International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health 18, no. 9 (April 26, 2021): 4597. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/ijerph18094597.

Abstract:
Microcurrent electrical neuromuscular stimulation (MENS) is believed to alter blood flow, increasing cutaneous blood perfusion, with vasodilation and hyperemia. According to these physiological mechanisms, we investigated the short-term effects of MENS on constant-load exercise and the subsequent recovery process. Ten healthy subjects performed, on separate days, constant-load cycling, which was preceded and followed by active or inactive stimulation to the right quadricep. Blood lactate, pulmonary oxygen, and muscle deoxyhemoglobin on-transition kinetics were recorded. Hemodynamic parameters, heart rate variability, and baroreflex sensitivity were collected and used as a tool to investigate the recovery process. Microcurrent stimulation caused a faster deoxyhemoglobin (4.43 ± 0.5 vs. 5.80 ± 0.5 s) and a slower VO2 (25.19 ± 2.1 vs. 21.94 ± 1.3 s) on-kinetics during cycling, with higher lactate levels immediately after treatments executed before exercise (1.55 ± 0.1 vs. 1.40 ± 0.1 mmol/L) and after exercise (2.15 ± 0.1 vs. 1.79 ± 0.1 mmol/L). In conclusion, MENS applied before exercise produced an increase in oxygen extraction at muscle microvasculature. In contrast, MENS applied after exercise improved recovery, with the sympathovagal balance shifted toward a state of parasympathetic predominance. MENS also caused higher lactate values, which may be due to the magnitude of the muscular stress by both manual treatment and electrical stimulation than control condition in which the muscle received only a manual treatment.

Abstract:
Adhesive bonding of polymer matrix composites offers various advantages over traditional fasteners, such as a uniform stress state, reduced weight, and delay of composite delamination. However, adhesive bonding has limited implementation due to challenges in the prediction of durability. This work introduces a new method to monitor an adhesively bonded composite joint by dispersing magneto-electric nanoparticles (MENs) into the polymer precursor and monitoring changes in their surface charge density by evaluating the output magnetic signal under an applied magnetic field. Real-time monitoring of the curing process of a polymer adhesive was performed and corroborated via thermal analysis and mechanical testing. Lap shear and end notch flexure testing showed that adding 1 vol% MENs led to a ~23% increase in shear strength and a ~12% increase in mode II critical energy release rates compared to the undoped adhesive. Adding 5 vol% MENs also increased the adhesive’s peak tensile stress by ~8%. Strengthening mechanisms of the doped adhesive were monitored using in situ electron microscopy. A correlation between water ingression and a change in the magnetic moment was observed. Results show the MENs’ potential as a structural health-monitoring tool for a wide range of materials and applications.

Abstract:
Background: Prevalence of chemical-induced renal injuries has been on a fast rise over the years and has become the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the society, with environmental pollutants, heavy metals inclusive, seen as the causal agents. Recently, the role of medicinal foods in human health has gained considerable attention. Objective: We investigated the protective effects of methanolic extract of Nigella sativa (MENS) (Black seed) against cadmium-induced renal toxicity in albino rats. Methods: Twenty-five (25) male albino rats, weighing (150-170g), were randomly grouped into five groups: A-E. Group B (Negative Control) received intraperitoneal administration of cadmium chloride (CdCl2, 5mg/kg) only, group C received CdCl2 and low dose MENS (300mg/kg, oral), group D received CdCl2 and high dose MENS (600mg/kg, oral), group E (Positive control) received CdCl2 and Vitamin C (200mg/kg, oral), for 7 days. No treatment was administered to group A (Normal control). Renal injury was assessed by measuring serum levels of Na+, K+, creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) using standard methods. The kidneys were harvested for histopathological examination. Results: CdCl2 induced significant nephrotoxicity with marked elevation in the levels of biochemical markers of renal functions (p<0.05 or p<0.01); these were, however, ameliorated by a low dose of MENS. Histopathological examination of the kidney sections supported the biochemical findings. Conclusion: We conclude that Nigella sativa seed extract, at a low dose, is potentially nephroprotective against harmful chemical toxins such as cadmium.

