Full textIn museums and exhibition centres, the audience's reception of art works may be directed and oriented by museums educaors : they are the "busy bees" in the french governments' cultural democratization policy. If there is today a professional group labeled "museum educators", it is eventually the product of an exogenous construction by the institutions. Although a politic willpower reinforced by the law in 2002, the museums' various forms of HR management are still characterized by a high level of flexibility, a lack of focus in the scope of activity and a vague division of professional juridictions. Because public employers fail to offer stable and durable jobs and career perspectives, most of museum educators are not entirely and mainly engaged in their work. This labour market's feature hinder the collective structuration of a social group : museum educators have so far failed to build up a common destiny and to defend a distinctive position

Full textThis thesis proposes to develop a typology of artistic and cultural mediators by a socio-historical-inspired approach. These categories will take into account the diversity and the dynamic nature of this occupation in constant evolution. We will examine the function of cultural and artistic mediator, at the intersection of the world of culture and the world of school, by studying historically, a corpus of texts of reference, as well as the exercise of the mediator function in France. We will contextualize this analysis, observing styles of artistic and cultural mediators in mediations in the presence of schoolchildren and their effects. At the heart of our problem, we will examine the border between transmission and mediation. The thesis will conclude on a proposal for favourable indicators at a full meeting of students with work art

Full textPublic sites increasingly harbor the memories of migrants in their diversity and specificity, making audible and visible versions of the past that had been occluded or simply neglected. Museums increasingly believe that you empower immigrants by remembering and redeeming their memories, which have often been absent from national narratives. Henceforth, the transformation of old facilities that used to receive and accommodate immigrants – such as Ellis Island in New York – into sites that revive their histories. This shows a transformation in attitudes towards immigration, which has changed the status of “diaspora” and has given visibility to a range of cultural identities. Changing migrants’ relationship with their identity: from overseen and transitory memories to recognition and empowerment. The integration of migration history continues to be a challenge within museum spaces and narratives even though it is an increasingly notable feature of the inter- national museum landscape. Thus, it raises a lot of questions such as: What is an immigration heritage? How to exhibit immigration? Do attempts at representing migrants mirror a national paradigm?

Full textThis thesis apprehends the history of museums development and the professionalization of its actors, the diversification of their functions to meet new tasks, to promote a public service role and implement public services. We were interested in two professional groups related to the conservation and mediation in the context of the social role of museums. This research explores the current state of mediators' function and its non-professional recognition from the curators in the task division within the organization, revealing the process of building the scope dedicated to cultural mediation in museums. Finally, it focuses on Human Resource Management issues in order to recognize the professional identity and activities of mediators in museums

Full textAt the heart of recent cultural issues, museum institutions implement a cultural democratization project promoting art and museum spaces accessibility to a diversity of audiences. Based on France’s law on museums from 2002, this project is focusing on children and teenagers thanks to the creation of cultural mediation and specific museum offers. Regarded as the visitor of tomorrow, this young audience generates to museums a set of expectations and questionings regarding visitor knowledge, tools for increasing attendance, loyalty and art accessibility. These cultural mediation spaces become an opportunity for tracking visitors' journey and understanding intrinsic points of views. We will study various situations throughout the prism of Ergonomics by highlighting encounters with works of art during a guided tour on one hand, plastic and narratives creation during workshops on the other hand. Activity analysis will be an effective way for exploring and improving our understanding of traces of constructive activities and development in order to conceptualize them. These empirical and theoretical contributions will help developing appropriate resources of cultural mediation offers to young audiences and mediation professionals

Full textThe study presented in this thesis focuses on the visiting process of teenagers from 14 to 16 years old at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. I am principally drawing on concepts of “mediators” and “mediations”, following the definition given by Hennion (1988, 2000). Indeed, Hennion suggests that mediation should not be seen as a bridge between two entities, which is the common vision of mediation, but rather as a process under construction. Thus, the mediator is an element that will capture the young visitor's attention and mediation is the action that will develop in this mediator-visitor relationship. The analysis more specifically aims to identify the mediators acting during this visit and to understand the mediations that get constituted. This study was conducted with six teenagers between 14 and 16 years old. A first interview enabled me to become acquainted with the background of the young visitors regarding museums, and to understand in which conditions they were going to the exhibit. An observation, done in binomial groups, was then carried out during Once upon a time Impressionism. A story of impressionism: great French paintings from the Clark, the exhibit held at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. These observations allowed me to spot the moments that attracted the teenagers' attention during the visit. Finally, a second interview gave the opportunity to go over their visiting experience and to bring out the mediations that occurred. On the basis of this fieldwork, this thesis foregrounds a set of mediators (the other visitors, the environment, the works and stories) and mediations (dreaming, understanding, planning, admiring, comparing and refusing) that teenagers have developed. Following this, the thesis offers an explanation of the visiting process as analyzed with these teenagers through the representation of the “shell spiral''. This representation emphasizes the fact that the visiting process is not a linear phenomenon, but is created through the confrontation of the teenager's background with his new visiting experience. It is thus a circular process that relies on the teenager's background to progressively build new strata that will condition his future museum experiences.
