Abstract:

Abstract. The assessment of seismic vulnerability in the Maghreb area is not yet fully investigated, especially considering the important connection between the vulnerability and traditional housing or construction local types. This paper proposes a methodology for the assessment of seismic vulnerability at territorial scale that is calibrated on the specific characteristics of historical settlements in the North of Morocco, mostly made of patio buildings in aggregate. The proposed methodology is structured to be extended and replicated in other similar contexts and is based on the Vulnerability Index approach proposed by the National Group for Earthquake Defence (Gruppo Nazionale per la Difesa dai Terremoti, GNDT). This method was applied to the Medina of Fes, UNESCO World Heritage site, which has suffered severe damages from historical earthquakes. The study allowed the realization of vulnerability and fragility curves, damage scenarios for different seismic intensity and loss scenarios. The proposed methodology was applied a second time to the case study after a simulated structural retrofitting intervention. The results of this second application allowed to validate the guidelines and the reinforcement strategies calibrated on local construction culture. The results of the vulnerability assessment are also presented through maps in the Geographic Information System (GIS) environment.

AbstractA crisis narrative dominates current public discourse about the artisanal sector in Fes, Morocco. Through historical and ethnographic research on Fessi crafts and craftspeople, this article elucidates the rise of the crisis narrative and its relationship to modernity and moral and political economy. Sustained analysis of the dialectical relationship between craftspeople's practical knowledge and public narratives highlights the existence of a “pool” of multiple and cross-cutting storylines from which the artisans draw to depict their profession. These storylines are marked by intertextual reverberations of precolonial Islamic philosophy, colonial Orientalist discourses, modern governance, and liberal and neoliberal economic policies. This article claims that the current, widespread crisis narrative took precedence over other storylines with the arrival of colonialism and modernity in Morocco. Drawing on the analytical framework of colonial modernity, it argues that from the colonial period to the postcolonial present, rulers and ruled alike have produced, maintained, and enhanced the crisis narrative, which is deeply rooted in modernity.

Abstract:

Urban spaces are the end-product of various power deliberations and different urban processes, mainly the top-down and bottom-up. This study investigates the role of the two urban processes in placemaking in historic Arabic-Islamic cities. The investigation demonstrates each urban process's role in creating the major mosque's spatial context in Mecca, Medina, Cairo, Fes, Damascus, and Tripoli of Libya. Aiming to clear some preconceived ideas -strongly affected by the Renaissance’s spectacular values- about Arabic-Islamic urbanism, this article studied major Arab-Islamic cities in qualitative and quantitative approaches. The oldest available cartographic materials are investigated locally concerning political values and changes. Street patterns, space typology, and major mosque spatial context in historic Arabic-Islamic cities are studied, relating each type of urban process to placemaking's symbolic value. Before the end of the 17th century, historic Arabic-Islamic cities adopted a bottom-up process by taking advantage of the community's right to assert the order of their built environment. The top-down process was limited mainly to the architectural level of authoritarian mosques and their context. The ontological freedom and the right to control the place shifted due to exogenous political influences from the public to the authorities. By adopting the Renaissance's urban values, the top-down urban process expanded its domination on architectural and urban levels, shifting the mosque's function from socioeconomic to an artistic value. This adaptation was achieved by promoting the mosque as an artifact and creating a spectacular spatial context.

Abstract:

The stability of iron ascorbate solutions was investigated, under both anaerobic and aerobic conditions, with the Fe2+ and Fe3+ indicators, respectively ferrozine and mimosine, at different pH values. The species present under the differing conditions were investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Mössbauer spectroscopy and by gel-filtration chromatography. At physiological pH (6·8–7·4) iron ascorbate solutions rapidly form mononuclear chelatable Fe3+ species as reflected by indicator studies and EPR. Mössbauer spectroscopy fails to detect any Fe2+ species. EPR studies show a time-dependent decrease in rhombic Fe3+, particularly in oxygenated buffers, consistent with a conversion to polynuclear Fe. O2 uptake studies show that the conversion of Fe2+ to Fe3+ in Fe–ascorbate solutions at pH > 7·0 was accompanied by rapid O2 consumption but preceded depletion of ascorbate. Addition of high concentrations of mannitol (50–200 mM) reduces the O2 consumption and partly stabilizes the rapidly chelatable Fe form. Gel filtration studies show that the oxidation of Fe–ascorbate solutions at pH 7·4 is accompanied by an increase in the apparent relative molecular mass of the Fe, presumably due to Fe polymer formation. These studies indicate the inherent instability of Fe–ascorbate solutions above neutral pH and clearly have important implications in the use of ascorbate in studies of Fe physiology.

