Abstract:
The article examines the poetics of an epitaph “On the Death...ˮ on the example of the work of the same name proposed for analysis by the poem “On the Death of Alexander Druzhinin, January 19, 1864ˮ by Afanasy Fet. The purpose of the analysis is to determine the genre of the poem, which still remains unclear. The novelty of the author's approach is due to the fact that the discovery through analysis of such genre-forming attributes as genesis dating back to the epicedium (a kind of mourning elegy), genre “concept of personality”, burial portrait, the characteristic principle of figurative visualisation, dating of writing, that allows us to reveal the independent genre status of the poem. It is the genetic heredity of the epicidium, around which other considered genre attributes are concentrated, that helps to define the poem “On the Death...ˮ as a special genre form associated with mortal and memorial genres – the epitaph and the poem “In Memoriam...ˮ. Since the set of genre attributes, the composition of which may vary depending on the object of research, is ideally modelling in nature, the method of its application can be used in the future when studying both the genre poem “In Memoriam...ˮ and other lyric genres.

Abstract:
In 1908, the Slovenes celebrated three anniversaries: the 400th anniversary of the Lutheran preacher and founder of the Slovenian language and literature Primož Trubar, the centenary of the outstanding Slovenian national leader Janez Bleiweis, and the 60th anniversary of the reign of Emperor and King Francis Joseph I. Comparative analysis of the attitude of the Slovenes to these three jubilees shows not only the level of development of their national consciousness with its distinguishing features but also the specific manner of modelling their historical memory by their national leaders. The perception of Trubar’s personality was ambiguous; it reflected the conflicts between Liberals and Catholics as well as those between Slovenes and Germans. Bleiweis, despite all his merits, became a figure of minor political and symbolic significance. The celebration of the Emperor’s anniversary, also designed to achieve national goals, revealed the peculiarities of the Slovenes’ intellectual horizons: they identified the concept of the “broader homeland” with the Empire and sought to transform it from German to Slavic.

Abstract:
AbstractThis is a review of thin-body and slender-body theories, with indications of some new applications. Topics discussed include bodies with near-constant surface pressure, subsonic and supersonic aerodynamics, ship hydrodynamics, slender bodies in Stokes flow, slender footings in elastic media, and slender moonpools. Mathematical features of the thin- and slender-body approximations are also discussed, especially nonlocal convolution terms modelling three-dimensionality in the otherwise two-dimensional near field, end effects, and the role of the logarithm of the slenderness ratio. This review was presented by the first author as the IMA Lighthill Memorial Lecture at the British Applied Mathematics Colloquium (BAMC) 2004.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The digitization of cultural heritage is a topic that is currently being addressed by a large number of institutions around the world. Issues related to the digitization of historical objects and monuments focus not only on their protection, but also on the presentation of cultural heritage. These are addressed in memorial institutions, but also in universities, schools and, last but not least, in the public and the private sector. However, digitizing objects can present a number of problems. These range from the selection of objects for digitization, through to the selection of a suitable method or scanner. And then there’s the 3D digitization itself to the final modification of the model and its storage. All of this is even before consideration of the possibility of its publication, so it is understandable that it is a long and difficult path. The whole process often does not go without interfering with the digitization in a specific program designed for 3D modelling and hence the need to re-scan objects or their parts or indeed having to try more digitization methods on the object. Sometimes we can find out that 3D scanning for a given object is not a suitable method and try to solve the situation differently – from a mere photograph to photogrammetry or the use of a special RTI method of digitization. The aim therefore of the article is to describe the basic issues and possibilities of 3D digitization of selected smaller artefacts using the example of the digitization of historical clocks. It will also describe the possibilities of 3D digitization, which can serve not only to protect and save but also promote cultural heritage. Last but not least, the aim is to describe and evaluate the methods, procedures and the directly selected 3D tools intended for 3D digitization, which have proven themselves in scanning a selected collection of clocks, borrowed with the kind permission of the Náchod Museum.

Full text
Abstract:
The problem of ship resistance in ice floe infested waters has been investigated experimentally in the Towing Tank of Memorial University of Newfoundland. Ships and ice have been modelled to simulate the natural condition of ships sailing in waters covered with ice fragments. Ships advancing in waters coveted with ice floes of moderate size, with less than 100% concentration and with no lateral pressure seldom break any ice. The ship and the ice floes have therefore, been treated in this investigation as freely floating rigid bodies. Both the ice floes and the ship have, therefore been modelled in accordance with Froude principles. The ice cover was modelled using blocks of paraffin wax spread over the water surface. Slabs of wax were cut into small blocks having thickness and size in accordance with the required geometrical modelling scale. Wax blocks were spread over the water surface according to the required ice cover concentration. Ship models were towed in the tank at different speeds. The model resistance for each run was measured and recorded. Results obtained from model testing experiments are presented in this paper. The results cover a number of ship model runs at different ship speeds, and for a variety of ice cover conditions. The results have been compared with ice floe resistance data available in the literature.

