The experiment was conducted at the Botany department, IBB, UNESP, Botucatu/SP, in a greenhouse. The plants were cultivated in nutrient solution no 2 of Hoagland & Arnon, with ionic strength reduced to 70%, in an entirely randomised design, with fours replicates, without salicylic acid and three concentrations of this compound applied through the leaves, constituting different treatments with concentrations equal to 0 (control), 75, 150 and 225 mg L-1. Assessments of growth and gas exchange were performed at 45, 60 and 75 and the assessments of pigments, total phenols and profiles of volatile substances at 45, 60, 75 and 90 days after transplantation. The results obtained were submitted into analysis of variance or regression and the averages compared by the Turkey test at 5% of probability. The results revealed that salicylic acid application did not influence the production of volatile substances, leaf production, dry matter or leaf area, discretely influencing physiological growth rates and increasing assimilation rates of CO2, carboxylation, stomatal conductance, efficiency of water use and transpiration and anthocyanins. It concludes that salicylic acid application influenced primary and specialised metabolism, elevating gas exchanges and influencing aspects of synthesis routes of antioxidant.

Thus, all plants were grown in a no 2 Hoagland & Arnon nutritive solution, varying the calcium level in three different proportions: the first group contained the standart level of calcium, of 160 mg L-1 found in this nutritive solution. The second group was grown with Ca2+ reduction in 50%, therefore, 80 mg L-1. The third group was grown with Ca2+ reduction in 90%, therefore, 16 mg L-1. The three groups were submitted to leaf pulverization with 100, 200 and 400 mg L-1 of ethephon. Thus, the plants remained with this treatment until the dates of harvests, which were performed at 46, 76, 106 and 136 days after the transplantation to nutritive solution. The design was completely randomized with twelve treatments constituted of three and four levels of calcium and ethephon, respectively, four replicates and four harvests. The application of ethephon on the leaves first started at the 31st day after the transplantation (DAT) to nutritive solution, and was performed at four epochs, with intervals of 30 days. Shoot length, leaf area, and dry matter of leaf blades, stems plus petioles, roots and total of the plants were determined in each harvest. For growth analysis, it was measured the physiological indexes absolute growth rate (AGR), relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate (NAR), leaf area ratio (LAR) and specific leaf area (SLA).

Abstract:
A mentor is a qualified mental health practitioner, namely in this instance a nurse who facilitates guides and supervises the learning experience and assesses the student’s competences in practice. This longitudinal study examines the perceptions of mentorship in clinical practice from nurses, as they move from students to recognised professionals with authority to advise and assess students’ competence in practice. This ethically approved study mainly uses qualitative methods. Initially it involved interviewing eight completing mental health nursing students, and 270 mainly qualitative questionnaires were sent to qualified mental health nurse mentors in clinical practice. The final data collection of the study involved interviewing six qualified nurses/mentors who were originally the students in this study. Existential phenomenology was a valuable means of interpreting the perceptions of both the students, qualified nurses and the mentors. This ontological perspective explores the consciousness of the self, operating within a collective consciousness of their world. The data analysis initially followed Van Manen’s holistic approach; then extracting essences, identifying themes and then synthesizing essences. This was then followed by an existential processing of the data from the first and second interviews. The results reveal that the students believe that mentoring is an absolute necessity for their practical training; but the mentoring experience is precarious due to the numerous barriers. The results also highlighted incidences where students who experience ineffective mentoring are inspired to become much more effective at mentoring, because they do not want their students to experience the poor mentoring they had received. The participants in this study said students who are not competent are still passing practice, and the craft of mental health caring is not taught to an appropriate standard. However, learning from the experience of the transitional process was also revealed, and how the development of the self affected the perception of mentoring.

