Wilburn, Shenetha L. "Deconstruction of stereotypical images and mediated messages in African-American sitcoms." DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 2002. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/657.

Abstract:
This study examines the images of African Americans in black-themed sitcoms and mediated messages presented here. The study was based on the premise that the images of African Americans on television sitcoms are one dimensional and comedic. A content analysis approach was used to analyze various television sitcoms. Definitions were used to determine what type of image existed using the foundation provided by Donald Bogle and Stewart Hall. The researcher found that although many of the African-American-themed sitcoms investigated represented traditional stereotypical images, there were mediated messages in these sitcoms, which offered a new and different perspective on African Americans. This suggests that African-American images on black-themed sitcoms are moving forward. Additionally, the researcher found that sitcoms depicting African-American life from a comedic point-of-view seem to be more acceptable in popular culture than those which depict life from a dramatic and/or realistic point-of-view.

Ryalls, Emily Davis. "The Culture of Mean: Gender, Race, and Class in Mediated Images of Girls' Bullying." Scholar Commons, 2011. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3325.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines narratives about female bullying and aggression through mediated images of "mean girls." Through textual analysis of popular media featuring mean girls (television shows such as Gossip Girl and films like Mean Girls), as well as national news coverage of the case of Phoebe Prince, who reportedly committed suicide after being bullied by girls from her school, this feminist examination questions how the image of the mean girl is raced and classed. This dissertation values an interdisciplinary approach to research that works to make sense of the forces that produce bodies as gendered, raced, and classed. One of the central concerns of this project is explore images of mean girls in order to highlight the ideas that construct female aggression as deviant. In popular culture, the mean girl is constructed as a popular girl who protects and cultivates the power associated with her elite status in duplicitous and cruel ways. Specifically, mean girls are framed as using indirect aggression, which is defined as a form of social manipulation. This covert form of aggression, also referred to as "relational" or "social" aggression, includes a series of actions aimed at destroying other girls' relationships, causing their victims to feel marginalized. The bullying tactics associated with indirect aggression include gossiping, social exclusion, stealing friends, not talking to someone, and threatening to withdraw friendship. The leader of the clique is the Queen Bee who is able to use boundary maintenance to exclude other girls from her friendship groups. In media texts, while the Queen Bee is always White, the Mean Girl discourse does not ignore girls of color. Instead, girls of color are acknowledged as having the potential to be mean, but, more often, they are shown to exemplify the characteristics of normative White femininity (they are nice and prioritize heterosexual relationships) and to escape the lure of popularity. Indeed, whereas media texts continually center Whiteness as a necessary component of the mean girl image, nice girls are constructed as White, Latina, and Black. The constructions of the girls of color often rely on stereotyped behaviors (i.e., Black girls' direct talk and Latina girls' commitment to nuclear family structures); at the same time, these essentialized characteristics are revered and incorporated into the nice girl tropes. The Queen Bee is always upper-class, while the Wannabe (the girl who desires to be in the clique) is middle-class. When attempting to usurp the Queen Bee's power, the Wannabe breaks with normative cultural versions of White, middle-class passive femininity in ways that are framed as problematic. Although the Wannabe rises above her class, in so doing, she also transcends her "authentic" goodness. As a result, middle-classness is recentered and ascribed as part of the nice girl's authentic image. The Mean Girl discourse defines girls' success on a continuum. A popular girl stays at the top of the social hierarchy by being mean. The nice girl finds individual success by removing herself from elite social circles. As a result, privilege is not defined inherently as the problem, but girls' excessive abuse and access to privilege is.

Miller, Elizabeth. "Manipulating the Hype: contemporary art's response to media cliches." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/10099.

Full text
Abstract:
Manipulating the Hype addresses art’s reaction to the barrage of signs produced by the media. The paper researches contemporary art’s response to clichéd media stereotypes and elucidates artists’ multifaceted perspective on overtly obvious yet widely embraced paradigms marketed by the media. Contemporary art’s strategic reconfiguration of media stereotypes is a valuable introspection upon the superficiality and impracticability of advertising and entertainment industry constructs. By reconsidering the mediated image, art has the ability to inspire reevaluation of cultural values. The thesis additionally attempts to ascertain the reinterpretation of media stereotypes as a common thread linking principal art movements and historically significant artworks from around the world since 1960. How does contemporary art respond to the extensive cultural influence of the media? Is a reaction to mass media a thematic commonality linking contemporary artists in the age of globalization? Manipulating the Hype is a dual outcome investigation comprised of written thesis and studio practice. The written thesis combines experience from a lengthy professional practice with historical and theoretical research. The visual thesis consists of twelve photographic works taken at on the Big Island of Hawaii. The images juxtapose artificial icons of power from popular culture with the natural force of the active lava flow. The process of research discloses how the advertising and entertainment industries capitalize upon innate human desires through the manipulative proliferation of archetypal imagery. Furthermore, the thesis establishes the widespread retort to media clichés as a palpable commonality in studio practices worldwide. The findings in the research make evident that although contemporary art does not have sufficient influence to reform the media, it can heighten public awareness of media tactics.

