Abstract:
This work focuses on the tumultuous and rapidly evolving environment of Russian media and society, from the era of Gorbachev's reforms of glasnost to just before the 2003 – 2004 electoral cycle. Over this time, there have been three Presidents - Mikhail Gorbachev, Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin. Three leaders who have a different managerial style, although both Gorbachev and Putin have legal training, which seems to have some impact upon the way they try to manage a transforming society.

Abstract:
Given the importance of media in contemporary scene of politics, there is a pressing need to find a satisfactory framework within which to assess the ideological and political significance of media discourse. Following the 'affective' or 'emotive' turn in contemporary media studies, I take the factor of 'enjoyment' as the privileged focus of analysis of the ideology and political potential in media discourse. When approaching the political potential and ideology in the dimension of enjoyment in media discourse, I rely on the key concept of 'logic of enjoyment: The concept of 'logic of enjoyment' is developed from a combination of post-structuralist political discourse theory and Lacanian psychoanalysis. In this thesis, I have fleshed out three logics of enjoyment, namely, the perverse and the neurotic logics of enjoyment and the logic of political drive, to critically analyze and assess the political potential, ideology and the 'degrees' of ideology in the mediated and discursively constructed enjoyment. The thesis's primary objective, therefore, .is theoretical in character. Nonetheless, through a set of detailed case illustrations, I also make a modest contribution to our understanding of two empirical cases: the Red Shirt Army case of 2006 in Taiwan; and, to a lesser extent, the MPs' Expenses Scandal of 2009 in the UK.

Abstract:
This study seeks to undertake an analysis of the topic of 'science and the media' as it has been constituted in academic discourse since the end of the Second World War. It finds that concern has polarized in two distinct camps: The larger, participant in the traditional project of North American media studies, blames the press for what it perceives as a widespread and deleterious "scientific illiteracy" on the part of the laity. The more recent, indebted to critical developments in social theory, philosophy of science, and the study of mass communication, works to expose the assumptions on which press coverage of science has been based and the interests which have benefited.
The thesis argues that the adequacy of the dominant concern to its object of analysis is at best suspect, but that nevertheless its agitations have been chiefly responsible for the form which popular science has predominantly assumed.

Abstract:
The emergence of a new science paradigm has been identified. It is characteristically described as structuring an organic, holistic and ecological framework for understanding the nature of reality. The modern scientific paradigm with its characteristic underlying inorganic, reductive, and mechanistic vision of reality, discursively dominates Western societies' cultural sense-making with its attempts to unlock the 'mysteries' of nature. The radically different characteristics of the new paradigm science is linked to 'rising culture' articulated in the exploratory social change of alternative social movements. The holistic principles and ecological values found variously in the environment, feminist, and new age/holistic health, peace and indigenous people's movements link to the new paradigm. Both factual and fictional television texts engaging discursively with science, present a representational site for different cultural expression of the preferred meanings of ideology of two radically different paradigmatic frameworks.

Abstract:
It was in 1974 that Addis Ababa fistula hospital (AAFH) started caring for women with childbirth injuries. The hospital is located in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. It is the only hospital of its kind in the world dedicated exclusively to women with fistula repair—a condition common in developing world where the maternal health provisions are poor. It treats all patients free of any charge. The patients are usually the poorest of the poor, divorced, or abandoned by their husbands or partners ostracized by their parents and community as a result of obstetric fistula. It also provides a residential facility where patients with irreparable damage can live long term. It is a registered charitable non-governmental hospital run on donation because of the need of the women, and has proven success in treating this condition. For instance, the hospital gets aid from USAID and it has promised to keep supporting it too; that would help the hospital in improving maternal and child health mortality, which is the main goal of the millennium development.