Experiences of Barriers and Facilitators for Physical Activity from People with Mental Disorders who Participated in a Physical Activity Project - An Interview Study   Purpose: To explore the experiences regarding perceived barriers and facilitators for physical activity of three participants with mental disorders who took part in the Norwegian Physical Activity Mentor project. Design and methods: Descriptive qualitative design. Individual semi-structured interviews were used for data collection. Data from the interviews was used in two separate bachelor theses, written by Swedish and Norwegian physiotherapy students. This cooperation was part of the NordPlus Higher Education Program Joint Physiotherapy Education in Bachelor Thesis Module. Qualitative content analysis was used in processing the data. Findings: Perceived barriers for physical activity were: mental disorder symptoms, antipsychotics, undertaking physical activity independently and physical experiences. Perceived facilitators for physical activity were: positive mental effects, intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors, goal setting and routine. The experiences from the Physical Activity Mentor project, including the possibility of self-selected activities, were mainly positive. The support provided by the physical activity mentor was an important facilitator. Conclusion: Disease-related problems were perceived as barriers for physical activity. The most important perceived facilitator for physical activity was mental benefits from being physically active. External support from a physical activity mentor might facilitate physical activity for psychiatric outpatients.     Key words: mental disorder, physical activity, barriers, facilitators, mentor

Shah, Esta Denton. "Advances to Mental Accounting Theory| Evidence for Mental Stealing and Retroactive Malleable Mental Accounting." Thesis, Northwestern University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3705358.

Full text
Abstract:

Mental accounting, defined as the process whereby consumers code, categorize, and evaluate economic outcomes in the form of mental “budgets” (Thaler 1980; 1985), has been encouraged as a strategy to aid individuals in the regulation of finances and other resources. However, far less research has examined the pitfalls of mental accounting. Essay 1 investigates how mental accounting can lead to suboptimal decisions for others. We propose a novel hypothesis to understand an effect we term “mental stealing,” whereby mental accounts focus individuals on budgets so much that they forgo gifts that a gift-recipient would like. Essay 2 investigates how mental accounting for windfalls (i.e., unexpected gains in wealth) can lead to suboptimal spending on the self. We propose that expense categorizations are retroactively malleable, and can lead to overspending of windfalls. In total, the two essays of this dissertation enhance our study of consumer behavior by documenting new effects of mental accounts. And, in the process of documenting these new effects, this dissertation informs the mental accounting literature by identifying when mental accounting leads to suboptimal outcomes for both others and the self.

Abstract:
It is often supposed that we can make progress understanding singular thought about objects by claiming that thinkers use ‘mental files’. However, the proposal is rarely subject to sustained critical evaluation. This thesis aims to clarify and critique the claim that thinkers use mental files. In my introductory first chapter, I motivate my subsequent discussion by introducing the claim that thinkers deploy modes of presentation in their thought about objects, and lay out some of my assumptions and terminology. In the second chapter, I introduce mental files, responding to the somewhat fragmented files literature by setting out a core account of files, and outlining different ways of implementing the claim that thinkers use mental files. I highlight pressing questions about the synchronic and diachronic individuation conditions for files. In chapters three and four, I explore whether ‘de jure coreference’ can be used to give synchronic individuation conditions on mental files. I explore existing characterisations of de jure coreference before presenting my own, but conclude that de jure coreference does not give a useful account of the synchronic individuation conditions on files. In chapter five, I consider the proposal that thinkers must sometimes trade on the coreference of their mental representations, and argue that we can give synchronic individuation conditions on files in terms of trading on coreference. In chapter six, I bring together the account of files developed so far, compare it to the most developed theory of mental files published to date, and defend my account from the objection that it is circular. In chapter seven, I explore routes for giving diachronic individuation conditions on mental files. In my concluding chapter, I distinguish the core account of files from the idea that the file metaphor should be taken seriously. I suggest that my investigation of the consequences of the core account has shown that the file metaphor is unhelpful, and I outline reasons to exercise caution when using ‘files’ terminology.

Abstract:
I create process-oriented, mixed media work in an intuitive manner. I develop compositions by choosing from a wide range of materials and media. I have established a visual vocabulary that I use formally and, on occasion, symbolically to express my personal thoughts. My prints are primarily collagraphs pulled from plates that are constructed using foam, rope, sticks, cardboard, or screen prints. My fiber works are mixed media and often combine soft and stiff fabrics, dyes, pigments, embroidery, quilting, and screen printing. At times I find ways to integrate hard, rigid materials such as kiln-formed and sandblasted glass into my fiber pieces. My pieces tend to be intimately sized and detail oriented, requiring an up close and personal look from the viewer.

