Gadek, Guillaume. "Détection d'opinions, d'acteurs-clés et de communautés thématiques dans les médias sociaux." Thesis, Normandie, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018NORMIR18/document.
Online Social Networks have taken a huge place in the informational space and are often used for advertising, e-reputation, propaganda, or even manipulation, either by individuals, companies or states. The amount of information makes difficult the human exploitation, while the need for social network analysis remains unsatisfied: trends must be extracted from the posted messages, the user behaviours must be characterised, and the social structure must be identified. To tackle this problem, we propose a system providing analysis tools on three levels. First, the message analysis aims to determine the opinions they bear. Then, the characterisation and evaluation of user accounts is performed thanks to the union of a behavioural profiling method, the study of node importance and position in social graphs and engagement and influence measures. Finally the step of user community detection and evaluation is accomplished. For this last challenge, we introduce thematic cohesion scores, completing the topological, graph-based measures for group quality. This system is then applied on two corpora, extracted from two different online social media. The first is constituted of messages published on Twitter, gathering every activity performed by a set of 5,000 accounts on a long period. The second stems from a ToR-based social network, named Galaxy2, and includes every public action performed on the platform during its uptime. We evaluate the relevance of our system on these two datasets, showing the complementarity of user account characterisation tools (influence, behaviour and role), and user account communities (interaction strength, thematic cohesion), enriching the social graph exploitation with textual content elements
Merra, Lucile. "Pour une sociologie des médias sociaux : Internet et la révolution médiatique : nouveaux médias et interactions." Thesis, Paris 5, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA05H024/document.
This thesis is focused on the analysis of a topic that is still a “work in progress” in Sociology: social media. Although this tautological expression may be amazing at first sight, it appears that no academic definition of social media has been proposed to date. This gap in academic research illustrates that this topic is both recent and complex. Therefore, our research aims to conduct a contextual analysis of the emergence of a new media. This research is based on an empirical approach through the study of uses, practices and representations of social media users. As social media are characterized by the interactionist dimension, our research will target active users. From these connected and networked people to active audiences, our analysis will focus on new ways related to involvement. Our research will contribute to the sociological understanding of a social, cultural and media topic that represents social media as well as the set up of social movements supported by social media
Charmarkeh, Houssein. "Pratiques médiatiques, usages des médias sociaux et trajectoires migratoires des Somaliens en France et au Canada." Thesis, Paris 3, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA030099.
Technologies are omnipresent in our society, from social media, to satellite television and Internet broadcasting and shape the way we live, work, and interact. It has also transformed the international migration, making it possible for migrants to maintain strong ties between their host society and country of origin. Many studies have been conducted on the usage of ICT by migrants in the host country; however, there is limited research on the use of ICT by refugees during their migratory paths. This study focuses on the analysis of media practices and uses of social media by Somali refugees from Somalia to France (Rennes, Angers and Paris). In addition, this field survey is multi-sited and covers the relationship between the media practices and identity reconstruction of Somalis in two Canadian cities, Ottawa and Toronto. Despite the emergence of studies on the Canadian Somali community, very little research exists on the analysis of media practices Somalis, particularly in the domestic context. The methodological approach used in this study is based on an epistemological posture via the tools of critical ethnography and multi-sited. Critical ethnography aims to address the social and economic inequalities in which Somalis live in France and Canada. The results of this research show that the refugees, who are often labelled as being under-equipped with limited knowledge of computers, know how to use social media (Facebook, Youtube) and instant communication tools (Skype, MSN Messenger,VoIP) and information technologies and communication. We will also see how the collective use of YouTube videos, television and radio by Somalis in Canada and France has a complementary role to that of the institutions responsible for safeguarding the memory and transmission of cultural identity. The production and reception of video, radio and television broadcasts of the Somali community symbolize "traces" or efforts to rebuild Somalia. Through detailed analysis of media practices in the context of migration, this study seeks to contribute to the advancement of knowledge on the use of ICT by Somali refugees