Strenge, Gesine. "Mediated metadiscourse : print media on anglicisms in post-Soviet Russian." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/7547.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines attitudes towards anglicisms in Russian expressed in print media articles. Accelerated linguistic borrowing from English, a particularly visible aspect of the momentous language changes after the breakdown of the Soviet Union, has engendered a range of reactions. Print media articles spanning two decades and several central outlets are analysed to show how arguments for or against use of anglicisms are constructed, what language ideologies these arguments serve, and whether mediated language attitudes changed during the post-Soviet era. A summary of the history of Russian linguistic borrowing and language attitudes from the Middle Ages to the present day shows that periods of national consolidation provoked demands for the restriction of borrowing. Then, a survey of theories on language ideologies demonstrates that they function through the construction of commonsense argumentation in metadiscourse (talk about talk). This argumentation draws on accepted common knowledge in the Russian linguistic culture. Using critical discourse analytic tools, namely analysis of metaphor scenarios and of argumentation, I examine argumentative strategies in the mediated language debates. Particularly, the critical analysis reveals what strategies render dominant standpoints on anglicisms self-evident and logical to the audience. The results show that the media reaction to anglicisms dramatises language change in discourses of threat, justified by assumed commonsense rational knowledge. Whilst there are few reactions in the 1990s, debates on language intensified in the 2000s after Putin’s policies of state reinforcement came into effect, peaking around times of official language policy measures. Anglicisms and their users are subordinated, cast out as the Other, not belonging to the in-group of sensible speakers. This threat is defused via ridicule and claiming of the moral high ground. This commonsense argumentation ultimately supports notions of Russian as a static, sacred component of Russian nation building, and of speakers as passive. Close textual analysis shows that even articles claiming to support language change and the use of anglicisms use argumentation strategies of negativisation. Overall, a consensus on the character and role of the Russian language exists between all perspectives, emphasising the importance of rules and assigning speakers a passive role throughout.

Abstract:
Many Chinese car companies have attempted to invest in and purchase famous Swedish companies, which attracted a lot of attention of the media, particularly in Sweden and America. The investment is a complex transaction when companies from two countries are involved and are much different. This difference is the starting point for this study. This thesis aims to analyze the image of China in Swedish and American media. The study suggests that the representation of China in three newspapers is deeply rooted in ideology. Theories on media representation are applied and used in a qualitative analysis in order to present how the image of China is constructed. Through analyzing the twenty-five selected samples to explore how the media understood the Saab event and how they understood Chinese financial power. The main theoretical concept of the thesis is ideology, which is used to analyze the potential meanings of the Swedish and American notions of China. The findings show that both positive and negative images of China were portrayed by Swedish and American media. Furthermore, Chinese political leaders played an important role in the economic activity were also a central theme.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the values in the TV-series called Star Trek from a political perspective. Star Trek is an American science fiction-series that was created byGene Roddenberry during the mid-1960s. The queries are about whether or not political values are expressed in Star Trek, what political ideology is coherent with those, and if it is possible to interpret this as if Star Trek has an actual politically ideological fundament. Media power over content has been discussed, and because of this there has been made use of critical media theories together with theory of agenda setting and message. The political ideologies of conservatism, liberalism and socialism have been chosen to be compared with the material of analysis.Seven episodes of the original series have been chosen to get a good view of the material by the use of hermeneutic and qualitative research methodology. The analysis was done with the narratological actant model plus a method based on critical media theory, where quotes are being extracted and interpreted. The results have been categorised as either relating to economics, view of mankind or structure of society. The examination shows that there are both positively and negatively described values in Star Trek. No distinct political ideology is being clearly advocated, but there are tendencies for negative views of conservative values aswell as a positive coherence with democratic socialism. The results were difficult to conclude, and this could point towards that the media companies have big influence over their transmitted contents, and that it is difficult to consistently highlight politically ideological values in a television series like Star Trek. This is because the format of TV-series set by american commercial interests puts certain demands on productions. There are reflections about that political values in a medium of entertainment could be effective since the political messages are not in focus but received indirectly.

Abstract:
The final months of 2017 have witnessed the birth of a movement, the #Metoo movement, which started after several Hollywood actresses have accused famed producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment. The movement is an ongoing prevalent phenomenon on social media where its aim is to demonstrate the frequency and widespread of sexual harassment in all sectors of work, whereas the movement Media has been widely reporting on the movement and has given a platform to several women to speak their truths. In my research, I aim to conduct a comparative study of how three mainstream media outlets have covered the moment on their websites. The media outlets chosen are Aljazeera, BBC and CNN. The theoretical framework for the study will revolve around theories of representation, power, and to help in understanding how mainstream media represents the #Metoo movement on their news websites A total of 15 articles will be analyzed through a Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis. The study concluded that the #Metoo movement is represented through a constructionist approach, and there are minor differences between the three distinctive international mainstream media news websites.