Abstract:
The importance of a currency war and its consequences is nowadays a hot topic of all economies around the world. My master thesis is designed to explain this concept, to introduce the main actors of the currency wars, the ways, in which national economies were and are trying to boost and improve their economic situation and highlight the main tools that are usually used by major powers within currency wars. The practical part is divided into three main sub-chapters that analyze the causes and consequences of currency wars, which we have previously witnessed. Analysis of the currency war I. relates to the years 1921-1936, the currency war II. relates to the period around World War II. and the formation of Bretton Woods system, and finally currency war III. relates to last years, when a superpowers like US, China and EU entered the war as a result of economic recessions of 2007.

Abstract:
Many large urban juvenile probation departments have begun to utilize mental health courts to meet the demands of the increasing number of individuals who have mental health issues that end up in the juvenile justice system. Diversion programs are designed to keep youth in the community and out of the juvenile justice system, but it is not clear whether these programs keep individuals from re-offending. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine whether diversion programs used in the mental health courts are helping to decrease recidivism for juveniles identified with mental illness. This study was also aimed at identifying how mental illnesses affect successful completion of programming. The theory of therapeutic jurisprudence was used as the theoretical foundation to help guide this quantitative, quasi-experimental study and answer the research questions. The data utilized was from a large urban juvenile probation department, which uses the mental health court as a diversion program. Data was collected from 2009 to 2017 on both youth who participated in the program and those who chose not to participate in the program. Chi-square and logistic regression were used to analyze the data. Based on the chi-square, recidivism rates were significantly impacted by participation in the mental health court. The data presented demonstrated mental health court is effective at reducing recidivism. The potential is there for positive social change in the treatment of youth with mental illness both in the community and the juvenile justice system.

Abstract:
This study explores the subjective wellbeing and subjective experience of mental health problems in UK mental health nurses using a mixed methods approach. It aimed to understand the relationships between mental health nurses' own mental health and their subjective wellbeing, and to explore the ways in which mental health nurses managed their own mental health and wellbeing and how they negotiated for and use their experiences both within and outside of their work. The mixed methods design had two phases. In phase one an online survey was sent to mental health nurses via their national professional bodies, the Royal College of Nursing and the Mental Health Nurses Association. The survey comprised three measures of subjective wellbeing, questions about personal and familial mental health history and questions about the impact of these experiences on mental health nursing work. 237 survey responses were included in the final statistical analysis. In the second phase 27 semi structured interviews were undertaken with a purposive sample of survey respondents who had both subjective experience of mental health problems and high subjective wellbeing. A major finding of the study was that mental health nurses critically appraised their experience of delivering and receiving mental health care from the expert perspectives of both being a nurse and having their own experience of mental ill health. Personal experience of mental illness was found to influence nursing practice in a number of ways: first, through overt disclosure and negotiation of professional boundaries; second, through the ‘use of the self as a tool’, the emotional labour of nursing; third, through the formation and development of professional nursing identity. This was in the context of a broader canvas of life experiences which participants considered to influence the development of their nursing identity, the use of self and self disclosure in their work. Mental health nurses in this study had a relatively low subjective wellbeing. Low subjective wellbeing was associated with having current mental health problems, and with having past experience of mental health problem. Personal experience of living with someone with mental health problems was associated with relatively higher subjective wellbeing. This study has implications for occupational health and human resources policy within healthcare organisations. The findings suggest that mental health nurses who present to primary care or occupational health services should be offered care and treatment commensurate with their expertise and experience. Employers’ ‘staff happiness strategies’ and occupational health promotion activities should address work life balance and what nurses could do outside of their work to be well, as well as addressing the effects that team and management changes have on staff wellbeing.

