Abstract:
Tunneling in urban conditions requires costly measures, in order to ensure the safety of existing buildings. On average, there are up to 17–20 buildings per 1 km of Moscow Subway Lines under construction. Analysis and comparison of geotechnical monitoring data and results of geotechnical estimations for underground construction using cut-and-cover and tunneling methods in conditions of high-density urban area shows an unsatisfactory correlation between estimated and actual data. This can be described in the following way: insufficient geotechnical survey data; discrepancy between the accepted estimation model and the actual behavior of soil under load; insufficient qualification of the construction workers; and overcutting. The study was aimed at solving the urgent scientific and engineering problem of determining the characteristics of overcutting during mechanized tunnel boring. At the first stage, the investigations were aimed at identifying the key reasons and factors which determine the quantitative parameters of overcutting in urban underground construction by tunneling. These factors include the following: mismatch between the cutting diameter and the outer lining diameter; displacement of the soil mass in front of the face; incomplete grouting of voids beyond the lining; incomplete filling of beyond-shield voids with clay mortar or slow-curing grouting mortar or no filling at all; and human factor (low qualifications of personnel). The overcutting coefficient was determined on the basis of the proposed empirical dependence of its values with regard to the depth of tunneling. The experimental data allowed the depth dependence of the overcutting coefficient for different tunneling depths to be defined, as well as for tunnel diameters from 4 to 10 meters in the case of mechanized tunnel boring machine (TBM) using the earth pressure balanced tunneling method. The practical importance of the studies consists in determining the range of the empirical overcutting coefficient variation from 0.5 % (for TBMs with nominal diameter of 10 m) up to 5 % (for TBMs with nominal diameter of 4 m). The development of organizational measures and justification of process solutions, aimed at ensuring the safety of the existing buildings in conjunction with the scientific and technical support of underground construction has led to a shortening of tunneling time between the Okskaya and Nizhegorodskaya stations of Nekrasovskaya Line of Moscow Subway by about six months. It has also provided savings of about 2.5 billion rubles.

Abstract:
Introduction: The increase in population and traffic in metropolitan areas has led to the development of underground transportation spaces. Therefore, the estimation of the surface settlement caused by the construction of underground structures should be accurately considered. Several methods have been developed to predict tunneling-induced surface settlement. Among these methods, artificial intelligence-based methods have received much attention in recent years. This paper is aimed to develop a model based on Gene Expression Programming (GEP) algorithm to predict surface settlement induced by mechanized tunneling. Methods: For this purpose, Tehran Metro Line 6 was simulated numerically to investigate the effects of different parameters on the surface settlement, and 85 datasets were prepared from numerical simulations. Subsequently, several GEP models were implemented using the obtained datasets from numerical simulations and finally, a model with 30 chromosomes and 3 genes was selected as the optimum model. Results: A comparison was made between obtained maximum surface settlements by the proposed GEP model and numerical simulation. The results demonstrated that the proposed model could predict surface settlement induced by mechanized tunneling with a high degree of accuracy. Conclusion: Finally, a mathematical equation was derived from the proposed GEP model, which can be easily used for surface settlement prediction.

Abstract:
Purpose. Disc cutters are the main cutting tools for the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). Prediction of the number of consumed disc cutters of TBMs is one of the most significant factors in the tunneling projects. Choosing the right model for predicting the number of consumed disc cutters in mechanized tunneling projects has been the most important mechanized tunneling topics in recent years. Methods. In this research, the prediction of the number of consumed disc cutters considering machine and ground conditions such as Power (KW), Revolutions per minute (RPM) (Cycle/Min), Thrust per Cutter (KN), Geological Strength Index (GSI) in the Sabzkooh water conveyance tunnel has been conducted by multiple linear regression analysis and multiple nonlinear regression, Gene Expression Programming (GEP) method and Support Vector Machine (SVM) approaches. Findings. Results showed that the number of consumed disc cutters for linear regression method is R2 = 0.95 and RMSE = 0.83, nonlinear regression method is – R2 = 0.95 and RMSE = 0.84, Gene Expression Programming (GEP) method is – R2 = 0.94 and RMSE = 0.95, Support Vector Machine (SVM) method is – R2 = 0.98 and RMSE = 0.45. Originality. During the analyses, in order to evaluate the accuracy and efficiency of predictive models, the coefficient of determination (R2) and root mean square error (RMSE) have been used. Practical implications. Results demonstrated that all four methods are effective and have high accuracy but the method of support vector machine has a special superiority over other methods.

