Abstract:
Singleton Merten Syndrome is a rare disease characterized by the presence of the dental dysplasia phenotype, calcifications in the aorta, progressive wear and loss of bone protein (osteoporosis) in the hands and feet. Patients have muscle weakness, poor motor development, abnormal dentition, deformities of thefeet and hands, and skin lesions. Objective: This report describes the maxillomandibular rehabilitation of a patient with Singleton Merten Syndrome and an allergic reaction to the acrylic resin through maxillary overdenture and mandibular partial removable denture. Case report: Female patient, 18 years old, with clinical characteristics of Singleton Merten Syndrome and allergic reaction to acrylic resin, with complaints of loss of function and esthetics dueto the absence of several teeth, but with the presence of unerupted maxillary and mandibular tooth buds. Maxillary overdenture and mandibular removable partial denture were made of polyethylene. Conclusion: The rehabilitation treatment with maxillary overdenture and mandibular partial removable denture provided better facial muscle support, restoring masticatory function and facial esthetics. With this treatment, it was possible to reestablish patient’s satisfactionand self-esteem due to the correct construction of the prostheses, and minimize hypersensitivity reactions in the oral mucosa, which allowed the use of these prostheses by the patient without any complications.

Abstract:
Singleton Merten syndrome (SMS) is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder with variable expression. Its characteristic features include abnormal aortic calcification, abnormal ossification of extremities, and dental anomalies. We present a young man with dyspnea who was noted to have aortic stenosis in the background of glaucoma, psoriasis, dental anomalies, hand and foot deformities, Achilles tendinitis, osteopenia, and nephrolithiasis. The conglomeration of features led to the diagnosis of SMS. His mother had a very similar phenotype.

Abstract.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Melanoma differentiation-associated protein 5 (MDA5) is a crucial RIG-I-like receptor RNA helicase enzyme encoded by IFIH1 in humans. Single nucleotide polymorphisms in the IFIH1 results in fatal genetic disorders such as Aicardi–Goutières syndrome and Singleton–Merten syndrome, and in increased risk of type I diabetes in humans. In this study, we chose four different amino acid substitutions of the MDA5 protein responsible for genetic disorders: MDA5L372F, MDA5A452T, MDA5R779H, and MDA5R822Q and analyzed their structural and functional relationships using molecular dynamic simulations. Our results suggest that the mutated complexes are relatively more stable than the wild-type MDA5. The radius of gyration, interaction energies, and intra-hydrogen bond analysis indicated the stability of mutated complexes over the wild type, especially MDA5L372F and MDA5R822Q. The dominant motions exhibited by the wild-type and mutant complexes varied significantly. Moreover, the betweenness centrality of the wild-type and mutant complexes showed shared residues for intra-signal propagation. The observed results indicate that the mutations lead to a gain of function, as reported in previous studies, due to increased interaction energies and stability between RNA and MDA5 in mutated complexes. These findings are expected to deepen our understanding of MDA5 variants and may assist in the development of relevant therapeutics against the disorders.

Abstract:
Abstract In 1942, one year after the occupation of Greece by the German “Wehrmacht”, the “Reichswirtschaftsministerium” set up the DEGRIGES (Deutsch-Griechische Warenausgleichsgesellschaft / German-Greek organization for the exchange of goods) for the control of trade between Germany and Greece. The president was Otto Braun, owner of the Berlin-based „Transdanubia“, an Import- Export-Company. Braun organised in the 1920s in Bavaria illegal arms depots, and commanded „Feme“-murders. In Hungary he supported the fascists, and achieves the „aryanization“ of Jewish companies. The focus of the investigation is on the activities of the DEGRIGES in the network of competing organizations like the greek branch of NSDAP, the Sudosteuropa-Gesellschaft, the SACIG (the Italian counterpart of DEGRIGES), and the Mitteleuropaischer Wirtschaftstag (MWT) − and on the competition with Hermann Neubacher, „Sonderbeauftrager“ of the Foreign Office for Greece, and Max Merten, one of the organizers of the deportation of the greek Jews to Auschwitz. In summary, it can be stated that the DEGRIGES was from 1942 until 1944 (when it was liquidated during the withdrawal of the “Wehrmacht”) an „agency for the wellarranged exploitation of Greece“.

