Abstract:
Objectives: To determine the frequency of different lip patterns among medical students. Study Design: Cross Sectional Study (Descriptive) Setting and Duration of Study: Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, QAMC/ Bahawal Victoria Hospital, Bahawalpur. From 15th January 2018 to 14 March 2018 Materials and Methods: Total 203 of medical students 18-25 years of age of and both genders was selected. Subjects with any lip deformity or allergic episode with lip stick were excluded. After application of a dark colored, non-glossy, less moist lipstick on lips, lip-prints were obtained on a cellophane tape and then pasted on A4 paper. Results: Out of these 203 subjects, 110 (54.19%) were men and 93 (45.81%) were women with M:F ratio of 1.2:1. In this study, Type I (26.11%) and Type II (20.69%) was the utmost communal lip patterns, trailed by Type-I’ (18.72%), Type III (18.23%), Type IV (10.34%) and Type V (5.91%). Conclusion: This study concluded that cheiloscopy and its pattern recognition in varying circumstances provide valuable information with regards to identification of an individual. Abstract:
Objectives. To compare the knowledge of Australian dietary recommendations to the dietary practices of first-year medical students. Design. Over a period of four years, anonymous online surveys were completed by medical students attending a first-year nutrition lecture. Background. There is little information on the nutritional knowledge and dietary practices of medical students. Setting. First-year postgraduate university medical students, Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Participants. Between the years 2012 and 2016, 32%–61% of first-year students completed the survey. Phenomenon of Interest. Student’s knowledge of dietary guidelines and related practices. Analysis. The frequency of response was assessed across the different year cohorts using descriptive statistics. Results. Between 59% and 93% of first-year students correctly identified the recommended daily servings for fruit, and between 61% and 84% knew the vegetable recommendations. In contrast only 40%–46% met the guidelines for fruit and 12%–19% met the guidelines for vegetables. Conclusions and Implications. Discrepancies between students’ nutrition knowledge and behavior can provide learning opportunities. With low rates of fruit and vegetable consumption in medical students, increased awareness of links between nutrition and health, together with encouragement to make behavioral changes, may increase the skills of graduates to support patients in improving dietary intake.

Abstract:
Introduction: The development of an electronic ENT application may improve medical students’ and junior doctors’ confidence in approaching common ENT scenarios if they have had little prior experience in this surgical subspeciality. Methods: A cohort of medical students and junior doctors based at Blackpool Victoria Hospital were asked to rate their confidence in approaching five common ENT scenarios before and after being granted access to a locally-developed ENT application. Results: Every participant showed an increase in their confidence score in dealing with each ENT scenario following access to the application. Junior doctors’ confidence scores showed an overall average confidence increase of 148% and medical students demonstrated an increase of 124%. Discussion: ENT smartphone applications have been shown to be successful in increasing medical students’ and junior doctors’ confidence in approaching common ENT clinical scenarios. The provision of such a resource for surgical subspecialties promotes a further step towards a paperless NHS as well as a standardised way of approaching patient care.

Background: With the increased development of distributed sites for medical education across Canada, it is imperative we ensure that the quality of education is comparable between the different campuses. Our objective was to assess medical student experience and comfort with common urologic clinical encounters and to determine whether any differences exist between the distributed education sites at the University of British Columbia (UBC).Methods: Questionnaires assessing urologic education were delivered simultaneously to all final-year UBC medical students attending campuses in Vancouver, Victoria and Prince George. Results were analyzed using descriptive statistics.Results: Overall, 55.8% of students felt their exposure to urology was adequate in the medical curriculum; learners in the Northern Program (Prince George) ranked their clinical and didactic experiences significantly higher. Areas requiring improvement include teaching of the male genitourinary exam, digital rectal exam and sexual history, in which learners rated teaching “good/outstanding” in only 18.2%, 47.7% and 43.2% of cases, respectively. Overall, students were most comfortable with the following clinical encounters: urinary tract infection, nephrolithiasis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, hematuria, incontinence and prostate cancer. Few differences in student experience or comfort were noted related to campus site, gender or urology clerkship exposure.Conclusion: A significant minority of learners perceived that theyhad inadequate exposure to urology in the undergraduate curriculum. Experience in urology was comparable across the distributed sites and was congruent with teaching objectives. Students were comfortable with the clinical scenarios deemed most important in the literature. Learners in the Northern Program were significantly more satisfied with their urologic teaching, which potentially highlights the advantages of learning in a smaller academic setting.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has changed everything about the world we live in, in 2020. It is having obvious impacts on the way we teach and the way we learn. In Victoria, Monash Rural Health Bendigo is one of the few places that has managed to continue clinical health education and clinical placements throughout 2020 - albeit in modified forms. Monash Rural Health Bendigo provides clinical years education to a cohort of between 100 and 130 Third, Fourth- and Fifth-Year Monash Medical students in a rural setting. It is largely an 'apprentice based' model of learning where the students get access to rural clinical sites and rural health experts as well as a state-of-the-art clinical skills and simulation lab to undertake the clinical years of their medical degree. But what happens to this kind of model during a pandemic induced shut down such as was experienced in 2020? This paper explores the challenges but also opportunities for students pursuing a rural health pathway in the midst of a public health emergency. It examines the findings of the COVID-19 Educational Evaluation conducted in Bendigo throughout 2020 and reveals the advantages but also the unanticipated consequences of students choosing to study rurally in the midst of a global pandemic.

