. Al die elektrodes het >90% fenolverwyderingsdoeltreffendheid getoon en die reaksietempos was van die eerste-orde. Deur van analitiese tegnieke soos hoëdrukvloeistofchromatografie (HPLC) gebruik te maak is die afbreekprodukte van fenol geïdentifiseer en 'n skema vir die elektrochemiese afbreek van fenol uitgewerk. Daar is bevind dat bensokinoon gevorm het, wat later oksidasie ondergaan het om karboksielsure te vorm.

Metal oxides are important materials that are being developed for use in research and health-related applications. In particular, TiO2 and ZnO nanomaterials for applications in antibacterial coatings, pollutant purification, and photovoltaic devices have been extensively studied. The photocatalytic performances are highly dependent on morphology and crystal structure. However, there are few studies are comparing pollutant purification and antibacterial behavior of different TiO2 nanostructures and less studies of antibacterial activity related to fundamental properties of ZnO. In this study, the details of proposed mechanism and principle of antibacterial mechanisms of metal oxide nanostructures has been examined. Different TiO2 nanostructures (nanotubes, nanorods) have been successfully synthesized and their photocatalytic properties have been studied. In addition, studies of basic properties of commercial ZnO nanoparticles related to antibacterial activity have been performed.

Abstract:
In order to clarify the role that water plays in the photocatalytic process, changes in the IR and Raman spectra of P25 TiO₂ thin films were observed upon exposure to liquid water. Further investigation of these spectral changes via dehydration of thin films under nitrogen and oxygen of different humidities led to the observation of spectroscopic features that have been assigned to localised surface phonon modes. When the effect of UV irradiation on these features was investigated, a broad IR absorption due to transitions of electrons in shallow traps was detected under dry nitrogen but not under dry oxygen. Further investigation of the photocatalytic properties of P25 TiO₂ showed a complete removal of a stearic acid film. The final products have been tentatively assigned to a mixture of short chain carbonyl species and adsorbed carbonates as well as carbon dioxide and water. The IR spectrum of the fuel cell membrane material Nafion is complex and literature data varies in some of the assignments. The compound perfluoro(2-ethoxyethane)sulfonic acid was used as a model compound for the Nafion side chain resulting in a clearer assignment of the Nafion IR spectrum. In light of these new assignments changes induced in the region 1100-1300 cm⁻� by variation in humidity and ion exchange have been shown to be mainly the result of changes in the sulfonate asymmetric stretching modes. By flowing a series of solutions containing tetramethylammonium ions and perchlorate ions the surface charge characteristics of a Pt black film were determined in the pH range 2-12. There proved to be a weak positive charge below pH 4 and a weak negative charge above pH 9. Between these points there appeared to be no overall charge on the surface. When perfluoro(2-ethoxyethane)sulfonic acid was adsorbed to a Pt black film changes in its IR spectrum indicated a strong binding via interactions between the sulfonate groups and the Pt surface. The nature of the adsorption of Nafion was less clear cut and, whilst adsorption is strong, it seems possible that hydrophobic interactions between the Nafion backbone and the surface are involved.