Schulthies, Becky Lyn. "The Social Circulation of Media Scripts and Collaborative Meaning-Making in Moroccan and Lebanese Family Discourse." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/194677.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation tracks the social circulation of media scripts and collaborative meaning-making in urban Moroccan and Lebanese families' domestic conversations as ways in which the social imaginary of a differentiated pan-Arab audience imaginary is performed. Media scripts refer to television input or information circulated through entextualization processes, embedded direct and indirect quotations framed by a particular discussion, in household dialogues. They include stories, statistics, historical dates, anecdotal observations, music tunes, quotes, iconic units of language varieties and their attendant identities that Moroccan and Lebanese families managed in interpretive discussions. Scripts are easily detached and mobile sound bites that serve on an affective level as possible identity performances. I argue that Fassi Moroccan and Beiruti families are interpretive communities created and who participate in creating a culture of circulation, which is not just about the objects moving through a culture, but the means, methods, and mechanisms of transmission and interpretation built around and negotiated by the members of that community (Lee and LiPuma 2002). Collaborative in this dissertation draws on the Bakhtinian concept that all interaction involves interlocutors, whether present or not, and a set of interpretive conditions affecting meaning (Bakhtin and Holquist 1982:424). Although the social imaginary of an Arab audience is perceived as unitary enough to merit regional satellite programming, the performances of Moroccan and Lebanese families illuminate the differentiated and fractured construction of a pan-Arab cultural project. Through domestic media ethnography of pan-Arab and national entertainment, talk shows, and news programming reception, I explore functional literacies tied to intervisual cues and the management of intergenerational authority; a pan-Arab language ideology that includes performances of multilingualism and shifting identity alignments linked to specific features of linguistic varieties encountered via television; and the link between language, gender, and confessionalism in morality evaluations of gendered media representations. I focus on the everyday domestic contexts, linguistic mechanisms, and discursive frameworks activated by Moroccan and Lebanese families in media engagements.

Abstract:
I study the role that facial expressions play in determining political ideology. I have collected 20,475 assessments of politicians representing 14 countries. Based on a dataset captured from 1821-2015, our results imply that the facial expressions of politicians do play a significant role in the explanation of their ideology. Controlling for positivism of expressions model confirms this general picture: Democratic regime politicians have a tendency to express positive emotions since they are in principle selling the future. Autocratic regimes are mostly trying to exert fear and the facial expressions of dictators are non-positive. We also find that evaluation of the regime is negatively correlated with TV broadcasting in some countries. Accordingly, we can claim that voting perception and behavior is guided by the pictures and videos which are delivered via television.

Abstract:
Whitewashing entails the practice of whitening or altering an historical or fictional characters of colours with the casting of white actors. The lack of diversity in today’s media landscape highlight the importance of problematizing such representational practice usage and effects. This study therefore examines the discourses and meanings found in whitewashed characters from selected scenes in the films Dr Strange and Prince of Persia. The study used the theoretical approach of Richard Dyers “Whiteness”, Edwards Saids “Orientalism and Stuart Halls “Representation and Stereotype “to gain a diverse perspective on the practices of representation. The applied methodological approach of Fairclough Critical Discourse Analysis enabled hidden and unspoken messages to be brought forth and discussed accordingly to the theoretical frames. The study found that the “whitewashing” is an excursion of symbolic power in which it is used to ultimately maintain and produce whiteness as the norm.

Abstract:
This study looks at how professional male athletes—particularly undersized athletes—are represented throughout televised sport. Based on the assumption that televised sport is a gendered and predominantly masculine genre, the focus of this analysis is to demonstrate whether or not professional male athletes are evaluated differently based on physical stature, and whether or not such representations reinforce a dominant—mythic—male ideology. Grounded mainly in Gramscian hegemony and Peircean semiotics, the subsequent analysis compares broadcast commentary and visuals taken from the 2010 men’s Olympic ice hockey tournament and the 2010 men’s FIFA World Cup. In both events, it was generally found that taller athletes were praised more positively than smaller athletes. These findings appear to support common sports-related stereotypes, such as, the apparent media-reinforced expectation that professional male athletes be almost inhuman, mythical representations of ordinary men, i.e., the best athletes should be large, intimidating, aggressive, and hyper-masculine symbols.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis attempts to explore the discursive construction of Olympic ideology in the 2008 Torch Relay news coverage by the British and the Chinese media. It applies a corpus-based Discourse-Historical Approach in Critical Discourse Analysis (DHA-CDA) to analyse how and why the complexity, contradiction and conflicts in linguistic interpretations of Olympism are demonstrated by the media discourse between East and West. This study first focuses on the underpinning ideology and the study of the media, considering the historical development of Olympic ideology (Olympism) along with the respective mainstream ideologies in Britain (Liberalism) and China (Harmony), as well as the philosophical foundations and prominence of CDA. It then draws on the elaborated analytical approach-corpus-based CDA-in detail to analyse four specially constructed corpora drawn from the China Daily, BBC News and The Guardian. Thereafter corpus techniques including frequency and concordance analysis are applied and results obtained that reveal comparative differences and diachronic shifts across the corpora. Having first described the data, they are then interpreted in their linguistic contexts, and subsequently explained in the broader historical and socio-political contexts surrounding the dynamic life of the Olympic Torch Relay. This study demonstrates that there are contrasting expressions of Olympic ideology in the media discourse of the two countries. At a deeper level, this social practice is revealed to be dominated by the mainstream ideologies of the hosting and participating nations, which have been entrenched throughout their respective histories. The involvement of Britain and China in Olympic history and the relevant socio-political events surrounding the 2008 Torch Relay are explored in order to inform our analysis. The conclusion to this thesis reinforces its significant contribution to the study of Olympism. The Olympic philosophy of integrating diversified ideologies was certainly not manifest in the confrontation between the eastern and western media in 2008. Liberalism and harmony had never confronted each other face to face on the world stage before or attempted to find a common ground on which to coexist as revealed in this study. Based on this, respect for and tolerance of diverse ideology, history and culture will hopefully promote the solidarity and prosperity represented by Olympism in the new era.