Abstract The photolysis of cyflufenamid (CFA) in different organic solvents and water under ultraviolet irradiation was investigated. The photolytic rate constant and photolytic half-life were measured for the different solutions. Factors influencing the photolysis of CFA were investigated, including initial concentration, types of solvent, pH, occurrence of catalyst (TiO2), and environmental substances (Fe3+, Fe2+, NO3−, NO2−). Photolysis of CFA followed first-order kinetics in various systems, and the photolytic rate of CFA decreased with increased initial concentration. Photolytic rates of CFA in different solvents were as follows: n-hexane > methanol > acetonitrile > ultrapure water > ethyl acetate. The pH had a significant effect on the photolysis of CFA, and the photolysis rate reached its peak at pH 9.0. NO2− and TiO2 had positive effects on the photolysis of CFA, while Fe2+ had an adverse effect. NO3− in aqueous solution had no effect on the photolysis of CFA. In addition, the rates of photolysis were accelerated at lower concentrations of Fe3+ (0.5–5 mmol L−1) and decreased at higher concentrations (10 mmol L−1). Moreover, a main photolytic product of CFA was confirmed to be N-cyclopropoxy-2,3-difluoro-6-(trifluoromethyl)benzamide, and cleavage of the amido bond was proposed to be the predicted photolysis pathway in n-hexane.

Objectives:Adsorption characteristics in aqueous solution were investigated to effectively remove heavy metals by the crystallization of FeS and reaction kinetics were analyzed to compare with heavy metal adsorption characteristics of zeolite.Methods:The adsorption characteristics of each media were analyzed using Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and the adsorption reaction kinetics of heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Zn) on zeolite and FeS media were analyzed by a pseudo-first or pseudo-second order reaction kinetics.Results and Discussion:The maximum adsorption capacity of zeolite was highest in Pb, and the adsorption preference was in the order of Pb>Cu>Zn. In the case of FeS media, Cu was found to have a higher adsorption capacity than Pb or Zn, and the adsorption preference was observed to be Cu>Pb>Zn. It was found that the adsorption mechanism is based on chemical adsorption (chemisorption) because adsorption of each heavy metal onto zeolite or FeS media is more suitable for pseudo-second order kinetics.Conclusions:It was found that the removal of heavy metals through FeS media has a different pattern from zeolite, and when comparing the adsorption capacity of each media, it was found that FeS media is more effective for Zn or Cu except Pb.

Hashtag research has established itself as a relevant research field, with various studies having analysed this polysemic collector in crisis and media events. Hashtags are used in social media, most specifically on Twitter. Further, between 2020 and 2021, hashtag studies linked to the COVID-19 pandemic have emerged. Accordingly, this study aimed to analyse the content of tweets during the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (March 4–11, 2020) that included the hashtag #Covid-19 in three different languages: Italian, Spanish, and French. For these analyses, we used emotional text mining. The goal of this study was to reconstruct the representation of the pandemic, of containment measures, and of Europe in tweets. We discussed the prevailing attitude towards Europe in times of crisis.