From its outset in November 2018, the Yellow Vests Movement (YVM) has stood out for its fierce criticism of the mainstream media, most notably through its engagement on social media platforms. This thesis investigates the driving forces behind this denunciation. It draws on combined fieldworks, involving the analysis of screenshots taken from the YV’s Facebook spaces (n = 316), as well as semi-structured interviews conducted among the movement’s participants (n = 38), and results from a 2019 survey administered via the Pluralisme de l’information en ligne (PIL) research project. The study of this empirical data seeks to identify the social organizing principles of the YV’s media criticism. It combines a dispositionalist examination of the respondents’ individual experiences with a discussion of the online development of a shared critical culture, specific to the protest. The YV’s media criticism thus appears to be the product of a mobilization of demonstrators with varying degrees of inclination towards critical discourse. As the activist experience of the YV regularly found itself at odds with the media coverage of the movement, it prompted the online expression of an anger aggregated by platforms, and gradually formed a common culture of protest. This media criticism eventually took root in the daily lives of the YV, resulting in a reconfiguration of their media practices, thus sustaining a denunciation that became a structural feature of the protest
Sedel, Julie. "La banlieue comme enjeu de lutte symbolique : contribution à l'analyse des relations entre médias et champs sociaux." Paris, EHESS, 2007. http://www.theses.fr/2007EHES0074.
This PHD analyses the media coverage of poor districts through the study of lower-class urban neighbourhoods and of the work of journalists'. The first part shows the combined effects of the transformations of poor areas (through monographs realized in two social-housing areas in the suburb of Paris) and of the journalistic field on the production of a dominant representation of « trouble-spot ». The second part looks at how the journalists work in these areas and the way their sources (policemen, sociologists, municipalities, associative actors, social workers, and so forth) attempt to become part of the production process of news items. The third part deals with the different procedures implemented in two council block areas, in the aftermath of journalistic scandals in which they are involved. In order to deal with journalists, the reactions range from creation of communication cells by the local municipalities, attempt at controlling the speech of the young generation through the elder brothers, local associations' concerted endeavours at offering a unified vision to the media, and even cases of physical aggressions against journalists in order to forbid their access to the area. It is because the media provide powerful instruments in the making of reputations that such controlling reactions occur ; such a phenomenon illustrates the-paradox according to which the more media coverage a domain receives, the less journalists themselves produce the information

This thesis focuses on new digital production practices and the sharing of information online, through current issues related to digital social media. While having as a subject of study the online video hosting platform YouTube, the general objective of this research is to understand how the configuration of digital interfaces online carries this remediation of the amateur social and political discourse, more specifically, how YouTube as a media allows the content management of many politicized contents, in addition to or in competition with traditional news channels. Methodologically, the analysis focuses on the discursive and social practices of Youtube's actors, through the prism of discourse and visual semiotics. The discourse analysis is multiple as the research project tries to define the discourse within the Youtube discussion space, and alongside, the discourse of the content producer, the YouTuber. Indeed, for André Gunthert, the discussion space is a dynamic and evolutionary space, since it depends on the evolution of the content of the video and/or the image. Finally, a third analysis, that of the typology of the participants interviewed during « comprehensive interviews », highlights how audiovisual grammar largely dominates the «sacral» one of writing on social media. All these elements contribute to the definition of the YouTube culture and provide a new perspective on social media in the field of communication studies

