Wargo, Katalin. "Online Faculty Development: Disorienting Dilemmas In Learning To Teach Online." W&M ScholarWorks, 2021. https://scholarworks.wm.edu/etd/1627407585.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores how faculty development for online teaching in higher education might facilitate transformative learning and the transfer of instructional practices across teaching modalities. The first manuscript examines how the essential constructs of transformative learning are promoted in online faculty development and which elements of faculty development help to foster transformative learning. The second manuscript describes a case study that emerged from a university faculty development seminar to prepare instructors to teach online. The purpose of this study was to examine how, if at all, the Online Faculty Development Seminar changed five participants’ perspectives of teaching. This study found written reflection activities, combined with dialogue with colleagues, and having experienced instructors come in to tour their courses and discuss lessons learned contributed to perspective transformation. The third manuscript examines whether instructional practices introduced in the seminar would transfer to instructors’ in-person teaching and how faculty development and the experience of teaching online may have facilitated that transfer. The study found participants experienced perspective transformations that affected how they perceived their role as instructors, and they transferred some online course design and instructional practices to their in-person teaching. These practices included incorporating more digital tools to in-person courses, communicating clearly and transparently, designing courses with intentionality, and paying forward the lessons they learned to assist colleagues transitioning to teaching remotely in Spring 2020. Findings suggest that a structured course design process, self-reflection activities, opportunities to dialogue with colleagues, and course tours from colleagues aided in transfer of practices across modalities.

Volman, Hannah. "The Social Media Dilemma:Millennials Dealing With Data Tracking in a Mediatized Society."

Abstract:
Through its growing popularity, social media platforms have become influential in our society. Data tracking allows social media platforms to continue providing free and personalized services. Scholars and professionals have argued that data tracking can be harmful to individual privacy and can be used to change peoples’ behaviour without them being aware of this. This thesis focusses on how millennials deal with data tracking dilemmas in their social media use. As digital natives, millennials have grown up in a digital society, and therefor are often suggested to have a unique perspective on issues such as data tracking. This study is focused on why millennials use social media platforms, what dilemmas they identify regarding data tracking, how millennials act upon these dilemmas and how millennials reflect on their own behaviour compared to that of other generations. Based on 16 semi-structured interviews and 4 focus groups, this thesis relates the behaviour of Dutch millennials regarding data tracking and social media use to theories such as mediatization, platformization, the privacy paradox and media generations. This thesis finds that besides communication, entertainment and social engagement are also deeply shaped by mediatization and platformization. The participants identified three interrelated aspects of the privacy dilemma: the filter bubble, monetization and power. In acting upon these dilemmas, the behaviour of some participants confirms the notion of the privacy paradox. However, another group of participants indicated that they do not experience the dilemmas as such, and therefore do not act upon them. A last group of participants shared that they have found multiple ways in which to act upon the dilemmas they identify. This study thus concludes that the privacy paradox seems more nuanced than its conceptualization, because the participants find ways to deal with the dilemmas they identify.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how international development organizations are working to communicate campaigns and photographs from one cultural context to another. Additionally, will challenges in making campaigns which are both ethical appropriate and engaging be highlighted and discussed in relation to today’s impatient media landscape where globalization and development are dominated by economic interests. This research follows the international development cooperation We Effect and explore their whole media production process while making external communication from the work in Kenya to the target group in Sweden. The researcher has done interviews with decision makers at the head office in Stockholm, regional communicators in Nairobi, independent photographers and farmers in the fields of Kenya, visible in We Effect’s campaigns in Sweden. Additionally, ethnographical observations and diary notes contribute to answer the question how international organizations are planning, creating and distributing ethical and engaging media about development organizations long-term development work. In theoretical discussions, anchored in concepts about global culture, cosmopolitanism and how to mediate distant others, together with previous literature by Lilie Chouliaraki, Roger Silverstone and Stuart Hall, will this research state that there are several challenges in communicating messages from one cultural context to another. The distance, both geographical and mental, makes it challenging for the media producers and spectators to understand the same message; this research states that both the media producers and spectators’ interpretations of photographs and messages are dependent on their cultural background.

