Abstract:
Contemporary feminist movements are mixed gendered but men’s participation in them remain low. Many sociological studies have neglected to study men’s role and participation in feminist movements and focused mainly on women’s position.  This thesis builds on social movement theories and previous research conducted within this field.  This study aims to reveal factors that motivate men’s participation and roles played by them in contemporary feminist movements. Qualitative interviews are used for data collection. The data indicate that men’s role in feminist movements is designated to support the movements. Factors that motivated them to participate in the movements include; rational, network and political motivations.

Abstract:
Eye tracking research is a growing area and the fields as where eye trackingcould be used in research are large. To understand the eye tracking data dif-ferent filters are used to classify the measured eye movements. To get accu-rate classification this thesis has investigated the possibility to measure bothhead movements and eye movements in order to improve the estimated gazepoint. The thesis investigates the difference in using head movement compensationwith a velocity based filter, I-VT filter, to using the same filter without headmovement compensation. Further on different velocity thresholds are testedto find where the performance of the filter is the best. The study is made with amobile eye tracker, where this problem exist since you have no absolute frameof reference as opposed to when using remote eye trackers. The head move-ment compensation shows promising results with higher precision overall.

Abstract:
in the everyday clinical practice. Having this in mind, the choice of a simple setup would not be enough because, even if the setup is quick and simple, the instrumental assessment would still be in addition to the daily routine. The will to overcome this limit has led to the idea of instrumenting already existing and widely used functional tests. In this way the sensor based assessment becomes an integral part of the clinical assessment. Reliable and validated signal processing methods have been successfully implemented in Personal Health Systems based on smartphone technology. At the end of this research project there is evidence that such solution can really and easily used in clinical practice in both supervised and unsupervised settings. Smartphone based solution, together or in place of dedicated wearable sensing units, can truly become a pervasive and low-cost means for providing suitable testing solutions for quantitative movement analysis with a clear clinical value, ultimately providing enhanced balance and mobility support to an aging population.

Abstract:
Application of eye movement measurement is especially significant in Neuroscience. Results from eye tracking can give valuable insight into the correlation between neural activity and eye movements. Abnormalities in the eye movements also provide information regarding diagnosis and progress of neurological diseases such as dementia. Another application is in developing human-computer interfaces as a means of communication for the severely handicapped. Although there are numerous eye tracking techniques available, the magnetic search coil method has been prominently used by researchers due to its high accuracy and precision. This technique typically requires the subjects head to be fixed for accurate measurements due to the use of large field coils. Here we propose a miniaturized coil system using MEMS technology for application in eye movement measurement. The coils were designed and modeled using CoventorWare and MagNet software. The microcoils were then fabricated in the McGill Nanotools microfabrication laboratory. We present the results for using the materials Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) and Aluminium for the fabrication of coils. We found that the resulting coil system is capable of identifying displacements along the X, Y and Z axis. The resolution of the system depends on the configuration of the system, it was calculated to be around 20-40 μm on the plane of the coil and it increases near the centre of the coil. Although the proposed coil system holds significant potential, but further exhaustive testing needs to be performed in an environment simulating eye movements.

Abstract:
Patente de tipo Aplicación (US20180245954A1). 30 de Agosto de 2018.
The invention relates to an instrument for measuring air speed by means of parabolic movement and to a measuring method, wherein the measuring instrument is formed by a cubic structure (1) that holds a screwable, flexible container (2) which releases—where air speed needs to be measured—a drop of liquid, the drop falling on one of the concentric circles located on an interchangeable plate (3) that is positioned on a flat base (4) of the device and perpendicular to the axial end of the outlet for the drop of liquid. Depending—on the height—the movement with which the drop falls, the air speed can be determined by means of the horizontal range of the parabolic movement followed by the drop of liquid, and evaluated using the distance be ween the point of impact of the drop on the surface with respect to the center. The direction of the air speed can also be determined from angle formed by the projection of the vertical plane above which projection the air moves in relation to the x-axis of the x-y plane located above the interchangeable plate (3).

Abstract:
We can say, that for a very long time, philosophy was bad-minded in regard to cinema. Philosophers and artists had doubts about cinema‘s subordination to art, because, in their opinion, cinema doesn‘t have his own, unique language, and film directors were in anger, because philosophers, in their interpretations of certain films, tried to enforce their own theories to cinema, by taking away its unique being. The aim of this work - to look into cinematic art from philosophical perspective, more precise, what assumptions of cinema interpretation can offer philosophy. Discussing concepts like – time, duration, cinematic mechanism, image, image-movement, image-time, snapshot, montage – we move from philosophical discipline to cinematic art, by trying to prove, that cinema has something common with philosophical theories. Images composed by cinema, can become illustrations of philosophical concepts.

