Abstract:
To improve the recovery of waste heat and avoid the problem of abandoning wind and solar energy, a multi-energy complementary distributed energy system (MECDES) is proposed, integrating waste heat and surplus electricity for hydrogen storage. The system comprises a combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) system with a gas engine (GE), solar and wind power generation, and miniaturized natural gas hydrogen production equipment (MNGHPE). In this novel system, the GE’s waste heat is recycled as water vapor for hydrogen production in the waste heat boiler, while surplus electricity from renewable sources powers the MNGHPE. A mathematical model was developed to simulate hydrogen production in three building types: offices, hotels, and hospitals. Simulation results demonstrate the system’s ability to store waste heat and surplus electricity as hydrogen, thereby providing economic benefit, energy savings, and carbon reduction. Compared with traditional energy supply methods, the integrated system achieves maximum energy savings and carbon emission reduction in office buildings, with an annual primary energy reduction rate of 49.42–85.10% and an annual carbon emission reduction rate of 34.88–47.00%. The hydrogen production’s profit rate is approximately 70%. If the produced hydrogen is supplied to building through a hydrogen fuel cell, the primary energy reduction rate is further decreased by 2.86–3.04%, and the carbon emission reduction rate is further decreased by 12.67–14.26%. This research solves the problem of waste heat and surplus energy in MECDESs by the method of hydrogen storage and system integration. The economic benefits, energy savings, and carbon reduction effects of different building types and different energy allocation scenarios were compared, as well as the profitability of hydrogen production and the factors affecting it. This has a positive technical guidance role for the practical application of MECDESs.

Abstract:
Objectives. The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate myoelectrically controlled functional electrical stimulation (MeCFES) for enhancing the tenodesis grip in people with tetraplegia. The second aim was to estimate the potential number of candidates for the MeCFES device. The application of MeCFES provides the user with direct control of the grasp force as opposed to triggered FES systems.Methods. Screening 253 medical records of C5 to C7 spinal cord injury resulted in 27 participants who trained activities of daily living for 12 × 2 hours, using the MeCFES. Hand function was evaluated by the Action Research Arm Test (ARAT). Primary outcome was the ARAT change score with/without the device, before/after the intervention period. Secondary outcome was the number of positive or clinically relevant change scores with respect to the cohort.Results. The MeCFES improved hand test score in 63% of the subjects at first application. Training resulted in a significant therapeutic effect, which resulted in an overall increase of hand function in 89% of the participants and 30% experienced a clinically relevant change (6 points or more).Conclusions. Clinical relevance was found both as an assistive aid and as a therapeutic tool in rehabilitation. The therapeutic effect deserves further investigation in clinical studies.

Abstract:
We respond to Mech (2019) “Do Indigenous American Peoples’ Stories Inform the Study of Dog Domestication” and point out a number of errors and omissions in Mech’s essay. These include: 1) assuming that the behavior of all wild wolves is the same, and can be characterized according only to Mech’s personal experience; 2) assuming that the domestication of wolves took place in only a single location at one time (14,000 yrs BP); 3) misrepresenting the statements and findings of other scholars; 4) assuming that all wolves that have ever encountered humans have experienced persecution; and 5) dismissing all accounts of interactions with wolves by Indigenous Americans. The last of these is particularly egregious and seems to represent a form of neocolonial thinking, in which only accounts and findings by Europeans are considered to be acceptable evidence. Mech’s own work on Ellesmere Island seems to support the idea that wolves can be curious and unthreatening to humans. We suggest that this might be the only actual time Mech interacted with true Canis lupus. In addition, Mech’s statements on wolf attacks and the significance of rabies are shown to be misleading. As a result, Mech’s work, especially his questioning of the validity of Indigenous knowledge, which often provides crucial insights into some aspects of ethnobiological research, represents a critique of methods employed by scholars within the discipline of ethnobiology, whereas, as a wildlife biologist, Mech seems to lack knowledge of the principles of ethnobiology.

