Bertrand and Mullainathan (2003) find that managers shielded from the threat of takeovers exert less effort to maximize firm value, consistent with a 'quiet life' hypothesis. I study whether the governance role of financial reporting can mitigate adverse effects arising from managerial preferences for a quiet life. I hypothesize and find evidence that after changes in the mid 1990's to Delaware's takeover protection regime, Delaware firms with higher financial reporting quality (FRQ) have better operating performance and higher capital investment intensity. Furthermore, the above relation between FRQ and performance is stronger for firms operating in less competitive industries, and firms with staggered boards. Overall, the results suggest that financial reporting can help mitigate adverse effects associated with managerial preferences for a quiet life.

This research aims to study the films that form the Elements Trilogy, by the Indo-Canadian director Deepa Mehta. Released between 1996 and 2005, the trilogy is part of the production by the Indian diaspora, that is to say, films without strictly defined national borders. Recurring themes in transnational films will be addressed, such as class, ethnicity, sexuality and the concept behind nations. Our purpose is to understand the power structures in India and its implications on female gender policies in these films. The trilogy comprises Fire (1996), 1947-Earth (1998) and Water (2005) and approaches three moments in Indian history throughout the female subjectivity. Deepa Mehta proposes discussions through the criticism presented in her films regarding the interconnection between the fundamentalism Hinduism and women's role in Indian society and culture. We intend to detect these criticisms as we analyze sequences in the three films, using the following method: observation of the narrative pattern, the themes chosen and the articulation of visual and sound strategies.

Taylor, Marcia Hillary. "A Test of the Co-Alignment Principle in Independent Hotels: A Case Study." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29711.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to understand the types of competitive methods used by independent hotels in their bid to obtain and sustain competitive advantage. The concept of the co-alignment principle, as it relates to the choice of competitive methods and their implementation, was the focus of the research. The study investigated the co-alignment between the elements of the co-alignment principle; strategy choice, firm structure and firm performance. Five hotels in Jamaica and two propositions were used to test the model. The theoretical discussions were based upon the resource-based view literature. The empirical section of the study consisted of in-depth case studies, direct observations, guests' surveys and secondary data of independently owned and operated hotels in Jamaica. Interviews were conducted with general managers (or acting general managers) and other managers at each hotel. The study revealed the importance of co-alignment in hotels and the results indicated that performance was best when there was co-alignment. The results also indicated that the competitive methods cited by managers, as providing the greatest value to the hotels, were not always in line with what guests saw as important to them. Six conclusions were reached, which revealed the actions of managers of independent hotels. Unlike past research that focused on only one element of the co-alignment principle, this study focused on three elements; strategy choice, firm structure, and firm performance. The fourth element, environmental forces, was held constant in this study.

Abstract:

Pretargeted radioimmunotherapy (PRIT) of cancer improves upon conventional radioimmunotherapy (RIT) by decoupling the pharmacokinetics of the targeting agent and the radioisotope. In order to improve upon PRIT, we have considered variables such as treatment setting and methodology, the transport and clearance characteristics of targeting agents, and the radionuclides used for therapy. PRIT has been modeled with the aim of examining the theoretical potential of PRIT under optimal conditions to kill every cell in malignant, avascular micrometastases. A mathematical model of PRIT was developed that combined a two-compartment pharmacokinetic model, antibody binding kinetics, diffusion and catabolism in tumor spheroids, and radiation dosimetry models for alpha- and beta-emitting radionuclides. This model demonstrated that it is theoretically possible to kill every cell in 100 tm radius micrometastases using 9Y- or 213Bi-based PRIT with acceptable toxicity as described. The therapeutic window for dosing radionuclide-carrying hapten was found to be strongly dependent on cell-specific parameters such as antigen concentration, void fraction, and the radiosensitivity parameter a, as well as on targeting agent molecular parameters such as the diffusivity and antigen-binding association rate.
(cont.) Surprisingly, the therapeutic window was insensitive to the radiosensitivity metric a/I, the targeting agent antigen-binding dissociation rate, and all pharmacokinetic parameters. Overall, 213Bi-based PRIT significantly outperformed 9Y-based PRIT in terms of the safe therapeutic time window for radiometal dosing and the degree of cell overkill that could be achieved. An attempt was made to isolate high-affinity scFv or linear peptide binders against the loaded metal chelate Ga-DOTA-biotin. Unfortunately, several different approaches led only to scFvs and linear peptides with at best micromolar affinity for Ga-DOTA-biotin. It is possible that Ga-DOTA-biotin is a difficult target against which to engineer high affinity binders due to the chelate's six-coordinate binding of the gallium ion, which may result in rapid exchange of the carboxyl arms of the chelate in solution. As an alternative approach to targeting agent design, an anti-CEA, anti-fluorescein single-chain bispecific diabody was designed, produced in S. cerevisiae and characterized. The full-length diabody (55 kDa) binds CEA expressed on the surface of colorectal cancer-derived SW1222 cells with a KI of 4.3 ± 2.5 nM, and also binds fluorescein while bound to CEA on the cell surface.
(cont.) Lastly, in order to assist in protein engineering via directed evolution, asymptotically optimal probability estimation was combined with numerical bootstrapping and non-linear curve fitting to make accurate predictions of the actual underlying diversities of populations based on small samples of data.