Abstract:
This thesis explores mental health literacy (MHL) and mental health difficulties in at-risk populations. Young people, particularly males, are vulnerable to the onset of mental health difficulties, failing to access support and increased risk of suicide. Supporting people with mental health difficulties and improving prognosis is an important area of public health concern. Chapter one is a systematic review of gender differences in MHL of young people (ages 12-25 years). 14 studies were identified and critically assessed. The nature of gender differences in MHL of young people is complex but most consistently reported in depression. Females tended to have higher levels of MHL than males. The implications for public health interventions and future research are discussed. Methodological components of MHL research, such as the use of case vignettes are also considered. Chapter two is a qualitative research study of male professional footballers’ lived experiences of mental health difficulties and help-seeking using interpretative phenomenological analysis. One superordinate theme emerged from the data; Survival. This is discussed through six subordinate themes and alongside existing literature pertaining to identity, transition, personality and emotional development. The clinical implications of the findings are discussed, as well as suggestions for future research. Chapter three is a reflective paper considering the use of Cognitive Analytic Therapy as a tool for reflexivity in qualitative research. The opportunities and limitations of this approach are considered, alongside reflections on the research process.

Abstract:
This research intended to discuss theoretically and illustrate with some clinical cases the assignment difficulties of mental states of children with autism, establishing a link between the concepts of mental representation and egocentrism in Piaget\'s genetic epistemology and the theory of mind. The Theory of mind has been defined by their researchers as the ability to attribute mental states (beliefs, desires, intentions and emotions) to onself and others, in order to explain, interpret and predict behaviors and it has achieved prominence with over the years, in relation to autism research in the international scene. However, some differences between their authors resulted in different ways to measure this capacity. Leslie (1987,1988) considers that the Theory of mind is already present in child\'s pretend play and employment of mental expressions used by children of two years. In contrast, Perner (1991) argues that the Theory of mind is only evident when the child has the ability to recognize that the mind is a system of representations about four to six years old. So, it is only after the resolution of the false-belief tasks that one could say that the child has a theory of mind, meaning that he distinguishes between the subjective and the physical world. The mental representation and the internal construction of the real world made by children were subjects extensively studied by Jean Piaget. Piaget (1947) argues that children reach a level of mental representation when they are able to differentiate between what is subjective and what is objective and when they overcome the egocentrism. While they think that everyone thinks like them, they don\'t find reasons to conform to common truths, and they won\'t be interested in seeking logical evidence about what they say. For Piaget, the egocentric thought is a primitive stage of logical thinking marked by three characteristics: predominance of the image of the concept, some unconscious thought and lack of logic. Based on Piaget\'s genetic epistemology and based on two studies case of one children with autism and one with neurotypical child development, this research concluded that these authors of the Theory of mind discourse on different stages of this capacity. Furthermore, through clinical interview, the employment of mental expressions and the analysis of the justifications of the participants in relation to the false belief task of Sally and Ann, this study concluded that the ability to attribute mental states to others requires the early overcoming of egocentrism, as described by Piaget. Therefore, children with autism, although they may employ mental expression in their speeches, they usually have difficulties to differentiate between the subjective and the real world, with a tendency to image representation at the expense of conceptual representation, unwillingness to prove what they say and difficulties in differentiate their own point of view from the other ones

Abstract:

Abstract:

Eriksson. C. (2010). How can mental top form be reached? Sport psychology consultants approach to mental training. Bachelor Thesis in Public Health. Gävle University, Academy of health and working life. The purpose of this study was to examine sport psychology consultants perceptions about mental training, and how they believe that mental top form could be achieved. Qualitative interviews were used as method. In total, five informants participated in the study. The result that emerged was that the informants felt that mental top form is about creating a balance between all parts of life. Trust for himself and his character was also important as well as the ideas you have. Becoming aware of the thought processes and learn to control those in a favorable direction is important. The basis for achieving mental top form was considered to bring the basic tension in the body. It was important to have clear goals. It was also essential to provide continuity in the mental training to achieve results. A powerful tool to use was considered to be the goal images, which means to see pictures of yourself for your inner that you want to work in different situations. Furthermore, it was important to stop and get to know yourself and your needs. Mental strength was considered to be the deciding factor when all other variables are equivalent. Should all work out mentally, it would be a higher minimum level because everyone would emerge. The conclusion of this study is that the mental training techniques used in sport can also be transferred to other contexts and to other groups of people to create mental health. But it is difficult to determine precisely which techniques each one needs because all seek out different things and all have different needs. It is of great importance to the mental workout is tailored to the individual's needs.