Social-digital networks are linked to the user-receiver activity theorized by the Columbia school. The link between the media system and the social system that the Columbia school anticipated seems all the more relevant with the collect of information via social networks. Henceforth, the media must reckon with social networks and consequently with users-receivers. By sharing information, each user-receiver can become a short-term opinion leader. The one-off act of sharing materializes this new filter which symbolizes the passage to the second step flow of communication. Sharing is therefore the circumstantial reification of personal influence which transforms the user-receiver into an opinion leader. In this 2.0 user-receiver model of the new media digital-social networks ecosystem, 2.0 opinion leaders can be compared to opinion sharers. In order to understand the situations of opinion influence at work in circulation and reception activities, the information filter processes will be studied by taking up the structural elements of the model proposed by the Columbia school. We are interested in what "real people of everyday life" choose and do with media on social-digital networks, like the Columbia school which was interested in the people's choice and in particular in the part played by people in the flow of mass communications. The objective of this research is thus to transpose this Columbia model to the context of social-digital networks in order to update it and redefine, within it, the notion of opinion leader whose acceptance has been altered. Our contribution is therefore that of a social analysis of human communication of information via social-digital networks
Alibakhshi, Reza. "Essays on User Engagement in Social Media : understanding the Influence of Emotions." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Jouy-en Josas, HEC, 2022. http://www.theses.fr/2022EHEC0003.
My thesis focuses on investigating the role of different aspects of emotions in influencing social media (SM) user engagement. In particular, I investigate how various emotional attributes of SM content, which are enabled by novel SM capabilities, influence user engagement with various types of content such as text, image, and video. The first essay examines the influence of dissonance between the sentiments embedded in the visual and textual content of multimodal SM posts on user engagement. In this essay, I leverage cognitive dissonance theory to propose the construct of sentiment dissonance and empirically examine its influence on user engagement with SM posts. Building on the SM post-level analysis of the first essay, the second essay investigates the SM profile-level time-varying attributes of emotions alongside their SM post-level attributes. Specifically, I examine the influence of dynamic emotional variation across SM profiles through the tenets of emotion dynamics theory and affect theory of social exchange to evaluate the influence of time-varying features of emotions in SM profiles on user engagement. By so doing, I intend to better understand the influence of dynamic and static emotional attributes in SM profiles on the magnitude and longevity of user engagement with SM posts. Extending prior essays to the novel context of SM video advertisement, the third essay leverages the time- varying attributes of emotions to examine the mechanisms through which the continuous emotional expressions in advertisement videos influence user engagement. Specifically, building on emotion dynamics and capacity theory of attention, I examine the variability and predictability of emotions in SM advertisement videos through constructs of emotional variability and emotional inertia. The findings of this study will help us better understand how the emotional attributes of videos impel users to watch and engage with the advertisement videos
Idelson, Bernard. "La presse quotidienne régionale, P. Q. R. , acteur social local : analyse d'un discours de presse : le cas du "Quotidien de La Réunion", 1976-1997." La Réunion, 1999. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00468911/fr/.
The main objective of this doctoral thesis is the analysis of the role of a regional daily newspaper as a local social actor within a particular society: Reunion Island. More precisely, the present work is a monograph on le "Quotidien de la Réunion", in the context of a 21 year period (1976-1997). Within the general theoretical framework which has been adopted in order to make this case study, one is interested in the questions of the + building up; of events and news and of how newspapers deal with social movements and actions. In order to confirm the hypothesis that a local paper does fulfil a role of social actor facing social movements, we have applied the methods of discourse analysis to journalistic forms. This methodology may be regarded as essentially inspired by semiotics. We have analysed a corpus of articles and compared the accounts (by "Le Quotidien") of three movements : (I) the strong desire to save the + young ; "Quotidien" in 1977, (II) the support given to Télé Freedom in 1991 and (III) the demonstration of civil servants and students in 1997. The analysis of the argumentative and rhetorical processes which are specific features of the paper's editorial strategy permits us to ascertain its value system and its positions on the local scene, and also to emphasize certain contradictions and discrepancies between its editorial principles and its journalistic practices