Abstract:
English men's community rugby boasts the largest adult rugby playing population in the world. While regular participation in rugby has been linked to clinical health benefits there is an inherent risk of injury associated with rugby participation due to its collision based nature. This programme of research was conducted to identify means to reduce the injury risk in the context of men's community rugby. In Chapter 3, the Functional Movement Screen is used to assess the movement competency of men's community rugby players. Injury match exposure data was recorded for each player, and analysed to determine associations between players' movement competency and injury outcomes. Players that displayed both of pain and asymmetry on screening were associated with an incidence of overall injury at 22.0 injuries/1000 player match-hours. Players that scored 16 or more had an incidence of overall injury at 12.4 injuries/1000 player match-hours. Chapter 4 details the multi-stage process used to develop the injury prevention exercise programme specific to men's community rugby. Chapter 5 investigated barriers and facilitators to programme implementation in a sample of men's community rugby clubs. Results informed the refinement of the intervention exercise programme and detailed means to maximise successful delivery of the programme to clubs. Chapter 6 was a cluster randomised controlled trial of the final injury prevention exercise programme. Clear beneficial effects following implementation included a 40% reduction in targeted lower-limb injury and a 60% reduction in concussion compared to the control group. The injury burden for intervention clubs with higher compliance was reduced 50% compared to intervention clubs with lower compliance. Functional Movement Screening™ may identify men's community rugby players at higher risk of match injury. A targeted movement control exercise programme can provide efficacious means to reduce injury that is practicable within the men's community rugby environment.

Abstract:
This study maps out and explores the reactions to and strategies of men working against men's violence against women and LGBTI people. It is based on interviews with men in gender-based violence prevention in South Africa and builds on previous research on women's organising and men's roles in feminism. It provides an analysis of dilemmas and challenges that they face and the strategies that they have developed, navigating in a feminist field and as men practising what could be seen as a challenge to the power and privileges of the social category of men. Using feminist theory and the theoretical concept “hegemony of men”, I critically interpret the potential for men to undermine men's privilege, arguing that efforts to create new masculinities reinforce the gender order and that the gendered context leaves little room for men's counter-hegemonic practices. I argue, finally, that a feminist emancipatory project is better developed by seeking identifications beyond the social category of men than within a framework of reforming masculinity.

Abstract:
Magister Artium (Psychology) - MA(Psych)
This study aimed to investigate how male university students become involved in activism to end sexual violence against women. Historically, gender-based violence (GBV) prevention efforts have been a women's issue and men have not typically been part of this violence prevention picture. However, in the past two decades there have been increasing efforts to involve men. This has been motivated by growing recognition that, "while most men do not use violence against women, when violence does occur it is perpetrated largely by men and the ideas and behaviours linked to masculinity are highly influential in men's use of violence against women" (Flood 2011, p. 361). This project focuses on the Silent Protest, a campaign against sexual violence initiated in 2006 at Rhodes University. Since its inception the Silent Protest exclusively recruited women but, in 2011, men were actively invited and encouraged to participate as allies in activism to end sexual violence. This study aims to investigate the pathways through which male university students come to be involved in the Silent Protest and the meanings they derive from participation in protest activities. Men who participated in the Silent Protest were interviewed and the transcripts were analysed from an interpretative phenomenological framework. It was found that participation was motivated by an awareness of rape as a significant societal problem, a desire to make a difference, wanting emotional closure and as a result of the influence of family and friends. Participation resulted in both negative and positive experiences for male students. Positive experiences included a sense of accomplishment and pride and a sense of solidarity whilst negative experiences were feelings of helplessness, guilt and shock, feeling drained, and feeling grouped with rapists. Enhancing knowledge in this area can serve a critical role in informing outreach efforts on how best to engage and involve men in working towards ending sexual violence against women.