Lewis, Kelly M. "Digitally mediated martyrdom: The visual politics of posthumous images in the popular struggle for social justice." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2020. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/202083/1/Kelly_Lewis_Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis introduced a new way of studying how visual social media is used to protest unjust deaths, especially those caused by police brutality and other forms of state violence. It developed the concept of 'digitally mediated martyrdom' to describe the communication practices that emerge through the online circulation of posthumous digital images of victims. It applied this concept to the murder of Khaled Said in Egypt in 2010, and to the murder of Trayvon Martin in America in 2012. It used digital ethnography methods to explore the role that visual social media play in political discourse and protest mobilisations. The thesis found that the figure of the unintentional martyr is increasingly being deployed in social justice movements to give visibility to human rights abuses and to demand radical change.

Thomas, Patricia Adele. "Print to pixel: how can the cultural implications of mediated images and text be examined using creative practice?" Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2013. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/569.

Abstract:
Information in the twenty-first century is at our fingertips in an instant. Through the technology of the mobile phone, computer, and television, we are alerted to information of international, national, local, and personal significance. The aim of this research is to establish that creative practice can provide a cogent forum with which to interrogate the cultural implications of mediated images and text in the twenty first Century. This exegesis Print to pixel explores the interrelationship between the political and cultural values as identified in the various codes within western mainstream news media. The cultural implications of the shift from print to digital technology leading to the immediacy of access to information, is crucial to this research. I focus on the media coverage of September 11 2001 as an example of the use of codes, framing and repetition in western mainstream news media. The coverage of the reaction to September 11 2001 exemplified the potency of images to communicate a particular political and social agenda. The creative component of my research consists of associated extracted images and text from western mainstream news media. The act of extracting and freezing images from the seemingly continuous flow of digital information is key to this research, allowing art gallery visitors to focus and re-engage with too readily dismissed information on screen. I examine the future of print by including digital and traditional print techniques, on paper, on screens and in books, in an investigation of the links between the different technologies used to report the events and consequences of September 11 2001. The combination of theory and practice in the form of reflexive praxis is the methodology I use to develop my findings. Reflexive praxis offers a method for arts practice, as a communicative act, to create a new balance by which the artist/researcher adopts processes acknowledging individual and social influences by applying theoretical rigour to draw new conclusions and propose new questions. Jurgen Habermas refers to the validity claims that are made in the communicative act and states that “The validity claims that we raise in conversation – that is, when we say something with conviction – transcend this specific conversational context, pointing to something beyond the spatiotemporal ambit of the occasion” (1990, p. 19). He refers to the conversation as an opportunity to make a statement that goes beyond the immediate interaction and leads to wider implications. I regard the exhibition of my artworks as providing that ‘conversational context’ in which I raise questions that may have unpredictable implications as the viewer brings to the work their own life influences and prejudices. Therefore, applying reflexive praxis by “reflecting upon, and reconstructing the constructed world,” I constantly analyse the propositions being made through my work and assume “a process of meaning making, and that meaning and its processes are contingent upon a cultural and social environment” (Crouch, 2007, p. 112). It is only through the manifestation of my research ideas in the form of exhibited artworks that an evaluation through reflexive praxis occurs: considering how works are interpreted according to the context in which they are shown, what relationships with other works reveal and whether the artworks successfully address the research aims.

Bakhshi, Saeideh. "Photo engagement: how presentation and content of images impact their engagement and diffusion." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/54254.

