Abstract:
Mental retardation, also termed as learning impairment or cognitive dysfunction, is a serious manifestation of nervous system. The defining features of mental retardation are low or subaverage intellectual functioning (Intelligence quotient<70), impairment in at least two of the adaptive skills (e.g communication ability, self care, self guidance, reading, writing ability, etc) before 18 year of age1. Molecular cytogenetics is the study of genetic disorders using advanced technologies combined with cytogenetic and molecular methodologies2. Molecular diagnosis has equal importance as clinical diagnosis in mental retardation and day by day new advancement in these methodologies are being introduced by molecular cytogeneticists. The promising achievement of molecular cytogenetic techniques is the genetic counseling of high risk pregnancies. The current mini-survey of literature discusses an overview of these techniques employed to investigate deletion, duplication, inversion and translocation of chromosomes associated with mental retardation.

Abstract:
Rapid and significant changes in appropriate evaluation and care of infants and young children with mental retardation and other disabilities are substantively influencing the pediatrician's role. Pediatricians trained in models of development that emphasized biologic influences are now understanding the powerful influence of environmental forces on infant development and are beginning to recognize the landmarks of infant temperamental, emotional, and mental health development. Changes in the traditional American family and the resources available to the family are also exerting major influences on the developmental outcome of infants and children with and without disabilities. Pediatricians are becoming more aware of the value of joining in active interdisciplinary partnerships with parents and well-trained professionals as they evaluate, provide health care, and participate with others in coordinating services for infants with mental retardation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Mental illness and mental retardation are completely two different terms and with two different concepts in them and cannot be used interchangeably. Mental illness can be caused by number of causes like genetic causes, environmental causes and chemical imbalances in the brain. While mental retardation in the imbalance in normal development of the brain in an individual by which it can be categorized into mild Estimates of the prevalence of comorbidity of psychiatric disorders and mental retardation in community and clinical populations range from 14.3 to 67.3 percent. Mental illness can be described when behaviour of individuals is inappropriate, irrational, or unrealistic in most physical, or in mental illness the person’s behaviour is not normal. Mental disorder can be caused by physical, psychological or environmental factors, or a com- bination of all three. While mental illness is not level of intelligence, it is possible for a person to be both mentally ill and retarded.
