Abstract:
Social media platforms have been pivotal in redefining the conduct of contemporary society. Amid the proliferation of a range of new and ubiquitous online platforms, YouTube, a video-based platform, remains a key driver in the democratisation of creative, playful, vernacular, intimate, as well as political expressions. As a critical node of contemporary communication and digital cultures, its steady uptake and appropriation in a social media-savvy nation such as the Philippines requires a critical examination of its role in the continued reconstruction of identities, communities, and broader social institutions. This book closely analyses the diverse content and practices of amateur Filipino YouTubers, exposing and problematising the dynamics of brokering the contested aspirational logics of beauty and selfhood, interracial relationships, world-class labour, and progressive governance in a digital sphere. Ultimately, Philippine Digital Cultures: Brokerage Dynamics on YouTube offers a fresh, compelling, and nuanced account of YouTube as an important site for the mediation of culture, economy, and politics in Philippine postcolonial modernity amid rapid economic globalisation and digitalisation.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter presents structural equation modeling as a tool for conducting research regarding how collections of variables may be related to each other as well as to a particular outcome or even multiple outcomes. Structural equation modeling refers to a collection of analytical techniques that can be used to model complex patterns of predictive relationships among a collection of both measured and latent variables. As a statistical tool, structural equation modeling combines the features of regression and factor analysis. The chapter offers conceptual illustrations and practical steps for carrying out structural equation modeling by describing mediation and moderation analyses in the context of music education research.

Abstract:
Chapter Four analyses a preaching style that contrasts with that analysed in Chapter Three. Shiddiq Amien (d. 2009) was the chairman of Persatuan Islam (The Islamic Association). Like Al-Jauhari, he was one of the most popular of Bandung’s preachers. His style was constrained in comparison to Al-Jauhari’s, reflecting an ideology of mediation expressed in authoritative statements written by a number of Persis ideologues. According to this ideology, listeners should be seriously engaged in acquiring Islamic knowledge, and the exercise of oratorical skill is unwelcome. This ideology corresponds with widely accepted conceptions of Indonesian citizenship subjectivity, giving Amien a more credible position in the Indonesian public sphere in comparison with Al-Jauhari.

Haworth, Christopher. Technology, Creativity, and the Social in Algorithmic Music. Edited by Roger T. Dean and Alex McLean. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190226992.013.13.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter surveys developments in the sociology of art and theories of mediation to examine the contribution of technical devices and institutions to musical creativity. In particular, it considers Actor-Network Theory as a means to analyse the contributions of ‘nonhuman actors’ to the social world of algorithmic music. Two case studies are discussed: the network music pioneers The Hub and the contemporary genre of live coding. The example of The Hub raises the question of technological change and the necessity of considering the external forces that bear on the instrumentarium of algorithmic music as part of its social ecology. The chapter analyses live coding, focusing on the associated actors’ use of the Internet. It then charts the online development of the TOPLAP manifesto to illustrate how the ‘true’ computer music that live coding seeks to articulate is an ongoing social negotiation. The final section uses the Issuecrawler software to analyse networks of association within live coding.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the question of whether an arbitrator may also adopt a mediation function or whether the dual roles are antithetical. It tests that hypothesis by engaging in a cost-benefit analysis of differing scenarios when mediation is utilized in an arbitral context. The prime comparison is between parallel mediation with a separate neutral and the alternative of a dual-role neutral. The three key points are: there should be much more mediation occurring at the international level, regarding both potential and actual arbitral disputes; a commercially minded arbitrator concerned for the parties’ good faith should encourage mediation where appropriate, in particular, when an adjudicated outcome will not be in the interests of either, usually because the dispute is a small part of a long-term relationship that can risk that relationship no matter who wins; and, while informed party autonomy should always support a dual-role neutral, in most factual permutations, informed parties could be expected to prefer parallel mediation provided there is full cooperation between mediator and arbitrator. The chapter argues that the relative benefits of the use of dual-role neutrals would be greatly outweighed by the costs in fairness and efficiency, and the inevitable need for a sub-optimal design of either or both dispute processes. The benefits would also be separately outweighed by the risks of significant disruption to any ensuing arbitration if a dual-role neutral fails to achieve a settlement.

Waltham-Smith, Naomi. Haydn’s Revolution. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190662004.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter rigorously revises the music-theoretical conception of convention from the standpoint of Derridean deconstruction. The mediation of personal expression and generic convention is shown to be a dialectic of the proper and the improper. Analyses of a number of Haydn’s quartets illustrate that the modes of listening they produce always entail a certain exappropriation. This reading suggests one way in which Haydn is an “event,” as Badiou has claimed: the music reveals listening’s intimate relation to belonging. It does so by manipulating the relation between musical material and its use and by exposing the (im)potentiality of material before any appropriation.