Alaminos-Fernández, Antonio. "An ideological conflict: the information about refugees in the European mass media versus the UNHCR communication campaign "Dilemmas"."

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to compare how the European mass media have presented the arrival of refugees to Europe, with an awareness campaign on this issue (Dilemmas). From this comparison several conclusions are obtained regarding the validity of the information provided by the mass media. In addition, I identify the key concepts to understand the logic followed by both the mass media and the communication for development campaign. In fact, the contradictions detected between the information of the mass media and the Dilemmas campaign seem to show an underlying ideological conflict, expressed in contradictory discourses. This research starts with the qualitative systematic review of several research reports that analyse the information that the European mass media offered about the arrival of refugees. The analysis of this information is carried out applying the concepts of Agenda setting and Frames. The two approaches have established the criteria used to systematize the comparison of the different research reports. After the analysis of the mass media, I analyze the UNHCR campaign on refugees, called "Dilemma". This communication campaign sought to raise awareness in Western societies about the refugee reality. The main objective is to know what concepts, elements and design are specific to this communication campaign, in contrast with the information about refugees that were reported by the media in the European Union. The structure of this research is as follows. After the introduction, the theories, models and methodologies used in this research are briefly presented: The Agenda Setting, Framing, as well as the methodology of Critical Discourse Analysis and Systematic review. The Systematic review will be used to integrate the research reports analyzing the information of the refugee crisis in the mass media. Second, the empirical part of the research is developed in four phases. In a first phase, the Systematic review methodology is used to integrate the research reports made in several European countries, analyzing the information on the refugee in the mass media. The Agenda Setting and Framing approaches are used in the Systematic review to systematize the findings of the research reports on the mass media. The conclusions of this first phase are used in a second phase to analyze the UNHCR campaign applying the Critical Discourse Analysis. To really understand the transcendence of the mass media information it is very important to compare its approach and its contents with those used by UNHCR. The contrast between the two allows greater ability to identify their specific characteristics. Finally, in the third and four phases some conclusions and reflections on the research outcomes are presented.

Safarov, Ronnie. "Framing Environmental Dilemmas: The Ethical Positioning of the Seal Hunt In Two Canadian Newspapers." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/39728.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to investigate how moral issues surrounding one of the lengthiest environmental conflicts – the Canadian seal hunt controversy - were communicated by two Canadian mainstream newspapers: the national Globe and Mail, and the Newfoundland-based The Telegram in 2009, the year in which the European Union banned the import of all seal products on the basis of a moral standard relating to the welfare of animals. At a general level, the purpose of this work is to examine how the news media construe and convey environmental ethical positions when dealing with complicated environmental issues. To this end, this thesis draws from media framing theory to implement a qualitative linguistic analysis of the 99 news articles to analyze how seals and sealers – the two main subjects of moral worth in this controversy – were framed in the two newspapers. The analysis found that seals were predominantly framed in accordance with their perceived social and economic benefit, largely overlooking animal welfare considerations. Sealers, on the other hand, tended to be portrayed as people of moral rectitude and brave seafarers, with a concomitant onus placed on the cultural and economic importance of sealing for Northerners. The findings corroborate claims that our perceptions of animal species, especially those which are considered wildlife, and the type of our relationship with them vary in accordance with human utility. At the same time, these perceptions are influenced by the social and cultural aspects of humans' relationship with the environment that may trump considerations of animal welfare and compassion toward sentient animals. Seen in the perspective of environmental ethics debate, the seal hunt controversy reveals the current lack of consensus on determining the most sound ethical principle in order to ensure our treatment of the environment is morally consistent. As the seal hunt controversy is not a standalone phenomenon of the protest based in animal welfare considerations, this thesis can be of value for the future research of comparable environmental controversies. Reconciling antagonistic environmental ethics is important for environmental policy-making and management, in order to ensure a greater and more productive stakeholder participation in solving environmental issues more effectively, while at the same realizing our moral obligations towards the animal world and the rest of the nature.