This doctoral dissertation investigates how unions may revitalize by moving from existing ‘solid’ organizational models to new ‘liquid’ forms, characteristic of organizations heavily structured by information and communication technologies. More precisely, it studies how unions, understood as social movements or democratic organizations, may effect such a model transformation. To answer this question, we explore three cases of union renewal attempts in North America. The three chapters of this dissertation rely on mixed methodologies, combining interviews with both qualitative and quantitative data harvested from social media. Our empirical investigations comprise one case of union liquefication failure and two cases of successfully fluidified unions. Chapter one discusses the case of a union which failed to renew its democratic model by introducing social media. This failure is centrally attributable to the invasion of the union Facebook group by ‘trolls’, which disrupted the union’s existing democratic process. The concept of a monstrification process is then proposed to make sense of this brutal and noxious confrontation between two democratic approaches, namely the union's existing solid model and the new liquid model realized through social media. Chapter two discusses an original type of collective action adopted by the US Fight for 15 labour movement. We introduce the metaphor of ‘flash mob unionism’ to describe this renewed and semi-liquid form of collective action, in reference to the contemporaneously emerging genre of artistic performance. Chapter three compares the success factors of two large-scale labour movements: Fight for 15 and OUR Walmart. We suggest that these two movements succeeded because they both moved from a solid ‘organizing’ paradigm to a more liquid ‘networking’ one. This dissertation contributes to the literature on unionism renewal in three ways. First, it suggests three metaphors (the monster, the flash mob, the network) to make sense of the process of union transformation from a solid to a liquid model. Second, it suggests different factors which may facilitate or inhibit this transformation process. Third, it evidences the potential for enrichment of industrial relations and organization studies inherent in methodological approaches based on social media data
Joly, Maria Esperanza. "Diplomatie culturelle - Diplomatie publique : approche communicationnelle et étude comparée des enjeux et des pratiques entre la France et la Colombie." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015AIXM5908.
The research is about the places and roles played by cultural and public diplomatic practices in France and Colombia. These practices are the answer to the issues raised by the global economy and the multipolar world, particularly those concerning the connection to and the representation on the international scene.Diplomatic communication practices within models called “hybrids” stress the importance of the multi-dimensional relations between culture/marketing, culture/history, and culture/politics. This relationship can be observed in a diplomatic manner and in a way that the image of a country (marketing /strategic communication: nation branding) is managed and its national identity (communication /culture) is diffused.Due to France and Colombia's own characteristics, and their different geo-cultural positions, the author sets her analysis in the form of theories which associate culture and communication as seen in European research, by comparing them to Latin American research. The qualitative and interpretative method is privileged as it focuses on an internet corpus. This comprehensive method is used in an investigation made from interviews in each country. The analysis is about the strategies and the converging and diverging points of each model country. It also emphasizes the tensions due to different levels of communication practices (both strategic and operational) among the institutional actors studied herein. This study shows the power relationships between the two countries and also the relationships and interaction inside their own communities (civilian society), which are stimulated by social networks

The title of our thesis is: “The Lebanese citizenship grappling with the new and traditional Medias, facing religious and community conflicts; amplifications or reductions of fractures?” Our thesis in the first place is a question asked about multiculturalism which constitutes the Lebanese society, specifies it, and represents sociocultural and sociopolitical wealth which interests the Information and Communication Sciences. The Audiovisual and Electronic Media (Web Sites, Electronic Newspapers, Internet Blogs, etc.) will be the source likely to feed all these cultural, political, economic, ethnic and religious faces.Since a long time, the Lebanese politically confessional reality is more or less impregnated by the traditional Media, and recently the new Media or Web Sites. The Lebanese structure of citizenship would be based in priority on four fundamental conditions: Community, Media, Citizen and State. The Lebanese Citizen belongs by nature to a community in which he is bound to others by bonds of religion which gives the Lebanese a particular feeling of identity. Thereby, the religious community, always seeks to defend itself and to express itself in order to preserve its existence and its continuity, and this is done by the Media: each community has its own media, which is its spokesperson. Thus, the community mediatized with all its rites and political-community convictions occupy the forefront of Lebanese concerns. While the principles of citizenships and state for a large number of Lebanese occupy the secondary rank.It is in this area that we will analyze during our research the contemporary face of public opinion possibly enlightened by the new technology of communication, the opinion mediatized as well as the politico-social vision presented by the daily newspapers

Our research aims to study argumentation in the TV news, from a body of broadcast reports and interviews concerning the suburban crisis occurred in November 2005. By choosing this event, we want to approach a case of controversy, negotiation and intervention in a political and social conflict through its treatment within the information media discourse, which means in a situation of communication characterized by constraints and strategies. The study compares the argumentation of the news aired on the channels TF1 and France 2 about three themes: the causes of the riots, the controversy about the curfew, and the calls to stop the violence. The components of argumentation (questioning, positioning, arguments) are analyzed by each speaker. After a quantitative study identifying the main lines of the speeches as their specific communicative aims, further we try to consider what are the specificities of the argumentation within the information media discourse, on what conditions does the commentary determine the imposition of the speech of an interviewed speaker, what are the types of confrontation between the different speakers, what are the different ethos of authority involved in the speech, and finally, what are the global topics represented by the commentaries, specifying the particular tendencies of every channel

