Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Harry T. Burleigh's mentoring of younger musicians, especially singers and composers. Among the singers Burleigh mentored are some of the most distinguished African American recital and musical theater performers of the early to mid-twentieth century. In 1934 a black newspaper commented that Burleigh “was always ready to show a helping hand by way of advice to some struggling artist” such as Abbie Mitchell. Burleigh's support and encouragement of younger musicians enabled their careers in very practical ways. He also collaborated with instrumentalists, and although his standards of excellence were high, he was generous in his support of musicians whose talent and professionalism he respected. Aside from Mitchell, Burleigh's early protégés include black singers Roland Hayes, Marian Anderson, and Paul Robeson as well as women composers such as Undine Smith Moore, Florence Price, and Margaret Bonds.

Abstract:
To appreciate the reality of London’s rise, this discussion will focus upon the influence of many other individuals in shaping and reinforcing his beliefs and commitment to artistry. What one discovers is a man curious for knowledge, open to the ideas of people of varying life conditions. In addition, the “cradling,” the support and encouragement of women is evident from childhood onward. Though this theme can apply to his endeavors in ranching and in socialist activity, here the focus is specifically on his writing career, its emergence, and influential people. What emerges is a man who had many mentors, but who mentored in return and assisted the creativity of his friends.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on three mentors who gave their blessings to Ray Bradbury in his quest to become a major market writer: Leigh Brackett, her future husband Edmond Hamilton, and Henry Kuttner. Between the fall of 1944 and the summer of 1945, Bradbury earned quiet recognition of a most personal kind—one by one, his mentors told him that he was now a seasoned professional, one who deserved to have his stories published in leading magazines. This chapter considers the ways that Brackett, Hamilton, and Kuttner showed their support for Bradbury as he embarked on being a professional writer. In particular, it discusses Bradbury's completion of the final half of a novella Brackett had under contract for Planet Stories, which turned out into “Lorelei of the Red Mist.” It also examines how Kuttner's opinion of Bradbury's story “From Now On” set off the latter on his own.
