Abstract:
ABSTRACTCurrently, menopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is indicated in the presence of vasomotor symptoms and menopausal genitourinary syndrome and for preventing bone mass loss and early menopause. After cardiovascular and thromboembolic risks were demonstrated in women using HRT, new searches for hormone replacement alternatives began. This review aims to point out the indications of HRT for women in menopause and discuss the update of the new bioidentical hormone therapy (BHT). This is a narrative review, carried out from October to November 2020, by means of the survey of evidence in the Google Scholar, PubMed® and Scielo databases. Despite the controversy in literature involved in prescribing BHT, its importance as a new post-menopausal therapeutic method is irrefutable, which has been the subject of discussions and has an emerging need for new well-designed clinical trials. Therefore, it is noted that the efficacy and safety of BHT are still under study and that, among the existing evidence, they are associated with the reduction of side effects, compared to conventional HRT, and have a good clinical response to symptoms of menopause.

Abstract:
Background: There is limited research regarding the menopause transition in the emergency services; however, all women will experience this life phase, which can have a significant impact on personal well-being, workplace attendance and performance. The aim of this survey was to explore personal and work impacts of the menopause for all female staff in the ambulance setting. Methods: A purpose-designed, 20-question survey, based on the Menopause Rating Scale and British Menopause Survey, was developed to understand menopausal symptoms and their impact on female staff in one UK ambulance service. Disseminated during 1‐31 July 2019, it resulted in a convenience sample of 522 responses, which were analysed using descriptive statistics and thematic approaches. Results: Typically, respondents were either pre-menopausal or peri-menopausal, with approximately a third being menopausal or post-menopausal. Over half worked in emergency operational delivery, and typically worked shifts or unsocial hours. For those who had experienced menopause symptoms, the most commonly reported were tiredness or low energy levels, difficulty sleeping (including insomnia) and mood changes (including anxiety or depression). Symptoms impacted respondents’ well-being, work and home life. Most had not expected the symptoms they experienced. The majority of respondents did not feel supported at work, with lack of menopausal symptom awareness and personal impact, working times and patterns, and sense of embarrassment of most concern. Other issues included lack of managerial and peer support, inadequate working environment and uniform, lack of dignity and choice, and no dedicated menopause policy. Conclusions: It is understood that this is the first survey to explore female ambulance staff menopause experiences. The impact of menopausal symptoms can be significant. Menopause awareness in this ambulance service is lacking and there is clear scope for initiatives for improved staff support and well-being. Further research is warranted to explore how best to support ambulance staff with the menopause transition.

Abstract:
Menopause is a phase of life experienced by every woman. During menopause, there is a decrease in estrogen levels which has an impact of physical changes that cause complaints during menopause which can reduce the quality of life of postmenopausal women. Some menopausal women in Laban Village, Menganti District, Gresik Regency experienced menopausal complaints but they did not know the condition was normal and did not know how to deal with these complaints, so most of them were excessively anxious about the conditions they were experiencing. The purpose of this community service activity is to increase the knowledge of menopausal women through health training activities with the topic of being healthy and happy during menopause. The target of this activity is 21 postmenopausal women and the expected outcome is an increase in knowledge. This community service activity had been held from December 1, 2021 to January 8, 2022. Health training was carried out through individual counseling or group counseling (2-3) people. The media used were leaflets about physical and psychological changes during menopause, physical activity during menopause, and a phytoestrogen diet. The results showed that before health training 57% of menopausal women had less knowledge, after health training 57% had good knowledge. Health training about being healthy and happy during menopause is effective in increasing knowledge. Good knowledge is expected to increase awareness of menopausal women's acceptance of physical and psychological changes that occur during menopause and awareness to overcome menopausal complaints so that quality of life increases.