Abstract:
Consideration is given to a dispatching system, where jobs, arriving in batches, cannot be stored and thus must be immediately routed to single-server FIFO queues operating in parallel. The dispatcher can memorize its routing decisions but at any time instant does not have any system's state information. The only information available is the batch/job size and inter-arrival time distributions, and the servers' service rates. Under these conditions, one is interested in the routing policies which minimize the job's long-run mean response time. The single-parameter routing policy is being proposed which, according to the numerical experiments, outperforms best routing rules known by now for non-observable dispatching systems: probabilistic and deterministic. Both the batch-wise and job-wise assignments are studied. Extension to systems with unreliable servers is also addressed.

Full text
Abstract:
E-waste stands for electronic devices, such as phones, computers, and televisions, that are disposed of when they reach the end of their useful lives. E-waste is becoming one of the most rapidly growing waste streams globally. The production of e-waste is rapidly increasing due to various factors, including the rapid advancement of technology, changing customer preferences, the widespread use of non-repairable parts, and deliberate planned obsolescence during the design of such products to encourage consumers to replace their products more often, boosting sales and profits. E-waste contains precious and rare metals such as gold, silver, copper, indium, and palladium. When these materials are not properly recovered, recycled, and reused, the production of new electronics will require the mining of finite natural resources, leading to environmental damage and the depletion of resources. As of early 2019, Norway has established an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system, which requires producers and importers to finance and ensure proper collection and recycling of end-of-life (EoL) e-waste, resulting in an increase in the e-waste recycling rate to approximately 91% in Norway. However, electronic waste such as mobile phones and computers often goes unrecycled. Currently, 82% of Norwegian households have at least one extra mobile phone that they are not using. People may hesitate to dispose of their electronic waste and tend to stockpile it at home for several reasons. These include feeling emotionally attached to the item due to personal memories, not knowing where or how to dispose of it, being unaware of the potential environmental and health hazards associated with improper disposal and having concerns about the data security and personal information stored on the device. To address these issues, the paper introduces a cutting-edge tracking and tracing platform that features an intuitive user interface for both users and administrators. With the proposed platform, users and administrators can easily access essential information regarding their e-waste disposal. This convenient and efficient system offers a practical solution for tracking e-waste, thereby promoting trust between device owners and the disposal process. Furthermore, the platform incentivizes users by providing them with valuable information regarding their e-waste disposal, creating a positive impact on environmental sustainability.

The future of the metropolis will be to increase in dimension and extension phagocyting territory, or it will be a moment where the things will start to change, in the collective and politic awareness, that it is necessary to absorb the concepts of limits and sustainability? It seems that the global economic turns have already alerted the sensitive minds towards a necessary change of the course of the urban governance. It is not possible to ignore longer, the transformations, sometime very dangerous, in our cities, todays. Rather it is necessary try to addressed them in a time crossing, capable of understanding the importance of the collective memory, attracting the proper engramma to build new anthropological, cultural and social relations. Specifically the paper would like analyze the reality of the city of Delhi, the Indian capital, disclosing the existences, on its body, of some territorial boundaries. Zones where it is possible to find and to recognize tracks of its ancient rural origins made by crafts and agricultural artisan, clay ovens and cultivated lands. This soul of the city, made by memories, knowledges and territorial relations was menaced, on the last years, from the blind wish of expansions of unscrupulous businessman and from decisions not capillary monitored relatively to urban development plans, which have had unpredictable consequences for the territory and for the environment. After the end of the expectations created from the Commonwealth Games, on 2010, the city developed an infrastructural net more quick, promoting the use of the public transports and creating an underground net very efficient, initial assumption to regain its former glory of green city. Over these new infrastructural potentialities also the connective tissues, between area and area and the big zones of urban green, like gardens, parks and forests, they had great potential in themselves to make Delhi one of the most competitive capital of the future. To realize this visions it is necessary to create vocabularies, roads and languages, capable of suggesting the development of new models of urban settlements mainly on the sensitive zones, where it will happen the encounter between urban and rural.