The corona virus pandemic belongs to family of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) which cause difficulty in breathing. Corona virus originate from china in December 2019. The present study was conducted in Punjab, and Pakistan. The sample of 187 respondents was selected for data collection. Questionnaire was used for data collection. The data were collected from University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Quaid-e-Azam Medical College/Bahawal Victoria Hospital Bahawalpur and GC University for women Madina Town, Faisalabad. The collected data were analyzed by using computer software i.e Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). It was concluded from the present study that Covid-19 had badly affected the educational activities of the students. The students were not getting effective education due to poor availability of internet services and lack of trainings regarding online learning. ObjectivesThe Australian Ageing Semantic Differential (AASD) survey was developed to quantify medical student attitudes towards older people. The purpose of this study is to examine psychometric properties of the survey and confirm its factor structure of four composites.DesignA cross-sectional study.SettingThree medical schools in three Australian states: Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia.ParticipantsThird-year or fourth-year medical students (n=188, response rate=79%).Outcome measuresIn the previous AASD study, exploratory factor analysis supported a four-factor model consisting of ‘Instrumentality’ (I), ‘Personal Appeal’ (PA), ‘Experience’ (E) and ‘Sociability’ (S). Congeneric one-factor confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used to examine model fit for factors using a new student sample (n=188).Psychometric properties of survey items and factors.Post-hoc analysis of pooled data from this study and earlier AASD study (n=509).ResultsIndices of fit (Comparative Fit Index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI), root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), standardised root mean square residual (SRMR)) for data to the factor model were: PA adequate fit (CFI=0.94, TLI=0.89, RMSEA=0.11 and SRMR=0.05), I good fit (CFI=0.99, TLI=0.99, RMSEA=0.04 and SRMR=0.03), S good fit (CFI=0.98, TLI=0.95, RMSEA=0.06 and SRMR=0.03) and E excellent fit (CFI=1.0, TLI=1.0, RMSEA=0.00 and SRMR=0.01).The AASD was internally consistent (Cronbach’s alpha=0.84), without difference in mean student scores by institution. Mean AASD score was positive for medical students outside New South Wales (73.2/114).Mean I score for all Australian students was negative, with female respondents’ mean E score significantly higher than their counterparts. A positive correlation between student age and I score was noted.ConclusionsThe AASD is internally consistent and generalisable within Australia, with acceptable structural validity for measuring medical student attitudes towards older people within a four-factor model. Student attitudes were positive globally and within all factors except I. Female students rated older persons E more positively. Older students recorded more positive attitudes towards I of older people.

Botany was part of the broad intellectual territory of one of the University of Melbourne's four foundation chairs. From his appointment in 1854 until his death in 1899, Frederick McCoy was the Professor of Natural Science and, for most of that time, also honorary Director of the Colony of Victoria's National Museum. McCoy gained ideas about botany and botanic gardens and museums while studying and working at the University of Cambridge, where he attended Professor John Stevens Henslow's botany lectures in 1847. With help from Henslow and Victoria's Government Botanist, Ferdinand Mueller, McCoy acquired botanical collections and developed a class (system) garden at the University of Melbourne, where he taught botany to arts and medical students from 1863 until the establishment of the science degree and arrival of the Professor of Biology in 1887 left him only a rarely-taken botanical subject.