Full text
Abstract:
Cassava is susceptible to mites, especially Tetranychus cinnabarinus. Secondary metabolism products such as flavonoids play an important role as antimicrobial metabolites protecting plants against biotic stressors including fungal, pathogen, bacterial, and pest defense. The chalcone synthase (CHS) is the initial step of the phenylpropanoid pathway for producing flavonoids and is the gatekeeper of the pathway. Until recently, the CHS genes family has not been systematically studied in cassava. Thirty-nine CHS genes were identified from the cassava genome database. Based on phylogenetic and sequence composition analysis, these CHSs were divided into 3 subfamilies. Within the same subfamily, the gene structure and motif compositions of these CHS genes were found to be quite conserved. Duplication events, particularly segmental duplication of the cassava CHS genes, were identified as one of the main driving force of its expansion. Various cis-elements contained in the promoter might regulate the gene expression patterns of MeCHS. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis showed that MeCHS1 and MeCHS10 protein are more closely related to other family members. The expression of MeCHS genes in young leaves was higher than that in other tissues, and their expression varies even within the same tissue. Coincidentally, these CHS genes of most LAP subclasses were highly expressed in young leaves. The verified MeCHS genes showed consistent with the real-time reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) and proteomic expression in protected and affected leaves respectively, indicating that these MeCHS genes play crucial roles in the response to T. cinnabarinus. This study is the first to comprehensively expatiate the information on MeCHS family members. These data will further enhance our understanding both the molecular mechanisms and the effects of CHS genes. In addition, the results will help to further clarify the effects on T. cinnabarinus and provide a theoretical basis for the potential functions of the specific CHS gene in resistance to mites and other biotic stress.

Abstract:
Abstract Calculating unbiased microphysical process rates over mesoscale model grid volumes necessitates knowledge of the subgrid-scale (SGS) distribution of variables, typically represented as probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the prognostic variables. In the 2014 Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences paper by Kogan and Mechem, they employed large-eddy simulation of Rain in Cumulus over the Ocean (RICO) trade cumulus to develop PDFs and joint PDFs of cloud water, rainwater, and droplet concentration. In this paper, the approach of Kogan and Mechem is extended to deeper, precipitating cumulus congestus clouds as represented by a simulation based on conditions from the TOGA COARE field campaign. The fidelity of various PDF approximations was assessed by evaluating errors in estimating autoconversion and accretion rates. The dependence of the PDF shape on grid-mean variables is much stronger in congestus clouds than in shallow cumulus. The PDFs obtained from the TOGA COARE simulations for the calculation of accretion rates may be applied to both shallow and congestus cumulus clouds. However, applying the TOGA COARE PDFs to calculate autoconversion rates introduces unacceptably large errors in shallow cumulus clouds, thus precluding the use of a “universal” PDF formulation for both cloud types.

In this study a structural and quantitative analysis of the exochorial polygonal cells of hatched eggs of Triatoma infestans (Klug), Triatoma lenti Sherlock & Serafim, Triatoma maculata (Erichson), Triatoma sordida (Stal), Meccus picturatus (Usinger), Meccus longipennis (Usinger), Meccus pallidipennis (Stal) and Nesotriatoma flavida (Neiva) was performed; cephalic, median and caudal egg regions were compared. It was found that cells with hexagonal shape were more abundant among all egg regions and studied species, followed by pentagonal and heptagonal polygons respectively. The average number of hexagonal and pentagonal polygons was significantly different among the three egg regions for each species, and when comparing the median, cephalic and caudal egg regions among different species. However, the average number of heptagons did not differ among the three egg regions for each species. The average number of heptagons did not differ when comparing the median egg region, but differed when comparing the cephalic and caudal egg regions, among different species. The average number of hexagons, pentagons, heptagons, total polygons, and total segments did not differ among the different species eggs of Meccus genus. A group of 108 micrographies (380,000 μm2 each one) were studied using tessellation methods. Shared tilings and unshared tilings were found in all the micrographies observed. Shared tilings were conformed by combinations of heptagons, hexagons and pentagons, and unshared tilings by combinations of polygons from four to nine sides. Finally, each tiling arrangement was represented as a graph. Taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic implications of the polygonal cell arrangement described here are discussed.