Abstract Background: In diabetes, protein function is altered by glycation, but the impact on the Fe3+ binding and antioxidant functions of transferrin (Tf) is largely unknown. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of glycation on the distribution of Fe3+ on the two Fe3+-binding sites of Tf. Methods: In vitro glycation of Tf was accomplished by preincubation with glucose for 14 days. Tf was loaded with Fe3+ compounds to achieve theoretical Tf Fe3+ saturations of 32%, 64%, and 96% (monitored by spectrophotometry). Fe3+-Tf isoforms were separated by isoelectric focusing. Results: Fe3+ binding was highest when Tf was incubated with Fe:nitrilotriacetic acid and reached a steady state overnight. Increasing the Fe3+ load led to a shift of isoform profile toward the diferric form (Fe2-Tf): in freshly prepared Tf, Fe2-Tf represented 6%, 30%, and 66% of all isoforms at 32%, 64%, and 96% theoretical Fe3+ saturation, respectively. Fe3+ was equally distributed to the monoferric Tf forms with Fe3+ bound to the amino (Fe1N-Tf) and carboxy termini (Fe1C-Tf). Glycation decreased binding of Fe3+ to Tf (monitored at 450 nm). At low theoretical Fe3+ saturation (32%), glycation increased the mean (SD) proportion of Fe2-Tf: 18 (3)% in the presence of 33.3 mmol/L glucose vs 12 (4)% with 0 mmol/L glucose (P = 0.01). In contrast, at 96% theoretical Fe3+ saturation, Fe2-Tf decreased linearly with increasing glycation (r = 0.97; P = 0.008). Preincubation, independent of glycation, favored the Fe1N-Tf isoform at 64% theoretical Fe3+ saturation [27 (0.7)% vs 23 (1.1)% of the Fe1C-Tf isoform; P = 0.009]. Conclusions: Glycation impairs Fe3+ binding and affects Fe3+-Tf isoform distribution depending on concentration. The diagnostic implications of these results need further elucidation in clinical studies.

The analysis of pseudo-first or pseudo-second order reaction was also attempted to evaluate the rate limiting factor such as molecular diffusion or chemical adsorption on the absorbents.Results and discussion : The adsorption of the heavy metals on the zeolite and FeS media was more suitable for the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, representing that mono-layer absorption on the surface and no interaction between the absorbed solutes. The order of adsorption preference to zeolite was Fe > Cd > Mn, whereas the order of adsorption preference to FeS media was Cd > Fe > Mn. The adsorption kinetics of zeolite and FeS media were more suitable for pseudo-secondary reactions than for pseudo-primary reaction.Conclusions : The absorption capacity of FeS media for the heavy metals (Fe, Cd and Mn) in aqueous solution was higher than that of zeolite. The adsorption pattern was suitable for the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and has kinetic characteristic by chemisorption.

Abstract:

The corrosion rates of low-carbon steel, and 304, 316 and 410/420 stainless steels in simulated geothermal media containing hydrogen sulfide have been measured by means of the polarization resistance technique. Good agreement was found between weight-loss and polarization resistance measurements of the corrosion rate for all the metals tested. Carbon steel formed a non-adherent film of mackinawite (Fe1 + xS). The lack of protection afforded to the steel by the film resulted in an approximately constant corrosion rate. The stainless steels also exhibited corrosion rates that were independent of time. However, the 410 and 420 alloys formed an adherent film consisting mainly of troilite ( FeS ) which provided only limited passivity. In contrast, the 304 and 316 alloys appeared to be essentially protected by a passive film which did not seem to involve an iron sulfide phase. However, all the stainless steels, particularly the 410 and 420 alloys, showed pitting, which indicated that some breakdown of the passive films occurred.

La presente investigación se propone indagar en qué medida ha cambiado el rol de género de unos varones que han crecido y han sido educados en una sociedad supuestamente más igualitaria. Para ello se ha utilizado una metodología cualitativa basada en grupos de discusión y entrevistas semi-estructuradas con adolescentes que se encuentran en los últimos cursos de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria. En general se observa una persistencia del rol masculino patriarcal, con algunas variaciones también destacables, consecuencia de algunos cambios sociales que han transformado las relaciones entre sexos.

En La reproducción el concepto de autoridad pedagógica se refiere a la aceptación sin cuestionamientos de los contenidos impartidos y de la legitimidad del educador. Para Bourdieu y Passeron esta autoridad sería un elemento central para el funcionamiento del sistema escolar. A partir de una investigación cualitativa en una universidad española, indagamos en qué condiciones la autoridad pedagógica se mantiene o debilita. Esta se debilita ante públicos de clases populares en carreras profesionalizantes, que oponen el saber práctico al saber escolar. Pero también se debilita, para todo tipo de estudiantes, con el desarrollo de la carrera moral: a medida que pasan los cursos, la autoridad pedagógica es menor. Ello no impide que los estudiantes estudien: a falta de legitimación intrínseca, las calificaciones y las credenciales imponen una disciplina de trabajo.

