Abstract:
This chapter reviews selected aspects of the terrain of discussion of the role of probabilities in statistical mechanics. Among the topics addressed are the reasons for introduction of probabilities into statistical mechanics, the status of the standard equilibrium distribution, and the question of interpretation of statistical mechanical probabilities. The chapter starts with a brief history of probabilities in physics and the evolution of statistical mechanics therefrom. The approaches of Boltzmann and Gibbs are presented, and then some approaches to justifying choice of probability measures. The chapter closes with a presentation of possible resolutions to some puzzling aspects of the use of standard probability measures.

Kreit, John W. Respiratory Mechanics. Edited by John W. Kreit. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190670085.003.0001.

Abstract:
Ventilation can occur only when the respiratory system expands above and then returns to its resting or equilibrium volume. This is just another way of saying that ventilation depends on our ability to breathe. Although breathing requires very little effort and even less thought, it’s nevertheless a fairly complex process. Respiratory Mechanics reviews the interaction between applied and opposing forces during spontaneous and mechanical ventilation. It discusses elastic recoil, viscous forces, compliance, resistance, and the equation of motion and the time constant of the respiratory system. It also describes how and why pleural, alveolar, lung transmural, intra-abdominal, and airway pressure change during spontaneous and mechanical ventilation, and the effect of applied positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP).

Abstract:
This chapter recounts how Boltzmann reacted to Hermann Helmholtz’s analogy between thermodynamic systems and a special kind of mechanical system (the “monocyclic systems”) by grouping all attempts to relate thermodynamics to mechanics, including the kinetic-molecular analogy, into a family of partial analogies all derivable from what we would now call a microcanonical ensemble. At that time, Boltzmann regarded ensemble-based statistical mechanics as the royal road to the laws of thermal equilibrium (as we now do). In the same period, he returned to the Boltzmann equation and the H theorem in reply to Peter Guthrie Tait’s attack on the equipartition theorem. He also made a non-technical survey of the second law of thermodynamics seen as a law of probability increase.