Abstract:
Background: bZIP proteins participate in the regulation of gene expression, playing crucial roles in various biological processes in plants, including response to environmental changes. Luminosity is an environmental factor of extreme importance for plant metabolism, acting as a regulator of its growth and development. Despite advances in the identification of bZIP proteins in several plant species, studies on these transcription factors in cassava are lacking. Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is one of the most important food crops in tropical and subtropical regions, mainly in developing countries, where its storage root is a major source of calories for low-income people. Objectives: Our main aim was the isolation of a cDNA sequence encoding a bZIP protein from cassava (MebZIP) as well as the in silico characterization of its nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences. In addition, we evaluated the expression pattern of the MebZIP gene in response to light, and its possible relationship with regulation of the chalcone synthase (MeCHS) gene. Method: RT-PCR and 3’ and 5’ RACE assays were used to isolate the full-length cDNA sequence of MebZIP. Bioinformatics tools were used to characterize the nucleotide and amino acid sequences of MebZIP. Semiquantitative RT-PCR assays were used to evaluate the expression levels of MebZIP and MeCHS genes. Results: We isolated the full-length cDNA sequence of MebZIP with a 1320-bp ORF encoding a deduced protein with a predicted molecular weight and isoelectric point of 47 kDa and 5.85, respectively. Comparative analyses with GenBank sequences showed high identity of MebZIP with bZIP CPRF-2 of Hevea brasiliensis (XP_021650934) and Petroselinum crispum (Q99090.2). Besides the basic region and leucine zipper domains, MebZIP contains putative conserved domains (D1- D4), found in parsley CPRF-2 and bZIP proteins closely related to this protein. Since CPRF proteins are known for their function in regulation of the CHS gene by light, we evaluated the expression levels of the MebZIP gene and the possible target gene to be regulated by MebZIP (the MeCHS gene) in cassava under light conditions. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR assays revealed that MebZIP transcription increased in response to white light, with maximum expression levels at 6 h of light exposure. On the other hand, the expression levels of the MeCHS gene were statistically constant in all samples, indicating that they were not influenced by the experimental conditions used here. Conclusion: The putative MebZIP protein identified in this work contains the conserved domains (bZIP, D1-D4) that indicate its functionality, thus allowing it to be considered a new member of the bZIP transcription factor CPRF-2 family. The expression levels of the MebZIP gene increased during white light exposure, indicating a potential function in light-response in cassava.

Abstract:
AbstractUnderstanding the biological parameters of some triatomine subspecies of Meccus phyllosomus (Burmeister) is a crucial first step in estimating the epidemiological importance of this group. Biological parameters related to egg eclosion, egg-to-adult development time, number of blood meals to moult, percentage of females at the end of the cycle, number of laid eggs, and the accumulative mortality for each instar of three M. phyllosomus subspecies [Meccus phyllosomus pallidipennis (Stål), Meccus phyllosomus longipennis (Usinger), and Meccus phyllosomus picturatus (Usinger)] as well as their laboratory hybrids were evaluated and compared. No significant differences (P > 0.05) were recorded among the experimental hybrids (M. p. longipennis × M. p. pallidipennis, M. p. longipennis × M. p. picturatus, M. p. pallidipennis × M. p. picturatus) and reciprocal cohorts. In five of the six studied parameters (egg eclosion, egg-to-adult development time, number of blood meals to moult, number of laid eggs and accumulative mortality), with the exception of the non-significant percentage of females obtained among all the studied cohorts, at least one of the parental cohorts in each set of crosses exhibited better fitness results than by those of their hybrid descendants. The lack of hybrid fitness in our study indicates the maintenance of reproductive isolation of parental genotypes. Moreover, the results lead us to propose that an incipient speciation process by distance is currently developing among the three studied subspecies, increasing the differences between them that modify the transmission efficiency of Trypanosoma cruzi to human beings in Mexico.

Abstract:
AbstractThe competences acquired in the Spanish degrees for Master and Bachelor levels are classified into four types: basic, specific, general and transverse [1]. The basic competences are described in the royal decree RD 861/2010 [2]. These are the same for all the Spanish degrees of the same level. The specific and general competences are defined in the corresponding ministerial orders, to be acquired in degrees that qualify for the practice of regulated professions, as it is the case for most building and engineering degrees. In addition, the competences described in RD 1027/2011 of the MECES [3] are mandatory, although they are not included in the verification reports of the studies; these competences are similar to the basic ones and are also common for all degrees of the same level. Finally, the studies that are evaluated according to the program of International Quality Seals of ANECA, for obtaining the quality signature EUR-ACE®, must prove they also integrate the competences of the requested sealThe transverse competences are not defined in the legislation and, in fact, it is possible to verify a degree without including competences of this type. However, the basic and MECES competences are mandatory and, as the transverse skills, are generic. To facilitate the distribution of basic, MECES and transverse competences among the syllabus of their different degrees, the Technical University of Cartagena (UPCT) designed a set of seven transverse competences, each with three successive levels for Bachelor degrees, and an additional level for Master studies. These competences are directly related to the basic ones and those of the MECES. They also integrate the learning outcomes of the generic type of the EUR-ACE® seal. In order to define these competences, documents from different institutions [5] and the rankings of most demanded competences by companies were analyzed. The seven transverse competences are distributed among each syllabus in a centralized manner, so that all of them are sufficiently represented and evenly distributed. Every course in a syllabus develops a single transverse competence at a given level, in accordance with its best adequacy [6]. UPCT has developed educational materials to facilitate the integration of competences to teachers [7]. The competences and levels are defined in the form of learning outcomes, following recommendations from ANECA [8].This paper presents the model of seven UPCT transverse competences, with their definitions and levels, and shows examples of distribution in different degrees. It also explains the relationships between transverse and basic competences, and how both types of competences are time-wise linked along a syllabus, so that their integration is coherent and feasible.