Abstract:
This research aims to check the relation between men and society through language. Thus, we have analyzed fait-divers magazines which used to be published both in Brazil and Portugal in the year of 1968- such as O Cruzeiro e Flama. Specifically, we have tried to detect the polyphony and the dialogism in those magazines so as to reveal the ethos of the issues, of the writers of such magazines and also of the people involved in the narrated facts. However, the polyphony did not detect the ideology of each publication which can show a certain obedience to the censorship imposed by the two countries in that time or else it can show options and interests of the owners of the magazines mentioned above. The research was based not only on the theory of French discourse analysis but also on some auxiliary linguistic theories which focus on the interaction and on certain authors like Bakhtin, Charaudeau and Maingueneau. The study of these theories has offered a chance to (re) view the importance of such a remarkable year in terms of changes of behavior, and also in terms of politics. Through the magazines it was possible to trace a historical route of that year in both countries. Taking into account the categories cited, the analysis provided an ample vision of each magazine. We have concluded that much of what happened in 1968 had not been clearly ideologically defined in both publications.

Yuan, Xijia. "Understanding the Effects of Disgust and Political Ideology on Moral Judgment Through Photography." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2017. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/966.

Abstract:
Feelings of disgust may have effects on one’s moral judgment; specifically that experience of disgust has linked to increased severity of moral judgments. Additionally, one’s political beliefs may also affect one’s moral judgment, such as conservatives tend to make harsher judgment toward moral situations and behaviors. A 2 x 2 x 2 factorial quasi-experiment has been proposed to study 420 participants, legal adults from both conservative and liberal neighborhoods, randomly assigned to one of two conditions, disgust-eliciting versus neutral. Participants will view either four disgust-eliciting photographs or four neutral photographs, and then complete survey questions on disgust rating, moral judgment, disgust sensitivity, and political self-identification. It is hypothesized that, participants who identify as liberals, will feel less disgusted by the photos than conservative participants, and have more lenient moral judgment, whereas participants who identify as conservatives, will feel more disgusted by the photos than liberals, and have much harsher moral judgment.