Los óxidos de perovskita fuertemente correlacionados son una clase de materials con fascinantes propiedades físicas intrínsecas debido a la interacción de efectos de carga, spin, órbita y cristalinos. Efectos exóticos, como superconductividad, ferromagnetismo, ferroelectricidad o transiciones metal-aislante se producen gracias a la competición de los diferentes grados de libertad del sistema. El uso de estos efectos en una nueva generación de dispositivos es una fuente de inspiración continua para la comunidad científica. Los dispositivos de Memoria Resistiva de Acceso aleatorio (RRAM) son uno de los candidatos más prometedores para ganar la carrera hacia la memoria universal del futuro, debido a sus excelentes propiedades en términos de escalabilidad, fatiga frente a ciclado, retención y velocidad de operación. Están basadas en el efecto de Conmutación Resistiva (RS), dónde dos (o más) estados de resistencia, reversibles y no volátiles son inducidos mediante la aplicación de un campo eléctrico intenso. Este fenómeno ha sido observado en una gran variedad de óxidos, donde es ampliamente aceptado que el movimiento de oxígeno juega un papel fundamental para explicar su origen. Sin embargo, el mecanismo físico preciso que gobierna el efecto depende del material, y en algunos de ellos, dicho mecanismo aún no es comprendido en su totalidad. Esta falta de compresión es hoy en vía es uno de los cuellos de botella que está retrasando el uso generalizado de esta tecnología. En esta tesis, presentamos un novedoso mecanismo de RS basado en la Transición Metal-Aislante (MIT) perovskitas metálicas con correlación electrónica fuerte. Hemos estudiado el comportamiento RS de tres diferentes familias de perovskitas metálicas: La1-xSrxMnO3, YBa2Cu3O7-d y RENiO3 y demostramos que estos tres sistemas con conducción mixta eletrónica-iónica pueden experimentar una MIT, como consecuencia de la aplicación del campo eléctrico intenso, y que puede transformar su volumen bulk. Esta conmutación resistiva de carácter volúmico tiene una naturaleza diferente the los usuales tipos filamentar e interfacial, y abre nuevas oportunidades para el diseño de nuevos dispositivos robustos. Hemos caracterizado conciencudamente el efecto de RS a la nanoescala mediante Microscopía de Fuerzas Atómicas en modo Conducción (C-AFM). Espectroscopía de Fuerza Túnel (STS) y medidas de transporte dependientes de la temperatura han sido realizadas en los diferentes estados resistivos para obtener detalles de su estructura electrónica. Hemos reproducido con éxito el comportamiento memristivo nanoscópico en una escala micrómetrica mediante el uso de sondas de W-Au en una estación de puntas. Usando esta aproximación, hemos llevado a cabo medidas en diferentes atmósferas, las cuales sugieren el intercambio de oxígeno con la atmósfera. Además, presentamos una prueba de concepto de una configuración de tres terminales, donde la conmutación resistiva es inducida en la puerta del dispositivo. En el caso particular del superconductor YBa2Cu3O7-d, hemos estudiado la influencia en las propiedades superconductoras de zonas de alta resistencia embebidas en la matriz del material. Esta aproximación sienta las bases hacia el diseño de dispositivos con zonas de anclaje de vórtices reconfigurables. La interpretación de los resultados se hará en términos de una transición volúmica de tipo Mott, que estimamos ser de validez general para perovskitas metálicas de óxidos complejos.
Strongly correlated perovskite oxides are a class of materials with fascinating intrinsic physical functionalities due to the interplay of charge, spin, orbital ordering and lattice effects. The exotic phenomena arising from these competing degrees of freedom include superconductivity, ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity and metal-insulator transitions, among others. The use of these exotic phenomena in a new generation of devices with new and enhanced functionalities is continuing inspiring the research community. In this sense, Resistive-Random Access Memories (RRAM) are one of the most promising candidates to win the race towards the universal memory of the future, which could overcome the limitations of actual technologies (Flash and Dynamic-RAM), due to their excellent properties in terms of scalability, endurance, retention and switching speeds. They are based on the Resistive Switching effect (RS), where the application of an electric field produces a reversible, non-volatile change in the resistance between two or more resistive states. This phenomenon has been observed in a large variety of oxide materials, where the motion of oxygen is widely accepted to play a key role in their outstanding properties. However, the exact mechanism governing this effect is material-dependent and for some of them it is still far to be understood. This lack of understanding is actually one of the main bottlenecks preventing the widespread use of this technology. In this thesis, we present a novel Resistive Switching mechanism based on the Metal-Insulator Transition (MIT) in metallic perovskite oxides with strong electron electron interaction. We analyse the RS behaviour of three different families of metallic perovskites: La1-xSrxMnO3, YBa2Cu3O7-δ and RENiO3 and demonstrate that the MIT of these mixed electronic-ionic conductors can be tuned upon the application of an electric field, being able to transform the entire bulk volume. This volume RS is different in nature from interfacial or filamentary type and opens new possibilities of robust device design. Thorough nanoscale electrical characterization of the RS effect in these systems has been performed by means of Conductive-Atomic Force Microscopy (C-AFM). Scanning Tunnelling Spectroscopy (STS) and temperature-dependent transport measurements were performed in the different resistive states to get insight into their electronic features. The nanoscale memristive behaviour of these systems is successfully reproduced at a micrometric scale with W-Au tips in probe station experiments. Using this approach, atmosphere dependent measurements were undertaken, where oxygen exchange with the ambience is strongly evidenced. In addition, we present a proof-of-principle result from a 3-Terminal configuration where the RS effect is applied at the gate of the device. In the particular case of superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-δ films, we have studied the influence of high resistance areas, which are embedded in the material, on the superconducting transport properties enabling vortex pinning modification and paving the way towards novel reconfigurable vortex pinning sites. We interpret the RS results of these strongly correlated systems in terms of a Mott volume transition, that we believe to be of general validity for metallic perovskite complex oxides. We have verified that strongly correlated metallic perovskite oxides are a unique class of materials very promising for RS applications due to its intrinsic MIT properties that boosts a robust volumetric resistive switching effect. This thesis settles down the framework to understand the RS effect in these strongly correlated pervoskites, which could eventually lead to a new generation of devices exploiting the intrinsic MIT of these systems.