Abstract:
Introduction: Menopause is an unavoidable and sometimes problematic condition in which women may suffer from a number of health problems. Knowledge of the major symptoms associated with menopause helps reduce the burden and stress associated with the condition. In this context, a study was conducted to establish baseline data regarding menopausal health problems among Nepalese women. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 2000 women aged over 40 years to identify their knowledge, attitude and practice related to menopausal health problems. Data was collected by interviewing the women and doing physical examination. Analysis was done using descriptive statistics and SPSS software was used for data analysis. Results: A cohort of 2073 women (ages 40-60 years) participated in the research, among them 2000 yielded complete response. The study revealed that 820 (41%) women had reached menopause. The average age of menopause was 48.7 years. Majority of the women 1183 (59.2%) in the study did not know about menopausal health problems. Abnormal bleeding 353 (17.65%), sweating 315 (15.75%), hot flushes 299 (14.95%), joint/muscle pain 285 (14.25%) were the most common menopausal symptoms known by the women. Joint pain 736 (36.8%), hot flushes 584 (29.2%), irregular bleeding 582 (29.1%) were the most common experienced symptoms of menopause and only 586 (29.3%) consulted the health workers to alleviate menopausal symptoms. Moreover, most of the women 926 (46.3%) accepted menopause as a part of life. Conclusions: The research has tried to establish the baseline of menopausal health problems in the Nepalese women. The average age of menopause was 48.7 years. Majority did not know about menopausal health problems. Further researches with nationally representative sample are recommended to further explore the menopausal health problems of Nepalese women. Keywords: health problems; menopause; Nepal; women.

Abstract:
Background: Hormonal variations are known to influence the course of multiple sclerosis (MS). Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the impact of menopause in MS course, including disease activity and disability progression. Methods: We conducted a retrospective longitudinal cohort study including all women, older than 44, post-menopausal, with a diagnosis of MS at least 1 year before menopause. We evaluated the impact of menopause in MS course comparing clinical and radiologic outcomes within 5 years before and after menopause. We repeated the analysis in subgroups of patients without disease-modifying treatment (DMT) change or co-morbidities diagnosed during the observation period, considering that those factors might also impact MS outcomes. Results: Thirty-seven women, with a mean age at the time of menopause of 49.8 (±4.06) years were included in the analysis. Within 5 years following menopause, we observed a decrease in the annualized relapse rate (0.37 ± 0.35 pre-menopause vs. 0.08 ± 0.18 post-menopause, p < 0.001) compared with the same period before menopause, while the EDSS progression rate remained stable (0.13 ± 0.24 EDSS point/year pre-menopausal vs. 0.13 ± 0.18 post-menopause, p = 0.935). EDSS progression events frequency was similar before and after the menopause (37.8 vs. 48.6%, respectively, p = 0.424). These observations persisted in patients’ subgroups without DMT switch or co-morbidities. Conclusions: Following menopause, we observed a reduction in the relapse rate, but the disability progression continued at a similar rate, compared to the pre-menopausal period. These observations persisted in the subgroup of patients without changes in DMT or co-morbidities diagnosed during the observation period.

Abstract:
Background: Menopause signifies the beginning of a non-reproductive phase from the reproductive period. Although it is considered a natural life transition, recent studies have indicated that a woman’s menopausal experience may impact her quality of life. While studies have examined Malaysian women’s knowledge and awareness of menopause, they have focused on the prevalence of menopausal symptoms and sociocultural aspects. These investigations also used a quantitative design that may have limited the information regarding the nature and experience of menopause. Objectives: This study explores women’s perceptions and understanding of their menopausal experience. Methods: A total of 20 menopausal women were recruited using purposive sampling through social media in the state of Pahang, Malaysia. In-depth semi-structured interviews were used to explore how they perceived their menopausal experience. The data were then analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: Three themes that emerged from the findings included perceptions of menopause, biopsychosocial changes and help-seeking behavior. For many Muslim women, menopause was perceived as a time for them to engage in religious commitment more than they had before. Conclusion: The study findings uncovered a knowledge gap and a lack of support for women impacted by menopause. Muslim women regarded their menopause phase as a time for them to engage in religious duty fully. These results indicate the need for a psychosocial intervention and educational program to ensure women a better transition throughout their menopausal phase.