Abstract:
This essay follows a Media Teacher in her work as a coordinator and an artistic leader for a European project called Legalopoli concerning laws and ethics in a senior level school for 13-16 year-olds in Mora, Sweden. The students write film stories about how their characters have to make choices in ethical dilemma situations. Then the learners create interactive computer games together through practical film work. At the same time we can see how the educator also gets into difficult ethical situations, when she is working with the students. This forces her to self-reflection. She realizes that the practical knowledge in her work has a greater deal of an ethical dimension, than she earlier has been aware of. She understands that the convincing force in the project consists of the confidence and trust she has to create and develop among the students, who, in the start, were unsure and lacked in respect for one another. Through the practical film work they all get close and learn to see both themselves and each other. The students develop from being afraid of saying anything in the group to become confident and capable media producers, where their voices get listened to. They have started a journey into becoming democratic and caring citizens with wider perspectives of themselves and of the world.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to illustrate how civil society organizations reflect on and communicate for societal change. The aim is also to broaden the understanding of how norms and logics on social media platforms characterize communication and the discourse about social engagement. With a basis in discourse theory, the particular focus of the study is on identifying discursive themes, and conflicts that exist within these themes. The analysis draws upon critical theories about the power position and technical affordance of social media platforms, as well as perspectives on the political subject - individually and collectively. The analysis is based on in-depth interviews with representatives from six environmental organizations, two of which are newer network-based movements. The results show discursive nodal points such as autonomous, individual-based and political.  These partly gain their meaning through social media and technical affordances, which enable lower engagement thresholds, which in turn challenge the organizations’ ideas about long-term engagement. Political engagement is largely associated with online engagement, via social media, at the same time an opposite relationship shows that screen time takes focus from deepened or physical engagement. The results also show that organizations are aware of the power of social media platforms, where hidden algorithms and commercial logic contrast with the organizations’ visions, while at the same time the platforms play an important role for the organizations’ communication.

Abstract:
The topic of the present dissertation is teachers’ everyday dilemmas and the use of language to deal with these dilemmas. The concept of dilemma is compared to the concept of risk and the concept of paradox. The theoretical background consists of sociological systems theory and linguistic pragmatic theory. The empirical data consist of observations of teachers in everyday situations. The theoretical and empirical approaches are used to illuminate each other. Teachers’ ways of dealing with dilemmas are described as use of linguistic resources. Results show that dilemmas are complex social phenomenon that include global system media, trust and language use. Teachers face dilemmas as unpredicted clashes of conflicting expectations. The conflicting expectations come into view as global system media and local trust. The resources required in the constructing of trust and rationality shows how teachers are dealing with dilemmas. Teachers’ ways of dealing with dilemmas come into view as use of linguistic resources for logic and modality.

Abstract:

Flaugh, Jason E. "The psychological reactance dilemma| Effects of restricting workers' personal social media use." Thesis, Alliant International University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10006586.

Full text
Abstract:

U.S. organizations often employ deterrence mechanisms to regulate workers’ technology use, but such approaches are not always effective (Sommestad, Hallberg, Lundholm, & Bengtsson, 2014). The theory of psychological reactance (Brehm & Brehm, 1981) was explored as a potential explanation for the inconsistencies in the effectiveness of deterrence mechanisms. It was postulated that workers expect the freedom to use certain types of technology within the workplace and that restricting such use would result in opposition. This possibility was investigated in the context of intentions to use social media, a technology popular among U.S. workers.

A 3 (personal social media use restriction) x 3 (sanctions) between-subject experimental design was used to test the effect of restrictive personal social media use guidelines and sanctions on workers’ compliance and use intentions. U.S. workers (N = 715) recruited through MTurk completed an online survey in which they were randomly assigned to one of nine conditions. The IVs were manipulated through the use of vignettes. The DVs were measured using both scales modified from previous studies and newly constructed scales.

The results suggest that the average worker does not engage in freedom restoration when social media is restricted. Overall, participants were more compliant, had lower social media intentions, and social media’s valence was lowest when social media was restricted and sanctions were used. Explanations for the findings are provided with extensions to conservation of resource, deterrence, and justice theories.