Full text
Abstract:
The type of media shared through social media channels has shifted from text content to include an increasingly large number of images. Visual traces resulting from people's online social behavior have the potential to reveal insights about our habits, activities and preferences. The role of social network-related factors have been well studied in previous research. Yet, few studies have sought to understand how user behavior in social networks is dependent on the image itself. The goal of my dissertation is to understand how people engage with image content, and I seek to uncover the role of presentation and image content on people's preferences. To achieve this goal, I study the image sharing communities, Flickr, Instagram and Pinterest, using quantitative and qualitative methods. First, I show how colors -- a fundamental property of an image -- could impact the virality of an image on Pinterest. I consider three dimensions of color: hue, saturation and brightness and evaluate their role in the diffusion of the image on Pinterest, while controlling for social network reach and activity. Next, I shift the focus from abstract colors to a higher-level presentation of images. I study the role of filters on the Flickr mobile application as proxies to visual computation. To understand how people use filters, I conduct an interview study with 15 Flickr mobile users about their filter use. I analyze Flickr mobile images to discover the role of filters in engaging users. Presentation is not the only factor that makes an image interesting. To gain deeper insights in what makes an image more engaging in social image sharing sites, I study the images of people on the Instagram network. I compare images of people with those that do not have faces and find that images with human faces are more engaging. I also look at the role of age and gender of people in the image in engaging users. Finally, I examine different content categories, with and without filters, and study the impact of content category on engagement. I use large-scale data from Flickr and interviews with Flickr mobile users to draw insights into filter use and content engagement. This dissertation takes a first step toward understanding content and presentation of images and how they impact one aspect of user behavior online. It provides several theoretical and design implications for effective design, creation and imposition of rules on image sharing communities. This dissertation opens up a new direction for future research in multimedia-mediated communication.

Hendriks, Alexandra. "Examining the impact of repeated exposure to ideal mediated body images on body satisfaction, self-esteem, and disordered eating in females." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/279969.

Full text
Abstract:
Based on principles related to the self-concept, social comparison theory, self-discrepancy theory, and cultivation theory, this study predicted that increases in exposure to mediated ideal bodies would be associated with a greater likelihood to hold beauty-related beliefs and values consistent with those presented in mainstream media. The study further predicted that, by altering the fidelity of the relationship between the ought self and the ideal self, individual difference variables (i.e., body mass index, self-monitoring, intrasexual competitiveness, and self-efficacy) would interact with media exposure to affect body satisfaction. Body satisfaction, in turn, would interact with importance of the physical self to the self-concept to affect self-esteem, which would predict patterns of disordered eating. To test these predictions, 202 undergraduate females completed a survey during class time. Results revealed that fashion magazine consumption (but not television consumption) was positively correlated with beauty-related beliefs. While media exposure did not directly predict body satisfaction, body mass and self-efficacy were direct predictors of body satisfaction. Self-monitoring interacted with body weight and fashion magazine consumption to influence body satisfaction, as did intrasexual competitiveness. Body satisfaction and self-esteem were positively correlated with each other and negatively correlated with characteristics of eating disorders. The implications of these results, as well as suggestions for future research, are discussed.

Ahonen, Ninni. "‘Media witnessing’: people’s engagement with viral news photographs of Syrian children in 2015 and 2016." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Institutionen för mediestudier, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-160781.

Abstract:
This qualitative and explanatory study focuses on the concept of ‘media witnessing’, which concerns witnessing media texts performed in, by, and through the media. The aim is to determine how people from different backgrounds engage with news photographs of Syrian children which went viral in 2015 and 2016. Furthermore, this study uses the analytical framework of media witnessing created by Maria Kyriakidou (2015). The framework was made to analyse four different reactions to distant, mediated suffering: affective, ecstatic, politicised and detached. This framework is tested and adapted for this study to identify the engagement experience of individuals with new viral photographs. These photographs were taken by professional photojournalists. The data was collected via semi-structured, two-person interviews known as dyadic interviews. Participants were recruited by way of purposive and snowball sampling. In the end, four dyadic interviews were conducted which involved eight individuals in total. During each interview, two participants looked together at four viral news photographs and discussed their thoughts and feelings based on an interview guide. All dyadic interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. The study material—four transcripts—was finally analysed using a thematic analysis method. Themes were based on modes of media witnessing. The analysis reveals a fifth mode of response—first-hand witnessing—which is linked to an individual’s own experience and past. Finally, this study claims that an adapted framework constitutes a suitable way to analyse people’s engagement but that there is a need for further study of media witnessing.