Abstract:
Physical activity (PA) has been central in the life of our species for most of its history, and thus shaped our physiology during evolution. However, only recently the health consequences of a sedentary lifestyle, and of highly energetic diets, are becoming clear. It has been also acknowledged that lifestyle and diet can induce epigenetic modifications which modify chromatin structure and gene expression, thus causing even heritable metabolic outcomes. Many studies have shown that PA can reverse at least some of the unwanted effects of sedentary lifestyle, and can also contribute in delaying brain aging and degenerative pathologies such as Alzheimer’s Disease, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. Most importantly, PA improves cognitive processes and memory, has analgesic and antidepressant effects, and even induces a sense of wellbeing, giving strength to the ancient principle of “mens sana in corpore sano” (i.e., a sound mind in a sound body). In this review we will discuss the potential mechanisms underlying the effects of PA on brain health, focusing on hormones, neurotrophins, and neurotransmitters, the release of which is modulated by PA, as well as on the intra- and extra-cellular pathways that regulate the expression of some of the genes involved.

Abstract:
The status of physical activity in higher education has changed dramatically over the past 100 years. In this paper, we aim to (a) provide a brief history of physical activity on campus; (b) describe how that activity has changed from a requirement to an elective; (c) illustrate how mental health (particularly stress, anxiety, and depression) has changed in college students over the past few decades; and (d) describe the relationships between physical activity and mental health, particularly in college students. The paper culminates with recommendations for how colleges and universities might facilitate better student mental health through physical activity. There is room to improve the physical activity and mental health of college students, realigning higher education with the promotion of mens sana in corpore sano.

Abstract:
Does the Second Amendment protect those who threaten others by negligently or recklessly wielding firearms? What line separates constitutionally legitimate gun displays from threatening activities that can be legally proscribed? This article finds guidance in the First Amendment doctrine of true threats, which permits punishment of “statements where the speaker means to communicate a serious expression of an intent to commit an act of unlawful violence to a particular individual or group of individual.” The Second Amendment, like the First, should not be read to protect those who threaten unlawful violence. And to the degree that the constitution requires a culpable mental state (mens rea) in such circumstances, the appropriate standard should be recklessness.

Abstract:
The mental health of fathers is now receiving more attention as a part of a national policy designed to address mens' mental health. Fatherhood can be a challenging period in a man's life and some men are at risk of developing depression leading up to and following the birth of their child. It is estimated that, on average, 8% of new fathers are diagnosed with paternal postnatal depression. It has been reported that this condition is not well understood and that support for these fathers is limited. This paper examines literature on the emerging evidence for paternal postnatal depression, its prevalence, risk factors and how new fathers, who are susceptible to this condition, can be better supported in health care settings.

Abstract:
The 2-fold increase of pre-conscription youth and youth due to call-up morbidity is noted in Russian Federation during past decade. While recruiting of troops, for about 60% of the youth due to call-up were attributed to the 1-st group of health. More than 40% of the youth can not bear exercise which occurs during military labor. Index of unfitness to military service increased from 5.5 to 35% in the West Siberian regions. Armed forces are recruited with significant share of subjects having signs of protein - energetic insufficiency. All this necessitates studying condition of health and physical development of pre-conscription youth and youth due to call-up aimed at assessing causes of aggravated health and developing preventive measures in this category of mens population of the country.