Abstract:
In China, Weibo is a social software that almost everyone uses. Weibo does not only provide an arena for users to share their experiences with friends but also offers a platform for companies to promote their products. From 2014, the distributors of the films began to use Weibo as one of their main marketing tools. Nevertheless, from the same time, Chinese art films have begun to decline, and the most direct manifestation is the downturn in the box office. At the coincidence of the two time points, the decline of art films and the Weibo seems to be linked. However, there are still a handful of art films which achieved great success on Weibo in this 3-year period. In these cases, Weibo seems to be a fortune for these art films. The first part of this study is devoted to exploring what has changed in the ways to Weibo users’ get information and communicate about films, especially art films from 2014 to 2017 by social media logic. The second part analyzes a successful case and tries to find out how the distributors of the art films could use Weibo as an online marketing tool to conduct online marketing activities by combing the social media logic with the marketing strategy for non-mainstream culture products. This study used a combination of qualitative research and quantitative research. After analyzing the collected data, it is indicated that during the three years, Weibo users have changed a lot in obtaining movie information and communicating art movies which might have an impact on Weibo users discussing art films and purchasing tickets. Weibo can also be utilized by art films distributors using idiosyncratic marketing approach than ordinary method to attract audience's attention.

Abstract:

This research has two areas. First of all, we analyse the link between humans and machines acording to the interaction in the web 2.0 to find out if the use of Internet has enabled new capabilities that create the abstraction of a virtual proximity that generates empathy in crisis or emergencies. Furthermore, determining the role of the communication departments of the non-profit sector, and in this sense, the deeper message that the receiver searchs, finds or receives through the Internet. We do that because it serves in the virtual environment as a trigger to generate a change in the way of processing the information and it shows how the transmission channel of the information is important for the reaction of being different.

Abstract:
Social media effects may affect self-perception and the way media users live their offline lives. The purpose of this essay was to examine the phenomenon of social media saturation in order to understand the possible risks to the development of human identity during the adolescent period. Hence, these risks may be generated by being exposed to social comparison, cyberbullying, self-validation, and self-perception in a sensitive age when self-image is still fragile and being formed. The purpose of this essay is to examine the psychological tendencies of human beings while interacting with their peers on social media platforms. Hence, this will give us a clearer view of what would be achieved by conducting interviews. Moreover, a selection of theories will be applied to those interviews in order to associate those theories with what has been said by respondents. Hence, Meyrowitz’s theory will be used in relation to  understanding the identity adaptation to online connection and linked to Goffman’s discussions of “onstage” and “backstage” (Meyrowitz, 1985: 5). After this, the essay will investigate how users’ self-perception and social comparison are enacted while socializing on social media platforms. Furthermore, this essay sheds the light on how identity is constructed online in the sense of belonging to a community on a social media platform as well as of gratification coming from peer validation in a virtual community. To be able to explain this, the “Social Identity Theory” will, therefore, be discussed (Teo, Matti, et al, 2017: 23). This will be discussed by mentioning theories like “Mediatization” (Couldry & Hepp, 2013). And lastly, the sociological concept of Habitus, minted by Pierre Bourdieu will demonstrate the process of adaptation towards unspoken social codes existing in virtual communities (Markham, 2017: 55).  As found in the four qualitative semi-structured interviews with social media users, respondents are surrounding themselves with like-minded social groups which provide them with confidence about their own system of beliefs. Nevertheless, their perspectives are often marked by notable social pessimism and a lack of incentive to engage in conflictual interactions with others on social media. The results pointed out the perception among the interviewees that the impact of social media on identity formation is largely confined to adolescent users. Many users self-report significant daily screen time and are aware of the risks of social bubbles. Most of the respondents denied being subjected to cyberbullying, while they were surfing on social media, so the respondents’ physical lives were not affected by cyberbullying even for those who mentioned their exposure to cyberbullying. All the respondents expressed a sense of jealousy to some extent, even though some of them showed awareness of the thought that people post their lives from a perfect angle while hiding the flaws and not showing the imperfections of their lives on social media. Lastly, social comparison was an incentive feeling affected most of the respondents, and in their own experience, social media affected their character development and self-perception since they were exposed to social media at an adolescent age.