Abstract:
"Bombay is the future of urban civilization on the planet.

Modgill, Arti. "Representation of identity as cultural citizenship practice : positioning Deepa Mehta, Mira Nair, and Gurinder Chadha in the context of postcolonial theory." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2016. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/38418/.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent research on cultural citizenship focuses on issues of identity and belonging in multicultural societies and examines the political, economic, and cultural aspects of community membership in local, national, and transnational groups. Postcolonial research into colonial and neocolonial representations of individual and national cultural identities offers a means of interrogating hegemonic discursive practices of Orientalism, neocolonialism and globalization as they relate to the representation of cultural citizenship. This dissertation positions the representation of Indian cultural identities in the films of Deepa Mehta, Mira Nair, and Gurinder Chadha as practices of cultural citizenship that attempt to reposition the Indian as a local identity in three Western multicultural societies: Canada, the US and the UK. It draws on postcolonial, gender, and literary theory to textually analyze the discourses underlying the filmic representations of marginalized identities by incorporating the theories of Said, Spivak, Mohanty, and Bhabha into a socio-cultural analysis of Indian identity construction. The study utilizes the Lacanian theory of the mirror stage within the canonical writings of postcolonial theorists like hooks, Said, Fanon, and Bhabha, all of whom use Lacan’s work to describe the splitting of the subject from the Other in order to illustrate the production of the derogatory figure of the Indian as inscribed in Orientalist, and Western/ Eurocentric discourses. This figure is precisely that produced in and consumed through Bollywood films. Chapter one offers an analysis of the Lacanian subject formation as a moment in which the spectator of these films views the cinematic representation of the imago of Indian cultural identity—which in these films can be read as sociocultural constructions of local non-alien figures with community memberships in the adopted homelands—as practices of cultural citizenship acquisition affecting both the alienation of the characters and the spectators. My second chapter, by revising the feminist perspectives of Spivak and Mohanty, strategically locates the subject position of these diasporic filmmakers as intellectuals to relate the representation of Indian cultural identity as a cultural practice within the praxis of Western film. In doing so, it aims to unearth the Indian woman in the West as the cousin of the subaltern woman, positioning her vis-à-vis a Western and local identity within a multicultural society. In my exploration of the filmmakers’ practices of cultural citizenship I relate their community membership to the concept of Dharma as a culturally grounded feminist and postcolonial writing back to the subordinate representation of female Indians in their multiple locations. In the third chapter I offer that cultural citizenship as a practice of representation of visible minorities constructed by these filmmakers offers a necessary splintering of the dominant national identities of their multicultural societies that illuminates the hybridity of cultural identities and the plurality of national identities. The filmmakers achieve this revision by positioning the Indian as local of, rather than Other to, multicultural society. The discussion of Canadian multiculturalism in this chapter illustrates that these filmmakers’ representations of plurality in their construction of national identities, splinters the representation of white monocultural national identities prevalent in Western multicultural nations. My thesis contributes to the fields of postcolonial, literary, and cultural theory in the following ways: a) I add to the discussion of Lacan’s subject formation, and the mirroring of the Other and the alienation of the immigrant, by examining the imago as a reflection of identity which can offer spectators a moment of belonging within an adopted homeland as a cultural citizenship practice; b) I add to the debate on cultural citizenship by relating the historic concept of Dharma to my discussion of the intellectual production of female identities and explicate how its counter-narrative challenges to the gender roles of Indian men and women. Ultimately I conclude that the representation of Indian cultural identity by these filmmakers and the representation of the imago as external spectral image of the Indian, immigrant, or visible Other, discloses a discursive strategy of social cohesion in its challenging representation of plural national identities which are local, multiracial, and multicultural.

Abstract:
In many societies in developing countries, women are not given a chance to communicate their issues. The organisation within these societies places men at the top, giving them the opportunity to make all the important decisions. This situation is reflected in the two films which fall under this study, namely, Water and Moolaadé both of which are fictional representations of the oppression of women. In this study, an attempt is made to explain communication struggles in the two films: Water, reflecting Indian society and Moolaadé, reflecting African society. To understand the outcome of these struggles against patriarchy, the study looks at two types of feminism: Indian feminism and African feminism and attempts to find the sense that characters in the film can be understood. The analysis also looks at what the women, who act as feminists in the films have achieved out of their struggles to break the silence and how their voices have influenced or sensitised the silenced majority of women in their societies. Feminist communication theories have been used to analyse the female voice in the films. In the conclusion, I have argued that in both films women have managed to transform their respective societies. However more potential to social transformation are revealed by women depicted in Moolaadé than in Water, where there is very slow pace of change.