Traditionally, body image research has focused on young women. However, there are indications of cultural shifts which extend physical appearance pressures to both men and women, as well as to middle-aged and older adults. Two hundred and ten subjects were administered objective body image measures including the Figure Rating Scale, the Body Shape Questionnaire, and the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire, as well as projective measures including the Holtzman Inkblot Technique and the Draw-A-Person. The NEO-Five Factor Inventory and the Social Anxiety Subscale were also used to explore variables which might covary with body image. A 3 X 2 X 2 Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) was utilized with social desirability as the covariate.

The main objective of this research is to examine whether imagination can be configured as an “archaeological tool” over the image in its saturated media environments. The work begins considering Google Street View as its media environment and we affirm that inflation and continuous dissemination of images by its apparatuses causes a anaestheticization of senses. The selected corpus of analysis was the photographic act of German photographer Michael Wolf in the series titled Street View, in which author takes photos, through computer screen, from Google Street View site. By this object, one analyzes the inventive and delved character of this photographic dynamic over the images, which one suggests an archaeological nature in this photographic act. By this point, the idea of an archeology of image is here evoked in the sense of depth perception, which points not only to past traces hidden in the depths of the image, but also prospect signal elements that indicate future tracks in it. Therefore, one justifies the need for this archaeological sight, as a way to overcome the celebrated superficial visuality in mediatic images, and our suggested hypothesis is that the archaeological tool, which is able to delve on the image is imagination. Consequently, imagination would operate as a point of equalization in front of saturated visual media environments. The methodology adopted was an approximation to the object, which took place oblique cuts and a broader target, one considers for an Archeogenealogy of concepts and theories. The research approaches aspects of Image Theory in Walter Benjamin, Aby Warburg, Hans Belting and Norval Baitello Jr., about media environments and how images in excess dulls perception, there was discussion with reflections of Theory of Media in authors like Vilém Flusser – concepts of reign of garbage and escalating of abstraction - Dietmar Kamper (imaginary orbit and force of imagination) and Malena Contrera, concept of mediasphere. Regarding the concept of imagination, one argues based on Bachelard, and about visual thinking we consider reflections from Arnheim and Damasio. As a result, therefore, we emphasize how imagination is configured as an archeology of image based on three aspects: thought by images, optical unconscious and distraction. Thereby, one reaffirms the fundamental role of the imagination, and thus the body, in its anthropological relationship with images

Abstract:
The notion of being connected all the time and everywhere has been a primary goal of the deployment of ubiquitous computing technologies such as wireless networks in urban areas. This has endangered traditional third places and disrupted conventional human relationships, leading to social scientists referring to modern technologically mediated cities as “lonely places”. While it may be impossible to recreate the traditional third places, it is feasible to utilize ICT as a mediator for social interaction. This thesis introduces the UBI-Collage system for mediating co-located social image sharing for the purpose of establishing a third place with a community of users. The design of the system was based on a detailed study of contemporary trends in image sharing practices, in particular among younger generations. Two incremental prototypes of the system were implemented that coupled a large situated display and personal mobile devices into a user interface providing public and private views into the photo gallery. The prototypes were evaluated in form of controlled user tests conducted in a laboratory environment with 21 and 19 participants, respectively. They used the system for 30–45 minutes and then provided feedback on questionnaire statements focusing on three themes: entertainment value, the facilitation of socialising, and contribution towards an effective third place. The results of the user tests indicated that the participants generally accepted image sharing as an entertaining social activity. However, the evidence on the facilitation of socializing and contribution towards an effective third place was much less conclusive. This is at least partly due to the controlled experiment conducted in a laboratory environment that is hardly an ideal setting for establishing a third place. The user tests also revealed that user experience depended heavily on the interaction design of the system

Abstract: This work approaches the question of how to solve the image-wave equation for depth remigration by numerical methods. The objective is the reconstruction of an image of the geologic layers of the subsoil from a previously migrated image with a different velocity model. Our main objective in this work is the investigation of possible methods that can solve the problems that appeared when using explicit _nite-difference schemes for the solution of the image-wave equation in previous works, particularly numerical dispersion. For this purpose, we study the method of _nite volumes, as well as implicit _nite-difference schemes. The main characteristic of the _nite-volume method is to simply propagate the averages in the cells of the mesh instead of the discretized data themselves as it is done in the _nitedifference method. As another attempt to solve the problem of the dispersion, we study two types of implementation of implicit _nite-difference schemes, that is, implicit implementations of conventional schemes evaluated out the edge of the cell and a scheme evaluated in the center of the cell. The quality of the studied algoritms has been tested numerically. These numerical tests show that the method of _nite volumes is not adequate to solve the problem of dispersion, for the average calculated in each step additionally increases the pulse stretch. Moreover, the implicit implementations of the conventional schemes show the same dispersion behavior as the explicit implementations. Solely the centered scheme was capable to improve the numerical dispersion in comparison with the previous implementations, however only for data containing

