Abstract:

Theatrical practice in England in the medieval period was intimately connected to the life style and social condition of the people. The main form of the medieval drama was religious and they were popularly known as the mysterious plays, miracle plays and morality plays – mostly portrayed biblical story or account of the life of a saint or the dramatization of the abstract states. During the later part of the same medieval period, Sankardeva – the great preacher of Vaisnavism in Assam – had composed religious and moral plays known as Ankiya Nat (one-act play) based on the epics or the Puranas. The main purpose of these plays was to instil into the hearts of the audience the message of ‘bhakti’ (loving devotion to God). The present paper is an attempt to explore the similarities of the Ankiya Nats with that of the medieval European dramas. The study shows that the Ankiya plays of Assam and the medieval plays of the West reveal some identical features despite the immense difference of space.

Abstract:

The present study seeks to look for discernible trends in the way settlement patterns took shape in the various sub-regions of Bengal ( c. fourth to thirteenth century), broadly corresponding to the modern Indian state of West Bengal as well as Bangladesh. The sources primarily include the epigraphs issued by various ruling dynasties and the thirteenth-century text by Sandhyākaranandi, the Rāmacaritam. The essay has also made a comparison with the scenario prevailing in Assam. Certain pertinent findings on the occupation of people living in largely the marshy and riverine terrain of Bengal and Assam have also been commented upon. Occupations and settlement patterns both being traditional responses to ecological settings and historical factors, many people living in the marshy lands in Bengal and Assam took to fishing and boatmanship in the period under study. Conspicuous presence of the groups of Kaivarttas (traditionally associated with fishing and boatmanship) in both regions, and individuals having names suffixed with ‘- naukins’ in Assam substantiate this fact. Tentative map(s) prepared on the basis of inscriptions show that rural settlements were both nucleated and single farm kinds, regularly interacted at various levels, and for Assam, the possibility of nucleated form is more than what has been acknowledged by scholars so far.

Abstract:

Every part of India has its own contributions in the field of Sanskrit study. Assam known as Kamartipa in ancient and medieval period also contributed immensely towards the rich treasure of Sanskrit literature. There are various epigraphical and literary evidences which bear testimony of Assam's contributions towards Sanskrit literature. Sanskrit scholars of Assam exhibited there poetic skill in writing various forms of Kavyas. One of the notable contributions of Assam to Sanskrit literature is Safi Jayamafi of Bhavadev Bhagavati. His Safi Jayamafi is a Sanskrit Khandakavya of one hundred elegant verses. Here the poet depicts the glorious history of Kamartipa through the story of Gadapal).iJayamafi. The poet presents the glorious tradition of Kamartipa in a poetic style. The paper makes an attempt to analyze the glory of the land in the light of the Safi Jayamafi.

Abstract:

The Mahā bhā gavata Purāna is a late medieval Śākta text with significant links to Kāmarūpa, the pilgrimage site near Gauhati, Assam. This text's inclusive religious vision emphasizes bhakti and explicitly acknowledges Tantra as a legitimate religious category. Implicitly, the Mahā bhāgavata integrates Tantra and bhakti through narratives that depict Tantric practices and principles while demonstrating their compatibility and even their unity with bhakti. This paper examines the treatment of Tantra in the Mahā bh ā gavata and argues that the text gives voice to a variety of concerns about Tantra at Kāmarūpa in the late medieval period. Further, this text, which has so far received little attention in modern scholarship, challenges definitions of Tantra as primarily or essentially transgressive.

Abstract:

This article looks at the nuances of gender dynamics within Sattra, the neo-Vaishnavite monasteries of Assam, located in the river island Majuli. Established as a part of medieval bhakti movement in Assam, Sattras play a significant role not only in the religious sphere but also in sociopolitical and economic aspects of life. Drawing from historical accounts on Vaishnavism and data collected through ethnographic exploration of Sattras in Majuli, the article looks at the historical representation of women within the Vaishnavite movement and their role within the monastic system in contemporary time. While male monks are endowed with the status of sacred devotees, women’s contribution to neo-Vaishnavism is debased. The article argues that women’s relation to devotion and spirituality within devotional movements is asymmetrical and thereby historical accounts on gendered devotion should be critically examined.