Abstract:
High-molecular-mass glycoconjugates are secreted by the continuous cell line MM-39, which has been obtained from cultured human tracheal gland cells transformed by simian virus 40. They were purified on Sepharose® CL-4B and then by two steps of density-gradient centrifugation. High-molecular-mass glycoproteins resistant to digestion by hyaluronidase, chondroitin ABC lyase and heparitinase were obtained, in addition to hyaluronic acid and proteoglycans. They were susceptible to β-elimination. They contained polylactosaminoglycan chains as well as carbohydrate chains with a terminal sialic acid in the NeuAc α2-3 sequence. Most of them have a buoyant density of 1.45 g/ml in CsCl-density-gradient centrifugation, except for MUC1. The MM-39 cells were also characterized by a high expression of MUC1 and MUC4 genes, but they did not express MUC2, MUC3, MUC5B and MUC5AC. Therefore the MM-39 cells synthesized mucin-like glycoproteins as well as lysozyme and mucous proteinase inhibitor [Merten, Kammouni, Renaud, Birg, Mattéi and Figarella (1996) Am. J. Respir. Cell. Mol. Biol. 15, 520–528]; they should be considered as having a mixed, both serous and mucous, phenotype.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Sobretudo, a delimitação dos grupos pluviométricos homogêneos permitiu compreender a relação entre o relevo, as alturas pluviométricas e o potencial erosivo das chuvas.</p><p><strong>Palavras-chave</strong>: agrupamento, pluviosidade, potencial erosivo, bacia hidrográfica.</p><p> </p><p>Abstract</p><p>This paper aims to define homogeneous rainfall regions and to investigate the relationship between rainfall and the potential erosivity for Pirapó, Paranapanema III and IV hydrographic unit - Paraná. The rainfall data was collected from thirty five rain gauges at Paraná Water Institute and from five weather stations at Paraná Agronomy Institute (IAPAR), National Weather Institute (INMET) and Paraná Meteorological System (SIMEPAR) and were processed within the temporal segmentation 1976 to 2012. The erosivity index rain used was calculated from the equation presented by Rufino, Biscaia and Merten (1993) for the Paraná State. It was defined that the most appropriate clustering method is the agglomerative method of Ward, with the proximity measure the Euclidean distance. The study area presents a spatial variation of rainfall that shows the orography influence mainly to the spatial distribution in the annual scale, while the location of groups shows a greater association with the atmospheric dynamics, as referred in the literature, for understanding the monthly distribution of rainfall. Above all, the delimitation of homogeneous rainfall groups allowed to understand the relationship between relief, the rain heights and the erosive potential of rainfall.</p><p><strong>Keywords</strong>: clustering, rainfall, erosive potential, watershed.</p>

Abstract:
Notou-se que os resultados para a escala sazonal estiveram alinhados aos já obtidos e ao comportamento habitual da dinâmica atmosférica regional.ABSTRACTResearch concerning rainfall spatio-temporal behavior provides help to the planning of many sectors, while the knowledge of rainfall erosivity allows identifying areas and periods in which soil conservation measures are a priority. Based on this, this paper aims to evaluate the rainfall variability and the erosivity in Pirapó, Paranapanema III and IV hydrographic unit, which is located at the so-called Third Plateau of Paraná, between the 22º30’S and 23º30’S parallels and the 51º00’W and 53º00’W meridians. The rainfall data were obtained from thirty five rain gauges at Paraná Water Institute and from five weather stations at Paraná Agronomy Institute (IAPAR), National Weather Institute (INMET) and Paraná Meteorological System (SIMEPAR), in the period of 1976 to 2012, to the annual and seasonal time scales. The methodology by Rufino, Biscaia and Merten (1993) was applied to determine the rainfall erosivity index. It was possible to verify that the most elevated sector of the hydrographic unit showed the greatest heights of rainfall, the biggest amount of rainy days and the greatest erosion potential. On the other hand, the sectors with the lowest altimetric quotas had the lowest results regarding rainfall, amount of rainy days and erosity. It was noticed that the results to the seasonal time scales were aligned to that had been verified and to the usual behavior of the regional atmospheric dynamics.

Abstract:
Deciding between alternatives is a critical element of flexible behavior. Perceptual decisions have been studied extensively in an action-based framework. Recently, we have shown that abstract perceptual decisions are encoded in prefrontal cortex (PFC) neurons ( Merten and Nieder 2012 ). However, the role of other frontal cortex areas remained elusive. Here, we trained monkeys to perform a rule-based visual detection task that disentangled abstract perceptual decisions from motor preparation. We recorded the single-neuron activity in the presupplementary (preSMA) and the rostral part of the cingulate motor area (CMAr) and compared it to the results previously found in the PFC. Neurons in both areas traditionally identified with motor planning process the abstract decision independently of any motor preparatory activity by similar mechanisms as the PFC. A larger proportion of decision neurons and a higher strength of decision encoding was found in the preSMA than in the PFC. Neurons in both areas reliably predicted the monkeys' decisions. The fraction of CMAr decision neurons and their strength of the decision encoding were comparable to the PFC. Our findings highlight the role of both preSMA and CMAr in abstract cognitive processing and emphasize that both frontal areas encode decisions prior to the preparation of a motor output.