Abstract:
Menopause is a period when female reproduction ends due to a reduction in the hormones estrogen and progesterone which is marked by the cessation of menstruation. During menopause, physical and psychological changes occur which cause changes in self-image (body image). This change creates stress in itself for menopausal mothers. If the mother cannot adapt, this stressful condition will cause anxiety. This descriptive correlation research aims to identify the self-image of mothers during menopause, the level of anxiety of mothers during menopause, and the relationship between self-image and the level of anxiety of mothers during menopause. The respondents were 32 menopausal mothers who live in Ciceri Village. The data collection process was carried out by filling out a questionnaire using the interview method. The correlation test used is Pearson's product moment r. The results showed that there was a significant positive correlation between self-image and maternal anxiety levels during menopause (r = 0.39; p = 0.02) with the interpretation of a moderate relationship. From the results of this study it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between self-image and the level of anxiety of mothers during menopause. Therefore, special attention is needed for menopausal mothers, not only on physical problems, but also psychological problems. Health education is needed for menopausal mothers, and so that mothers can accept gracefully that menopause is a natural process that all women will go through, adapting to all conditions that occur during menopause, so that anxiety can be avoided

Abstract:
Background: The world is struggling with the rising number of covid-19 cases. Few studies are available to propose the effect of menopause on covid-19. We are submitting a research article targeted at identifying menopause as an independent risk factor for severe Covid-19. Aims and Objectives: Determine whether menopausal women are at higher risk of developing severe Covid-19 infection as compared to menstruating women of the same age group. Materials and Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study that included patients ages varies from 40 to 55 years from the medical record department of LNMC Bhopal, India. We enrolled 65 female patients after analysing records of 2500 patients. We divided the entire study population into two groups, the menopause group, and the non-menopausal group. Result: Out of 65 patients, 27 patients were in the menopause group, and 38 patients were in the non-menopause group. The mean D-dimer in the menopause group is 1100.78 ng/ml and in the non-menopause group is 727.63 ng/ml, which is statistically significant. (p-value 0.04) The mean value of C-Reactive protein is 27.11 mg/l and 16.74 mg/l among the menopause and non-menopause groups, respectively (p-value0.041). Twelve out of 17 patients who develop moderate-to-severe disease belong to the menopause group and five patients in the non-menopause group (p-value 0.005). Conclusion: In the present study, we witnessed that the disease is more severe in the menopause group than in the non-menopause group (p<0.005). This study can help recognize the high-risk cases and may be helpful to plan the treatment policies for the menopausal women who contract the Covid-19.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Aim The aim of this study is to determine the age and symptoms of menopause, and attitude and perception of postmenopausal women toward menopause in a rural area of Tamil Nadu. Materials and methods This is a cross-sectional observational study of 500 women in a rural area of Tamil Nadu. Women aged 40 to 55 years who had attained natural menopause and had cessation of menses for at least 1 year were included in the study. Women who had attained surgical menopause or menopause secondary to medical illness were excluded from the study. A self-structured questionnaire was used to collect information. Results The mean age of attaining menopause was 45.75 ± 3.83 years; 87% women were symptomatic with at least one symptom. Majority of women (78.2%) had psychosomatic symptoms followed by vasomotor symptoms (55.8%); 68.4% women welcomed menopause with positive attitude; 19.4% women were indifferent and 12.2% women had negative attitude toward menopause. About 24% women felt that the symptoms of menopause were distressing; 23.2% women availed some form of treatment for their symptoms. Conclusion Many women are affected by menopausal symptoms. Some women are affected severely by these symptoms. Lack of awareness, economic factors, sociocultural factors, myths, and inaccessibility to health services can negatively affect the attitude of women toward menopause. Clinical significance Menopause is an important transitional phase of life in all women. The waning ovarian hormone level causes several symptoms, some of which can be distressing to some women. Age and symptoms of menopause are influenced by several factors. Attitude and perception of women toward menopause reflect the awareness and health care accessibility in the community. Creating awareness of menopausal symptoms can improve utilization of health services and the quality of life of postmenopausal women. How to cite this article Ganitha G, Premalatha PB, Kannan I. Abstract:
BACKGROUND <br />Menopause is a condition in which the menstrual periods have stopped for the last 12 months due to cessation of ovarial functions causing estrogen hormones to decrease. Various studies find that many factors affect cognitive function at post-menopausal age among others the decrease in estrogens, age at menopause, duration of menopause, and education. However, the effects have been subject to controversy. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship of age, age at menopause, estradiol level, and education with cognitive function among healthy post-menopausal women. <br /><br />METHODS <br />A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 31 post-menopausal women between 50 to 75 years old. Data on age, age at menopause, and education were collected using a questionnaire. The estradiol levels were measured using an electrochemiluminescent immunoassay (ECLIA). The Indonesian version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA INA) was used to assess the cognitive function. Multiple linear regression was used to analyze the data. A p&lt;0.05 was considered statistically significant.<br /><br />RESULTS <br />Age (b=-0.086; 95% C.I.=-0.263-0.090; p=324) and estradiol levels (b=0.106; 95% C.I.=-0.018 -0.230; p=0.092) were not significantly associated with cognitive function. However, education (b=1.537; 95% C.I.=0.176-2.898; p=0.028) and age at menopause (b=0.364;0.056-0.671; p=0.022) were significantly associated with cognitive function. Age at menopause was the most influential factor of cognitive function (Beta=0.402) compared to education (Beta=0.394).<br /><br />CONCLUSION <br />Later age at menopause could increase cognitive function in post-menopausal women. Our findings are that modifiable factors that delay age at menopause should receive attention, in order to promote cognitive function. <br /><br />Keywords: Age at menopause, estrogens, cognitive function, post-menopausal women