Abstract:
Two-dimensional (2D) materials have been a research hot topic in the passed decades due to their unique and fascinating properties. Among them, mechanical properties play an important role in their application. However, there lacks an effective tool for high-throughput calculating, analyzing and visualizing the mechanical properties of 2D materials. In this work, we present the mech2d package, a highly automated toolkit for calculating and analyzing the second-order elastic constants (SOECs) tensor and relevant properties of 2D materials by considering their symmetry. In the mech2d, the SOECs can be fitted by both the strain–energy and stress–strain approaches, where the energy or strain can be calculated by a first-principles engine, such as VASP. As a key feature, the mech2d package can automatically submit and collect the tasks from a local or remote machine with robust fault-tolerant ability, making it suitable for high-throughput calculation. The present code has been validated by several common 2D materials, including graphene, black phosphorene, GeSe2 and so on.

Treatment of (butadiene)zirconocene with two molar equivalents of benzylmercaptane results in the formation of Cp2Zr(SCH2Ph)2 (11). Subsequent reaction of 11 with [Cp2ZrCH3+][CH3B(C6F5)3-](12) leads to rapid elimination of methane to yield the dinuclear [μ-(η2-thiobenzaldehyde)(μ-SCH2Ph)(ZrCp2)2+] cation complex 14. A similar reaction is observed upon treatment of Cp2Zr(SC2H5)2 (15) with 12 to yield the thioacetaldehydebridged dinuclear metallocene cation complex Cp2Zr-μ-(η2-MeCHS)-μ-(SEt)ZrCp2 (16).

Abstract:
Golden Horde State during its existence on the Crimean Peninsula origin two towns Solkhat – Krym (modern Stariy Krym) and Kirk-Yer (modern Chufut-Kale). At the time of its emergence in the mid-15th century, the Crimean Khanate "inherited" only these two towns on the peninsula. Coastal Genoese towns - Caffa (modern Feodosia), Soldaia (modern Sudak), Cembalo (modern Balaklava) and Vosporo (modern Kerch) were situated near as well as two towns of the Late Byzantine principality Theodoro: the capital of the principality – Theodoro (now Mangup) and the town Calamita (now Inkerman). As a result of the Ottoman conquest of 1475 the number of Ottoman Crimean towns remained the same, only their names were changed: Caffa became Kefe, Soldaia – Sudak, Cembalo – Balaklava, Vosporo – Kerch, Theodoro – Mangup, Calamita – Inkerman. The total number of the Ottoman Crimean towns remained virtually unchanged for three centuries. In contrast, in the territory of the Crimean Khanate in the last quarter of the 15th and early 16th centuries five new towns were founded. Bahchisaray, Karasubazar, Ak-Mechet, Gezlev and Or Kapu were added to two old Golden Horde cities – Solkhat and Kirk-Yer. It were new towns that got priority in development. The political and economic center of Golden Horde Solkhat in the second half of the 15th century would lose its administrative importance and economic influence. During the khan's period it would be called Eski Krym. The main conclusion of the study is that all new towns of the Crimean Khanate (Bahchisaray, Karasubazar, Ak-Mechet, Gezlew, Or Kapu) were not connected with the previous centuries-old urbanistic tradition of local Byzantine or Genoese cities, they appeared in previously unoccupied places, where at best there were Golden Horde settlements. The original urban planning foundations of these cities come from the Golden Horde (in the broad sense – the Eastern) urban planning tradition.