Full text
Abstract:
This research and thesis is a response to a particular usage of the Wild Man concept, an archetype with a long history in western and many other societies. In recent times, writers of the mythopoetic/therapeutic wing of the Men's Movement have advanced gender politicised notions of the Wild Man, assigning a role for him as a key to many of the problems men face. This new role intrigued me but their depiction of the Wild Man irritated because I too had a strong belief in him but felt he was being misrepresented. The objective of this thesis is to arrive at my own considered view of the Wild Man through assessment of the relevant data. The primary focus is on recent Men's Movement writing, both those championing the wild Man such as Bly, Keen and Biddulph, and their critics, who deny his existence. Feminist views are also an important area of investigation. The scope of investigation must include historical perspective of the Wild Man and evidence from the physical sciences, anthropology, zoology, psychology, philosophy, literature and sociology. I also examine the connections with my own field, visual arts linked with the Wild Man. During the conduct of the research, the author experimented with some of the methods for 'contacting the Wild Man' such as meditation and bushwalking. The written research was part of a cycle of investigation including the production of drawings and sculptures/installation, with each area nourishing and stimulating others. My assessment discusses and makes suggestions for: the Wild Man as a way for men to refashion themselves; men's 'contact' with the Wild Man; what the Wild Man has to offer; an exploration of the nature of the Wild Man; and his relevance to art. Further work is required in bringing men of differing views together to discuss and research means for positive change in men.

Samà, Monsonís Albert. "Human movement analysis by means of accelerometers : aplication to human gait and motor symptoms of Parkinson's Disease." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/134770.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents the original contributions of the author on the field of human movement analysis from signals captured by accelerometers. These sensors are capable of converting acceleration from some body parts into electric signals for further analysis. The progressive refinement and miniaturization of accelerometers has allowed the development of minimally invasive devices that can be used to ambulatory monitor human movements during daily live activities. The study's contributions mainly fall under two heads: first, the analysis of movement in Parkinson's disease (PD); and, second, the relationship between accelerometer signals and characteristics of gait. To this end, new methods for obtaining speed and length of strides and, also, for identifying people have been developed. In all these studies, a single sensor fixed to the patient's waist has been used. PD is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by movement alterations. The main motor symptoms of PD are 1) tremor, 2) bradykinesia or slowness of movements, 3) freezing of gait and 4) dyskinesia or abnormal involuntary movements. The first three symptoms primarily occur when the medication has not yet reached an effective therapeutic effect. These periods are commonly known as OFF periods or OFF motor state. On the other hand, periods when the patient is suitably responding to the medication are known as ON periods or ON motor state. Dyskinesias mainly appear when the medication blood level is excessive. Both dyskinesias and OFF motor states are caused by a defect in the medication administration. In this sense, a wearable device capable of detecting and recording dyskinesias and OFF periods represents an important tool that enables clinics to more accurately prescribe the medication regimen of a patient. The work done in the field of PD consisted in developing algorithms able to detect dyskinesias and both ON and OFF periods. These algorithms have been adapted to provide real-time detection, which enabled their employment in a pilot study. This clinical study has tested, for the first time, the automatic adjustment of medication performed by means of a subcutaneous infusion pump according to the dyskinesias appearance and motor state of PD patients. The experience gained in the treatment of accelerometric signals from PD has led to contribute in the field of gait analysis. First, new methods for obtaining speed and length of strides from a single sensor fixed to the patient's waist have been obtained. Not only the PD can benefit from this study, but other diseases such as diabetes or some orthopedotraumatological diseases can also benefit from its results. Finally, using some of the techniques of the previous studies, another important contribution has been made in the field of biometric person identification. The work presented shows how the signal obtained from a single accelerometer located at the waist not only enables the extraction of some gait characteristics but also permits the identification of a person through its gait pattern. The main theoretical contribution of this thesis has been the development of techniques based on the reconstruction of attractors. It has been shown that the usage of only a small number of features that characterize the reconstructed attractor obtained from a time series of acceleration measurements makes possible the extraction of important parameters of gait and the person identification.