In this paper, the new strategy of public diplomacy is examined comparatively between Chile and Peru: known as gastrodiplomacy. Seeks to understand both uses of gastrodiplomacy within the public diplomacy of Chile and Peru. For this, the following main question is explored: What similarities and differences are observed in the use of gastrodiplomacy in the public diplomacy of Chile and Peru? which will be sought to answer from the following secondary questions: How different actors in Chile and Peru have contributed to gastrodiplomacy initiatives to enhance international projection?; What gastrodiplomacy actions have Chile and Peru developed to enhance their international projection? and, finally, What gastrodiplomacy strategies could the case of Chile execute to enhance its international projection, considering aspects of the Peruvian case? As analyzed, Peru has managed to improve its international projection within the international arena through the use of gastrodiplomacy, while Chile has not yet managed to project a holistic gastrodiplomacy campaign, nevertheless, having the tools to carry it out, which could contribute to enhance its international projection within the international system.

Abstract:
This study was an investigation of the effects of physiologically-oriented mental imagery on immune functioning. College students with normal medical histories were randomly selected to one of three groups. Subjects in Group 1 participated in short educational training on the production of secretory immunoglobulin A. They were then tested on salivary IgA, skin temperature and the Profile of Mood States (POMS) before and after listening to a 17-minute tape of imagery instructions with specially-composed background "entrainment" music, designed to enhance imagery. Subjects in Group 2 (placebo controls) listened to the same music but received no formal training on the immune system. Group 3 acted as a control and subjects were tested before and after 17 minutes of no activity. Treatment groups listened to their tapes at home on a bi-daily basis for six weeks. All groups were again tested at Weeks 3 and 6. Secretory IgA was analyzed using standard radial immuno-diffusion techniques. Repeated measures analyses of variance with planned orthogonal contrasts were used to evaluate the data. Significant overall increases (p < .05) were found between pre- and posttests for all three trials. Groups 1 and 2 combined (treatment groups) yielded significantly greater increases in slgA over Group 3 (control) for all three trials. Group 1 (imagery) was significantly higher than Group 2 (music) in antibody production for Trials 2 and 3. No group differences were noted in saliva volume or skin temperature, indicating that autonomic physiological mechanisms were not responsible for differences in antibody production. POMS changes more often favored Group 1. Symptomatology, recorded by subjects at weeks three and six, was significantly lower for three symptoms (rapid heartbeat, breathing difficulty, and jaw clenching), again favoring both treatment groups over the control group. Conclusions were that CNS-mediated immunoenhancement through mental imagery is possible.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to gain in-depth knowledge of how the members of online communities form impressions of organisations that use online communities in their communication activities. Online impression formation has its peculiarities and in order to succeed companies need to better understand this phenomenon. In order to appreciate and evaluate an interaction, those involved in it must know their own identity. Hence, individuals as well as companies engage in identity production by trying to project a favourable impression. The process of identity production can take place in both the offline and the online world. This study focuses on the online world, more specifically on online communities, by investigating how online community members form impressions of companies that produce their identities in online communities. Technology has changed customer behaviours dramatically. People have embraced the Internet to meet and interact with one another. This behaviour is in line with the postmodern assumption that there is a movement towards re-socialisation. Online communication platforms connect people globally and give them the possibility to interact and form online social networks. These platforms are interactive, and thus change the traditional way of communication. Companies therefore have to embrace those interactive ways of communication. In the online world consumers are quick to react to communication weaknesses. Inappropriate corporate communication activities can affect the image they have formed of the company in question.

Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the teenagers use interpersonal communication resources mediated for sociability purposes, having as first mean the wire line telephone, which lasted until the end of the 1990 s. In the early 21th century, with the advent of social networking, the body invisibility of the wire line telephone was supplanted by extra-visibility of digital photos posted on personal pages. These are images worked in details in order to present spectacular bidimensionalized corporeality. This is the object of this research that aims to analyze, from a semiotic point of view, these images that, far from simple capture of the anatomic-physiologic body arise, present, in fact, the Ideal I emulated in media images. The selection of the corpus of pictures focused on images of teenagers, because these are subjects who experience a peculiar biological stage, at a time when the body undergoes changes of puberty, surrendering to image editing, either it in stage of pre-production, production, or post-production. The conceptual frameworks first by understanding youth passes while class invented in the 19th century, highlighting the main Latin American theorists that study on the subject and reinforce the relevance of the media to the juvenile temporal clippings from the early 1950. Regarding the photographic images, bring to light the texts of Vilem Flusser, Roland Barthes and Lucia Santaella. By handling bodily images highlighted by digital photo, Act was important to consider the Sigmund Freud´s concept of narcissism, Jacques Lacan's mirror stage and the selfconstitution of the subject by Michel Foucault. Supported in this theoretical framework, the research followed to the empirical application. It is based on a methodology composed by a quantitative survey examined statistically, followed by two qualitative analysis: the first discusses the content of sentences written by teens about the Act of editing images, and the second presents a set of photographs of users of social networks, studied by the bias of peircian semiotics. From this research it was concluded that when adolescent girls post their selfportraits in the network, they become despots about themselves, enabling and disabling the signs that they represent in order to receive the approval of friends by the comments and by acts of "enjoy". It proves that the spectacular corporeality is predominantly visual production of the objectified subject on disposed images, ready to meet the gaze of the other

I the current work were used 43 human spines of c3-c7, from the collection of the Department of Anatomy and Embryology of the Faculty of Medicine of Valencia, being carried out mensurations of lineal variables in them, angular and of areas, that provide data and relationships between the different variables to the level of the vertebral body, pedicle, transverse processes, plate and spinous process. A bidimensional vertebral model of digitization on visions was used, previous, lateral right and superior of the vertebra, with the purpose of valuing the mensurations of these vertebras, analyze the existent relationships between them and predict the value of a variable, knowing the value of that same variable in another level; and lastly find models of lineal regression with are or more independent variables that better they predict the value of the dependent variable. The main objective of the present work went evaluate the components of the swinging of energy and the evapotranspiração in semi-arid area using the algorithm SEBAL - Surface Energy Balances Algorithm it goes Land (Bastiaanssen, 1995) and images of the satellite Landsat-5 TM. The study area was the Irrigated Perimeter California located in the municipal district of Canindé of São Francisco - SE, Brazil. For attainment of the objectives images obtained in April 8, 2005 and December 7, 2006 were used, that they collect the irrigated areas of the perimeter, it leaves of the river San Francisco and areas with native vegetation. Was the albedo of the surface certain (?), vegetation indexes (NDVI, SAVI and IAF) and the temperature of the surface (Ts) for each pixel. The incident radiation of wave tans it was esteemed in function of the solar constant, of the atmospheric transmissividade, of the angle solar zenital and of the square of the distance relative Earth-sun. The incident radiation of long wave had as base for its estimate the temperature of the air measure in the meteorological station of surface and the emitted radiation of long wave esteemed with base in the surface temperature. Starting from those variables the radiation balance was determined (Rn) whose medium values esteemed by Landsat 5-TM for the 08/04/2005 were 565,0 W m- 2 and for the image of the 07/12/2006, 585,3 W m- 2. The flow of heat in the soil (G), esteemed in function of Rn, Ts? and of NDVI, it presented for the 08/04/2005 the medium value of 78,9 W m- 2, however, for the date of 07/12/2006 the medium value of that same variable was 79,1 W m- 2. The flow of sensitive heat (H), esteemed with the application of the process interativo, in function of the speed of the wind and of the medium height of the obtained of the meteorological station of surface vegetation and also with base in two reference pixels (hot and cold) to determine the temperature difference between the surface and the close air the same, did it present for the 08/04/2005 the medium value of 115W m-2. In 07/12/2006 the medium value of H esteemed by the referred satellite was 140,7 W m- 2. The flow of latent heat (?E), calculated as residual part of the swinging of energy to the surface, it presented medium values of 402,0 W m- 2 for the date of 08/04/2005 and of 365,5 W m- 2 for the 07/12/2006. The evapotranspiration (ET) it presented medium value of 3,5 mm day- 1 for the 08/04/2005 with maximum value of 5,8 mm day- 1. Already for 07/12/2006 dear medium ET was of 3,2 mm day- 1, with a maximum value of 5,9 mm day- 1.