Written communication technologies and digital language are the keys that have opened the space for reflection on the impact of such technologies and type of language on the writings of francophone college and high school students. The age of these young people, which corresponds to the period of adolescence and its physiological transformation, as well as the emergence of technological evolution and the invasion of digital media (notably "the smartphone") played a role in the modification, at least partially, of the French language, particularly in the field of school writing. The act of writing is no longer considered as regulated, on the contrary, it has become oral-oriented, without rules, grouping together sound and writing and responding to the editorial desires of adolescents. On the other hand, certain variations in this new act of digital writing are not created from vacuum, they trace back to forms of writing formerly used in traditional writings, which constitutes one of the important points of the subject of our research. The impact of the use of digital tools on the quality of language, especially spelling, is often considered by the general public as harmful. In general, our object is defined through the studies carried out around this subject which did not affirm the absolute negativity of the new numerical language on the productions of writings of the students, which is why certain suggestions are indicated for better learning of language

Children are the most important value and future of a society. However, today, one of the important societal problems in Turkey as well as in the problem of marriage of underage girls. The aim of this thesis is firstly to look critically at the marriages of underage girls in Turkey to find out its reasons and results and reveal the experiences of women who married before age of 18 and how these women perceive the child marriage problem. Secondly, it is aimed to analyze related news in Turkish print media and across Twitter posts and to find out how the media reflects this problem and if these news reports and Twitter posts’ discourses correspond to the discourses of the women in question. The thesis consists of two types of field research. In the first stage of the research, a face-to-face, semi-structured interview is conducted with the women who married before their age of 18. In the second research, related news reports in Turkish print media and posts on Twitter are examined. Finally, the findings of two types of research are compared. This thesis, which is based on feminist framework theoretically, consists of five main chapters. In this study, the relation between the way that these underage married women identified themselves and statements of media are investigated. In this regard, the study aims to make a contribution to the literature in terms of discussing the problem from the sociological perspective and it is hoped to make contribution to the solution of the problem to decrease the number of underage married girls in Turkey
Rennes 2, 2000. http://www.theses.fr/2000REN20053.
The transsexual is a person whose sex does not correspond to what (s)he feels it should be. Admitting that transsexualism is a rare phenomenom still even today, we must understand that some individuals of ill-defined orientation would not have thought about transsexualism, if they had not encountered it in their environment. Transsexualism makes possible what might otherwise have remained a fantasy. The availability of medical treatment is promoted and encouraged by the media : the idea is that you can make a woman out of a man and the other way around. Moreover, we wonder whether it is right to legislate in favour of these persons, as this entails the risk that the number of requests for a change of sex for legal purposes might rise. This led us to question risks involved in a request for such a change in the psychological structure, but rather a broad syndrome. So there are considerable differences among the transsexual population. Fieldwork undertaken at various observation points and among different categories of people involved with the transsexual question enabled us to compare theory with clinical experience

Body representation is the set of cognitive functions that track the state of the body. It is involved in a variety of situations, such as the perception of the physical dimensions of the body, action, and the generation of attitudes towards the body. To perform these functions, it relies on the flexible use of a range of sensorimotor information, as well as on the individual's beliefs, expectations and emotions. Among the sources of information available about the body, social influence can be a risk, maintenance, and severity factor in body image distortions. However, while social influence on the attitudinal aspects of body representation is well established, there is little experimental evidence of such influence on its perceptual aspects. The aim of this thesis is to study the integration of social information into the perceptual dimension of the representation of body size. To this end, we conducted a series of experiments with young women, a demographic that is particularly prone to distortions of body representation. A first axis focuses on interpersonal influence by testing the effect of weight labels on perceptual judgments. To investigate their informational influence, we manipulated the reliability of multiple cues to study how they were combined. Our results indicate that weight labels have a limited influence on judgments of body size. A second axis focuses on another type of social influence, media influence. Visual overexposure to specific body types is associated with body dissatisfaction, and could help explain the perceptual and attitudinal distortions of body representation. In this context, visual adaptation to bodies could explain how prolonged exposure to thin bodies can lead to an overestimation of one's own body size. We tested some of the hypotheses of this adaptation theory of body image distortion. These experiments highlight some limitations of the adaptation account; in particular, it is uncertain whether adaptation effects can influence the representation that individuals have of their own bodies. In conclusion, our results suggest that the perceptual dimension of the representation of body size may be resistant to some types of interpersonal and media social influence

