Abstract:
The aim of the study was to identify and compare the content of chlorophyll and carotene pigments in mountain melick plants (Melica nutans L.) growing in two forest habitats in the Zielonka Forest Landscape Park in the Greater Poland region, which differed in soil properties and moisture. Leaf blades from the middle level of Melica nutans generative shoots were used as analytical material to measure the content of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, β-carotene and total carotenoids. The average (±SD) content of chlorophyll a in the Melica nutans plants growing in the less fertile site (Location I) amounted to 6.67 ± 0.99 mg·g−1 DM. The average content of chlorophyll b in the same plants was 2.44 ± 0.39 mg·g−1 DM. The Melica nutans plants growing in the more fertile site (Location II) had a higher content of chlorophyll a, i.e., 7.76 ± 0.96 mg·g−1 DM, and lower content of chlorophyll b, i.e., 2.36 ± 0.26 mg·g−1 DM. The plants collected from both sites had similar content of β-carotene, i.e., 0.61 ± 0.11 mg·g−1 DM Location I and 0.62 ± 0.07 mg·g−1 DM Location II. The plants growing in the less fertile site (Location I) had significantly higher total carotene content than the plants in the more fertile site (Location II). The content of pigments in the Melica nutans plants was significantly differentiated by the meteorological conditions in the subsequent years of the research. In the first year of the research, the average content of all chlorophyll pigments in the plants was significantly higher than in the second drier year, regardless of the site.

Abstract:
This study investigates the development of early Persian vocabulary in the process of first language acquisition in case of an Iranian child at age 2. The child was named Melica in this paper and her speech was observed for the period of 6 months. The outcomes show that Melica could produce about 150 words and understand many more when she was 2 years old. Also she understood such meanings as “on”, “under”, and “in”. At that age, she mostly produced nouns, which represented more than half of her vocabulary. Observed for a period of six months, Melica showed a gradual development in word as well as in sentence production, though some discrepancies in the use of certain words, such as developmental errors and overextensions, were also reported.

Abstract:
Effect of seed age and fertilisation on the growth and decorative quality of selected ornamental grassesOrnamental grasses have become a popular group of plants for use in landscaping. The aim of the present experiment was to assess the influence of seed age on the germination of ornamental grasses. In the glasshouse experiment, seeds of three grass genera,Melica, PennisetumandStipa, were tested. The seeds came from the Plant Breeding and Acclimatisation Institute in Bydgoszcz. They were harvested in 2005, 2006 and 2007 (so they were three years old, two years old, and one year old, respectively). In all the genera, the youngest seeds showed the highest germination, which varied between 61% (Melica transsilvanica) and 74% (Melica ciliatassp.taurica). The germination process of the oldest seeds (three years old) proceeded at various rates, depending on the species, but the highest ability to germinate was observed inPennisetum flaccidum(39%) andStipa tenuissima(42%). After germination,Melicasp. andStipasp. plants were repotted and treated with Hydrocote (a slow-release fertiliser). The results obtained indicated that the fertilisation of the grasses significantly increased the height of the plants. Plants ofMelica altissima‘Atropurpurea’ also formed three times more inflorescences than the control plants. The application of the fertiliser had a positive effect on leaf colour (a more intense green) in all of the tested genera.

AbstractThis paper presents information about ten new alien plant species recorded in Lithuania in the period from 1995 to 2014. These species belong to eight families: Cucurbitaceae (Lagenaria siceraria), Juncaceae (Luzula sylvestris), Lamiaceae (Physostegia virginiana, Sideritis montana), Poaceae (Melica altissima, Miscanthus sacchariflorus), Portulacaceae (Claytonia perfoliata), Scrophulariaceae (Digitalis purpurea), Solanaceae (Datura inoxia) and Zygophyllaceae (Tribulus terestris). Three species (Claytonia perfoliata, Sideritis montana and Tribulus terestris) were introduced accidentally, whereas other seven species were introduced deliberately and later escaped from cultivation. One species, Luzula sylvatica, is ascribed to the group of established aliens, whereas other recorded species are treated as casual. Local establishment of Claytonia perfoliata, Digitalis purpurea and Melica altissima is expected, whereas Miscanthus sacchariflorus can become established and even invasive in the future.

Abstract:
2012/2013

Abstract:
This study is about a particular kind of Greek vase pottery, called -Melian?, and has the Orientalizing Greek world as background. Beginning with an special one, the -Melian? Cycladic Apollo´s Amphora, the work is supported by an iconographic view with attention to all paintings in this vase. The Apollo´s Amphora is the axle of this master dissertation. It is an amphora from the second half of 7th century B.C. that is located today in the National Museum of Athens. So, the fundamental qualities that identify the -Melian? pottery is the aim, and not just this, but also her geographical distribution. The main corpus is compound by the Apollo´s Amphora and others Cycladic´s -Melian? vases that were found in the Purification Trench on Rheneia. We are looking for contacts and relations in common with Greece and Mesopotamia that could reflect in the elaboration of paintings, elaboration of images. These images figured actions, show characters, and a kind of epithets. They are gods, heroes, animals, mans and lotus´s flowers, trees, spirals, all together sharing the same space, the same superficie. It\'s about one special vase, and a delimited corpus. We know the limits of what can be sure and what is just an exercise of interpretation. The focus is the -Melian? Apollo´s Amphora. As important as the pottery are the textual references in the Greek literature and poetry like Homer and the others that belong to the main text.