Full text
Abstract:
September 11, 2001 presented the world with events that challenged its conception of reality and called into question current ideologies. In order to make sense of the attacks, people turned to the media for information and interpretation. My interest lies in the media’s role in shaping ideologies as a result of the events of September 11, 2001. I focus on the newspaper editorial because it, in particular, functions not only to report the news but also to interpret the news for the reader. My analysis is centred on the first reaction to the events in five ‘core’ editorials drawn, respectively, from an American, British, South African, Zimbabwean and Kenyan newspaper. The specific focus, in each case, is the representation and evaluation of social actors, the events themselves and the schematic structure of the editorial. I adopt a critical perspective through the use of Critical Discourse Analysis, supported by Systemic Functional Grammar and APPRAISAL. This perspective involves three inter-connected stages of analysis: a Description of the formal discourse properties of each editorial; an Interpretation of the prevailing situational context; and an Explanation of the sociohistorical context in each case. Language, being a form of social practice, is a means by which power relations in society are reproduced or contested (Janks 1997). By analysing the editorials’ discourse I identify whose interests are being served and how each text positions a reader’s attitudes and opinions. My analysis reveals the fact that the editorials distinguish between “us” and “them” groups for the purposes of advancing and confirming in-group ideologies and agendas. This is achieved in each case through comparing the paper’s ideology with the opposing ideology, which is presented as deviant and unsupportive of the in-group. My analysis of the African editorials, in particular, further reveals the exploitation of this division for the purposes of promoting and interpreting local political and social issues. Examination of the processes and conditions surrounding the production of the editorials shows how they are significantly influenced and constrained by the ideologies of both the writer and newspaper owner as well as by the situational context within which they were written. My analysis of the schematic structure of the editorials, in line with Bolivar (1994), reveals consistent use of three-part structures by which editorial opinions are evaluated. In concluding I provide suggestions, based on my research, for how critical language awareness can inform media education at high school level in South Africa. I argue that students should be equipped with tools, such as those I employed, to critically analyse and uncover how language is used to promote ideologies in the editorial of newspapers.

Abstract:
This paper is a case study of the British news media reporting surrounding the high court case Bell v. Tavistock with articles ranging from October 2019 to January 2021. The paper consists of a critical discourse analysis of the collected articles that discussed the case during this period. It’s based on Foucaults theories about discourse and Miranda Frickers concept of epistemic injustice to study how the different actors in the case, with a focus on transgendered individuals, have been portrayed in the media discourse. The paper has also looked at the ideological angles the british news media have had in their reporting and how they’ve chosen to portray the case.

Abstract:
This thesis examines Canada’s imposition of a visa requirement on visitors from the Czech Republic. By analyzing articles in three major Canadian newspapers, I conduct an Althusserian (theory that “culture ventures” are part of the Ideological State Apparatus), analysis. The thesis demonstrates that a dominant ideological viewpoint – a pro-capitalist ideology supported by a racist ideology – was evident in the coverage in all three newspapers. Additionally, this thesis addresses the presence of more ‘even-handed’ discussions of the conditions of the Roma, including experiences of racism and discrimination in the Czech Republic. I conclude that the newspapers present ideological views, with occasional exceptions.

Abstract:
This paper examines the interrelations of whiteness, gender, class and nationalism as represented in popular media discourses surrounding the coverage of the assault on Olympic ice skater Nancy Kerrigan and the investigation of her rival, Tonya Harding. As with other recent works that have refocused the issue of "race" on whiteness, this essay seeks to unveil the exclusionary social processes in which boundaries are set and marked within the "difference" of whiteness. The concepts of habitus and historicity are used to understand how Tonya Harding became marked as "white trash," and the implications of her "flawed" qualifications are explored. Furthermore, this paper identifies ongoing ideological struggles over moral regulation and reproduction of the nation and its subjects.

Abstract:
During the US presidential election in 2016, “fake news” became a well-known phenomenon, which was characterized by the deliberate spread of false or misleading information over theinternet and social media. False news is false or misleading claims intentionally presented asreal news. The development of internet and social media means that there is today adistinction between established and alternative media. To understand the phenomenon of fakenews, the study has investigated how the concept was affected by this media development. The purpose was to investigate how reporting on false news appears in established media andalternative media. The main question was: How is the concept of fake news constructed inestablished and alternative news media in Sweden? The study has used discourse analysis toinvestigate various discursive news reports of fake news, and how alternative media relate toother news media. The result shows that established media mainly have an internationaldiscourse while alternative media focus more on the national discourse. The result has beenanalyzed with theories of ideology, discourse analysis and framing. The analysis shows thatfake news is used by the news media as an ideological concept to show differences betweenestablished media and alternative media and the understanding of the term "fake news" isdependent on a global intertextuality.

Haj, Omar Husam. "Ideology, media and conflict in political discourse and its translation during the Arab Spring : Syria as a case study." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/15193/.

