Abstract:
Today’s critical discourses and theorizing vanguards agree on the importance of getting lost, of failure, of erring — as do life coaches and business gurus. The taste for a departure from progress and other teleologies, the fascination with disorder, unfocused modes of attention, or improvisational performances cut across wide swaths of scholarly and activist discourses, practices in the arts, but also in business, warfare, and politics. Yet often the laudible failures are only those that are redeemed by subsequent successes. What could it mean to think errancy beyond such restrictions? And what would a radical critique of productivity, success, and fixed determination look like that doesn’t collapse into the infamous ‘I would prefer not to’? This volume looks for an answer in the complicated word field branching and stretching from the Latin errāre. Its contributions explore the implications of embracing error, randomness, failure, non-teleological temporalities across different disciplines, discourses, and practices, with critical attention to the ambivalences such an impossible embrace generates.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the Federal Writers' Project's (FWP) sensory nostalgia for regional food as a cathartic reaction to the standardization of taste triggered by the industrialization of the U.S. food system since the late nineteenth century. Categories of race and gender interplayed in the New Deal sensory economy both to buffer sensory change and to allow its critique. Women often took the blame for the decreased sensory quality of American food, making the 1930s a significant moment in the elaboration of conservative gender roles that dominated the war and postwar period. To counter this feminine threat, New Deal food writing held “virile” and uncorrupted tastes as the pinnacle of American cuisine, which, as the analysis of racial interaction in public cooking events shows, often meant tapping into the raw sensory power of racial others.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the conceptual background against which Wordsworth’s engagement with monastic history developed. It does so by identifying The White Doe of Rylstone as central to Wordsworth’s scheme to regenerate the moral wellbeing and aesthetic taste of the reading public, an ambition that particularly concerned him between 1807 and 1815. The chapter analyses Wordsworth’s attempt to purify the romance revival with reference to The WhiteDoe’s intertextuality with Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene. In addition, an examination of the poems and epigraphs printed with the first edition of The White Doe, and of the ‘Essay, Supplementary to the Preface’ (1815), illuminates what Wordsworth meant when, in 1807, he said that ‘to be incapable of a feeling of Poetry … is to be without love of human nature and reverence for God’. The chapter proposes that this statement underpins stylistic developments that occurred in Wordsworth’s poetry after 1807.

Abstract:
What does it mean and what has it meant to be a Black female intellectual? What does it mean to be a race woman? When and where are the sites of race women’s becoming? Brittney Cooper argues that to arrive at an answer to the first question, we must diligently interrogate and examine the latter questions. Race women were the first Black women intellectuals. As they entered into public racial leadership roles beyond the church in the decades after Reconstruction, they explicitly fashioned for themselves a public duty to serve their people through diligent and careful intellectual work and attention to “proving the intellectual character” of the race. Pauline Hopkins declared two key tasks attached to the work of the “true race-woman.” They were “to study” and “to discuss” “all phases of the race question.” Not only were these women institution builders and activists; they declared themselves public thinkers on race questions. Though Hopkins and her colleagues were part of a critical mass of public Black women thinkers in the 1890s, they joined a longer list of Black women who had been at the forefront of debates over “the woman question” and the role of Black women in public life throughout the 1800s.