Abstract:
Although mental and physical health are likely to share common social causes, most mental-physical comorbidity research has focused on immediate mechanisms between mental and physical illness. This thesis takes a social epidemiological approach to mental-physical comorbidity, where social disadvantage and the disproportionate availability of resources are central. The amplified burden of comorbidity in terms of poor health and functioning may have implications for the relationship between comorbidity and mental health service use (MHSU). Whilst much research examines the impact of comorbidity on physical health services, MHSU is under-researched. Furthermore, comorbidity inequalities may be perpetuated through processes of cumulative disadvantage. For example, barriers to social participation may deplete resources over time, thus leading to worse health outcomes and more adverse social circumstances. This project therefore aims to: 1. Estimate the prevalence of comorbidity, and describe inequalities in mental-physical comorbidity by key socio-demographic and socioeconomic factors 2. Describe and explain the association between comorbidity and mental health service utilisation and quality 3. Describe the trajectories of social functioning by comorbidity Analyses make use of survey data from the South East London Community Health Survey (SELCoH) phases 1 (N=1698) and 2 (N=1052) (73% response among those approached at follow-up). Statistical methods used include weighted cross-sectional and longitudinal regression analyses. The results indicate that comorbidity is associated with distinct socio-economic inequalities (most consistently by household income), increased MHSU over time, and persistent social exclusion. This suggests that comorbidity reflects a process of cumulative disadvantage, which has important implications for comorbidity and health inequality research, and local services and policy makers. Altering the downward spiralling trajectories of health and social disadvantage among those with mental-physical comorbidity may be addressed through integrated care models, while interventions aimed at reducing social inequalities may effectively 3 prevent comorbidity and interrupt its downward spiralling course of disadvantage.

Abstract:
Mental health care is critical and while governments are trying to increase awareness of the problem the available resources is not sufficient to confront the growing problem. The thesis proposes a design theory, using Gregor and Jones’s (2007) ‘Anatomy of a Design Theory’ framework, for the current mental illness dilemma that all societies are facing. The proposed solution is one of using information systems, together with domain knowledge and conventional instruments from the field of psychology to create a general screening tool. The design theory takes an ontological approach to defining the domain’s knowledge, using the MINI instrument along with expert knowledge to form the basis of the artifact. The artifact consists of four main entities: Background Information, Screening Questions, Pre-Requisite Questions and Other Questions. The thesis discusses the theoretical rationale for the screening took and then presents an instantiation of the artifact. This tool would be able to screen any person (with the exception of the mentally handicapped) to ascertain if they have a mental disorder as defined in the DSM-IV.

In my dissertation I look at mental representations and cognitive processes that underlie mental arithmetic in the marketplace. This research contributes to behavioral pricing literature by outlining novel factors that influence consumers’ price difference judgments. Particularly, I uncover factors that make consumers more or less likely to fall prey to the left-digit anchoring bias (Essay 1) and factors that determine their tendency to rely on relative thinking in price difference evaluations (Essay 3). Further, this research provides new insights to the mental budgeting literature by identifying mental computation strategies that lead to more accurate basket price estimates (Essay 2). Overall, I expect my research to contribute to our understanding of consumers’ price judgments and suggest contexts and strategies leading to more accurate price evaluations

Abstract:
The Ethnic Mental Illness (EMI) Scale, a questionnaire to discriminate European and Hispanic attitudes toward mental illness, was developed. Fifty-one college students of Hispanic ethnicity and 194 college students of European ethnicity completed a 150 item questionnaire measuring attitudes toward mental illness. A cross-validation sample of 50 Hispanic students and 194 European students ethnicity yielded 15 items that reliably differentiated the two groups. Based upon content, the 15 items were grouped into six categories: hopefulness, trust, biological aspects of mental illness, childhood origins, finances, and sex differences. Items which did not discriminate Hispanics and Europeans are described, as these items are possible indicators of common attitudes toward mental illness. A group of 66 Asian students also participated in the study. The items which differentiate Asians from Hispanics and Europeans are described. These items were not cross-validated.