Culture medium supplemented with sera is commonly used for the in vitro production (IVP) of livestock embryos. However, serum induced complications including batch variation, the potential risk of virus and mycoplasma contamination and the implication in the large offspring syndrome in domestic animals impels the development of a serum-free culture system. In this study, we investigated whether replacement of fetal bovine serum (FBS) with bovine serum albumin (BSA) in three maturation media, tissue culture medium-199 (TCM-199), a modified synthetic oviduct fluid (mSOF) routinely used in our laboratories and a commercially available SOF-VC (Vitro Cleave, Cook Australia). Harvested oocytes were matured, parthenogenetically activated and in vitro cultured (Day 7) to measure maturation efficiency, embryo development and quality with the aim of developing a simplified and defined culture medium for the in vitro production of bovine embryos. Abattoir derived cumulus oocyte complexes were matured in TCM-199, mSOF and SOF-VC media supplemented with LH and beta-estradiol in the presence of 15% FBS or 0.08% BSA at 39ºC in 5% CO2 in air. Polar body extrusion was assessed twenty-two hour post maturation and selected MII occytes were activated using calcium ionophore/6-dimethylaminopurine and cultured for seven days in SOF medium supplemented with 0.8% BSA. On day seven, blastocyst development was assessed and randomly selected blastocysts were stained to determine inner cell mass (ICM), trophectoderm (TE) and total cell numbers (TCN). Supplementation with either BSA or FCS did not significantly affect the maturation efficiency, blastocyst rates or differential cell numbers within each maturation media tested. However, maturation efficiency and blastocyst rates were significantly lower (P < 0.01) when oocytes were matured in either mSOF or SOF-VC regardless of FBS or BSA supplementation. From this study, we conclude that BSA effectively replaces FCS and TCM-199 is superior to SOF (mSOF or SOF-VC) in terms of oocyte maturation regardless of protein source. Once matured SOF and TCM-199 parthenogenetically blastocysts were equivalent in terms of embryo development and quality.

The study surveyed 273 preschoolers’ mothers who lived in Daegu City and Kyungpook Province. The findings of this study were as follows. First, preschoolers’ smart media addiction tendency mediated the relationship between smart media usage time in regards to cognitive and language development. Second, maternal active mediation and monitoring moderated the relationship between preschoolers’ smart media usage time and smart media addiction tendency. Third, there was a maternal co-use moderated the mediating effect of preschoolers’ smart media addiction tendency on language development. In conclusion, preschoolers’ smart media addition tendency mediated the effect of smart media usage time on cognitive and language development. Among the mediation pathways, the influence of preschoolers’ smart media addiction tendency on language development was moderated by maternal co-use. The findings of this study suggest that maternal guidance should be applied differently depending on preschoolers’ smart media addiction tendency. This study examined preschoolers’ and maternal smart media-related variables on preschoolers’ cognitive and language development in order to provide preliminary data that can be used to explore the maternal guidance on how to use smart media for their preschool children.

Las agresiones sexuales son un fenómeno social, que tiene como principales víctimas a las mujeres y las niñas. El modo en que los agentes del sistema judicial, como parte de la sociedad, perciben y valoran estos delitos está influido por una serie de mitos y creencias colectivos. Este artículo presenta los resultados de un estudio de caso, que analiza el mito de la violación real a partir de las sentencias penales de la Audiencia Provincial de Madrid dictadas por delitos de agresión sexual entre 2016 y 2018. A partir de un análisis de contenido con enfoque cuantitativo, se examina en qué medida las características de los hechos juzgados coinciden con las del mito, y cómo éste puede influir en el fallo. Las conclusiones muestran que, aunque el patrón que describe el mito de la violación real no se cumple, sin embargo, algunas de sus características siguen influyendo en las decisiones judiciales.

Con este fin, se analizaron encuestas patrimoniales de los hogares realizadas en dos épocas muy alejadas en el tiempo y en cuatro países muy diferentes en cuanto a sus estructuras socioeconómicas y a sus sistemas financieros (España, Francia, Reino Unido y Estados Unidos de América). El análisis comparativo muestra que, en todos los casos, la cantidad media de depósitos líquidos es mayor para los hogares más pobres de lo que podrían sugerir los modelos económicos usuales, lo que lleva a cuestionar la relevancia de estos modelos para entender su situación y la racionalidad de su comportamiento.

