Abstract:
Singleton Merten Syndrome is a rare disease characterized by the presence of the dental dysplasia phenotype, calcifications in the aorta, progressive wear and loss of bone protein (osteoporosis) in the hands and feet. Patients have muscle weakness, poor motor development, abnormal dentition, deformities of thefeet and hands, and skin lesions. Objective: This report describes the maxillomandibular rehabilitation of a patient with Singleton Merten Syndrome and an allergic reaction to the acrylic resin through maxillary overdenture and mandibular partial removable denture. Case report: Female patient, 18 years old, with clinical characteristics of Singleton Merten Syndrome and allergic reaction to acrylic resin, with complaints of loss of function and esthetics dueto the absence of several teeth, but with the presence of unerupted maxillary and mandibular tooth buds. Maxillary overdenture and mandibular removable partial denture were made of polyethylene. Conclusion: The rehabilitation treatment with maxillary overdenture and mandibular partial removable denture provided better facial muscle support, restoring masticatory function and facial esthetics. With this treatment, it was possible to reestablish patient’s satisfactionand self-esteem due to the correct construction of the prostheses, and minimize hypersensitivity reactions in the oral mucosa, which allowed the use of these prostheses by the patient without any complications.

Heinonen, H. (Heidi). "Liikenteen losserokaloja ja trooppisten merten princejä:huumori tieteen yleistajuistajana Niko Kettusen Viikon eläin -palstalla." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2017. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201706012356.

Full text
Abstract:
Pro gradu -työni aihe on huumori tieteen yleistajuistajana. Metaforan teoriaa ammennan erityisesti Iina Hellstenin vuonna 2002 ilmestyneestä väitöskirjasta The Politics of Metaphor, jossa Hellsten tarkastelee metaforan mahdollisuuksia tieteen ja journalismin kohtauspaikkana. Huumoritutkimuksesta hyödynnän Janne Zareffin vuonna 2012 ilmestynyttä väitöskirjaa Journalistinen komiikka, jossa Zareff tutkii, millaisia ehtoja inkongruentin komiikan on täytettävä, jotta se olisi journalistista.

Full text
Abstract:
Nucleate boiling is one of the most efficient modes of heat transfer. At the start of nucleate boiling, isolated bubbles appear on the heating surface, the regime known as partial nucleate boiling. Transition from isolated bubbles to fully developed nucleate boiling occurs with increase in wall superheat, when bubbles begin to merge in vertical and lateral directions. The laterally merged bubbles form vapor mushrooms, which stay attached to the heater surface via numerous vapor stems. The present study is performed to numerically analyze the bubble dynamics and heat transfer associated with lateral bubble merger during transition from partial to fully developed nucleate boiling. The complete Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensions along with the continuity and energy equations are solved using the SIMPLE method. The liquid vapor interface is captured using the Level-Set technique. Calculations are carried out for multiple bubble-merger in a line and also in a plane and the bubble dynamics and wall heat transfer are compared to that for a single bubble. The results show that the merger process significantly increases the overall wall heat transfer. It is also found that the orientation of the bubbles strongly influences different heat transfer mechanisms.

Abstract:
We propose a novel method to merge convolutional neural-nets for the inference stage. Given two well-trained networks that may have different architectures that handle different tasks, our method aligns the layers of the original networks and merges them into a unified model by sharing the representative codes of weights. The shared weights are further re-trained to fine-tune the performance of the merged model. The proposed method effectively produces a compact model that may run original tasks simultaneously on resource-limited devices. As it preserves the general architectures and leverages the co-used weights of well-trained networks, a substantial training overhead can be reduced to shorten the system development time. Experimental results demonstrate a satisfactory performance and validate the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract:
Abstract A general purpose multibody dynamics algorithm is written and merged into AutoCAD. This merger creates a user friendly environment for the simulation of multibody mechanical systems such as robot manipulators. Users can prepare input data of the dynamic code easily after creating an AutoCAD drawing of the multibody system. After the dynamic analysis is complete, the results can be easily used to produce animation slides in AutoCAD. The multibody dynamics algorithm uses a recursive variational formulation. This formulation has been proven to be computationally more efficient.

Full text
Abstract:
Distributed primal-dual optimization has received many focuses in the past few years. In this framework, training samples are stored in multiple machines. At each round, all the machines conduct a sequence of updates based on their local data, and then the local updates are synchronized and merged to obtain the update to the global model. All the previous approaches merge the local updates by averaging all of them with a uniform weight. However, in many real world applications data are not uniformly distributed on each machine, so the uniform weight is inadequate to capture the heterogeneity of local updates. To resolve this issue, we propose a better way to merge local updates in the primal-dual optimization framework. Instead of using a single weight for all the local updates, we develop a computational efficient algorithm to automatically choose the optimal weights for each machine. Furthermore, we propose an efficient way to estimate the duality gap of the merged update by exploiting the structure of the objective function, and this leads to an efficient line search algorithm based on the reduction of duality gap. Combining these two ideas, our algorithm is much faster and more scalable than existing methods on real world problems.

Abstract:
AEDC has developed a model-based analysis tool that merges real time processed dynamic engine vibration data with finite element models (FEM) and pretest analysis results. The tool, called the Structural Dynamics Response Analysis Capability, or SDRAC, performs this merge, displays the analysis results via an interactive graphical user interface (GUI) and presents an assessment of structural capability in real time. The tool also features a model modification routine to insure that the mathematical simulation adequately reflects results from the test. The adequacy of the simulation is displayed via error measures.