Usher Syndrome is an inherited disease that leads to the progressive loss of hearing and vision (retinitis pigmentosa). Increasingly, genetic testing, either through panels or whole exome sequencing, lets people know which of the twelve genes identified to date is responsible for the loss of their senses. Researchers are using these genetic ascertainment data to identify patients for clinical trials: There is no approved treatment for retinitis pigmentosa. A philanthropically-funded translational research program led by Dr. Edwin Stone at the University of Iowa seeks to provide an at-cost personalized gene therapy for everybody with Ushers, regardless how rare. His efforts focus transfecting patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells with a viral gene vector to replace the broken Ushers gene. Meanwhile, a phase 1/11 clinical trial led by Dr. Eric Pierce and ReNeuron takes a different approach-injecting participants' subretinal space with healthy donor stem cells. Critically, both of these methods risk remaining vision. This is the story of two people with Ushers -- an infant with MYO7A -- associated Ushers who was genetically diagnosed in her first year of life, and a retired man who likely suffers from USH2A-associated Ushers, whose life experience exemplifies the condition, but whose specific genetic mutation has never been identified. Both have opted for cochlear implants to improve their hearing, and both work to adapt each day to their changing senses.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Clothing can be consumed for its function but also for it’s symbolism, identity and status where the social aspect is an underlying factor. These various aspects, low prices and the frequent launch of new trends are contributing factors to an extensive consumption of low-quality and short-lived clothing. In connection to this, sustainability is an increasingly important aspect in clothing consumption. The large amount of consumption of clothing that digitalization and media also contributes to, affects the environment and the health of individuals. It is therefore of interest to look into this problem and pay further attention to people's consumption of clothes with low-quality and short life. The purpose of this research is to study whether people belonging to generation X buy clothes of low- quality and short life. This study aims to get an understanding of their perception of these clothes and the effects they have on the environment. Furthermore, the purpose is to examine how this generation experiences that media based marketing influences their purchase of clothes with low quality and short life. A qualitative research method was used, where 18 semi-structured interviews took place. The questions asked in the interviews were based on the following three theories; theory of cognitive dissonance, consumer culture theory and media system dependency theory. This study indicates that purchases of low quality and short life clothing occur among the respondents. They have a negative perception about clothes of low quality and short life because they perceive that the purchase of these clothes leads to the constant need to buy new garments due to the short life and the low quality. In addition to this, the respondents have a perception that the purchase of these garments has a negative effect on the environment. This study shows mixed opinions and views regarding the marketing of clothing via the media, however, most respondents were skeptical about it. Despite this, the study shows that the majority of respondents feel that marketing via the media influences them to buy more clothes of low quality and short life than they otherwise would have done. The study also shows that the respondents feel that marketing via the media can change their view and create feelings about clothes with low quality and short life, which they experience can influence their purchase of these clothes.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine what factors contribute to and result from body dissatisfaction using the theoretical framework of the Tripartite Model of Influence, which included family, peer, and media influence. Participants were recruited from SONA and student organizations and participated in an online survey (N =148). A MANCOVA indicated that Asian and White females did not differ in body dissatisfaction and other health outcomes. Thin-ideal internalization mediated the relationships between media influence, peer influence, and body dissatisfaction among Asian American females. Moderation analyses indicated that ethnic identity, Asian American identity, and acculturation did not moderate the relationship between the three tripartite influences and body dissatisfaction. Finally, a series of multiple regressions indicated that body dissatisfaction significantly predicted disordered eating, cosmetic surgery endorsement, and cigarette use among Asian Americans. Findings suggest that Asian American body dissatisfaction may be more related to Western influence than current literature shows.

