Abstract:
Men's health issues and depression have both been identified as key priorities in health policy in Australia. A community health service in Melbourne has developed and delivered an integrated and holistic series of interventions specifically targeting depression in men, in addition to individual counselling services. These include a psycho-educational group program, an ongoing therapeutic and support group, and walking and gym exercise activities. Levels of participation, and outcomes, indicate that this type of package of services can be a highly successful way for community health services to respond to issues relating to men's health and wellbeing.

Mythopoetic organisations are popular among largely middle-class (elite) men in well-resourced countries. These organisations have sprung up in the last twenty years to create a space where men come together to address issues of masculinity. Many pro-feminist writers have questioned the capacity of mythopoetic men’s groups to promote gender equality. They see them as more likely to provide support for, rather than undermine, patriarchy.

Abstract:
Western societies are increasingly becoming aware of the many problems facing boys and men. In Australia these problems include one of the highest youth suicide rates in the world, a high divorce rate, with most divorces being instigated by women, the breakdown of the family, and conflicting messages about what it is to be 'a man'. This study examines and describes how a group of 15-17 year old young men, who attend a private single sex school in Canberra, describe their beliefs and attitudes about becoming adult men. Participants were asked to respond to questions posed in a survey designed specifically for this research. These questions looked at relationships, gender roles, family, fatherhood, work and leisure and whether impending manhood appeared confusing. The context in which participants are situated is one of cultural and social flux; it was the current discourse and debate in Australia about how to be a man, men's issues, and the perception of men in crisis, which gave this study its broad contextual frame. Contrary to the conventional wisdom about boys/young men who attend elite private schools, the participants in this study emerged as egalitarian and flexible in their attitudes with regard to relationships, gender roles, parenting and work. This study therefore in part refutes the stereotypes, which surround students at private boys' schools, including those that purport that these students will hold predominantly hegemonic, traditional views about masculinity and their role as men. This thesis presents the voices of some three hundred young men, adding to an area of research, which is contested and vigorous in its development. By exploring the beliefs and attitudes of a group of Australians who are on the brink of manhood tentative insights have been offered, and, believe, some illumination gained. The dilemmas posed for meaningful adulthood for young men in Australia are very real. We need to listen to what young men have to say.

Abstract:
Background: A range of factors contribute to men with cancer having worse mortality and morbidity rates than women. The research specifically focused on psychosocial issues and health behaviours in men with cancer, and factors affecting help seeking behaviour. Methods: A mixed-methods study recruited adult men with cancer in the East of Scotland. The quantitative cross-sectional study explored psychosocial issues, health behaviours, and desire for support. Data from the Scottish Longitudinal Study were accessed to check sample representativeness. The qualitative study built on the preliminary findings of the quantitative study and used semi-structured interviews to explore factors affecting men's access to support. Inductive thematic analysis was undertaken. Results: 127 men with cancer completed the questionnaire. Being separated or divorced, younger and living in a high deprivation area was associated with poor psychosocial outcomes and some lifestyle behaviours. Social support was also influential. Twenty participants were interviewed. Appraisal of, and coping with, cancer in addition to biopsychosocial antecedents, the role of masculinity, and service contexts impacted on help seeking. The findings support a modified model of the transactional model of stress and coping relevant to men with cancer, which is new and original since it specifically incorporates the role of masculinity, highlights feedback from coping to appraisal, and recognises important service context factors that impact men's service access choices. Discussion: Legitimisation of help seeking and the use of emotion-focused coping styles were needed by some men, particularly where ideas about masculinity played a strong role in men's appraisal of, and coping with cancer. Implications for practice and policy relate to the survivorship agenda given the ongoing support men with cancer may need. Related to this, there is a need to carefully tailor and advertise services to men, and for health professionals to help legitimise the use of certain coping strategies and services.

Minieri, Alexandra M. "NOT JUST A WOMEN’S ISSUE: HOW MALE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THEIR DEVELOPMENT AS SOCIAL JUSTICE ALLIES FOR PREVENTING MEN’S VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN." UKnowledge, 2014. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/edp_etds/20.