Abstract:
As one of the main hazard in the downhole operation, the coal dust not only threats the safety of underground workplaces, but also affects the health of workers. In this paper, we elaborate the current situation of dust in the full-mechanized work face and corresponding preventive measures, design an air curtain dust-collecting device and analyzes its working principle. In order to study the effect of dust prevention of the proposed air curtain dust-collecting device, we studied the movement rule of wind and dust by software of FLUENT. The simulation result shows that the air curtain can control the dust concentration well in the full-mechanized work face. Most of the dust generated during tunneling operations have been cut off in the driver’s front air curtain, and this helps us to effectively avoid the dust spreading to the side of the operating driver.

Abstract:
Current advances in science, followed by development of excavation equipments technology resulted in growth of tunnelling projects for different purposes. In spite of conducting exploratory studies prior to these projects, in some cases due to of impassable paths, the studies are limited to certain areas. Hence, during geotechnical studies, it is possible that all problems facing tunnelling not be detected. Therefore, lack of awareness of these conditions can result in a lack of proper planning and consequently lead to problems during the projects. Due to the lack of knowledge and consequently not predicting and planning the projects, drilling of the second sector of Nousoud water transmission tunnel, -26 km long- has been faced with many problems including emission of hydrogen sulfide and methane gas and drainage of high volumes of water containing dissolved gas into the tunnel, which has led to the loss of life, loss of working efficiency, as well as increased project costs. In this study, problems occurred in this project, reasons behind them will be addressed; and the solutions to these problems will be mentioned. The results of the study have shown that oil-bearing formations of the region and the immigration of gases coming from these formations have let the gas entered into the tunnel. In addition, due to the high solubility of hydrogen sulfide and methane gas in water on one hand, and hydrated formations with high permeability on the other hand, caused the influx of large quantities of water and therefore the concentration of these gases in the tunnel.

Abstract:
Precast concrete segments used in shield tunnel linings are prone to damage in many situations. These damages can occur at different stages such as fabrication in segment factory, transportation to tunneling site, during tunneling process, and at serviceability stage. The aim of the present article is to study the damages inflicted on concrete segments during production and transportation, and to present a new classification of these damages throughout the two stages. The developed classification is based on field observations and examinations of major subway and water conveyance mechanized shield tunnels of Iran, located in Tehran, Tabriz, Mashhad, Kermanshah (Nosood) and Isfahan (Golab). The quality of tunnel lining suffers from what, as a direct consequence of any damage to concrete segments, during production and transportation, which will be also discussed in this article. For further investigation, more than 250 concrete segments from Tehran subway line 3 and 350 segments of concrete segments from Tehran subway line 7 were selected and studied for a statistical analysis of chipping and crack, consecutively. Absence of preventive measures to limit segment damages in precast segment factories is one of the main reasons for increased number of damaged concrete segments, and as a result, increased costs of tunnel construction at later stages. In this paper, production phase damages and factors contributing to these damages are studied. According to the findings of the study, the human (operator) error was the most important cause for chipping, and, time-dependent behavior of concrete was the essential reason in crack of precast segments. Eventually, final section of the article presents practical solutions for reduction of damages during fabrication and transportation of concrete segments.

Abstract:
Due to the complex geological conditions, the construction of underground tunnels in the rocks exhibiting creep behaviors is a great challenge and the structures’ long-term stability is of main importance. The excavation by tunnel boring machines (TBM) of a tunnel that is supported by a double flexible/concrete liner is considered a potential technical solution. However, the efficiency of such a support system on the stability at long-term of a tunnel must be verified in the real condition by considering both the effects of uncertainties of the time-dependent rock behavior and anisotropy of initial stress state. In this paper, the subset simulation and the Sobol global sensitivity analysis are chosen to estimate the failure probability of the tunnel supports and quantify the importance of different random parameters, respectively. The results reveal that considering the anisotropy of initial stresses increases the failure probability, especially in the concrete support elements. In addition, the parameters of initial stresses are the ones of main importance for both liners according to the Sobol indices. Therefore, the anisotropy of initial stresses and the related uncertainties should be considered for reliable tunnel designs.

Abstract:
This paper presents an assessment of the impact of tunnelling of the M5 Metro line in Bucharest, and its associated risks on Dambovita river development located in the influence zone of tunnelling operation. During the metro performance the undercrossing of the hydraulic works related to the Dambovita River was required. The Dambovita River hydraulic development is made of 2 main components – the upper clean water channel and the sewage/drainage system cassette, placed below (the base slab of the channel representing the roof of the cassette). On the left river bank, the B0 collector is an old structure with uncertain technical condition Tunnelling in proximity of existing development introduces deformations in both structures and in turn induces additional axial and bending forces. In modern mechanized tunnelling, ground convergence is controlled through balancing the earth pressure at the tunnel face. Reducing ground deformation can consequently lower the additional deformations and forces and lessen the associated construction risk. In this paper, a detailed finite element modelling was performed to simulate the sequence of construction works. The model was calibrated based on the measured settlements behind the face. Based on model results the undercrossing area of influence is revealed. Recommendations regarding the tunnelling works are made in order to avoid any damages to the existing facilities.