Abstract:

Like all other world religions, Brahmanism and Buddhism, the two prominent religious traditions of India, have histories of development and transformations since their inception. Depending on the socio-economic and political scenario, religions are subject to change, often in their basic beliefs and rituals, and at a certain point of time, the interaction between diverse religious traditions also becomes inevitable. Although opponent by nature in their early philosophies, Buddhism and Brahmanism got entwined at a certain phase of history, when many Buddhist deities and rituals were accommodated within the purview of Brahmanism and vice-versa. In the history of Brahmanical tradition, this interaction is traceable in the narratives of Puranic texts composed during the first millennium years of the Christian Era (ce). For the present study, one such Puranic text: the Kalikapurana, composed in Kamarupa (early Assam) during the early-medieval period, has been taken into account to understand the process of interaction between Brahmanism and Buddhism in the historical context of early Assam. Being primarily Brahmanical religious texts, the Puranas contain traces of Buddhism only in ‘covert’ form: in the form of myth. Focussing on some myths narrated in the Kalikapurana, the present study will discuss the existence of Buddhism in the early-Brahmaputra valley prior to the coming of Brahmanism. It will help us to understand the strategies adopted by the immigrant Brahmins to accommodate the prevailing traits under the purview of Brahmanical Hinduism.

Abstract:

This article examines the cross-cultural influence that worked on the absorption process of the goddess Kāmākhyā (Assam) within the Brahmanic pantheon, through a correlation of textual and historical-religious pieces of evidence. 2 2 This article is an enlarged and revised version of a paper that I presented on 18 September 2015 during the sixth Coffee Break Conference (17–19 September) held at the Italian Institute of Oriental Studies of ‘Sapienza’ University of Rome. In Assam, the cross-cultural interaction, between local tribes and Indo-Aryan speakers, began around 200 BCE–100 CE—when the Vedic culture had already changed from its earlier theological pattern. Therefore, after had been influenced by a long cross-cultural negotiation, the early medieval north-eastern purāṇas transformed the dakṣayajña myth, legitimising the temple of Kāmākhyā on Nīlācala as the greatest śākta pīṭha (seat of power), where the yoni (vulva) of Sat ī was preserved. In this way, the Purāṇas reconnected Nīlācala–Kāmākhyā not only to the sexual symbolism, but also to an ancient cremation ground and its death imaginary–a fact that the systematisation of the yoginī cult (ninth–eleventh century) into the Yoginī Kaula school corroborated. In this cross-cultural context, the early medieval Assamese dynasties emerged tied to the danger of liminal powers—linked to both the heterodox śākta-tantra sects and tribal traditions that were harnessed by the kings through the exoteric and esoteric rituals practised at Kāmākhyā.

Abstract:

Abstract Deep in the forest lies a network of derelict mule tracks connecting Bhutan, Tibet, and India, and those connecting different settlements in Bhutan. The network came to strategic traffic points at bridges and passes. Bridges were especially secured to tax traders and check movements. Dzongs or castles came to be built next to major bridges because these castles could be guarded better by controlling bridges. Access to Bhutan was through snow mountain passes in the north, and from the 18 Duars Bhutan held, through door-like passes from the plains of Assam and Bengal into mountainous Bhutan. Mule tracks were the medieval highways and they were busy with backpack traders, caravans, seasonal human and livestock migrations, and transportation of official loads. Delivering official loads consisting of commodity taxes were a major, sometimes excruciating, obligation of the households. Not only porterage of official loads, people had to work every season to rebuild medieval transport infrastructure. For trading, marts were organized between Bhutanese and Tibetans along northern border areas in summer while marts were held in winter between Bhutanese and Indians along the southern borders. Many villages in south eastern Bhutan moved lock, stock, and barrel to warmer border areas and enjoyed months of winter camping with their Assamese hosts.

“Por disposição da misericórdia divina, foi feito oportunamente que Joana, filha de Deus, filha da França, seja colocada entre inúmeros santos.” Assim começa o filme Joana D’Arc de 1948, dirigido por Victor Fleming. Já no início, o filme estabelece que a história de Joana será baseada na imagem de santa, uma hagiografia. Hagiografia: Biografia de um santo Estudos dos escritos que contam a vida dos santos Figurado Biografia elogiosa que exprime grande reverência pelo retratado, abordando apenas aspectos positivos da sua vida e/ou personalidade (Infopédia – Dicionários Porto Editora) O filme nunca questiona o chamado de Joana, pelo contrário, ele fortifica mais ainda a santidade de Joana, que havia somente 28 anos que havia sido canonizada. O filme é a primeira grande produção colorida sobre Joana, que levava o grande nome de Ingrid Bergman como a protagonista, papel esse do qual ela reprisa após fazer a peça “Joan of Lorraine”, da qual é a base para o filme de Fleming. Mas, quem foi Joana para despertar tanto interesse tanto na igreja católica quanto no cinema? Joana nasceu na aldeia de Domremy na França em 1412, vinda de uma família do povo, do anonimato; anonimato esse do qual ficaria se não fosse suas visões para ajudar a França derrotar a Inglaterra na Guerra dos Cem Anos e seu chamado para coroar Delfim Carlos (Carlos VII) como rei da França, fato esse que conseguiu alcançar por conta de seus esforços nos campos de batalha. Joana passou por muitos percalços para provar que suas visões vinham de Deus e que não era uma bruxa, mas apesar de tudo, o título de bruxa que a levou a sua morte na fogueira em um julgamento muito duvidoso e posteriormente cancelado pela igreja católica (MACEDO, 2002). A história e o heroísmo de Joana ganharam as telas no filme de Fleming no contexto do final da Segunda Guerra, um período muito delicado e de grandes mudanças em todos os setores, a retratação de uma pessoa que batalhou e serviu sua missão, se tornou um exemplo e alguém para trazer identificação (SANTOS, 2014). A história de Joana foi representada nas telas nesse período, apesar de seu fim trágico, se levarmos o sentido religioso, seria até um final considerado agridoce, pois apesar de tudo, mesmo com sua condenação, Joana foi honrada por Deus por ter mantido seus ideais. A história de Joana serviria como uma inspiração para um povo que estava passando por uma guerra (assim como Joana). De acordo com Rosenstone sobre filmes dramáticos históricos (2010, p. 33-34)