The identification of a A(H1N1) type of flu virus in 2009 prompted the French State to organize a national immunization campaign which generated several controversies. Discussion of the subject on pandemic vaccines' safety is distinctive because of its focus on the behavior and beliefs of "the French". Through interviews, media content analysis and a review of surveys on pandemic vaccination behavior, this dissertation sets out to understand how the subject of pandemic vaccines' safety emerged in the news. Ln addition to the study of interactions between the usual actors involved in public agenda-setting (public health authorities, social movement actors and journalists), this dissertation will show that the population played a central role in this process. This role is evident in the ambivalent representations of the population at the heart of these actor's communication strategies. They drew upon these representations when justifying their position on the subject. But, more importantly, opinion polis and other devices used to interrogate parts of the population played a crucial role in the valorization of this subject by these different actors. These devices turned the population into a full-blown actor in this agenda-setting mechanism. Consequently, the explanatory framework of this thesis will articulate perspectives originated in the sociology of public problems with those of the sociology of representations

In this work, our interest is focused on satellite television as a tool for information and communication in the Arab world. The Arab media landscape has undergone major transformations in particular with regard to television with the advent of satellite TV channels. Our approach is multidisciplinary rather with references within rather information science and communication, and political science. The articulation of concepts within these two disciplines is needed to address the issue of this work regarding the role of satellite television in the creation of a public space in the Arab world. We use the analytical descriptive method, combined with a comparative interpretative technique that will allow us to understand and interpret the results from the analysis of media content delivered by the four chains involved in this work. This method of survey interviews allow greater visibility and a better understanding of political representations constructed by the media through speech mediators in the areas studied

This thesis focuses on the influence of alcohol sport sponsorship and alcohol consumption in movies on implicit attitudes towards alcohol. Few researches have focused on the mediating psychological mechanisms between exposure to alcohol promotion in media and long-term consumption. Our hypothesis is that evaluative conditioning through affect misattribution mediatizes the effect of exposure to alcohol stimuli on implicit attitudes toward alcohol. The effect of two other automatic processes (i.e. mere exposure effect, association with the self) are also studied. Two studies (1 and 2) were led to test an induction that (i) impairs controlled processes and (ii) maximizes affect misattribution by inhibiting attentional control in an evaluative condition paradigm. Three studies on alcohol sponsorship were then led in which we found a main effect of on implicit attitudes (studies 3 and 5). A mere exposure effect was observed in the study 5, but we found no convincing evidence for evaluative conditioning (study 4). However, we found an evaluative conditioning effect in two studies on alcohol consumption in movies and TV shows which was shown to be independent from association with the self (study 6), as well as relying on controlled processes (study 7). Overall, sponsorship effects on implicit attitudes seems to occur via a mere exposure effect, while alcohol portrayals in movies seems to impact implicit attitudes toward alcohol through evaluative conditioning and association of alcohol with the self

Work demands and their consequences on employees' quality of life are a current issue. Therefore, the reflexion about managerial practices should be deeply investigated. The three main objectives of this research deal with the conceptualization, the measurement and the prediction of wokplace social support (WSS) influence. The theorical reflexion is based on three points (1) Stressors (work demands ; role conflict and ambiguity ; and work family conflict) are a first key that leads to (2) a reflexion about organizational practices. (3) We analyze the influence of WSS in theorical models in which work stress, burnout and organizational comitment are integrated. The issues related to social exchange process and supervisor support challenges are pregnant in hospitals. In order to achieve our research, we first present a WSS dyadic approach. Analysing 60 interviews with nurse managers, nurses and nursing aids we highligth the emotional dimension of support. By the way, we aslo that supervisor support and team support are different. Then we develop a double perceived WSS psychometric scale. This step leads us to focus on the difficulty to specify the distinction between professional support (esteem etc. ) and personal support (related to individual problems). Finally, the last part emphazes the advantages of Partial Least Squares Regression to identify significant factors. Thus, although professional support provided by managers is negatively related to emotional exhaustion, we found that personal support increase the emotional dimension of burnout. Nevertheless, personal support is strongly and positively related to affecttive commitment. Finaly, these results provide that WSS nature and WSS perceived influence are highly bounded