Full text
Abstract:
Men’s violence against women includes acquaintance rape, intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and partner stalking and occurs at particularly high rates on college campuses (Fisher, Cullen, & Turner, 2000). Although men are increasingly becoming involved in efforts to prevent these forms of violence, little is known about their motivation and the processes that lead to their involvement. The purpose of this project was to examine how undergraduate male students become social justice allies involved in preventing men’s violence against women. The theoretical frameworks of this study included transformative learning theory (Mezirow, 1997, 2000) and feminist theory (Worell & Remer, 2003). Data were generated from six male social justice ally exemplars nominated for their sustained involvement in prevention work. Eligible and interested participants completed two individual interviews, demographic forms, Social Locations Worksheets (Worell & Remer, 2003), and male social justice ally development timelines. The qualitative data were analyzed using constructivist grounded theory (Charmaz, 2006) by the author and three peer debriefers. Findings provide an initial framework for conceptualizing male social justice ally development, including predisposing factors and shifts in perspective that were critical to their antiviolence work and factors that sustained their involvement. Participants also described integrating their social justice ally work into their identity and connecting with other forms of social activism. These themes provide a framework for understanding how men become invested in preventing men’s violence against women as undergraduate students and implications for ways to engage more men in these efforts.

Huyon, Martine. Thesis, Lyon, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018LYSE2112.

Full text
Abstract:
During the last decade, the open innovation model from Henry W. Chesbrough spread within academic, managerial and political spheres. Defined in the early 2000s, this model describes innovation as the result of the opening of firm’s boundaries to capture external resources and accelerate internal innovation (outside-in) on the one hand, and allow internal knowledge find an external use (inside-out) on the other hand.In France, public authorities progressively seized the « open innovation » model through « clustering » policies, like competitiveness clusters. More recently new actors and new spaces dedicated to open innovation are promoting themselves as third-places (coworking spaces, Livinglabs, Fablabs, business incubators, accelerators). Open innovation is spreading and each actor, from private individual to the largest companies, including research labs and universities, is invited to participate in these new innovation and cooperation frames. Even though the model displays a good understanding of the innovation model complexity, with its collective and iterative nature, it is hard to apprehend its impact on the firm’s internal organization, especially from a human resource perspective. Yet these impacts are at the core of the open innovation process, and even its first lever. Open innovation is the result of communities of workers who form and act out of the strict company frame. This thesis is contributing to the fulfillment of the open innovation model through a focus on its impact on the human resource management. Open innovation confronts human resource management of companies to a paradox: how to manage human resources beyond the boundaries of the firm? Thanks to intervention-research carried out within the frame of a CIFRE industrial research agreement, we study human resource management practices, implemented in the context of collaborative innovative projects in competitiveness clusters. Our analyses identify the impacts of open innovation on work organizations, people, skills and staff management. Our work shows the real impact of open innovation on these fields and also proves that firms labor to adapt those human resource management practices in this new context. Our thesis analyses possible arrangements which brings solutions to the new work situations resulting from open innovation

Polo, Claire. Thesis, Lyon 2, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014LYO20022/document.

Abstract:
This thesis aims at describing students’ argumentation in ten « scientific cafés » about drinking water organized in 2011-2012 in Mexico, the USA and France. These events can be characterized as a semi-formal educational context (at school but an extra-curricular activity). Part I begins with a literature review of theoretical backgrounds in interactional linguistics, argumentation studies, and education research. The main research questions and the empirical data used in the study are then presented.Part II reports an analysis of the quality of students’ interactions at the mesoscopic level, while they are working in small groups, based on Mercer’s talk typology (1996). Exploratory talk is evidenced in each of the three countries, and is analyzed with 5 indicators taking into account the specificities of the pedagogical situation. The boundaries between exploratory talk, cumulative talk and disputational talk are discussed. The whole typology is refined, with the presentation of problematic atypical cases, raising the issues of the relevant unit of analysis and the alternation between different types of talk. Part III consists of an analysis of students’ work of building up their arguments at the microscopic level. To do so, they use 3 types of resources: knowledge, general principles (including laws, norms and values), and emotions. An inventory of the knowledge-belief elements and general principles used by the students is presented. An interactional model of the argumentative use of these general principles is then proposed, based on Muntigl and Turnbull’s model of the conversational structure of argumentation (1998). Finally, three case studies describe the role of emotions in students’ argumentation, using Plantin’s conceptual and methodological tools (2011).In the last chapter, Part IV, the ten debates are analyzed and compared at the macroscopic level. They are characterized by their tendency for orientation of the discourse towards disciplinary knowledge fields and their preference for certain cognitive models of water over others. There is also an analysis of how the students build « water » as a discourse object (“objet de discours”), and present it in specific lights (“éclairage”) (Grize, 1990, 1996). This analysis depends notably on the use of textometric tools. Results of individual and group opinion votes during the cafés are also presented. These three sets of results converge to give a global picture of students’ discursive work as the activation and strengthening of typical scenarios of opposing arguments. Each national sub-corpus has a specific, preferred argumentative scenario, which dominates the debates, even though there are alternative minority scenarios coexisting with the dominant scheme. In summary, this thesis offers a coherent model of students’ argumentation, and permits the characterization of such argumentative scenarios at different levels

Morolong, Jessica Jacqueline. "Abortion : young men's constructions of their lived experiences." Diss., 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/14507.