Madhuri, Snigdha. "Women’s bodies as sites of signification and contestation : an analysis of Deepa Mehta’s critique of narratives of home, nation and belonging in the elemental trilogy." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/42579.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines Deepa Mehta’s trilogy—Water, Earth, Fire—and the trilogy’s exploration and contestation of colonial, anti-colonial nationalist, and religious ideologies as intersecting with patriarchal norms to enact symbolic and actual violence on the bodies of women. I argue that Mehta’s trilogy foregrounds the ways in which patriarchal nationalism legitimizes violence against women’s bodies and sexualities through different social and cultural practices and discourses which are interconnected. To explain the historical and contemporary contexts of Indian women’s domination and the ways they resist this domination, Mehta’s films unveil the underlying power relations among social forces such as colonialism, anti-colonial reform movements, post-colonial nationalism, religious and patriarchal heteronormative discourses which make women’s domination an acceptable cultural norm. Through an analysis of the experiences of women portrayed in Mehta’s films, I posit that the constructions of the Indian nation, in terms of national culture, tradition and identity, are gendered in specific ways that construct the Indian woman, both symbolically and physically, as a site where nationalist ideology provokes their political liberation, self-representation and agency. Mehta’s films disrupt these historical and contemporary practices, discourses and norms through the depictions of women’s multiple identities, experiences and sexualities. Her works demonstrate the ways in which women constantly resist, contest and negotiate with this domination and violence through their daily activities and narratives.

Lillios, Elainie. "Earth Ascending: A Composition in Three Movements for Female Voice, Electroacoustic Music, and Video." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2000. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc2627/.

Full text
Abstract:
Earth Ascending is a composition in three movements scored for female voice, electroacoustic music, and video. Composed in the Year 2000, Earth Ascending lasts approximately sixteen minutes and was created specifically for live performance in which all three elements combine to create a sonic and visual environment. As such, no single element has greater importance than any other, with each of the three performing forces assuming a foreground role at various times throughout the work. Earth Ascending is defined by a single poem written by contemporary female British poets Jeni Counzyn, Jehanne Mehta, and Cynthia Fuller. The movements are named according to the title of each poem: Earth-Body, Light-Body; Wringcliff Beach; and Pool. The movements are separated in performance by five seconds of silence and black on the video screen. The paper accompanying the score of Earth Ascending is divided into five chapters, each discussing in detail an element central to the composition itself. The Introduction presents background information, general ideas, and approaches undertaken when creating the work. Chapters 1 through 3 investigate in detail the content of the electroacoustic music, voice, and video. Chapter 4 discusses scoring techniques, revealing approaches and methods undertaken to solve issues relating to notation and ways of accurately representing sound, pitch, and rhythm within the context of a mixed media work. Chapter 5 presents information relevant to the live performance of the piece.

Battini, Jean-Marc. "Co-rotational beam elements in instability problems." Doctoral thesis, KTH, Byggkonstruktion, 2002. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-3284.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the work presented in this thesis is to implement co-rotational beam elements and branch-switching procedures in order to analyse elastic and elastoplasticinstability problems. For the 2D beam elements, the co-rotational framework is taken from Crisfield [23]. The main objective is to compare three different local elasto-plastic elements. The 3D co-rotational formulation is based on the work of Pacoste and Eriksson [73],with new items concerning the parameterisation of the finite rotations, the definitionof the local frame, the inclusion of warping effects through the introduction of aseventh nodal degree of freedom and the consideration of rigid links. Differenttypes of local formulations are considered, including or not warping effects. It isshown that at least some degree of non-linearity must be introduced in the localstrain definition in order to obtain correct results for certain classes of problems. Within the present approach any cross-section can be modelled, and particularly, the centroid and shear center are not necessarily coincident.Plasticity is introduced via a von Mises material with isotropic hardening. Numericalintegration over the cross-section is performed. At each integration point, theconstitutive equations are solved by including interaction between the normal andshear stresses. Concerning instabilities, a new numerical method for the direct computation of elasticcritical points is proposed. This is based on a minimal augmentation procedure asdeveloped by Eriksson [32–34]. In elasto-plasticity, a literature survey, mainly concernedwith theoretical aspects is first presented. The objective is to get a completecomprehension of the phenomena and to give a basis for the two branch-switchingprocedures presented in this thesis.A large number of examples are used in order to assess the performances of the elements and the path-following procedures.