La sociedad española ha sido testigo de profundas transformaciones en las trayectorias familiares que han seguido distintas generaciones. Las dos primeras décadas del siglo XXI se han caracterizado por la importancia decreciente del matrimonio, el notable aumento de la convivencia y de los nacimientos al margen del matrimonio, y una fecundidad muy baja asociada en buena medida al retraso del primer hijo. La mayoría de los estudios previos han abordado estos cambios en el comportamiento demográfico poniendo el foco en condiciones estructurales. Este trabajo explora, comparando dos olas de la Encuesta Social Europea (2006/07 y 2018/19), si en paralelo se ha producido una transformación de valores respecto a el calendario y las secuencias de formación familiar. Los resultados confirman una flexibilización de las normas relacionadas con la edad ideal para la cohabitación, el matrimonio y el nacimiento del primer hijo, así como una mayor aceptación social de decisiones reproductivas y de convivencia no tradicionales. Los cambios son particularmente evidentes entre las mujeres de las generaciones más jóvenes.

Abstract Whilst many studies focus on human-to-media interactions, this paper turns to how a multimodal medium contributes to human-to-human interaction. By bringing together both radical embodied cognitive science (Chemero 2009) and dialogism (Linell 2009), the paper develops an anti-representationalist approach to the concept of social presence. We use an exploratory study of close friendships that maintain their interaction through the use of the mobile instant messaging service WhatsApp. In so doing, we describe texting as language-activity where people engage with each other by using resources from body, environment, and brain. Our work represents a major departure from previous studies of mobile interaction in adopting an embodied view of language and cognition. By so doing, we show how parties create anticipatory routines that enable them to ‘hear’ and ‘see’ their interlocutor. The paper’s main contribution is to draw attention to this kind of heightened social presence that we choose to call “co-imagining”.

We analyse how ESG scores affect future returns when environmental issues receive higher media coverage. Investors might take environmental aspects into account if they are confronted with the issue of global warming more frequently in the press. We assess the prevalence of environmental issues in the media with a machine learning-based Structural Topic Modelling (STM) methodology, using a news archive published in the USA. Running Fama-MacBeth regressions, we find that in periods when the media actively report on environmental issues, ESG scores have a significant negative impact on future returns, whereas, in months when fewer such articles are published, investors do not take sustainability measures into account, and ESG scores have no explanatory power.

Este trabajo analiza en qué medida la ideología ha influido en la confianza de las élites políticas hacia las fuerzas armadas latinoamericanas entre 1994 y 2018. Durante este periodo, que la literatura ha asociado con tres ciclos políticos, las fuerzas armadas han sido una de las instituciones mejor valoradas tanto por la élite representativa como por la ciudadanía. Analizamos la relación entre las valoraciones de las élites políticas hacia los militares de 16 parlamentos de la región, profundizando en las dinámicas de convergencia y polarización ideológica a lo largo de este periodo y particularmente durante los gobiernos de la nueva izquierda. Nuestro análisis de una serie de encuestas a más de 7,500 parlamentarios muestra diferencias significativas por ideología sobre la confianza de la élite en las fuerzas armadas en la mayoría de los países, pero también dinámicas temporales divergentes entre países. Mientras que, en países como Brasil, Chile o Uruguay, la llegada de una izquierda moderada propició un proceso de convergencia ideológica hacia mayores niveles de confianza en los militares, en Venezuela, Nicaragua o Bolivia la llegada de una izquierda radical produjo un aumento de polarización ideológica en torno a los militares entre la élite parlamentaria.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of browse tree leaves meals on growth performance and parasite load of naturally parasitized yearling goats. Thirty-six Arsi-Bale yearling bucks which were naturally parasitized with helminths were randomly allocated to one of the following feeding treatments; T1 = Chloris gayana grass hay ad lib + 100g concentrate, T2 = T1 + dried 100g of Acacia tortilis leaves, T3 = T1 + dried 100g of Acacia seyal leaves, T4 = T1 + dried 100g of Acacia senegal leaves, T5 = T1 + dried 100g of Millettia ferruginea leaves and T6 = T1 + dried 100g of Vernonia amygadalina leaves. Goats were fed on corresponding diets for 70 days. Fecal egg count and body weight changes were recorded every 14 days. Higher feed conversion efficiency was observed in goats supplemented with dried browse tree leaves of Acacia seyal (T3), Millettia ferruginea (T5), and Vernonia amygadalina (T6). All supplemented goats had significantly (p<0.05) lower fecal egg count (FEC) at day 70 and grew significantly (p<0.05) faster than the control group. Goats supplemented with dried browse tree leaves of Acacia seyal, Millettia ferruginea, and Vernonia amygadalina grew faster than goats supplemented with other dried browse tree leaves. A rapid and significant reduction of FEC was observed in goats supplemented with Millettia ferruginea starting from day 14 and the lowest (p<0.05) value was attained at day 70 after treatment. Similarly, goats supplemented with Vernonia amygadalina showed an accelerated reduction of FEC starting from day 28 and attained the lowest (p<0.05) value at day 70 after treatment. Goats supplemented with Millettia ferruginea (T5) and Vernonia amygadalina (T6) had the lowest (p<0.05) FEC at all times after supplementation and grew faster than the other groups. The rapid and accelerated reduction of FECs and fastest growth rate observed in goats supplemented with Millettia ferruginea and Vernonia amygadalina indicated that these browse tree leaves could be effective to control helminths parasite and improve the growth performance of parasitized goats.