Introduction:St. John Ambulance Victoria provides first aid and medical services at a variety of mass gathering events (MGEs) throughout Victoria. Volunteer healthcare professionals and students (termed “volunteers”) form Medical Assistance Teams (MAT) at these MGEs. MAT deployments manage a variety of patient presentations which include critically ill patients. This reduces high acuity patient transfers to the hospital and, where possible, avoid ambulance and hospital utilization.Aim:To determine the effectiveness of interdisciplinary prehospital simulation workshops in preparing volunteers for MAT deployment at MGEs.Methods:A one-day, simulation-based training session within the MAT environment was implemented to introduce volunteers to the management of various scenarios faced at MGEs. All volunteers were provided an orientation to the equipment and setting up MAT deployments at MGEs. Volunteers then participated in interdisciplinary group-based scenarios such as cardiac arrest management, drug intoxication, spinal injuries, agitated patients, and airway management. To determine the effectiveness of this training session, volunteers were invited to participate in a post-training survey, comprising of Likert scores and open-ended responses.Results:Seventeen volunteers attended the training session with 10 (58.8%) completing the post-training survey. Volunteers were satisfied with environment familiarization in the MAT (Average 4.47/5.00) and found the simulation-based training helpful (Average 3.67/4.00). The induction overall was well-received (4.60/5.00) with volunteers feeling more confident in being deployed at MGEs (4.20/5.00).Discussion:The results of the simulation-based training session were positive with volunteers receptive to the need for a training day prior to MAT deployment at MGEs. The simulation session enables volunteers to be comfortable with working in MAT and managing a diverse range of patients at MGEs. This session is likely to improve interdisciplinary communication and teamwork in the MAT. Future research is aimed at following these volunteers after several MAT deployments to improve the training session for future participants.

Objective To date, there are few data on pharmacy-specific placement programs and their impact on students’ work after graduation. The present study evaluated an innovative rural pharmacy placement program targeted at influencing students to work and live in rural areas after graduation. A secondary aim of the study was to explore the students’ intentions to come back and practice in rural areas as a result of their involvement in the rural pharmacy program. Methods A questionnaire was distributed, by hand, to a total of 58 third and fourth (final) year pharmacy students undertaking their rural placement in the Gippsland region, in rural Victoria in 2011 and 2012. Results Fifty-seven responses were returned (response rate = 98%). Students stated that understanding pharmacy practice from a rural perspective, visits to rural health professionals and sites and the attitude of their preceptors were essential to their satisfaction with their rural placements. A significant number of students (72%) intend to seek employment in rural areas if opportunities arise as a result of their increased rural awareness. The key components for a successful rural placement program were described by the surveyed students as social awareness, recognising job opportunities and interprofessional learning. Conclusion The evaluation of the rural placement program revealed that students valued their visits to rural sites and their interaction with other rural health professionals the most. What is known about the topic? Rural undergraduate student programs have been initiated as a result of several Australian government strategies to address shortages in rural health workforce. Subsequently, various rural placement programs have been integral parts of several disciplines, including medicine, dentistry, nursing, occupational therapy and pharmacy among others. To date, there are few data on pharmacy-specific placement programs and their impact on students’ work after graduation What does this paper add? The rural pharmacy program is important in influencing students’ perceptions and interest in a career in rural areas. The key components for a successful rural placement program were described by the surveyed students as social awareness, recognising job opportunities and interprofessional learning. What are the implications for practitioners? Interprofessional learning and collaboration are inevitable due to the shortage of health professionals and the move towards holistic management of patients in healthcare settings. The development of an interprofessional rural education that combines rural medical and pharmacy students together highlights the importance of an interprofessional approach to preparing students to work in rural areas.