Large-scale societal threats, such as the terrorist attacks, the economic crisis and global warming have become omnipresent in our society because of their extensive media coverage. The threat situation that acts as a disruption between people's representations and the reality leads to social sharing of emotions (Rimé, 2005). The social sharing of emotions constitutes the main impetus underpinning the propagation of threatening information from one person to another and from one social group to another. Thus, this thesis investigates the role of time and space as the primary brakes on the propagation of threatening information. The main aim of Study 1 is to investigate the meaning that people attach to the term "societal threat", and also to propose a classification of actual societal threats from the mass media and actual societal threats perceived by individuals in a French context. Study 2 examines the role of time as a brake on the propagation of threatening information following the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack of January 7, 2015 in Paris, using the social stage model of collective coping with disasters (Pennebaker & Harber, 1993). Study 3, which is experimental in nature, investigates the role of social space, and group membership specifically, as a brake on the propagation of threatening information related to terrorism. The results show that the frequency of the two main components of social sharing, namely talking and hearing, decreased over two months following the terrorist attack (Study 2). Furthermore, participants' group membership modifies the content of threatening information transmitted to the interlocutor (Study 3). Such results suggest that time and social space contribute to curbing the propagation of threatening information. However, future research might bear a specific interest on the other processes that impede the propagation of threatening information within society, thus elucidating the construction of a negative socioemotional climate

Hamdan, Hussam. "Sentiment analysis in social media." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015AIXM4356.
In this thesis, we address the problem of sentiment analysis. More specifically, we are interested in analyzing the sentiment expressed in social media texts such as tweets or customer reviews about restaurant, laptop, hotel or the scholarly book reviews written by experts. We focus on two main tasks: sentiment polarity detection in which we aim to determine the polarity (positive, negative or neutral) of a given text and the opinion target extraction in which we aim to extract the targets that the people tend to express their opinions towards them (e.g. for restaurant we may extract targets as food, pizza, service). Our main objective is constructing state-of-the-art systems which could do the two tasks. Therefore, we have proposed different supervised systems following three research directions: improving the system performance by term weighting, by enriching the document representation and by proposing a new model for sentiment classification. For evaluation purpose, we have participated at an International Workshop on Semantic Evaluation (SemEval), we have chosen two tasks: Sentiment analysis in twitter in which we determine the polarity of a tweet and Aspect-Based sentiment analysis in which we extract the opinion targets in restaurant reviews, then we determine the polarity of each target. Our systems have been among the first three best systems in all subtasks. We also applied our systems on a French book reviews corpus constructed by OpenEdition team for extracting the opinion targets and their polarities
Borges, Jorge. "Telenovelas brasileiras entre tradição e pós-modernidade ˸ um estudo do papel das beatas." Thesis, Paris 3, 2019. http://bibnum.univ-paris3.fr/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=323343.
This research resulted from the observation of the Brazilian telenovelas as a mainstream cultural product with such sui generis characteristics. The daily immersion in a fictional narrative, for over approximately eight months, places the public audience in the telenovelas’ environment and reaches a goal that goes far beyond just entertainment. The telenovelas showcase several aspects of society and they also play a role as a media to influence its behavior. If its artistic value of the telenovelas is subject to questioning, its power to influence its audience is certainly undeniable. Aware of this persuasive force, we took an interest in the role of the pious women characters in the propagation of religious metanarratives through the fictional societies in which they are portrayed. The methodological process begins with the analysis of the narrative setting with the purpose of understanding how the social relations of the characters are structured. Afterwards, the research verifies to what extent that simulacrum of Brazilian society reflects the social rules established in the country. The presence of the religious bigots in the plots and their actions as moral watchdogs made us be attentive to the use of the comicality of these characters as a way to denounce the hypocrisy and conservatism inherent to a moralizing and anachronistic discourse. The "bible-thumpers" of the telenovelas personify, in the figure of the woman herself, the propagating agent of a patriarchal metanarrative, which intends to obstruct any notion of any behavior or idea suggestive of women’s liberation or that distances a woman from the puritan and devout profile proposed by the religious discourse