Morphological data are crucial in evolutionary analyses for merging fossils into the tree of life, calibrating dating analyses and for enhancing inference of biological patterns and processes. Morphological phylogenetics is dominated by homoplastic characters, functional and developmental correlations, and also by highly subjective definitions of characters and their states, which in turn can mislead phylogeny reconstruction. A first study assessed the implications of biases among characters in Mesozoic mammals. Then, geometric morphometrics and molecular data were combined to study the systematics of kangaroos and wallabies. Finally, new methodologies using 3D morphometrics and multivariate statistical analyses were developed for phylogenetic inference.

Abstract:
This work deals with the study of limestone and corundum dry milling using attritor-type stirred mill in a batch mode. There were stearin and polyethylene glycol used as surfactants and spherical shaped steel grinding elements used for the experimental part of the work. The main idea was to examine behavior of the selected grinding stock type within a long-term grinding forces exposure in selected conditions of ultrafine dry milling leading up to the submicron area. Characterization of samples was performed by laser granulometry, X-ray powder diffraction analysis, flame atomic absorption spectroscopy, objective color determination and electrokinetic potential measurement. Experimetaly measured data implies that in all cases there was a re-agglomeration of the grinding stock particles occurring, although in different stages of the disintegration process and in mutually various degree. The analysis results denote that a larger erosion of the crystal structures with the associated increase of the amorphous phase in the submicron particle size took place in the grinding stock.

Dva izolata verovatno pripadaju vrsti Gluconobacter oxydans,a treći vrsti Gluconacetobacter hansenii.
The aim of this study was to investigate functional characteristics of akombucha beverage from lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.) tea. Antibacterial activity of kombucha beverages with optimum and higheracidities was tested against bacteria isolated from food and drinking water. The main active component of antibacterial activity was acetic acid, while slight activity of neutralized kombucha and unfermented tea against some test bacteria indicated presence of other antibacterial components. Total phenol concentration in unfermented tea samples, fermentation broths and kombucha beverages from lemon balm and black tea was determined spectrophotometrically whereas qualitative and quantitative concentration of polyphenolic compounds was determined by HPLC method. Antioxidant activity on DPPH and hydroxyl radical in the same samples was determined on an ESR spectrometer. Fermentation broth and kombucha beverage from lemon balm had higher antioxidant activity against both radicals than the samples from black tea. Kombucha beverage from lemon balm with optimum acidity had higher antioxidant activity than unfermented lemon balm tea. The main active components of antioxidant activity were probably rosmarinic acid and quercetin. Antiproliferative activity of lemon balm tea and kombucha was measured by sulforhodamine B colorimetric assay on HeLa (cervix epitheloid carcinoma), HT-29 (colon adenocarcinoma), and MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma) cell lines. By applying concentrations higher than 100 μg/ml, tested samples did not stimulate proliferation of cell lines. The possibility of simultaneous lactic acid and kombucha fermentation was tested as well. When starter cultures and Lactobacillus spp. isolates were applied, the content of Land D- lactic acid increased during fermentation, although lactic acid bacteria (except L. hilgardii isolated from sour dough) showed low resistance to the conditions during fermentation and beverages storage. Acetic acid bacteria isolated from local tea fungus were identified by PCR method. Two isolates might be Gluconobacter oxydans and one - Gluconacetobacter hansenii.

Abstract:
Mestrado em Biologia Molecular e Celular
Medicinal plant species are used to combat diseases from the dawn of civilization. Melia azedarach is one of the species most used in traditional medicine due to their several medicinal properties, especially, antioxidant properties which, however, may vary with environmental and endogenous factors. Among the various environmental factors that can affect the medicinal properties and the development of plants, water stress (WS) is probably the one that has more impact. It's been reported for several species the enhancement of the ROS-detoxifying enzymes or the biosynthesis and/or regeneration of antioxidant metabolites under WS conditions. Therefore it is of great importance to assess the effects of this stress on the antioxidant capacity of M. azedarach. Therefore, two months old plants of M. azedarach plants were exposed to WS (plants at 20% of field capacity) during 20 days. After this period, plant performance were evaluated through the measurement of physiological and biochemical parameters. WS stress induced stomatal closure, reduced the net CO2 assimilation rate (A) and decreased the CO2 availability in the intercellular spaces of mesophyll cells (Ci). WS also reduced the photosynthetic efficiency of PSII, but did not affect plant growth (dry weight accumulation and plant height). WS increased cell membrane permeability and induced an up regulation of the antioxidant enzymes and also an over production of antioxidant metabolites. The results indicated that M. azedarach could be used in re/afforestation programs for drought prone habitats. Moreover, WS imposition could be a positive strategy to increase the antioxidant capacity of M. azedarach, for example for medicinal uses, without affect severely plant growth.