For the removal of iron from groundwater, aeration followed with rapid (sand) filtration is frequently applied. Iron removal in this process is achieved through oxidation of Fe2 + in aqueous solution followed by floc formation as well as adsorption of Fe2 + onto the filter media. The rate of oxidation of the adsorbed Fe2 + on the filter media plays an important role in this removal process. This study focuses on investigating the effect of pH on the rate of oxidation of adsorbed Fe2 + . Fe2 + has been adsorbed, under anoxic conditions, on iron oxide coated sand (IOCS) in a short filter column and subsequently oxidized by feeding the column with aerated water. Ferrous ions adsorbed at pH 5, 6, 7 and 8 demonstrated consumption of oxygen, when aerated water was fed into the column. The oxygen uptake at pH 7 and 8 was faster than at pH 5 and 6. However the difference was less pronounced than expected. The difference is attributed to the pH buffering effect of the IOCS. At feedwater pH 5, 6 and 7 the pH in the effluent was higher than in the influent, while a pH drop should occur because of oxidation of adsorbed Fe2 + . At pH 8, the pH dropped. These phenomena are attributed to the presence of calcium and /or ferrous carbonate in IOCS.

Background: Functional electrical stimulation (FES) during rowing has substantial effects on cardiovascular health in individuals with spinal cord injuries. Currently, manual stimulation control where stimulation is operated by rowers is mostly utilized. However, it takes time to obtain the skill to initiate FES at the optimal timing. The purpose of this study was to develop a coaching system that helps rowers to initiate FES at the optimal timing. Methods: The optimal range for FES application was identified based on the electromyography of the left quadriceps in 10 able-bodied individuals (AB). Then, the effects of the coaching system on the timing of button-pressing, power, and work were investigated in 7 AB. Results: Vastus lateralis (VL) activation began consistently before the seat reached the anterior-most position. Therefore, seat position at the onset of VL was used as the variable to control the switch timing in the coaching system. The results revealed significantly higher power and work outputs in the coaching than the no-coaching condition (median power coaching: 19.10 W, power no-coaching: 16.48 W, p = 0.031; median work coaching: 109.74 J, work no-coaching: 65.25 J, p = 0.047). Conclusions: The coaching system can provide the optimal timing for FES, resulting in improved performance.