Communication skills are essential to the practice of medicine, and are now included in most medical curricula. Training in communication skills requires an experiential approach to teaching and assessment that focuses on mastery of performance. Simulated patients were introduced to the Communication Skills course for third year medical students at The University of Melbourne in 1995. This thesis describes the evaluation from the first two years of their use, and is set within the body of literature regarding this innovative educational method. The fundamental research question was: Did the introduction of simulated patients represent an improvement and enrichment in the teaching of communication skills to third year medical students? There is, however, a paucity of research regarding the osteopath's perception of the integration of factors which govern the choice of treatment techniques. The results of this study indicated surprisingly little difference between experienced practicing osteopaths and osteopathic students in terms of both the factors considered when choosing treatment techniques and the frequency of use of treatment modalities. This suggests that experience is not a major factor in determining treatment choice. This minor thesis was written by a post-graduate student as part of the requirements of the Master of Health Science (Osteopathy) program.

Abstract:
The incidence of musculoskeletal problems amongst instrumental music students in Australia is unknown. This study examined students who play musical instruments and are potentially at risk of developing problems, including pain and injury, related to their play activities. Full-time instrument major students (aged 18 and above, 57 male, 31 female) at the Victoria College of the Arts (VCA) completed the self-administered quantitative "Standardised Nordic Questionnaire for Analysis of Musculoskeletal Symptoms" to ascertain the incidence of musculoskeletal 'trouble' (ache, pain, or discomfort) across nine body regions. These reults were analysed in relation to gender and type of instrument played. 91% of participants (90% female and 91% of males) reported problems at one or more times in at least one region during the previous 12 months. The regions with the highest reports of trouble were the neck (56%), one or both wrists/hands (56%), low back (51%), and the shoulder (47%). The regions of the body with the highest reported levels of problems for males were low back (54%), neck (51%) and wrists/hands (49%). Females reprted problems in the wrists/hands (68%), neck (65%) and shoulders (61%). Certain problems were associated with particular instruments. 100% of double bassists reported low back trouble, while 90% of drummers and 80% of pianists reported wrist/hand problems. Musculoskeletal problems in instrumental music students are common, occurring at similar rates in both males and females. Low back problems in double bassists, and wrist/hand problems in drummers and pianists particularly, were very common. To better understand and manage instrumental music students, further study is necessary in understanding the factors that lead to these problems and factors (including exercise) that may prevent them. This period marked a new era in which the previous medical paradigm, dating from the mid-nineteenth century, was replaced by a broader, multidisciplinary approach, grounded in social science, the humanities, ecology, and public engagement with the politics of health once more coming into focus. The author uses case studies, storytelling, and real-life experience of establishing a new and revitalized public health system in the North West of England to bring the subject alive for a new generation of students and practitioners. Building on historic insights and timeless lessons from the Victorian and early-twentieth-century pioneers, he traces the evolution of the new thinking and its translation into action. The volume offers a rich menu of examples of responses to an array of new challenges ranging from new infections, such as HIV/AIDS and Ebola, to the lifestyle diseases of the new age, and the application of public health thinking to mental health and the problems of an ageing population. Abstract:
This chapter examines the experiences of women who studied at Irish medical schools and hospitals from the 1880s to 1940s. Previous research has suggested that the first generation of female medical students at Irish institutions had largely positive educational experiences and were treated in a paternalistic and supportive manner by their professors and fellow students, in contrast with their counterparts in Britain. However, in spite of this, it is clear that Victorian arguments against women studying medicine prevailed. In the student press, female medical students were presented as the ‘other’ and characterised as studious, bookish, cold, defeminised or alternately as obsessed or unconcerned with their appearances. It is clear, that although women and men were largely educated together for all subjects, with the exception of anatomy dissections, that women occupied a separate social sphere from the male students. Drawing on student magazines, Irish doctors’ memoirs, newspapers and the minute books of medical student societies, this chapter evaluates attitudes to women studying medicine and the educational and extra-curricular experiences of these women and how they fitted in within a very masculine sphere. In addition, this chapter will also explore women’s day-to-day student lives and the challenges they faced in pursuit of their education.

Sports fans are known to engage in BIRGing, or basking in reflected glory after their team wins, and CORFing, cutting off reflected failure following a team loss. These phenomena are related to social identity theory, which examines how group memberships shape a person's self-image. This chapter explores how media-attentive sports fans internalize victory and externalize defeat by charting the simultaneous developments in the 1970s of social identity theory, advanced by European social psychologists, and BIRGing and CORFing, which are rooted in a landmark study on college students wearing school-identifying apparel after the university football team won. The chapter also examines how social identity has served and can continue to be utilized as the theoretical backbone for research on mass-mediated sports fandom.