Castro, Amanda E. "MENTAL HEALTH MEMORIES: A WEB-BASED ARCHIVE FOR MENTAL HEALTH STORIES." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/517.

Full text
Abstract:
The Mental Health Memories project is an online archive created in order to display and preserve the personal histories of those with mental health experiences. The project aims to fill a void in available material culture related to the history of mental health and its preservation. Participants’ contributions include: oral histories, personal items, documents, and audio. Bringing together multimedia sources, the MHMemories website allows for the preservation of these items and stories through the digitization of contributions. This method allows for participants’ items to stay in their possession while also becoming part of the archive. In order to recruit participants, the Mental Health Memories project teamed up with the Psychiatric Stories Archive, based at California State University San Bernardino, and the San Bernardino County Behavioral Health Clubhouse. Three collection days facilitated the gathering of materials. The final product is the MHMemories.org/.com website which showcases the contributions of participants. The Mental Health Memories project helps to illustrate the diversity of mental health experiences.

Abstract:
Despite the prediction that religion would wane in the 21st century, evidence suggests otherwise. It is important therefore for mental health professionals to understand the role of religion in the lives of their clients and to appreciate its impact on mental health. Research suggests a moderate inverse relationship between religion and depression and anxiety with some cross-cultural support. The relationship is however complex and context needs to be taken into account. The effect of culture and the importance of intrinsic religiosity are discussed. Much research is conducted in the US in the field of psychiatry, suggesting a gap in the British psychological literature. Some implications for clinical practice are discussed. The interplay between religion, culture and wellbeing is discussed

Montgomery, Natalie D. "Tensions Along the Path Towards Mental Health Literacy for New Immigrant Mothers: Perspectives on Mental Health and Mental Illness." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/30728.

Full text
Abstract:
New immigrants to Canada are identified as a vulnerable population in mental health and, as a result, organizations are signaling the need to enhance their mental health supports. The research uses focus groups and questions based on the messaging of a Canadian school mental health program to understand how new immigrant mothers interpret and develop key aspects of their mental health literacy and how they attain parent empowerment. A thematic assessment of the knowledge, interpretation, action and decision-making of the study participants (n=7), all recent immigrants to Canada and mothers of high school students, shows that new immigrant mothers are prepared to follow a path towards mental health literacy. At the same time, however, there are barriers that can block progression towards mental health literacy for this audience. These findings are supported by three umbrella themes: the first main theme “home as haven” espouses maternal roles in mental health maintenance such as protector and communicator, the second main theme “knowledge versus suspicions of mental health and mental illness” represents informed views and support of mental illness and myths and illusions of mental illness, and the third main theme, “additional barriers to mental health literacy” includes the hardships of immigration and fear of knowledge. The study concludes that new immigrant mothers appreciate the importance of fostering mental health understanding and discussion with their children at the same time that they encounter obstacles to the advancement of their mental health literacy. This study is relevant to the field of communication in that it demonstrates the experience of new immigrant mothers as a secondary audience in mental health programming. As the caregivers of their children, they are in position to enforce the messages and health maintenance behaviours of a school-based mental health program aimed at adolescents.

Abstract:
Abstract: In this project, four aromatic and flavouring species of Lamiaceae family, Calamintha nepeta, Mentha cervina, Mentha pulegium and Mentha spicata were selected to prepare their aqueous extracts, hydrodistillation extracts (EHD) and fresh plant extracts (EPF), to evaluate their antioxidant and neuroprotective properties. Extracts were rich in bioactive compounds and EHD had higher phenol and flavonoid content. A. salina lethality test showed low toxicity of extracts. EHD showed higher antioxidant potential to scavenge free radicals, protect lipid oxidation and prevent the hemic iron oxidation. EHD presented higher inhibitory activity of catalases (CAT), glutathione peroxidases (GPx), acetylcholinesterases (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterases (BChE) enzyme systems. Results showed that EHD from these flavouring herbs are promising extracts against oxidative stress with potential application in the food and/or pharmaceutical industries.