Abstract:

A cidade de Canindé, localizada a aproximadamente 120 quilômetros da capital, se tornou referência internacional sob o aspecto da devoção a São Francisco, personagem medieval cuja abrangência chegou ao tempo presente. A devoção advinda com a presença europeia em termos do que a modernidade ocidental, chamou colonização, produziu uma experiência nova, diversa do que era tida como os elementos da fé católica no velho continente. Assim, o novo mundo se tornou palco do intercruzamento de um conjunto de matrizes culturais, que pouco a pouco, foram gestando uma experiência nova, diversa do que era tido como “modelos tradicionais”. Remontando a história da América Portuguesa, os Franciscanos seguiram em travessias diversas, forjando caminhos e espalhando a devoção ao Santo de Assis, que diante das experiências religiosas, reinventam o “santo”, travestido pela toponímia do lugar, assim é São Francisco, agora de Canindé, que suscita o que hoje conhecemos como a cidade, cuja presença do Santuário, a legou a condição de maior experiência franciscana, fora da Europa, tida como berço do franciscanismo. Diferente do que ocorreu em outras unidades do território brasileiro, os franciscanos não se instalaram em termos burocráticos nos domínios cearenses. Num dado momento das ações franciscanas no Ceará, inicia-se a construção de uma capela em devoção ao santo, a margem do rio Canindé, que hoje nomeia a cidade. A historiografia franciscana no Brasil, aliada a forte presença do memorialismo da cidade, apontam para uma série de implicações, que reiteram a ambiência mágica do lugar. Da disputa pelo local em que foi erguida a capela, até a ocorrência de milagres, envolvendo os construtores. Assim ao final do século XVIII, em 1796, é inaugurado o templo de devoção franciscana, e que ao longo do novo século, amplia o alcance dos termos devocionais, que traz implicações nas transformações do espaço, que dão sentido a existência da cidade.

Abstract:

Esse trabalho é fruto de uma pesquisa de mestrado que culminou num Produto Educacional (PE) embasado em estudos que tratam da Aliança entre História da Matemática (HM) e Tecnologias Digitais (TD) via Histórias em Quadrinhos (HQ). Portanto, tem como objetivo apresentar tal Produto e de que forma está ligado a essa Aliança a partir do documento Canon Madusicus de autoria do estudioso islâmico medieval, al-Biruni (973-1048), através do software Pixton, apropriado para produção de HQ. Para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa foram utilizados referenciais de diversas Ciências considerando as transformações vivenciadas, em particular, no âmbito educacional, a fim de possibilitar uma produção de conhecimento coletiva de projetos educacionais focados na compreensão do ensino de matemática e formação de professores. Então, foi aplicada uma abordagem qualitativa com características bibliográfica e documental. A partir do estudo do documento supracitado concluímos que trata de temas, como: teoria geocêntrica de al-Biruni; calendários e cronologia; concepções trigonométricas; geografia astronômica; existência de continentes americanos além dos mares ocidentais; tabela de longitudes e latitudes; menção de lugares indianos; projeções e cartografia; movimento solar; duração do ano solar; as estrelas fixas e seus movimentos; teoria lunar; a distância entre o sol e a Terra; as distâncias e magnitudes das estrelas da Terra; os planetas; os eclipses e o aparecimento de uma nova lua; amanhecer e o pôr do sol e teoria e prática de astrologia. Desses temas, selecionamos o recorte do documento que trata de como al-Biruni elaborou os cálculos para identificar o comprimento do raio da Terra para assim, produzirmos o PE. Nosso PE pertence a uma proposta didática de uma HQ digital que versa sobre a produção do conhecimento referenciado. A intenção é disponibilizar o PE publicamente, principalmente para que os professores levem para sala de aula numa perspectiva de possibilidade de aliança entre HM e TD.