This study aimed to understand what factors the mothers of infants consider to be important when choosing screen media programs for their children, and to investigate whether those features differ according to maternal socio-demographic characteristics (i.e., age, education level, employment status, and family income). The study participants comprised 948 mothers who were the primary caregivers and had at least one child aged 4-6. They were asked to select three of the following aspects as critical criteria for determining if a given screen media program is appropriate for infants: (a) contents suitable to the child’s developmental level, (b) behaviors of characters, (c) appearance of characters, (d) visual aspects of program, (e) duration of screen media program, (f) whether the screen media program includes instructive contents, and (g) whether the program leads to opportunities for conversations among family members and activities with children. Multiple response frequency analysis and multiple response cross-analysis were used to analyze the mothers’ responses. The results revealed that the majority of the mothers reported that ‘contents suitable to the child’s developmental level’ represented the first-ranked criterion for selecting screen media programs for their child, which was followed by ‘behaviors of characters,’ and ‘whether the screen media program includes instructive contents.’ However, such criteria for screen media programs for infants differed according to maternal age, education level, employment status, and family income. These outcomes suggest that different information needs to be provided based on maternal characteristics in order to help mothers determine the quality of screen media programs for their infants.

Data on 1,132 children and their mothers from the 11<sup>th</sup> (2018)Panel Study on Korean Children were used for the study. Data were collected by Academic Stress Scale, Grit Scale-Children, Child-Adolescent Self-reported Executive Function Difficulty Screening Questionnaire, and K-Internet Addiction Scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 23.0 program with Pearson correlation, structural equation model and bootstrapping. The main results were as follows. 1) Children’s academic stress had a negative influence on their grit. 2) Children’s grit had a negative influence on their executive function difficulty and media device addiction. 3) Children’s executive function difficulty had a positive influence on their media device addiction. 4) The relationship between children’s academic stress and media device addiction was mediated by their grit and executive function difficulty. This study is significant in the sense that it found protective factors and risk factors for children’s addiction to media devices. We suggest that children’s grit be improved, and their academic stress and executive function difficulty be reduced to prevent and mediate children’s media device addiction.

The widespread use of heparin is due to its ability to reduce clotting and prevent thrombosis. An additional biological property of heparin is the reduction of blood pressure in rat models. This lowering of blood pressure is endothelin-l dependent and results in cell cytoskeleton reorganization, which suggests a mechanism for vascular relaxation.Endothelial cells (CRL 1998 ATTC) reach confluency within 3 days when fed media 199/10% FCS (Sigma) and incubated at 37°C with 5% CO2 at 80% humidity. This growth medium is replaced with fresh medium containing 0-100 U/ml heparin, and the incubation continued for 24 hours. The cells are removed with 0.25% trypsin and pelleted for 2 minutes in a microfuge. Routine procedures for TEM include fixation in 2% buffered glutaraldehyde followed by 1% aqueous OsO4, dehydration in a graded series of acetones, and embedding in Medcast (Pella).

Banana and plantain are among the foremost staple food crops providing food and livelihood to over 500 million people in tropical countries. Despite the importance, their production is hampered due to several biotic and abiotic stresses. Plant tissue culture techniques such as somatic embryogenesis and genetic transformation offer a valuable tool for genetic improvement. Identification and quantification of phytochemicals found in banana and plantain are essential in optimizing in vitro activities for crop improvement. Total antioxidants, phenolics, flavonoids, and tannins were quantified in various explants obtained from the field, as well as in vitro plants of banana and plantain cultivars. The result showed genotypic variation in the phytochemicals of selected cultivars. The embryogenic cell suspensions were developed for three farmer-preferred plantain cultivars, Agbagba, Obino l’Ewai, and Orishele, using different MS and B5-based culture media. Both culture media supported the development of friable embryogenic calli (FEC), while MS culture media supported the proliferation of fine cell suspension in liquid culture media. The percentage of FEC generated for Agbagba, Obino l’Ewai, and Orishele were 22 ± 24%, 13 ± 28%, and 9 ± 16%, respectively. Cell suspensions produced from FECs were successfully transformed by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation with reporter gene constructs and regenerated into whole plants.