Abstract:
More than half of persons living with HIV infection in the United States (U.S.) will be ≥50 years of age by 2020, including postmenopausal women. We conducted a systematic literature review about the effects of (1) HIV infection on age at menopause and (2) menopause on antiretroviral therapy (ART) response, in order to inform optimal treatment strategies for menopausal women living with HIV infection. We used the Ovid Medline database from 1980 to 2012. We included studies that focused on HIV-infected persons, included postmenopausal women, and reported outcome data for either age at menopause or response to ART across menopause. We identified six original research articles for age at menopause and five for response to ART across menopause. Our review revealed that current data were conflicting and inconclusive; more rigorous studies are needed. Disentangling the effects of menopause requires well-designed studies with adequate numbers of HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected women, especially disproportionately affected women of color. Future studies should follow women from premenopause through menopause, use both surveys and laboratory measurements for menopause diagnoses, and control for confounders related to normal aging processes, in order to inform optimal clinical management for menopausal women living with HIV.

Abstract:
PURPOSE: Premenopausal women with breast cancer often enter a premature menopause during initial treatment of their malignancy, with resulting loss of childbearing capacity, onset of menopausal symptoms, and subsequent prolonged exposure to long-term risks of menopause. Adjuvant therapy is believed to contribute to this early menopause. PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred eighty-three premenopausal women with locoregional breast cancer (tumor-node-metastasis staging system classification, T1-3 N0-1 M0) who had undergone surgical treatment and provided information on menopausal status at diagnosis and 1 year later were enrolled. Systemic adjuvant therapy was recorded. Univariate and multivariate predictors of menopause were examined. RESULTS: Age, weight gain, tumor stage, nodal stage, and systemic adjuvant therapy (chemotherapy, tamoxifen) were all significant univariate correlates of menopause. In multivariate analysis, age, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy (tamoxifen) made significant independent contributions to the onset of menopause. CONCLUSION: Age and systemic chemotherapy are the strongest predictors of menopause in women with locoregional breast cancer. They independently contribute to menopause. A graphic representation of our multivariate model allows an estimation of risk of menopause according to patient age and planned adjuvant treatment, and it may facilitate clinical decision-making.