Abstract:
Nanocrystalline praseodymium oxide films have been successfully generated on stainless steel substrates. The electrochemical deposition was performed in the cathode compartment of a divided electrochemical cell with a regular three-electrode configuration. The green films obtained by electrodeposition were then annealed at high temperatures for 1-3 hours. X-ray diffraction revealed the fluorite structure of Pr6O11 and the crystallite size was calculated. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was employed to study the composition of the oxide films and also the oxidation state of Pr. Scanning electron microscopy was utilized to study the surface texture and microstructure of deposits. Fourier transform infrared spectrometery was used to investigate the composition of the films. The effects of different conditions on the green films were also studied such as different pH values of the electrolyte solution, different deposition modes, different supporting electrolytes and different applied current densities. Sintering experiments were conducted to investigate the properties of the green films. Praseodymium oxide powders were also successfully prepared by combining electrochemical methods with sintering processes. The praseodymium oxide powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The crystallite sizes of the powders were evaluated.

Electrochemical and non-enzymatic fructose detection has evoked keen interest in the scientific literature. Several authors have reported on different methods of electrode preparation for fructose sensors. However, little systematic study has been conducted to design a cheap, efficient method of depositing metal oxides to detect fructose. To address the challenge, a Co3O4 thin film was fabricated using a simple solution step deposition on Fluorine doped Tin oxide (FTO) glass electrode. In this study, a report on the selective oxidation of fructose on Co3O4 thin film electrode surface is presented. Electrode characterization was done using X-ray diffraction (XRD), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Atomic Fluorescence Microscopy (AFM), and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). All cyclic voltammetry (CVs) and chronoamperometry tests were carried out by the use of an AUTOLAB POTENTIOSTAT 302 N, controlled by Nova 2.0 software instrumentation using a customized 50 cm3 electrochemical cell. The cell consisted of a graphite rod as the counter electrode (CE), 3 M Ag/AgCl reference electrode (RE) and the fabricated Co3O4/FTO as the working electrode (WE). All experiments were carried out at 25±2 ⁰C. From the results, the constructed sensor exhibited two distinctive linear ranges in the ranges of 0.021 – 1.74 mM and from 1.74 - ~15 mM, covering a wide linear range of up to ~15 mM at an applied potential of +0.6V vs. Ag/AgCl in 0.1M NaOH solution. The sensor demonstrated a high, reproducible and repeatable sensitivity of 495 (lower concentration range) & 53 (higher concentration range) μA cm-2 mM-1 for a low R.S.D of 5 %. The Co3O4 thin film produced a low detection limit of ~1.7 μM for a signal to noise ratio of 3 (S/N = 3); a fast response time of 6s and long term stability. The repeatability and stability of the electrode resulted from the chemical stability of Co3O4 thin film. The study showed that the sensor was highly selective towards fructose compared to the presence of other key interferences i.e. AA, AC, and UA. Because of such a favourable electrocatalysis of the Co3O4 sensor towards fructose, the ease of the electrode fabrication and reproducibility makes it a future candidate for commercial applications in the food and beverages sector.