Full text
Abstract:
The Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act (CTOP Act 92 of 1996) is perhaps the most revolutionary piece of legislation internationally ever to have been promulgated to regulate abortion and as such women’s reproductive lives. Abortion research tends to focus on the experiences of women and thus cast abortion as solely a territory that represents women’s reproductive concerns and the power to choose to procreate. While the CTOP Act safeguards women’s right of choice and a form of determination relating to what happens to their bodies, it also fails to recognise or even make pronouncements about the role that a man plays in the choice to terminate a pregnancy as well as how abortion affects a man’s life. This therefore implies that legally, men do not have a stake to influencing the decision to terminate a pregnancy. This qualitative study was undertaken to explore how young unmarried males whose partners have undergone an abortion construct abortion and the meanings that they attach to the experience of abortion. Interviews were conducted and the data was analysed using discourse analysis. Some of the young men knew about the woman’s decision to have an abortion and others did not know. Common findings include a sense of helplessness due to feeling that the decision is ultimately that of the woman, anger for those who did not know about the decision to abort and a lack of forgiveness towards their partners.

Among the many interfaces which humans face on a daily basis, which include a pen, the steering wheel of a car, the workplace in a company and information boards, are clothes, especially clothes in their relationship with fashion and the human body. In order to ensure the continuity of the fashion cycle, fashion design proposes alterations to the pieces of clothing, to give them a novelty appearance and operate at the symbolic level of the product. However, some alterations are made without considering ergonomic criteria of usability and functionality. This study aimed to evaluate, via direct approach to male jeans users, their perception regarding discomfort in relation to the design elements used for adding aesthetic distinction to products. A protocol were applied to 10 (ten) users, in order to assess their perception (Likert scale) of five (5) different products, of which one stood out significantly in several aspects of the evaluation. The products of the fashion category "over" had higher rates of general discomfort of the product.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Sport is a mirror of the culture in which it develops, therefore analyzing the problems and trends in sport we have the opportunity to see a simplified model of society itself. The subject of our study is to understand how much our society is a subject of a gender stereotypes and to which extent contemporary women and men are free to express themselves in any public sphere of their choice. The case with sports officials sheds light on this problem. In the period May 2021 - January 2022, we conducted a study, within the international project Raising the growth and participation of female sports officials in Europe (WINS Project), supported by the Erasmus + Sport program, on the state and attitudes of Bulgarian sports officials, in all sports. We noticed several facts, typical for the modern Bulgarian society: Bulgarian women do not suffer from strong gender stereotypes regarding what is a “male” or a “female” occupation. However, we notice a low level of involvement of women as officials in “men’s sports”, such as football, boxing and taekwondo and very high in “women’s sports”: almost 99% in rhythmic gymnastics. Yet there is a positive trend in terms of women’s involvement in “men’s” sports. There has been an increase in recent years of women officials in sports such as taekwondo, boxing, football, weightlifting, but we are still very far from the desired equality. Bulgarian women occupy a large part of the low-level sport officials’ positions in athletics, but there are few women occupying higher positions and women also have lower salaries. In sports refereeing there are no legal differences that give privileges to one or the other sex, but this “equality” in some cases harms women who, due to motherhood or various ailments, have specific needs and requirements for working hours and work environment.