Objective: To determine the factors of iron deficiency anaemia among the post-menopausal women in our population. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Medicine, Pak Emirates Military Hospital, Rawalpindi Pakistan, from Aug 2019 to Jan 2020. Methodology: A total of 300 post-menopausal women were included in this study. Menopausal status was taken as one year after the last menstrual period. Iron deficiency anaemia was diagnosed, based on haemoglobin and ferritin levels. In addition, the relationship of age, age at menopause, comorbid medical illnesses and duration of menopause was assessed with the presence of iron deficiency anaemia among the post-menopausal women participating in this study. Results: Out of 300 post-menopausal women studied in the given period, 124(41.3%) had no anaemia, while 176(58.7%) had the iron deficiency anaemia. Furthermore, 225(75.0%) had menopause after the age of forty, while 75(25.0%) had menopause after the age of forty. After applying the binary logistic regression analysis, we found that advancing age, longer duration since menopause and presence of medical comorbidities had a statistically significant association with anaemia in the target population. Conclusion: This study showed a high frequency of iron deficiency anaemia among post-menopausal women. In addition, women with longer duration since menopause, advanced age and other medical illnesses were more at risk of having iron deficiency anaemia s compared to other women.

Abstract:
Background: Menopause is a physiological change due to which women passes from fertile to infertile period. Decreased oestrogen production in post menopausal women alter the lipid metabolism. Since altered serum lipid profile seen in menopause is one of the significant risk factors for developing coronary heart diseases, influence of menopause on lipid levels is aimed to study. Aim and Objective: To study the influence of menopause on serum lipid profile by estimating the level of serum cholesterol and various lipoproteins in premenopausal and post menopausal women. Methods: After getting ethical committee approval, in this cross sectional study, women of age 45- 55 and normal BMI attending Government Sivagangai Medical College for master health checkup were selected. Informed consent obtained and estimation of serum lipid profile was done for all of them. Results: Statistical analysis was done by students t test and the results were compared between pre and post menopausal women. In post menopausal women, the mean values of triglycerides (p=0.016) and very low density lipoprotein levels (p=0.046) were increased significantly. Conclusion: Significant increase in serum triglycerides and very low density lipoproteins is due to menopause which causes changes in body metabolism. Serum lipid levels should be checked periodically after menopause and life style modifications should be adviced at an earlier stage.

Abstract:
Abstract Menopause is the final phase where a woman's menstrual bleeding stops completely. At the age of 50 years, women enter menopause, resulting in a decrease or loss of the estrogen hormone, which causes women to experience complaints or disorders that often interfere with their daily activities and can even reduce their quality of life. Several factors that influence mothers not being ready to accept changes during menopause include education, low knowledge, work, attitudes, religion, the role of midwives, social culture and information that is still lacking. One effort to increase mothers' readiness to face menopause is to changing lifestyle and eating patterns, namely by consuming nutrients that can reduce menopausal symptoms and prevent problems that arise after menopause. The aim of this activity is to increase mothers' knowledge about balanced nutrition during menopause. The method for implementing community service activities used is in the form of counseling. After carrying out this community service activity, conclusions that can be drawn include an increase in knowledge about balanced nutrition during the menopause. The hope is that menopausal mothers can adopt a healthy lifestyle by eating nutritious food and doing physical exercise, for example seniors' exercise. By adopting a healthy lifestyle, it is hoped that the quality of life of menopausal women will be better.