Full text
Abstract:
Translation, although often invisible in the field of politics, is actually an integral part of political activity. Which texts get translated, from and into which languages is itself already a political decision (Schäffner and Bassnett, 2010: 13). Translation has recently shifted its focus from the notions of originality and equivalence to those of power and patronage. This has proven essential, especially in relation to the translation of political discourse. Samuel Butler maintains that every person’s production, whether literature, music, pictures, architecture, or anything else, is a portrait of themselves. Translation is no exception. The translator’s role is no longer perceived as a transparent means of communication that is expected to relay the exact message of the original producer of the discourse. This thesis will view translation as a rewriting of the original text, recognising the translator as an author who modifies and changes the ST according to his or her ideology, political stand, or general interests. The translator is also foremost a reader who brings his or her own judgments, imposing them upon the text, perhaps reshaping the entire political discourse. Media outlets employ certain strategies and techniques to superimpose the media outlet’s agenda and objectives onto translations, promoting certain ideological convictions and political views. This thesis examines the relationship between a number of issues in relation to ideology, media, political discourse, language, and translation. Illustrative examples are extracted from the political discourse communicated during the Arab Spring. It uses Critical Discourse Analysis and narrative theory as a theoretical framework. It also aims to detect political tools and strategies often used in political discourse production and media discourse to analyse the data circulated on the Arab Spring. It seeks to look for the ideological influence of both translator and patronage on the outcome of the translation process. The data used for analysis in this thesis is taken from the political discourse communicated during the Arab Spring, in particular the Syrian revolution. The data corpus consists of translated interviews, political articles, and political speeches. Examples of revolutionary discourse produced by protesters are also included, alongside their translations. This is a qualitative study that lists and analyses representative samples of the translated political discourse, drawing conclusions and findings conclusions that apply to most of the data found in the context of the Arab Spring.

Feng, Wei. "An examination of Chinese pre-modern visual media, its influence on landscape ideology, aesthetics and relationship to landscape experience." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2005. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6072/.

Full text
Abstract:
In landscape history, visual media have played and are still playing very important roles in landscape design. Visual media work not only as tools in analysis, decision making and design presentation in landscape design process, but also more importantly as paradigms which influence landscape ideology and aesthetics. In contemporary landscape design and education, visual media has been gradually separated from profound landscape experience, especially via perspective-based drawing. The need to rethink perspective-based visual media, and some new insights on landscape experience became the context and motivation of this research. Through the study of three important visual media in pre-modern China landscape history (before the 20th century): map, landscape painting, and visual illustrations in prints, I attempt to highlight the influence of these visual media on Chinese landscape ideology, aesthetics and the development of landscape design profession. The strong connection between these pre-modern visual media and landscape experience is a central issue of this research. Via an exploration of spatiality, temporality and bodily experience in these pre-modern visual media, I aim to link pre-modern visual media and landscape experience to contemporary landscape theoretical discourse. Finally, through a comparative study on engaged seeing in Chinese pre-modern visual media and journey in landscape experience, I attempt to identify the performative feature of them and potential of connecting visual media and landscape experience.

Abstract:
This study focuses on how minorities are stigmatized in the French media. It limits itself to the case of the proposal of the denaturalization law and the consequent discourse about it. The subject is introduced through a short background on the law and its relevance to the possible racist nature of the debate, followed by some background on racism in France, an overview of the theory on new racism and how it can explain stigmatizating discourses. Critical Discourse Analysis is used as the method to uncover said discourses as it is a method related to the in-depth analysis of implicit dominant ideologies and power-structures. The study analyzes twenty articles from two French newspapers in order to determine how stigmatizing discourses are expressed. The results in the discussion show recurrent racist narratives that systematically denigrate and stereotype Muslims and immigrants. They also show a pattern of the dominant culture negating space to minorities.

Abstract

Purpose/Aim: To study how Piratbyrån argues for a free distribution of information and culture products and to find a possible ideological explanation for their argumentation.

Method/Material: I have used a rhetorical analysis to study and describe Piratbyrån´s website, a website that promotes free distribution of information and culture products. I have done so to find out how Piratbyrån argues for a free distribution and to find out what ideological foundation their argumentation is based on.

Main results: The main results of the study show that Piratbyrån uses a variety of rhetorical techniques depending on the subject and purpose of the analyzed text. Their main arguments both promote their own thesis and argue against the copyright industry. The main part of the argumentation is based on logical and factual arguments, but parts of it also rely on an emotional appeal to the reader’s heart in order to persuade. The analysis also showed great similarities between Piratbyrån´s argumentation and the ideology that Siva Vaidhyanathan describes as information anarchy. An ideology that promotes free distribution of information and culture products, that relies on decentralized systems and nonhierarchical structures and is a result of the technological development such as digitalization and peer-to-peer networks.