Abstract:
More and more applications of Augmented Reality (AR) in manufacturing industries are introduced every day and while recent research has shown that one of the more popular applications, high volume assembly instructions, might not offer the best setting for this technology, many other applications exist that do. For assembly, remote guidance or training, rare assemblies, low takt time and high mix production, do still show promise. This article introduces the role of the Augmented Welder, a role utilizing AR technology for the programming of a welding robot. An operator support system in the form of a custom application programmed in Unity and visualized with a pair of Hololens2, connected to an ABB robot through RobotStudio. The robot is equipped with a welding gun dummy. The operator can, through the Hololens2, set safety boundaries, introduce work pieces, place targets in a 3D space, simulate the robot path, send the program to the robot, and activate the physical robot, among other things. We performed a modified pluralistic walkthrough to evaluate the operator support system both with respect to our application but also to search valuable insight to the general use of AR in the use of such applications. Results showed that while the subjects were generally positive towards the support system, several issues were identified and raised by various degrees of severity. The primary issues arose around the navigation and interaction with 2D menus and 3D objects in a 3D Mixed Reality (MR) space. The absence of physics confused the subjects as they could not interact with the virtual objects as they would have with physical objects. The lack of physics simply meant that they didn't act the same. Furthermore the interaction with 2D menus in a 3D space was both reported and observed as being very difficult as the 2D representations probably led to problems with depth perception. The general results of the debriefing indicated that using AR for robot programming was challenging although some of this can be attributed to the fact that this was the participants first use of such a system. The users indicated that the menus were appropriate and that the interaction was intuitive while the navigation within the system was not experienced as natural which confirms the above-mentioned issues with menus disappearing from the line of sight and feedback around generated target points being absent.

Abstract:
Robotics is a good opportunity for developing assistive technologies that could provide greater functionalities to provide for more independent activities of daily living. The Jaco robotic arm is one of these devices. Using standard joystick control requires fine motor skills, which are often lacking in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). A user-centered approach was conducted to design two alternative graphical user interfaces to control the Jaco arm. Firs, five Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) were designed: three based on a software keyboard and two on pie menu concepts. The three software keyboards differ from the visual representation: text buttons, icon buttons, or color organization and are adapted to the Jaco’s control modes. The two pie menus differ according to the interaction technique used to access the second level of the pie menu, i.e. the two techniques designed: pointing and “goal crossing”. Then two groups (one of occupational therapists and another of persons with quadriplegia caused by SCI) were invited to answer a questionnaire to collect their feedback and evaluate their future needs regarding the five GUIs presented. Following the focus group two GUIs were proposed taking into account these issues. The paper will discuss the user-centered approach and the issues that arose at each stage of the design.

Abstract:
The article contrasts and reflects on two ways of beginning architectural learning: through projects that simulate or reproduce the architect's professional practice (Simulators), and through exercises that explore and experiment with various teaching techniques, materials, environments, work processes, and disciplinary issues that familiarize students with the world of architecture in a less obvious way (Devices). It addresses three main issues. First, it questions whether Simulators are the only valid way to initiate project learning. Second, it suggests that initial architectural project pedagogy is closely related to experimentation. And third, it argues that the Devices, while not asking students to design buildings, involve the understanding and development of issues and skills fundamental to the practice of architectural design.

Analyzing three Latin American megacities -Bogotá, Mexico City and Santiago de Chile and more contemporary approaches used in the study of sustainability assessment methodology proposed sustainability indicators approach incorporating third generation (G3 °). Build a Metropolitan Urban Sustainability Index (ISUM) including social aspects (grouped under the term of equity), economic (competitiveness), environmental (habitability) and institutional (Governance). The ISUM proved to be reliable and sensitive enough to account for the dynamics of sustainability issues in the metropolis. Its application allows to appreciate differences between the three cities: a greater emphasis on governance and less successful social equity, in the case of Santiago; greater effort on equity and less successful in livability and governance, in Bogota; more balanced but slightly weaker in equity and governance in Mexico City for a relationship.

Abstract:
FEDER, PI17/00246 Buckley, P. Abstract:
As the measurement of public opinion and attitudes toward gender issues has gained increasing attention in gender policy and research, the accurate design, implementation, and analysis of survey data has become paramount. In this paper, we examine the impact of the gender of the interviewer on survey responses in Latin America and the Caribbean, both individually and in the aggregate, using data from the LAPOP surveys (2012-2018). We also present a formal model that illustrates how the gender of the interviewer may influence responses and derive an optimal adjustment in survey design and analysis to account for this bias. Our findings highlight the substantial influence of social norms on gender opinions, revealing that respondents are more likely to overestimate men's abilities in politics relative to women's and to accept domestic violence when interviewed by men rather than women. Two key actions emerge as a corollary: survey firms should always provide the gender of the interviewer in their data, and researchers should adjust for this bias in their analysis. Without implementing these recommended practices, survey data may not accurately reflect what individuals in the region think about gender issues, potentially skewing behaviors and public policy.