Abstract:
Abstract Globally, people are living longer with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and older individuals are becoming infected. Menopause symptoms affect women’s health and are associated with perceived declines in wellbeing. This study assessed and compared the menopause symptom experience and perceived wellbeing among HIV positive and negative older women in Ibadan Nigeria Focus group discussions were conducted among menopausal women attending the ARV and GOP clinics at the University College Hospital Ibadan. Opinions of discussants on knowledge and experience of menopausal symptoms, perceptions about the menopause and perceived health status were explored. A total of 90 HIV positive and 92 HIV negative women aged between 40 to 60 years were sampled. Knowledge of the cause of menopause was poor, with more HIV positive women opining that sexual promiscuity causes menopause. The majority of the discussants had adequate knowledge of menopausal symptoms with most of them reporting vasomotor and musculoskeletal symptoms. In both groups, perceptions about the menopause were generally positive as most of them opined that the menopause means freedom from sexual activity and child birth. More HIV negative women perceived themselves to be in good health compared to HIV positive women. Menopause induces many of the same metabolic changes that are being observed with HIV infection, and this may affect the health and quality of life of aging women with HIV infection. There’s a need for health education and health promoting interventions that will help these women in coping with the double burden of HIV infection and menopause.

The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge of Emirati women aged 30–64 about menopause, menopausal hormone therapy (MHT), and their associated health risks, and additionally, to determine the relationships between Emirati women’s knowledge about menopause and their sociodemographic and reproductive characteristics. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted of 497 Emirati women visiting five primary healthcare centers in Dubai. Data were collected using a questionnaire composed of sociodemographic and reproductive characteristics, menopause knowledge scale (MKS), and menopause symptoms knowledge and MHT practice. The mean menopause symptoms knowledge percentage was 41%, with a standard deviation of 21%. There were significant differences in the mean knowledge percentage among categories of education level (p < 0.001) and employment (p = 0.003). No significant differences in the knowledge percentages were found among categories of menopausal status. “Pregnancy cannot occur after menopause” was the statement with the highest knowledge percentage (83.3%), while the lowest knowledge percentages were “risk of cardiovascular diseases increases with menopause’’ (23.1%), “MHT increases risk of breast cancer’’ (22.1%), and “MHT decreases risk of colon cancer’’ (13.9%). The knowledge of Emirati women about menopause, MHT, and related heart diseases was very low; therefore, an education campaign about menopause and MHT risks is needed to improve their knowledge for better coping with the symptoms.

Abstract:
Objective: Menopause age and bone mineral density are positively related and there is a rapid bone loss in the early post-menopausal period. A ratio of 30% of post-menopausal women are affected from osteoporosis developing due to bone loss and this causes 40% risk of fracture in a 50- year old woman. Materials and Methods: In this sudy, serum osteocalcin and urine deoxypridinoline levels were analyzed in 102 postmenapausal and 48 healthy premenopausal controls who presented to gynecology outpatient clinic. Bone densitometry was obtained from all postmenopausal women. Postmenopausal patients were further divided into four groups according to time since menopause:<5 years, 5-9 years, 10-19 years and >20 years. Results: Mean (SD) age in 48 premenopausal women was 47.7 (3.7) while it was 56.5 (6.8) in 102 post-menopausal women. 34 out of 102 post-menopausal women had surgical menopause due to bilateral oopheroctomy+hysterectomy while the remaining had natural menopause. No significant difference was found in bone-turnover markers between women with surgical and natural menopause. Conclusion: Although there was not a statistically significant difference between bone-turnover markers, bone mineral density stays lower in surgical menopausal patients and this difference disappear only after about 20 years. Also bone turnover markers are usually high up to five years after surgical menopause and return to normal levels after then. Thus, our study suggested that oopheroctomy does not cause additional risk to hysterectomy. We also suggest that there is not a long-term relationship between serum bone turnover markers or bone density and the etiology of menopause. (Turk J Rheumatol 2010; 25: 29-33)