Abstract:
This work analysis the construction of different forms of framing developed by animal rights activists in interactions with the mass media. Through a frame analysis, this social movement‟s organizations‟ profiles are analyzed, as well as specific cases of this kind of interaction in a comparative perspective. Scholars of the framing perspective identify a central dilemma that social movement‟s activists experience between a “strategic” position and an “ideological” attitude. In a critic of the concept of “strategy”, this work develops a classification of the frames based on the imagined adequacy of these interpretations to the situations to which they refer. Therefore, this dilemma is reinterpreted in terms of a dilemma between the use of categories seen as more or less adequate for the classification of the situations, knowing that there is a possibility that those categories seen as the most appropriate are not appealing or apprehensible to the interlocutor. The answers to this dilemma must vary according to three types of short-term general goals defined by the given “logics of action combinations”: construct social problems, conquer practical results and defend collective identities. In the case of the animal rights, these logics of action combinations are the origins of three types of activism: the constructionist abolitionism, the pragmatic abolitionism and the identity abolitionism. The activist‟s decision must vary, also, according to the peculiar interactive dynamics of each interaction in which they are inserted. Five interactive dynamics that are relevant to this process are identified: the attribution of characteristics to the interlocutor; the anticipation of the framing impact; the intentions of the actors; the adequacy to the speech situation; and the social role‟s performance. Thereby, pre-interactive dynamics and interactive dynamics both lead activists to develop distinct solutions for the framing dilemma in the analyzed cases.

Abstract:
Over time, the state has undertaken various reforms to govern the development of education. The issue of using new media may be seen as such an example. A change in the use of media in education imposes great challenges on both municipalities and teachers. This thesis aims to visualise and discuss governance in the contradictions that arise in practical activities aimed at integrating new media in school teaching, based on three actors’ perspectives, namely the dilemmas of the teacher, the media pedagogue and the media developer. The study is based on systemic thinking about governance and I employ both activity theory and the concept of governmentality to visualise and discuss the governance. The study is conducted in the form of a case study. The case consists of a municipality where, based on the curriculum’s mission, teachers have tried to find ways to integrate new media into their teaching. My own connection to the case consists of having been a driving and governing force in the work as a teacher, media pedagogue and media developer. The case was chosen because the municipality’s work on the national level and via the media has been held up as a good example. The empirical part consists of both my own life narrative and studies of different documents, texts, images, films and sound recordings that show how governmentalities are formed and take shape on the micro, macro and meso levels. I use a methodological prism, a combination of different analytical perspectives, discourse, activity, narratives and governmentality. The results reveal that the driving actors are innovatively handling the systemic contradictions that arise in the work of carrying out the curriculum’s mission. The governance of the activities is based on a trust rationality. The more the use of new media is spread in the municipality’s schools, the more contradictory it becomes for the middle level’s actors. The trust rationality has been superseded by a distrust rationality, creating a growing gap between the administration and the activities.

Abstract:

With the main concern that the media should prompt to cultural citizenship, this research started with a question: what kind of problems does Taiwan’s TV reform confront to? How do we overcome these problems? Through the research of historical process, we found out that Taiwan’s media reform confronts a main problem of ”the lack of participants”. Furthermore, I focused on structural media reform, and analyzed it with social movement theory. Therefore, I found out two points. First, the claims of the campaign for structural media reform are not transformed successfully to the rhetoric of the general public. Second, taking Taiwan’s PTS (Public Television Service) as the criterion of “publicness” for media made the general public hardly accept the value the campaign advocated because PTS is considered as a high-class media and does not prevail among the general public. Media reform aims to pursuit the fundamental cultural citizenship. We should try our best to solve these problems and win for better cultural citizenship in order to establish healthy public sphere and keep deepening Taiwan’s democracy.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the influence of advertisers on the content of printed motoring magazines through the method of quantitative content analysis. The thesis asks whether an increasement of advertising can or can not influence media's reporting on advertisers' products. The thesis examines three Czech printed motoring magazines: Svět motorů, Automobil revue and auto motor a sport. The theoretical part deals with the dual-market topic, in other words the theory of two types of media's customers: paying readers and paying advertisers. They can - and according to the theory they often do - differ in their interests. The advertiser is interested in showing his products in the media in the best possible light, on the contrary, the reader is interested in being informed as objectively as possible. The theoretical part is based mainly on McQuail (2009) and Jirák and Köpplová (2015), who deal, inter alia, with the dilemma of two customers. Part of the theory is devoted to several other research which have examined the same topic; e. g. in the context of Italian fashion magazines. The work itself is based on research questions that ask about a correlation between the amount of advertising and amount (and tonality) of editorial content devoted to the advertisers as well as a possible influence of...