Dendrinos, Panayis. "Contemporary Greek male homosexualities : Greek gay men's experiences of the family, the military and the LGBT movement." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2008. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/2653/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides an ethnographic analysis of how Greek gay men experience the ways in which their sexuality is subject to ‘negotiation’ in the family and the military, how these ‘negotiations’ influence and sometimes even inhibit the creation of an LGBT movement. The experiences of my ethnographic informants produced little material for generalisations but the diversity of their voices suggests that they are constantly fighting between the desire to belong and the wish to remain different. I argue that the theoretical framework of timi and dropi (honour and shame) can still be a valuable explanatory tool for an understanding of Modern Greek homosexualities. Yet, this thesis offers a critique of this paradigm for its neglect to account for the possible ways in which the sexual contact of the men in a family may occasionally be seen as a threat to the family’s honour. As a result, silence becomes a defence mechanism that many of my gay interlocutors and their families employ to deal with homosexuality. This varied silence often inhibits the sense of pride in the man’s homosexuality and in turn prevents him from joining the movement that would require him to be vocal about his sexual self. The military experiences of my interlocutors, on the other hand, challenge the assumption that the military is a strictly heterosexual space. What they often describe as the ‘homo-social’ environment of the military acted as a catalyst for several of them to come to terms with their homosexuality. The thesis also explores the history of Greek LGBT activism from its inception in 1976 to today and examines the reasons behind its limited success in capturing the hearts and minds of my interlocutors.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explains how the men's movements in New Zealand and the United States highlight the interaction between social structures and the individual in determining how masculinity is defined. Hegemonic structures, most notably patriarchy, provide a background of stable definitions of social reality for men. The men's movement in both countries has been slow to overtly challenge these social structures. Rather they have contested definitions of masculinity in the foreground of institutional structures which has resulted in a widespread lack of radical change to existing social structures and a perpetuation of unequal power relationships between men and women. Men's oppression is identified as an institutional arrangement that limits men's lives and perpetuates hegemonic structures that oppress others, most notably women.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to take the individual on a journey about what it is like to be engaged in radical anti-systemic activism in the 21st Century.  Along this journey the reader will learn about the experiences of what it was like to join the Occupy movement"an anti-systemic movement that began in 2011"through an empirical analysis of learning about and practicing the anarchist(ic) characteristics of the movement"horizontal, non-hegemonic, affinity and consensus-based ways-of-being as a part of your everyday lifeworld.  This journey is not only informed by my own personal experience joining the Occupy movement, but it is also informed by my simultaneous experience of maintaining the role of a radical activist-scholar throughout the process.  Accordingly, I will explore how this impacted my lifeworld both within and outside of academia, which informed the very framework, analysis, and outcomes produced in this thesis.  This project was thus also designed to inform social science research"particularly that on social movements"by reflecting on both social roles experienced in this journey in order to cohesively make sense of the paradoxes created by engaging in discourses about, within, and for the Occupy movement.  Of most importance, from an empirical and ontological experience as an Occupier and activist-scholar, this project will help to raise key questions about the frameworks to seek social justice utilized by contemporary anti-systemic social movements in the 21st Century"social movements that are now spreading around the globe.

Abstract:
The struggle to end violence against women and girls has long been a priority topic for women’s and feminist movements in Latin America. Lately, since the changes in the new media landscape (Castells 2015; Lievrouw, 2013) with the increased use of information and communication technologies (ICTs), such as social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, the way women and feminist movements advocate their intentions are changing (Harcourt, 2013; Mathos, 2017). Departing from this reality, the aim is to investigate the role the use of social media activism played for the recent feminist movement, Ni Una Menos (NUM [Not One Less]), in Argentina and Chile while advocating for the end of violence against women. Taking a cross disciplinary approach this research combines theories from the fields of feminist studies, social movement and communication sciences. Through in-depth interviews with core activists from NUM both in Argentina and Chile as research method, it has been possible to identify the role of certain social media platforms for NUM’s tactical repertoire in their strive to advocate for the end of violence against women and girls. The findings also demonstrate the activism on social media platforms by the NUM movement has played an important role to set the topic on the public agenda in these countries, resulting in a generally greater awareness. Regardless off the role social media activism played, the importance seems to lie in a combination of activism on social media and the streets for feminist movements advocating to end violence against women because it assures a broad reach to all people in society. Nevertheless, to end violence against women in these countries much more effort is needed by society at large.

