Sarwer, David B., and Canice E. Crerand. Evaluation of Body Dysmorphic Disorder in Patients Seeking Cosmetic Surgery and Minimally Invasive Treatments. Edited by Katharine A. Phillips. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190254131.003.0031.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter details the recommended elements of the mental health assessment of individuals seeking cosmetic surgery or minimally invasive cosmetic treatments. Recommendations are provided for both mental health clinicians and aesthetic medical providers (e.g., surgeons, dermatologists). The standard elements of a comprehensive, initial mental health evaluation provide the foundation for assessment. In addition to assessing patients’ current psychosocial functioning and mental health history, providers should more specifically evaluate patients’ body image concerns. This includes a detailed assessment of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) symptoms. Mental health providers, as well as clinicians from whom cosmetic procedures are being requested, should also assess patients’ motivations and expectations for cosmetic treatment. These and other more specific areas of assessment will allow the consulting mental health professional to provide a comprehensive report to the medical professional providing the cosmetic treatment. It will also help surgeons, dermatologists, and other providers of cosmetic treatment to determine whether cosmetic treatment is appropriate for individuals with minimal appearance flaws who request cosmetic procedures.

Westerhoff, Jan. Buddhism without Reincarnation? Examining the Prospects of a “Naturalized” Buddhism. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190499778.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay investigates the feasibility of naturalized Buddhism—in particular a form of Buddhism that rejects reincarnation—by examining the suicide argument. This argument suggests that for the naturalized Buddhist, the result of the Buddhist path, namely escape from the cycle of reincarnation, can be obtained by simply killing oneself, as for the naturalized Buddhist there is not mental continuity after death. The essay examines a variety of ways in which the naturalized Buddhist can respond to the suicide argument and concludes that they are all wanting. It follows that the endeavor of naturalizing Buddhism as it is frequently understood today is fundamentally flawed.

Potter, Nancy Nyquist. Bad and good defiance: Practical reasoning as guide. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199663866.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter argues that, in order to distinguish between good and bad defiance, it is inadequate merely to rely on legal or clinical definitions of vice and disorder. Instead, a realistic account of some of the features of phronesis (practical reasoning) is needed. The question examined in this chapter is what qualities or characteristics would make defiant behavior wrong and why. The author claims that sometimes defiant behavior should be seen as virtuous. In order to show that this is not the case, the author begins with a discussion of the features of Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD). By examining what harms are relevant to vicious (bad) defiance and why antisocial behavior shows flawed reasoning, the author enriches her theory of defiance as a virtue, identifies constraints on what can count as virtuous defiance in a person with a mental disorder, and indicates what defiance as a virtue would look like by examining the case of Henry, a person diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Whitesmith, Martha. Cognitive Bias in Intelligence Analysis. Edinburgh University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474466349.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Belief, Bias and Intelligence outlines an approach for reducing the risk of cognitive biases impacting intelligence analysis that draws from experimental research in the social sciences. It critiques the reliance of Western intelligence agencies on the use of a method for intelligence analysis developed by the CIA in the 1990’s, the Analysis of Competing Hypotheses (ACH). The book shows that the theoretical basis of the ACH method is significantly flawed, and that there is no empirical basis for the use of ACH in mitigating cognitive biases. It puts ACH to the test in an experimental setting against two key cognitive biases with unique empirical research facilitated by UK’s Professional Heads of Intelligence Analysis unit at the Cabinet Office, includes meta-analysis into which analytical factors increase and reduce the risk of cognitive bias and recommends an alternative approach to risk mitigation for intelligence communities. Finally, it proposes alternative models for explaining the underlying causes of cognitive biases, challenging current leading theories in the social sciences.

Moeller, Gerard, and Mishka Terplan, eds. Substance Use Disorders. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190920197.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past few years there has been an increased interest in the identification and treatment of substance use disorders, due at least in part to the widespread drug overdose epidemic. Clinicians and the lay public have gained a greater understanding of the need for treatment of substance use disorders and the consequences of avoiding treatment. In addition, there has been a growing understanding of substance use disorders as medical or mental health disorders, rather than as character flaws or merely illegal activities. This book builds on this nascent understanding and presents epidemiology, basic science, and treatment from the perspective of a clinician who wants to gain the knowledge and background needed to work with this patient population. The overall theme of the book is to discuss evidence-based rather than anecdotal or unproved treatments. Section I begins with the epidemiology, etiology, and neurobiology of substance use disorders, including preclinical data. Section II discusses pharmacotherapy for substance use disorders, focusing on medications approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Section III focuses on other evidence-based treatments for substance use disorders, including behavioral therapies, and ends with potential future treatments.

Reber, Arthur S. The First Minds. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190854157.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The book presents a novel theory of the origins of mind and consciousness dubbed the Cellular Basis of Consciousness (CBC). It argues that sentience emerged with life itself. The most primitive unicellular species of bacteria are conscious, though it is a sentience of a primitive kind. They have minds, though they are tiny and limited in scope. There is nothing even close to this thesis in the current literature on consciousness. Hints that cells might be conscious can be found in the writings of a few cell biologists, but a fully developed theory has never been put forward before. Other approaches to the origins of consciousness are examined and shown to be seriously or fatally flawed, specifically ones based on: (a) the assumption that minds are computational and can be captured by an artificial intelligence (AI), (b) efforts to discover the neurocorrelates of mental experiences, the so-called Hard Problem, and (c) looking for consciousness in less complex species by identifying those that possess precursors of those neurocorrelates. Each of these approaches is shown to be either essentially impossible (the AI models) or so burdened by philosophical and empirical difficulties that they are effectively unworkable. The CBC approach is developed using standard models of evolutionary biology. The remarkable repertoire of single-celled species that micro- and cell-biologists have discovered is reviewed. Bacteria, for example, have sophisticated sensory and perceptual systems, learn, form memories, make decisions based on information about their environment relative to internal metabolic states, communicate with one another, and even show a primitive form of altruism. All such functions are indicators of sentience. Conversations with a caterpillar function as a literary vehicle Finally, the implications of the CBC model are discussed along with a number of related issues in evolutionary biology, philosophy of mind, the possibility of sentient plants, the ethical repercussions of universal animal sentience, and the long-range impact of adopting the CBC stance.