Abstract:
It is widely accepted that menopause leads to changes in hormonal status, metabolism and lipid profile. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of menopause on the concentrations of lipids, lipoproteins and, the influence of estradiol, progesterone, FSH, LH on lipid profile in menopausal women as well. The menopausal women had higher but non-significant (p>0,05) concentrations of total cholesterol, VLDL, LDL, and triglycerides than women with regular menstruation. The concentration of HDL was significantly lower in menopausal women than in women with regular menstruation (p<0,05). Also, the concentration of apolipoprotein B was significantly higher in menopausal women (p<0,05), but the concentrations of apolipoprotein and lipoprotein (a) were lower but without significance (p>0,05). Estrogen concentration has significant negative correlation with VLDL and triglycerides (p<0,05) and significant positive correlation with HDL (p<0,05) in menopausal women. Progesterone concentration has shown no correlation with concentrations of lipids and lipoproteins in menopause. We can conclude that menopause leads to changes in lipid profile by reducing HDL, and elevating apolipoprotein B levels, thus increasing the risk for cardiovascular disease. These changes were caused by reduction of estrogen concentrations in menopause.

Background: Menopause is a biological event characterized by the complexity of factors. On an average one-third of the women’s life consists of the post-menopause years, and health care programs for women do not address concerns beyond reproductive ages. The aim of this study was to describe the magnitude of menopause-related symptoms, the pattern of health care seeking, and associated factors. To assess the prevalence of gynecological disease in post-menopausal women. Methods: This cross-sectional study was done in Karpaga Vinayaga Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Center - obstetrics and gynecology OPD. Over a period, months in the year 2019. Stages of reproductive aging workshop (STRAW) revised criteria and nomenclature are used for the ascertainment of menopause and inclusion of the women in the study. It provided a comprehensive basis for staging since there were more complexities on ascertainment of menopause explained. The STRAW criteria are considered as the gold standard for assessing menopausal stages. Results: A total of 600 participants were included in the study. The proportion of women who had at least one menopause-related symptom was 95.95 (95% CI 93.73-97.54) and 58.3% of women had severe symptoms. Severities of symptoms in psychological, physical, vasomotor, and sexual domains were 56.7%, 70.5%, 49.3%, and 10.2% respectively. Premature menopause (p<0.016), induced nature of menopause (p<0.031), dyslipidemia (p<0.006) and other medical condition (p<0.003) were associated with severity of menopausal related symptoms. Conclusions: A high proportion of women are affected by menopause-related symptoms. Care seeking for all symptoms is not uniform, indicative of a lack of knowledge about the treatable nature of many of these symptoms. Sensitization of both women and the health care system may serve to address this issue of menopause-related symptoms and the possibility of treatment for these.

Abstract:
Menopause, which may accelerate the hallmarks of the natural aging process, represents a point in time characterized by the permanent cessation of menstruation following the loss of ovarian estrogen production. Unlike natural menopause, which is characterized by a gradual decrease in estrogen production, when both ovaries are removed before the natural age of menopause, the onset of estrogen deprivation is abrupt. Further, a decrease in genome methylation frequently occurs in aging cells, and the major interspersed repetitive DNA elements in humans are Alu elements. In blood cells, Alu demethylation starts at an age of approximately 40 years, and increases with age. Here, we explored the Alu methylation levels corresponding to age-matched pre-menopausal, naturally postmenopausal, and surgically postmenopausal women aged 45–55 years (n = 60 in each group). Our results indicated that the body mass index (BMI), time-since-menopause, and Alu methylation levels corresponding to the three groups were significantly different. However, no correlations between Alu methylation level and BMI, time-since-menopause, or age were observed. Additionally, the Alu methylation level corresponding to the natural post-menopause group was significantly lower those corresponding to the pre-menopausal (p = 0.001) and surgical post-menopausal (p = 0.037) groups. In conclusion, Alu hypomethylation occurs in naturally postmenopausal women, implying that when women reach the age of natural menopause, the cell aging process may progress significantly with genome hypomethylation. These findings, notwithstanding, further studies are necessary to clarify whether bilateral oophorectomy before the age of menopause affects the cell aging process to a greater extent than natural menopause, and whether estrogen therapy or other interventions can delay cell aging in this regard.
