Schneider, Florian. The User-Generated Nation. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190876791.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 7 turns to user-generated content, social media, and ‘Web 2.0’ technologies in digital China’s message boards and comment sections. The cases of the Nanjing Massacre and the Diaoyu Islands then show that online commentaries often provide a nuanced picture of how to make sense of Sino-Japanese relations, and yet the overarching discursive patterns combine with digital mechanisms such as ‘likes’ and algorithmic popularity rankings to push the discussion into nationalist media scripts. In contrast, China’s microblogging spheres at first sight offer a different story: discussions on Weibo or Weixin are diverse, dynamic, and can have impressive reach. Yet the nature of such social networks ultimately either skews them in favour of a few influential users or moves discussions into the walled gardens of small social groups, making nationalist discourse reverberate through the echo chambers of digital China and contributing to a visceral sense of a shared nationhood.

Wright, Tom F. Lecturing the Atlantic. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190496791.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Lecturing the Atlantic argues for a new interpretation of the public lecture, as one of the nineteenth-century Anglo-American world’s most important cultural forms. It reorients our understanding of lecturing during the “lyceum movement” by seeing it as an international and cross-media phenomenon patterned by cultural investment in an “Anglo-American commons.” series of case studies shows how some of the midcentury North Atlantic world’s most enduring cultural figures, such as Frederick Douglass, William Makepeace Thackeray, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, as well as fascinating marginal voices such as Lola Montez and John B. Gough, used lecture hall discussions of a transatlantic imaginary to offer powerful commentaries on slavery, progress, comedy, order, tradition, and reform. Through a series of readings of Anglo-American relations as understood through performance and print re-mediation, Wright connects the transatlantic turn in cultural studies to important recent debates in media theory and scholarship on the public sphere and nineteenth-century public culture.

Hofer-Robinson, Joanna. Dickens and Demolition. Edinburgh University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474420983.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Dickens and Demolition is the first study to trace and measure the material impact of Charles Dickens’s fiction in London’s built environment. The book analyses debates surrounding large-scale metropolitan demolitions, modernisation or reform projects in the mid-nineteenth century and tracks a Dickensian vocabulary in these discussions across multiple media and fora, including written commentaries, parliamentary debates, theatre and the visual arts. It argues that tropes, characters and extracts from his fiction were repeatedly remediated to articulate and negotiate contemporary anxieties about the urban environment and linked social problems. In so doing, it poses the questions: what cultural work is performed by literary afterlives? And can we trace their material effects in the spaces we inhabit?

Tutino, Stefania. The Genesis of Probabilism. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190694098.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores the genesis of probabilism, and it sets the historical and theoretical tone for the development of this doctrine. It examines two theologians in particular: the theologian and canon law scholar Martín de Azpilcueta (better known as Doctor Navarrus) and the Dominican theologian Bartolomé de Medina. Both of them engaged profoundly with uncertainty in their commentaries on moral theology and law, as well as in their hugely influential manuals for confessors. Whereas the former provided a crucial elaboration on the nature and significance of moral uncertainty, the latter identified and articulated uncertainty as an epistemological, not simply moral, category.

Full text
Abstract:
In the wake of its "Caliphate" declaration in 2014, the self-described Islamic State has been the focus of countless academic papers, government studies, media commentaries and documentaries. Despite all this attention, persistent myths continue to shape--and misdirect--public understanding and strategic policy decisions. A significant factor in this trend has been a strong disinclination to engage critically with Islamic State's speeches and writings--as if doing so reflects empathy with the movement's goals or, even more absurdly, may itself lead to radicalization. Going beyond the descriptive and the sensationalist, this volume presents and analyses a series of milestone Islamic State primary source materials. Scholar-practitioners with field experience in confronting the movement explore and contextualize its approach to warfare, propaganda and governance, examining the factors behind its dramatic evolution from failed proto-state in 2010 to standard-bearer of global jihadism in 2014, to besieged insurgency in 2018. The ISIS Reader will help anyone--students and journalists, military personnel, civil servants and inquisitive observers--to better understand not only the evolution of Islamic State and the dynamics of asymmetric warfare, but the importance of primary sources in doing so.

Deaville, James, Siu-Lan Tan, and Ron Rodman, eds. The Oxford Handbook of Music and Advertising. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190691240.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Music and Advertising assembles an array of forty-two pathbreaking chapters on the production, texts, and reception of advertising through music. Uniquely interdisciplinary, the collection’s tripartite structure leads the reader through these stages in the communication of the advertising message as presented by Chris Wharton (2015). The chapters on production study the factors, activities, and people behind the music for the marketing pitch, both past and present. Prominent throughlines in the section include factors influencing the selection of music (and musicians) for advertising, the role of music in corporate branding strategies, the creative forces behind the soundscape of advertising, and industry practices that undergird all aspects of music in commercial contexts. The section on Text focuses on analytic and historical approaches to ads in various media, and includes commentaries on musical genres in ads ranging from Western European art music to American popular genre. Also covered in this section is ad music as used in different ad genres, such as political ads, public service announcements, and television commercials. The analyses used in this section draws from traditional music theory, semiotics, and hermeneutic analysis. Finally, the last section addressing “Reception”—with contributions by researchers in psychology, marketing, and other fields—involves the formulation of models and theories, and implementation of research methods to examine how the presence of music may influence peoples’ attitudes, emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in the context of advertisements and within service environments such as stores, restaurants, and banks. The editors and chapter contributors of this book bring a diversity of perspectives to the topic but share a united aim: to illuminate music’s vital contribution to the advertising message.