Abstract: A study of the Spanish influenza epidemic of 1918 in the city of São Paulo has been made including the change that it caused in the daily life of the city; a well as the official and popular mobilization in the face of the catastrophe, especially the actions (and reactions) of the doctors in the face of the total failure of medical science to deal with the problem. The text recuperates aspects of a period in which practicioners of scientific medicine started to distance themselves, little by little, fTomthose who practiced other kinds of cures, developing an exclusive jargon and identifying the social space of the profession, gradually becoming ever more incomprehensible to the layman. Starting fTom the point of view that the paths of science are created and re-created by the social relationships of human beings, a study was made of the trajectories of various individuaIs in the unique period of the flu epidemic; this is followed by an attempt of medical knowledge as it generated by the society and transformed and sustained by means of social interactions, including those of patients, with their complaints and criticisms, and those people that had other kinds of knowledge about health and illness. The interactions included arguments and conflicts, as well as approximation and identification

Mohammadinejad, Amir. "Consensus opinion model in online social networks based on the impact of influential users." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Evry, Institut national des télécommunications, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018TELE0018.
Online Social Networks are increasing and piercing our lives such that almost every person in the world has a membership at least in one of them. Among famous social networks, there are online shopping websites such as Amazon, eBay and other ones which have members and the concepts of social networks apply to them. This thesis is particularly interested in the online shopping websites and their networks. According to the statistics, the attention of people to use these websites is growing due to their reliability. The consumers refer to these websites for their need (which could be a product, a place to stay, or home appliances) and become their customers. One of the challenging issues is providing useful information to help the customers in their shopping. Thus, an underlying question the thesis seeks to answer is how to provide comprehensive information to the customers in order to help them in their shopping. This is important for the online shopping websites as it satisfies the customers by this useful information and as a result increases their customers and the benefits of both sides. To overcome the problem, three specific connected studies are considered: (1) Finding the influential users, (2) Opinion Propagation and (3) Opinion Aggregation. In the first part, the thesis proposes a methodology to find the influential users in the network who are essential for an accurate opinion propagation. To do so, the users are ranked based on two scores namely optimist and pessimist. In the second part, a novel opinion propagation methodology is presented to reach an agreement and maintain the consistency among users which subsequently, makes the aggregation feasible. The propagation is conducted considering the impacts of the influential users and the neighbors. Ultimately, in the third part, the opinion aggregation is proposed to gather the existing opinions and present it as the valuable information to the customers regarding each product of the online shopping website. To this end, the weighted averaging operator and fuzzy techniques are used. The thesis presents a consensus opinion model in signed and unsigned networks. This solution can be applied to any group who needs to find a plenary opinion among the opinions of its members. Consequently, the proposed model in the thesis provides an accurate and appropriate rate for each product of the online shopping websites that gives precious information to their customers and helps them to have a better insight regarding the products

This thesis traces the self-evident and less obvious aspects of the process that led to the overthrow in Tunisia of th regime of President Ben Ali (November 7th 1987 - 14th 2011); it centers on the dynamics behind the conflict between the media and political apparatus and the civilian population. The uprising between December 2010 and January 2011 ended in the dismantling of Ben Ali's regime, due mainly to economic and political factors. This study highlights the failures that led to popular discontent. We center on a discursive viewpoint, observing and analysing the interaction between three components of the public space: the political, media, and citizen spheres. Throughout Ben Ali's rule of two decades, political power and the media blatantly collaborated so as to maintain the legitimacy of the President and his system. This pact also put aside citizen expression, rendering them mute, as they were reduced to an instrument of those in power. We then studied how they sought emancipation and to alter their limited role via a social psychology approach