Abstract:

This study examined the longitudinal effects of media usage by early school-age children and of maternal parenting stress on children’s school adjustment. The study focused on the mediating effect of executive function difficulty. Longitudinal data to examine the hypothetical model were drawn from the eighth (2015) through tenth (2017) waves of the Panel Study of Korean Children (PSKC) collected by the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education (KICCE). A total of 581 children (293 boys and 288 girls) and their mothers were included. Confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation model, and bootstrapping analysis were applied using SPSS 25.0 and Amos 26.0. The results are as follows. First, no significant correlation was found between early school-age children’s media usage and maternal parenting stress. Second, neither media usage by early school-age children nor maternal parenting stress were found to directly affect children’s school adjustment. Third, media usage by early school-age children and maternal parenting stress were shown to indirectly affect children’s school adjustment via executive function difficulties. In other words, higher levels of media usage by early school-age children and maternal parenting stress during the first grade lead to greater executive function difficulties after a year, which, in turn, lead to a lower level of school adjustment in the third grade. This study indicates the need to develop practical support for the psychological wellbeing of mothers while they are performing their role as a parent and for children in maintaining suitable levels of media usage during early childhood.

Abstract:

Fertilizers in different nitrogen forms (calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN), urea, ammonium sulfate (AS), and ammonium nitrate (AN)) and their doses (50, 100, and 150) for beetroot (BT) (Beta vulgarisL. var.conditivaAlef.) and the antioxidant and antiradical activities in the lyophilized water and alcohol extracts of BT were evaluated. In order to evaluate antioxidant and radical removing activities of BT roots, total phenolic compound amount assignment, total flavonoids amount assignment, method of Fe3+-Fe2+reduction activity using ferric cyanate reduction, cupric ions (Cu2+) reducing capacity with CUPRAC method, Fe3+reducing capacity according to FRAP method, ferrous ions (Fe2+) chelating activity, superoxide anion radical (O2•-) removing activity, and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS•+) radical removing activity were determined. In the study, BHA andα-tocopherol were used as standard antioxidants. It was determined that water and alcohol extracts obtained from BT roots indicated reduction activities, effectively. In addition, it was also determined that these reduction activities were indicated in most BT roots grown in fertilizer media at lower percentage and that they had higher antioxidative level than that of standard antioxidants.

Abstract:

Studies of schizophrenia at drug-naive state and on antipsychotic medication have reported a number of regions of gray-matter (GM) abnormalities but the reports have been inconsistent. The aim of this study was to conduct multimodal meta-analysis to compare the cross-sectional voxel-based morphometry studies of brain GM in antipsychotic-naive first-episode schizophrenia (AN-FES) and those with antipsychotic treatment within 1 year (AT-FES) to determine the similarities and differences in these groups. We conducted two separate meta-analyses containing 24 studies with a sample size of 801 patients and 957 healthy controls. A multimodal meta-analysis method was used to compare the findings between AN-FES and AT-FES. Meta-regression analyses were done to determine the influence of different variables including age, duration of illness, and positive and negative symptom scores. Finally, jack-knife analyses were done to test the robustness of the results. AN-FES and AT-FES showed common patterns of GM abnormalities in frontal (gyrus rectus), superior temporal, left hippocampal and insular cortex. GM in the left supramarginal gyrus and left middle temporal gyrus were found to be increased in AN-FES but decreased in AT-FES, whereas left median cingulate/paracingulate gyri and right hippocampus GM was decreased in AN-FES but increased in AT-FES. Findings suggest that both AN-FES and AT-FES share frontal, temporal and insular regions as common anatomical regions to be affected indicating these to be the primary regions of GM abnormalities in both groups.

This study examined the longitudinal effect of preschool children’s media exposure and maternal depression on first-grade children’s school adjustment and the mediating effect of attention problem. Longitudinal data from the Panel Study of Korean Children (PSKC) collected by the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education (KICCE) was used to examine this hypothetical model. The subjects of the study included 2,150 children (1,091 boys and 1,059 girls) and their mothers across 2013 (5 yrs.) through 2015 (7 yrs.). The Structural Equation Model (SEM) was estimated using SPSS 25.0 and Amos 25. The results of this study were as follows. First, higher level of preschool children’s media exposure and maternal depression were related to higher attention problems after a year and lower level of children’s school adjustment during first-grade. Second, preschool children’s media exposure and maternal depression had an indirect effect on first-grade children’s school adjustment via attention problem. The results of this study will provide supporting evidence to many educators and parents for the implementation of effective practices for first-grade children to enhance their school adjustment. Furthermore, this study emphasizes the importance of maternal psychological wellbeing and the risk of indiscriminate media exposure during early childhood on first-grade’s school adjustment.