Abstract:
Deeply entrenched cultural norms in the LAC society tend to dictate that women should bear the primary responsibility for domestic tasks and caregiving. This social perception results in an unequal distribution of chores, not only within households but also in the broader work environment. This policy brief offers a thorough review of robust academic studies on men's involvement in caregiving and examines specific cases where further research is warranted. It particularly focuses on assessing the effectiveness of various public policies that encourage men's engagement in caregiving at home and in their professional lives, emphasizing the pressing need for a critical approach to this issue through rigorous evaluations and detailed research.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Between 28th June and 7th July, the Danish-German border region will host the fifth edition of Europeada, a football competition for European autochthonous minorities. This will bring together 24 men’s and 9 women’s teams, with the defending champions being South Tyrol and Team Koroška respectively. The main goal behind this blog post is to preview this event. To achieve this, the authors first unpack the importance of sport for minority identities through discussing several historical and contemporary examples, before specifically zooming in on this aspect in the host region. Subsequently, the focus is turned to the event itself with considerations concerning the format, financing, and its place within FUEN’s activities. The text concludes with a reflection on the significance of Europeada for the host region, participating minorities, its main organizer, and broader awareness-raising in relation to minority issues.

Abstract:
This series of briefing sheets, developed by the Population Council, represents a starting point for the application of gender to the family planning (FP) and reproductive health (RH) arena. The information covers five key areas of RH: gender-based abuse, FP and gender issues among adolescents, sexuality and FP, men’s and women’s social and economic responsibilities for childrearing, and the complicated nexus between gender and FP/RH. In so doing, it provides a strong foundation for gender training. This concept was first developed to fulfill a need for gender training within the regional Operations Research/Technical Assistance Projects. To date, two such workshops have been funded by USAID. These activities not only reflect a clear commitment by USAID to the inclusion of gender in all aspects of programmatic planning and implementation but also to the empowerment of women in every phase of the development process. This tool will help guide program planners and policymakers toward making gender equity in FP and RH programs a reality for both women and men.

Abstract:
Abstract:
To increase men’s participation in family planning (FP) and reproductive health (RH) both for their own well-being and as gatekeepers to women’s health, the African Population Policy Research Center and the Population Council’s OR/TA Project II launched a study designed to explore best practices for delivering services to men. The study examined men’s knowledge, perceptions, and concerns about RH issues, including FP, and the social context of their knowledge. In sub-Saharan Africa, FP and reproductive health-care research and interventions place a disproportionate emphasis on women and largely ignore the role of men. As a result, male participation in FP and RH has been low. The study’s goals, as detailed in this document, were to collect information on men’s views and perspectives on RH, including FP, in order to expand services to encompass men as FP users and supportive partners. The study looked at men’s perceptions of FP and their knowledge and attitudes about existing and preferred FP and STD services.

Sexual coercion: Young men's experiences as victims and perpetrators. Population Council, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/pgy22.1008.

Abstract:
Available evidence suggests that a considerable number of young people experience nonconsensual sex across the world, however research has mainly concentrated on the experiences of young girls and their perspectives of perpetrators of violence. Little is known about coercion among young males as victims or perpetrators. Case studies presented at an international consultative meeting in September 2003 in New Delhi, India, challenged the common assumption that only women are victims of violence, and shed light on the experiences of young males as victims of sexual coercion. These case studies also discussed the perspectives of young males as perpetrators of violence against young women. The evidence comes from small-scale studies from Goa, India; Ibadan, Nigeria; Leon, Nicaragua; Mexico City, Mexico; Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and selected settings in Peru and South Africa. The findings therefore are instructive but not representative. Common themes drawn from these diverse studies and key issues are discussed in this brief.

Abstract:
Although lack of male involvement in family planning has been a topic of research and discussion since the early 1980s, during the last five years it has become an important issue for women advocates, researchers, and many international agencies that are committed to reproductive health and gender equality. The large number of articles on this subject and growing number of conferences, research projects, and debates are testimonies to the importance of the issue, both from the programmatic point of view and as a process for bringing about a gender balance in men's and women's reproductive rights and responsibility. This paper addresses the knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and practices of rural males toward various aspects of family formation including reproduction and contraceptive use. The study was undertaken in the rural areas of Agra district, in Uttar Pradesh. To assess the knowledge and attitudes of males, 517 currently married males were interviewed. Out of those interviewed, 317 of their wives were also interviewed. The two sets of data provide an opportunity to compare the attitudes of males and females on issues related to family formation.