Abstract:
With the MF20 as the major Case Study , I argue against the claims of the newness, uniqueness, success and failure or finality of these Arab movements. I revisit the first decade of the 21st century and the declaration of War on Terrorism (2003) as one trigger of sociopolitical conflicts that were already entrenched in the MENA region. What we witnessed in the second decade of this century is that the Arab uprisings only exposed transgressions in human rights and atrocities in the Middle East to the world. These uprisings were hurriedly reduced to seasonal uprisings. The third decade unfortunately looks to be in the hands of right-wing ideologues standing against multiculturalism and stressing the fear of religious extremism to change the focus from social issues and force the narrative of us-against-them on the forefront. For these reasons, I claim, there is no finality to the Arab uprisings, they have just begun and they are not in a state of thaw as Davis (2013) depicts them, but they are in slumbering phase recouping for a stronger come back. The close analysis in the project of the saga of struggles of these Arab movements with the Arab autocratic regimes who engineered nothing but preemptive reforms, requires our close attention for the remaining decades in this 21st century. Even the so-called successful cases, Tunisia and Morocco, indicate that what is celebrated is a state of temporary stability with major and alarming short comings in social change and social justice; two of the main reasons of the so called Arab Spring. Thomas Friedman suggests great historical details, in his great piece for the New York Times, calling for the expression “Arab Spring” be retired and be replaced by Anthony Cordesman’s the “Arab Decade” or “Arab Quarter Century” . I claim we are beyond that, and that we are witnessing an Arab Century in movement. If the recent political changes around the world are any indication, social change in the Arab world will be overlooked for at least another decade. The rise of the extreme right to power in the US and in Europe has already shifted the focus from the social injustices in the Arab world to the everlasting issue of Islam and extremism in the West. This is proving to be a big break for Arab autocratic regimes, who are using this rise of Islamophobia in the West as a unifying argument that distracts from the social injustices within their republics and kingdoms. Thus, the struggle of Arab citizens within the Arab states for social dignity will be overlooked until the revived narrative of the clash of Islam and the West dies down

Abstract:
The Human Immunodeficiency (HIV) epidemic in South Africa is disproportionately distributed by gender. Although women lead in the number of infections they are at an advantage when it comes to seeking and receiving care. Men's poor health seeking behaviour finds them seeking care late, testing at lower rates, defaulting from treatment and eventually having worse health outcomes. More men than women fail to enter and stay in the HIV cascade of care. The HIV cascade is a metaphor used to describe the steps that include HIV testing, initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART), adherence, viral suppression and good health outcomes. As health care providers (HCPs) are the ones who interact directly with men in the health system their view of the factors that hinder men's movement through the HIV cascade are valuable to better understanding how men interact with the care system. In this research semi-structured interviews were held with eleven HCPs working with HIV positive patients (6 women, 5 men) across 2 health facilities and 1 non-governmental organisation (NGO) within the Klipfontein sub-district. Health care workers were found to share some of the more commonly held notions regarding the barriers men face in HIV care. However, their experiences offer some challenging ideas and the health systems appears to be realising the need to tailor HIV services to the needs of men. The experiences and perspectives of HCPs should be further explored and the findings used to influence health policies and clinical practice.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the seven promises of the Promise Keepers movement using the rhetorical criticism method of fantasy theme analysis. In order to understand this movement, four research questions guided the study: ( 1) What common themes are embedded in the rhetoric of the Promise Keepers? (2) What is the rhetorical vision promoted by the Promise Keepers movement? (3) What makes the vision of the Promise Keepers movement so persuasive to so many Christian men in America? (4) Based on an examination of the rhetoric of the Promise Keepers movement, what can be ascertained about the motives of the movement?" In order to answer these questions, a rhetorical analysis was conducted on the primary literature of the movement. The analysis indicated that the Promise Keepers are trying to transform America into a Christian nation. The Promise Keepers believe that change can be brought about if men follow the movement's seven promises for Christian living. Through these promises, the movement emphasizes a patriarchal view of men in society. In addition, the analysis of the movement's rhetoric suggests that the Promise Keepers are not interested in political change, but moral change through the lives of individual men.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis is the result of an inquiry into the experiences of a group of people engaged in a Buddhist inspired creative meditation program, the main practice of which is the recognition and honouring of the spiritual dimensions, the divinity of self and others. The study employed a heuristic process of examining 'inner world' experiences. The inquiry was collaborative in the sense that its findings were not those of one person alone, but were a compilation of the results of interactions within the group. The inquiry was based on the hypothesis that creative meditation can facilitate changes in a person's perception of self and the external world. The principal aim was to explore into that possibility and investigate the group members' thoughts and feelings as to the main function, significance and eventual outcome of their practice. The investigation seemed to show that for the core group participants there were changes in self-understanding involving more self-acceptance. Changes in attitudes to relationships of various kinds also took place and these also seemed to involve the development of a greater degree of acceptance. With some participants the association of the practice with favourable co-incidence was an interesting but inexplicable feature. For some there was an identification of mind sets which seemed to have a bearing on the quality of meditation experience and its outcomes. The title of the study refers to the manner in which the meditations were often generated. A mandala, a symbolic picture, was designed by each participant and the features of this were imagined to move, sometimes dancing, through the meditations which followed. The second sub-title refers to an integral feature of the practice which was an attempt to arouse a sense of the wonderful as a quality of the people who were imagined to appear in the meditations.