Abstract:

A recitação de imagens é a arte de contar histórias em verso, acompanhada por um acessório visual, como uma pintura em pergaminho ou uma tapeçaria. Numerosas práticas de recitação de imagens eram ativas na Índia, mas sofreram durante a colonização pelos britânicos de várias maneiras. A sutil censura vitoriana do tema do erótico expresso nas narrativas religiosas (que formavam a maior parte do gênero de recitação de imagens), o apagamento da oratura como primitiva, o rebaixamento das práticas de recitação de imagens como arte popular e a divisão entre imagens (objeto e adereços que podem ser exibidos em museus) e recitação (aspectos performativos que não poderiam ser facilmente museificados), enquanto enchia museus europeus com artefatos coloniais, infligiu enormes danos às tradições vivas de recitação de imagens na Índia. Minha pesquisa, conduzida pela prática, busca descolonizar a recitação de imagens para desfazer estes danos. Seguindo o apelo de Walter Mignolo para desvincular-se da hegemonia ocidental, procuro destacar (em vez de noções europeias de beleza e estética) teorias indianas clássicas de afeto (de cerca de 300 d.C.), que podem produzir prazer estético no espectador. Assim, usando a teoria Rasa indiana clássica, bem como a subversão, eu crio narrativas contemporâneas para recitação de imagens usando fatos empíricos de pesquisas científicas (Neurociência, Microbiologia, Fitoquímica e Meteorologia) que são auxiliadas por adereços visuais feitos por amalgamação da estética da pintura em miniatura indiana medieval também como ilustração médica contemporânea. Uma pesquisa conduzida pela prática é o único método para resgatar a prática da recitação de imagens, assim como a prática contemporânea das neo-miniaturas resgatou o gênero das pinturas em miniatura da classificação do kitsch oriental. Ao investir em temas eróticos e oratura, bem como reunir imagem e recitação, espero remover os efeitos adversos da colonização de alguns gêneros de artes indianas. Concretamente, minha prática visa contemporizar a poesia sânscrita erótica clássica, que existe desde 1.000 a.C., compondo poesia erótica que incorpora pesquisa científica e criando composições de imagem e texto, como antes eram encontradas nas miniaturas indianas medievais. A segunda abordagem visa reviver a recitação de imagens usando um arquétipo indiano clássico de uma heroína que sai para encontrar seu amante enfrentando graves perigos e contemporizando-o com a leitura de neurociências. Por meio da prática, descubro minhas memórias corporais que vêm à tona durante a performance; o papel da respiração na voz; como a imagem, o texto, a voz e a performance influenciam uns aos outros iterativamente; e como o efeito é transferido através da performance para o espectador. Por meio da prática, estabeleço um campo mais amplo para os recém-chegados com maior vigor e validade do que, simplesmente, fazer eco a um apelo teórico à descolonização. A uma apresentação da recitação da imagem, será incorporado um vídeo de dez minutos.

Abstract:

“Jeróglificos de Nuestras Postrímerias” é o nome que se dá à série de dois quadros de Juan de Valdés Leal (In Ictu Occuli e Finis Gloriae Mundi), pintados entre os anos de 1670 e 1672. Essa série de quadros é composta de esqueletos, corpos em decomposição e outros elementos macabros que a tornam singular. A data das pinturas em questão está compreendida no dito Barroco Espanhol, movimento que estaria inserido no Siglo de Oro de la pintura espanhola. Essa denominação de “século de ouro” está intimamente relacionada com a revalorização do Barroco espanhol pelos românticos espanhóis do século XIX, que viam no Barroco espanhol, assim como na pintura medieval, uma “genuína expressão artística nacional”. É preciso relativizar o conceito de “genuína expressão artística nacional”, uma vez que esta expressão minimiza as influências externas, principalmente da Itália e de Flandres, que esse período sofreu para o fortalecimento de uma identidade nacional. Mas também não queremos atribuir à pintura barroca espanhola a alcunha de simples cópias italianas e do país de Flandres, visto que as obras espanholas não seguiam indiscriminadamente os modelos italianos e dos países baixos, mas sim escolhiam manter certas características enquanto rejeitavam outras completamente para dar forma a uma nova síntese estilística.

Abstract:

O ato de ensinar constitui a essência do ser humano. Mesmo que indiretamente, estamos sempre ensinando; somos observados e imitados. Durante muito tempo, a escola que chamamos de tradicional trabalhou com um currículo nos moldes medievais que já trazia o que deveria ser estudado para a ascensão social. Aliás, esta é a finalidade do ensino que perpassa no consciente imaginário dos nossos dias. No entanto, o ensino deve estar posto em favor do estudante, ou seja, que o aprendiz encontre significado naquilo que estuda a fim de colocá-lo em suas realidades diárias, com a finalidade de uma transformação social, a melhor qualidade de vida do planeta e, consequentemente, do homem. Portanto, ensino e aprendizagem caminham juntos, pois se não fosse assim, o ato de ensinar seria estéril.