Abstract:
Circular tunnels are the most popular shapes used in urban underground transportation systems when mechanized tunneling is used for tunnel excavation. However, circular tunnels have a small space utilization ratio. With the material development, non - circular tunnels such as sub - rectangular, U - shaped lining, etc. are now common, and their cross - section helps to improve the underground space utilization. However, there have been not many studies on the structure and the calculation method of the metro tunnels with the above cross - sections. The paper uses the analytical synthesis method to find out the advantages and disadvantages, the application conditions of the sub - rectangular shape, as well as the development direction for the complete calculation methods for this cross - section in Vietnamese conditions.

Abstract:
During underground construction, the behavior of the ground is influenced by characteristics of the rock mass with situ stresses and ground water, cross section of the excavation area, excavation method, and the rate of excavation. These fundamental features are considered to ensure the support and stability of underground excavations and achieve long-term successful operation. However, the ground composition of the Himalayas hinders tunnel excavation, especially in case of mechanized tunneling; this causes time and cost overruns. This study has reviewed the recently completed Neelum–Jhelum Hydroelectric Project; the project complexities, geological environments involving significant overburden and tectonic stresses, and effects of the excavation method on tunnel stability were analyzed. The major challenges that were encountered during construction are discussed herein along with their countermeasures. An analysis of project-related data reveals that latest techniques and approaches considering rock mechanics were used to complete the project; the existing approaches and methods were accordingly verified and extended. Apart from ground composition, the excavation methods used play an important role in the occurrence of severe rock bursts. Thus, the findings of this study are expected to be helpful for future tunneling projects in the Himalayas.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The 5204 transport roadway roof displacement encountered during the tunneling and mining is more than 240mm, which severely damaged the shape of the roadway. The anchor cable of the top is pulled off and supporting failure takes place. According to the analysis of the surrounding rock pressure behavior law, the concept of supporting new technology based on the concept of "coordinating role of long bolt - surrounding rock" is brought up. This technology can achieve a reasonable match of the supporting object with the displacement and support strength of the surrounding rock. Based on this concept, FLAC3D numerical simulation analysis, combined with the engineering analogy method, produces the long bolting parameters on the 5402 transport roadway. The industrial test results show that in the mining face, the force state of the long bolt is good. When larger displacement in the roof appears, the long bolt is not pulled off and the support failure does not occurs .It means the long bolt has adapted the large deformation of the roadway roof. The research results can provide a reference for similar mechanized caving roadway supporting.

Abstract:
The system which could be described as "trinity, seven subsystems" has realized automatic remote control of the machine working process with orientation, localization and formalization. At local place, it realized automatic position and pose online detection, automatic orientation tunneling, automatic section cutting and forming and adaptive control of cutting arm swaying speed. It was the first time that realized absolute measuring of roadheader frame position and pose error under coal mine working condition in our country which could avoid error accumulation in relative measuring and guarantee the high precision of orientation tunneling. In underground remote, it realized remote monitoring, wireless remote control and video surveillance, thus realized remote control with multiple angles, visualization and one-button control under the condition of dustiness and vibration. At any network access point on ground using mining ring network, it realized real-time monitoring and displaying of roadheader running state parameters, and realized the functions of remote fault diagnosis and alarming. The whole system has been tested many times underground. The application results show that it is stable and reliable. With the development of automation, intellectualization, and informatization and other high technology, this system will be more and more suitable for fully mechanized excavation face.

Abstract:
In the mechanized excavation of subway tunnels, the shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) has been developed in recent decades for managing the instability of the excavation profile in complicated geotechnical conditions in urban areas. The paper presents a 3D simulation procedure for the detailed description of TBM (via the finite element code Abaqus) and quantifies the influence of TBM face pressure on ground surface settlements. The model is used to calculate ground surface settlements for different values of TBM face pressure. An additional aspect of the investigation is the determination of the critical value of TBM face pressure, which controls face instability in very weak ground. During the advancement of shield tunnel boring machines, the face-stabilizing pressure is one of the most important factors of critical. In tunneling by shield tunnel boring machines, high face pressure often leads to surface upheaval, whereas low face pressure leads to sudden collapse of the face and ultimately settlement of the surface. For the model condition, the maximum value was quantity 250 kPa and the minimum value obtained quantity 150 KPa.