Abstract:
SummaryBackground: In the summer of 2016 an international group of biomedical and health informatics faculty and graduate students gathered for the 16th meeting of the International Partnership in Health Informatics Education (IPHIE) masterclass at the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City, Utah. This international biomedical and health informatics workshop was created to share knowledge and explore issues in biomedical health informatics (BHI).Objective: The goal of this paper is to summarize the discussions of biomedical and health informatics graduate students who were asked to define interoperability, and make critical observations to gather insight on how to improve biomedical education. Methods: Students were assigned to one of four groups and asked to define interoperability and explore potential solutions to current problems of interoperability in health care. Results: We summarize here the student reports on the importance and possible solutions to the “interoperability problem” in biomedical informatics. Reports are provided from each of the four groups of highly qualified graduate students from leading BHI programs in the US, Europe and Asia. Conclusion: International workshops such as IPHIE provide a unique opportunity for graduate student learning and knowledge sharing. BHI faculty are encouraged to incorporate into their curriculum opportunities to exercise and strengthen student critical thinking to prepare our students for solving health informatics problems in the future.Citation: Turner AM, Facell JC, Jaspers M, Wetter T, Pfeifer D, Gatewood LC, Adam T, Li Y-C, Lin M-C, Evans RS, Beukenhorst A, van Mens H, Tensen E, Bock C, Fendrich L, Seitz P, Suleder J, Aldekhyyel R, Bridgeman K, Hu Z, Sattler A, Guo S-Y, Mohaimenul IMd, Ningrum DNA, Tung H-R, Bian J, Plasek JM, Rommel C, Burke J, Sohi H. Abstract:
Shalakya Tantra is an important branch in Ayurveda which deals with the diseases of the supraclavicular region. Eyecare is described under "Shalakya Tantra”. The eye is the most important and sensitive of five sense organs in the human body. Ayurveda also gives prime importance to the eye and primarily aim at the prevention of disease and promotion of positive health. Some of the faulty lifestyle exposures like sedentary habits, smoking, alcohol consumption, fat, sugar-rich diet, junk food, high carbohydrate food etc are notably associated with the risk of developing eye diseases. Association of eye diseases with Dinacharya, Ritucharya, Aahara-Vihara, Mind, Occu- pation, and Aging process are also important. Factors like continuous hours spent reading, watching TV, using mobile and working on computers take their toll on eye health. Ayurveda possesses vivid information about the lifestyle leading to healthy living and also the preventive strategies in general. For eye diseases, a few daily regi- mens like Aschyotana (eye drops), Anjana (Collyrium), Nasya (nasal application of drugs), Abhyanga (oil massage) are promoted as high-end measures for the maintenance of eye health, Various Netra vyayama (eye exercis- es), Yoga, Pranayama and Satkriya (Neti, Trataka etc) are also an effective therapy for healing of eye disorders. Abstract:
Background: In Ethiopia, specimens of presumptive drug resistant tuberculosis cases are transported by courier system from district sample collection centers to reference laboratories. It is essential to track the effectiveness of the referral system and identify challenges in order to take timely and appropriate actions. We assessed turnaround time and quality of speci- mens, and explored challenges of the specimen referral system in Amhara region, Ethiopia, 2017. Methods: With mixed methods, we retrospectively examined 385 randomly selected presumptive drug resistance TB speci- mens, and interviewed 53 purposively selected key informants from laboratories and post offices. We calculated median TAT and proportion of acceptable quality. We analyzed qualitative data thematically. Results: Of the 385 specimens, 94.5% (364/385) had acceptable quality at arrival in the reference laboratories. All the 364 specimens had result. Three - fourth (76.1%) of results were dispatched to the referring health facilities within the recom- mended turnaround time. Ineffective communication and lack of feedback among institutions were mentioned as challenges. Conclusion: The postal service was effective in keeping quality and majority of test results were timely delivered. Yet, there were operational challenges. Therefore, effective communication, using dedicated vehicle for specimen shipment and aware- ness creation on specimen collection and handling are recommended. Keywords: Postal service; specimen referral; turnaround time; drug resistance tuberculosis.

Abstract:
This review article examines the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus on the urinary system, as well as on mens health. Data on aspects of pathogenesis and features of the course of a new coronavirus infection are presented. Possible risk factors for contracting a new coronavirus infection associated with an abundance of angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) receptors in the kidneys and urinary tract, to which SARS-CoV-2 has an affinity, are considered. The article provides an extensive range of studies that provide convincing evidence for the presence of changes in the spermogram of patients who have undergone COVID-19. Works demonstrating gender differences in the incidence of COVID-19 and concomitant diseases are presented. The literature review considers both direct and indirect factors (oxidative stress, cytokine storm, decreased libido), through which coronavirus infection negatively affects male sexual health.

Abstract:
Although the insanity defense has been present in our criminal justice system for centuries, this paper discusses the utility of the defense as compared with that of an evidentiary attack on the mental elements of the crime itself. By reviewing insanity acquittal data and analyzing the substantive insanity defense and rules of evidence along with the progeny case law, we conclude that the insanity defense does not always provide the greater criminal defense option when mental health is in issue. There exists what this article refers to as “element negation,” which enables a criminal defendant to achieve complete acquittal based on a lack of the requisite mens rea in any charged crime. Because element negation is a viable defense to any crime, and it encompasses any evidence that would be used to proffer an insanity argument, mental disorder as evidence can be governed by the rules of criminal procedure and evidence, which may render the affirmative insanity defense a less appealing option.

Abstract:
A criminal offense requires two elements. First, it requires proof of misconduct that is specifically prohibited by law (actus reus). Second, it requires proof of sufficient intention or recklessness (mens rea) to warrant assignment of moral culpability for the act. For example, a person who kills another person intentionally is typically guilty of murder, while a person who kills recklessly or in the heat of passion in response to provocation may be guilty of manslaughter, and a person who kills accidentally is not guilty of any crime. Even if the elements of the offense have been proven by the prosecution, the actor may not be punishable if the defense proves that his conduct was either justified (e.g., self-defense) or excused (e.g., duress).