Abstract:
The social representations are characterized by being the object of Social Psychologi since they are mental, psychic, immaterial, fluid and changeable. The social representations belong to communities and social groups and are the result of socialization. They are present in the materiality of speech in symbolic representation. The social representations ass ideas that build concepts, which in turn are transformed into representations. The constituent elements of social representations are anchorage and objectification, ie, the ability to learn an idea, taking it from concreteness to abstraction, and the object that transforms an idea into a sing represented. There are several study skills to reach effectively the representations. Therefore we opted for semi-structured interview, by free association and the projective technique to come to an understanding of social representations from the owners on the process of sandization. In order to confirm that the mass media masterfully plays the role of propagating ideologies constructed by certain groups of representatives in speculative capital, articles have been analyzed for 21 years associated with the topic sandization in the newspapers Zero Hora and Correio do Povo, which were divided into three themes: sandization, eucalyptus and Stora Enso. By ideology we mean the set of ideas that aim to deceive the understanding and it was confirmed that many representations constructed by the media in question were formed by ideological representations. From the analysis of the results, six categories of social representations for spoken words were obtained by the technique of free association; four categories from the projective test, and two categories of representation to explain the way the respondents referred to the sandization process. Crossing these data we got to the representations that the owners built to the process of sandization present in the southwest of Rio Grande do Sul. As presented in the newspapers so massively the owners use the words desert and sand as if they were synonyms. However, unlike expressed in the media there is predominance of an alarmist and fatalistic speech. But there is a convergence on the papers presented with an eminently economic-productive focus. We were unable to fully, confirm all the research hypotheses, partly because some were confirmed while others showed no relation. The instructional level only proved to be important in the projective test. Having technical assistance converges on a more homogeneous discourse, but is still dependent on the ideological discourse expressed in the media. The action for the recovery in areas of sandization approaches the media propagated.

Abstract:
Dogville is a movie to which most people reacted passionately, whether in favor or against it. This dissertation approaches two aspects of this phenomenon. First, it provides a reading of the film that focuses on its contradictory principle. It is not only about the fact that some of it resorts to classic realism whereas some other aspects question this illusionism by deriving from a Brechtian inspiration. It is about understanding how this very contradiction is the heart and soul of the movie and how it is this that produces its content. Then, a reading of reviews published in wide circulation papers attempts to identify how these texts either address or ignore this contradiction, as well as the pre-conceptions that allow them to do so and that determine the analyses they produce.

The object of this thesis is to describe and interpret discourse about day care centers collected from journalistic texts published in the newspaper Folha de São Paulo from 1994 to 2009. This research integrates the Center for Research on Gender, Race and Age (NEGRI), of the Social Psychology Postgraduate Study Programe of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica in São Paulo. My thesis is based on the concept of child as a social actor, subject of rights, and of childhood as a permanent social group of the societies. We understand the children as active in their formation and development process, absorbing and producing acquirements/knowledge and contents of culture actively: as well as culture transforms the child, the child also transforms the culture. The theoretical frameworks used were the Social Childhood Studies and the Ideology theory by John B. Thompson. The latter states that the ways that the symbolic forms are produced, transmitted and received can create and maintain power relations systematically asymmetric. Symbolic forms are a wide range of speeches, actions, expressions which constitute significant constructions. This symbolic dimension and the meaning that it mobilizes also compose the social reality and participate actively in the construction of social relations. According to the approach of the studies about the construction of social problems, the definition of a social problem does not mean the reflex of its objective conditions, but results its construction from the ways they are understood and defined by society, permeates the projection of public feelings. Was made a research of journalistic texts by two keywords day care center children and day care center childhood , selecting those which mentioned the day care center directly. The underneath temporal limit was the initial date of publishment of on line journalist texts and the top limit was the date when both versions press and online got similar characteristics. After the qualifying exam, was made another research by the term day care center with the legal frameworks of childhood education. To describe dates we used techniques of content analyses proposed by Bardin and Rosemberg. We created five clusters of meaning: reduced visibility of the theme day care center; opacity in its characterization; rhetoric of complaint / attack in the context of crisis, absence of children, their voices, their personalities, their histories. There was a silence refractory, some omission, a speech very informative and formative. These talks produced and transmitted by the newspaper produced and maintained relations of domination of adults over children, they had produced ideology