This chapter discusses the life and work of Richard B. Spencer, the president of the National Policy Institute, a US white-nationalist think tank. A few weeks after the 2016 presidential election, at a National Policy Institute conference, Spencer famously called “Hail Trump, hail our people, hail victory!” and some of his supporters gave the Nazi salute. Spencer is self-described as an identitarian, and is the inventor of the term “Alt Right,” which he coined to differentiate his views from mainstream American conservatism. Spencer is the leading communicator of the Alt Right message rather than its leading intellectual. He has found his niche as Alt Right provocateur and media spokesman. The mass media line up to interview him, and university students are listening to his message.

I have attended the launch of an education programme. It was blasted into orbit. I was in French Guyana for the launch of an Ariane rocket carrying a telecommunications satellite which would deliver broadband access to educational services for parts of Africa not reached by fibre or mobile phone masts. Many education programmes and teaching materials are available on-line but schools and colleges in parts of Ethiopia or Kenya or Rwanda do not have the broadband connections to access them. A small and affordable satellite dish at a local school or college opens up higher education to them. For centuries our picture of education has been very different. A wonderful image in a medieval illuminated manuscript shows a professor lecturing a class. It is a scene we recognize today: students at the front who are keen and attentive and others at the back who aren’t. The place is Bologna and the lecturer is Henry of Germany so the university is international. Some of the most profound features of university life are not very different from what those students experienced centuries ago, even whilst at the same time a student may be learning about the latest intellectual advances. This mix of ancient and modern is part of the particular appeal of the university—graduates dressed up in medieval robes and perhaps with some Latin thrown in are awarded doctorates for research out at the frontiers of knowledge. We are now at the moment when the technological revolution which has changed so much else in our lives is going to transform education. It won’t be the first time innovation has had this effect—the Victorian Penny Post made the correspondence course and the University of London external degree possible. There are sceptics who doubt the balance of ancient and modern is about to change radically. They argue that even whilst technology has changed the classic forms of academic study—the lecture, the printed book, the essay—are going to continue to be impervious to innovation because they meet deep human needs. Moreover there have been bold claims for the impact of technology on education which now sound pretty silly.

Jack Beecham’s apt saying “If you want to talk with me, you’ll have to walk” indicates the necessary connection between thought and work. While our dualistic culture devalues work, incorporating manual work into higher education reminds students that love must be enacted. The liberal arts, therefore, remain insufficient unless they are joined with the practical arts, as advocated by the medieval Scholastic Hugh of St. Victor and by the original charter of land-grant colleges. After examining the damaging effects of our culture’s dualistic denigration of work, this chapter proposes three benefits of manual work: work puts us in contact with external standards, it corrects false or naïve ideas by adapting them to local realities, and it is one of the means by which we participate in bringing about healthy order. Although the current structure of universities may make incorporating manual work into the curriculum difficult, a first step is to understand even academic work as embodied. And some colleges have found creative ways to make their students work, whether through tuition waivers, service learning, or community gardening.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems offer a software-based system that handles an enterprise’s total information system needs in an integrated fashion. Such systems have seen a significant growth in the last decade in the US, Europe and Australian markets and, more recently, increasing growth in Asian countries. This increase in demand for ERP systems in Asia offers opportunities for the provision of high-quality ERP education programs in the region. This paper describes the issues and barriers associated with integrating ERP systems into university curricula. It outlines the experiences of Victoria University in offering ERP education through a strategic alliance with SAP. The University is extending its offshore programs by offering ERP education in the region to take advantage of the current increase in demand in ERP applications. To assist with the delivery of offshore ERP education an ERP e-Learning model has been developed that integrates synchronous and asynchronous content. Asynchronous e-learning does not involve the presence of a teacher. Typically the learning content is located on a web server that students can access using the Internet. Synchronous e-learning requires the learner and teacher to be present in the event at the same time. It is a real-time, instructor-led online learning event in which all participants are available at the same time and can communicate directly with each other. The model uses four technologies to facilitate teaching: application service provision (ASP), web-CT, computer-based training and virtual classroom technology. The ERP e-learning model provides an innovative and efficient means to deliver ERP curriculum. It is able to provide greater flexibility in offshore subject delivery and to maximise student learning outcomes. This is particularly relevant in light of recent international medical (SARS) and terrorists incidents.