Abstract:
The thesis examines John Thompson's Ideology and Modern Culture as an important contribution to the ongoing dialogue over models of the relationship between mediated communications and social order. The thesis argues that Thompson's contribution to communication theory lies in his development of one of the first successful attempts to integrate the strong orientation to meaning provided by interpretative theories into a comprehensive framework linking the situated interpretations of mediated communications to the idiosyncrasies of social ordering. Building on an evaluation of Ideology and Modern Culture's conceptual design, including its re-working of antecedents within communication, social and political theories, the thesis situates Thompson's project within the context of a post-interpretative turn concerned with the relevance and consequences of interpretation. In commenting on some initial limitations and weaknesses in this developing perspective, the thesis critically examines the dangers of over-emphasizing the significance of the interpretation of mediated meanings for the development of forms of action and for the construction of consequences.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the industry of non-profit educational filmmaking in Sub-Saharan Africa, from the 1930's to the present, with particular attention on the contemporary period of video production from the late 1980's to approximately 2010. This thesis, first, identifies that there is a consistent industrial infrastructure around non-profit educational filmmaking in Sub-Saharan Africa, which has not previously been articulated. Second, it describes the industry's historical origins and contemporary manifestation, delineating the pathways for funding, systems for production, and avenues of distribution and exhibition, as well as the ideological underpinnings of each. Finally, this thesis proscribes alternative industrial practices for the imagination and execution of non-profit educational videos that alleviate some of the otherwise deeply engrained hierarchical features of the industry by drawing on several examples of recent innovations in the industry. This thesis claims that the standard procedures by which non-profit educational films and videos in Sub-Saharan Africa come to be are problematic in the way that they maintain colonial hierarchies between Western philanthropic funders, cosmopolitan humanitarian professionals acting as producers, African casts and crews, and audiences that are necessarily objectified in order to be studied quantitatively. This structure has profound effects on content, most recently evident in neoliberal ideas that valorize the privatization of solutions to public health problems and quaint stories designed to encourage audiences to emulate ideal behavior based on Western gender norms as a primary solution to complex social problems, such as HIV/AIDS. Drawing on examples from recent innovations in the industry, this thesis finally proposes that changes in the balance of decision-making power in the African educational film and video industry - changes such as sourcing audiences for stories addressing HIV/AIDS, integrating with existing media markets, or more loosely providing international support to existing local initiatives that pinpoint local concerns - are necessary in order to better realize the potential of cinema to effectively address the myriad of social, environmental, political, economic, and medical challenges faced by real and distinct Sub-Saharan audiences.

Yun, Qidong. "Persistent powers : party politics, commercialisation, and the transformation of China s state publishing industry." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2011. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/9031.

Abstract:
China's media have undergone significant commercialisation since the introduction of the economic reforms initiated three decades ago. But how this process is unfolding is still not well discussed. Book publishing, the oldest media sector but the one least studied, has been in the forefront of media commercialisation and provides a useful vantage point for the investigation of this transformation. This thesis will examine the role of the party-state and the market during the commercialisation of state publishing, paying particular attention to the core processes of conglomeration and corporatisation and, since the party-state has also been decentralised, to the role of regional government. Drawing on original documentary research and primary data generated in an internship in a provincial publishing group, this thesis advances three main arguments. Firstly, that the process of commercialisation in publishing cannot be fully understood outside of the transformation of the wider economic and political context, especially the shift in the general organisation of industry and the evolution of party ideology. Secondly, that this process has been marked by persistent tensions and contradictions. And thirdly, that despite the ongoing commercialisation the publishing industry remains controlled predominantly by the party-state and is far from being a market-driven business. Decentralisation may have enabled local governments to gain strong control over the economics of local publishers, but the central party-state remains dominant on political issues.

Ph.D.
This dissertation critically examines televised narratives that depict illicit drug use, the drug trade, and the war on drugs across three different economic models of television. The commercial television industry in the United States has historically relied on an audience commodity, airing programs that primarily serve as the "free lunch" to entice viewers to watch advertisements (Smythe, 1977/1997). However, premium subscription cable networks such as HBO produce programming in order to sell the programming itself, and hence rely on content as the commodity. The dissertation compares the ideological content of the illicit drug-related narratives found on three platforms of American television: broadcast television; premium subscription cable; and basic cable, with channels that rely on a hybrid audience/content commodity (with a dual revenue stream from advertisers and per-subscriber fees). Relying on critical cultural perspectives, narrative and critical discourse analysis, and a sample of roughly 400 hours of television programming, the research demonstrates how drug-related depictions and narratives on television most commonly support and occasionally challenge dominant ideological assumptions about drug use and the moral appropriateness of drug prohibition policies. Further, the research shows that there are patterned differences in the representations, narratives, and ideological content based on the commodity form of the network for which the programming was produced.
