Abstract:

HAMON, GUILLOUET MARIE-CHRIST. "La mere chez freud." Paris 8, 1989. http://www.theses.fr/1990PA080437.

Full text
Abstract:
In order to dispel the idea that freud focuses on the father - to the detriment of the mother -, one has to reread his complete works. It then becomes clear that references to the mother are, in fact, closely aligned to the key concepts of castration, phallic phase and oedipal complex in his theorization of psychoanalysis. The texts of freud demand a rigourous analysis to be understood - more in chemical terms as a "decomposition" than an exegesis. Likewise, a textual study of freud's references to other works in his 1931 article on female sexuality brings to the fore major issues that he initially set down and opened to discussion. Thus, one way to understand the theorization of freud and his underlying epistemology is to reveal his mode of reflexion on a complex and concrete object- the mother

van, Geest Justin. "Metre in the Music of Anton Webern." Thesis, McGill University, 2014. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=123278.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, I examine Anton Webern's metrical practice. Metrical issues seem to have been a preoccupation for the composer, evidence of which is found in, among other sources, sketch material (Bailey 1995) and metrical features of the published works, as I will show. While scholars have acknowledged the richness of metre in Webern's works (e.g., Berry 1976, Boulez 1991), relatively little metrical analysis has been undertaken; in particular, analyses that account for entire works are relatively rare, and no attempt has been made to investigate metre in depth across Webern's œuvre. In this investigation, I aim to make progress on both of these fronts. The heart of this investigation is its two analytical chapters, in which I discuss metre and metrical issues in four earlier works—opp. 3/i, 5/i, 7/iii, and 11/i—and five later works—opp. 21/i, 22/ii, 28/ii, 29/i, and 31/v. One of the central concerns in this investigation is the relationship between musical surface and notated metre, an issue that arises frequently in existing metrical analyses of Webern's works. I discuss the different manifestations of this relationship and what these indicate about Webern's conceptions of metre. Among the themes that arise in this investigation are the mitigation of metrical structure, connections between metre and form, the "spatialization of meter" (Hasty 1997), metrical ambiguity, "non-committal" metre signatures, the fragmentation of the musical surface, and the employment of "metrical cells."
21/i, 22/ii, 28/ii, 29/i, et 31/v).

Abstract:
This thesis studies uncertainty measures, especially credibility measure, as well asthe possibility of their application in actuaries. In order to generalize credibility theory,a new fuzzy measure is proposed, called c − credibility measure. C − credibilitymeasure on X is a set function that satisfies normality, monotonicity, self-duality andmaximality. Certain properties of the c−credibility measure are proved, such as, forexample, subadditivity and semicontinuity. Furthermore, an integral based on thismeasure is defined, in analogy to the existing integrals, and its properties are proved. Then, the credibility measure in a fuzzy environment is introduced as the aggregatevalue of the possibility and necessity measures.

Kurtz, Heidi. "Stress, etymology and metre in four Canterbury Tales." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.605566.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the prosody of Middle English and how the rhythmic structures of the language are manifested in metrical verse. I examine how tension is created through the matching or mis-matching of lexical stress with the expected metrical template and test an analysis proposed here to empirically measure different degrees of tension in verse. The analysis is applied to four selected tales from the Hengwrt manuscript of Chaucer's Canterburry Tales, as well as to selections of verse with known metrical structures from later periods of English in order to corroborate the analysis results with a series of control samples. The aim is to examine the metrical structure of Chaucer's verse in relation to how sequences Of lexically stressed syllables, syllable sequences based on the stress patterns in polysyllabic words, tit between the metrical boundaries of line beginnings and line ends. I ask if there is a correlation between the best-fit of lexical stress sequences and what has been established about the poem's metrical structure without violating that structure. It is this degree of correlation that gives a measure of metrical tension. The methodology developed for this analysis involves identifying the etymological origin and, in turn, the lexical stress pattern of each word in the text, then substituting the resulting lexis with either etymological or stress markers. This allows both the lexical stress and etymological patterns to be mapped throughout the text. After the words in the texts were substituted with their corresponding markers, a sub-corpus of purely Germanic lines, in which lexical stress is marc stable in late Middle English, is identified and analysed for comparison alongside the complete texts. 10 addition to the lexical stress test, a test is carried out on the lines after the stress substitution, confirming the degree to which they had a predominantly iambic rhythm. The results from the etymological analysis are striking. The etymological analysis shows that the placement of Latinate words is greatest at line-final and pre-caesural positions, and that that there are correlative concentrations of Germanic vocabulary at line-initial and post-caesural positions. The mirroring of Latinate and Germanic concentrations of vocabulary at caesural positions gives additional evidence to support the metrical role of caesura I marks within the Hengwrt manuscript, despite the fact that the marks were added by a later hand. The results of the analysis provide clear evidence for the existence of caesura in verse. The results of the stress analysis arc more problematic. On closer examination, the methodology for identifying label ling mismatches across the lines suffered from a lack of specificity. The analysis showed a slight preference for s-initial stress feet which could be used to indicate a degree of tension or counterpoint in verse. The results arc made more meaningful by associating specific mismatches with specific positions in the lines. In light of this, several suggestions were made on how the analysis could be improved and used to identify bracketing mismatches across the lines. The modified analysis will allow us to objectively quantify the tensions that arise between the interaction of trochaic and iambic lexical patterns and the metrical template of a given text. The approach developed in this thesis, j believe, brings us closer to answering the question to what degree has a poet developed metrical tension in his or her verse, and how has that tension been manifested while at the same time fulfilling metrical expectations.

Abstract:
This thesis examines constructions of what we might call popular readerships in early print. Focusing mainly on the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, it explores the ways in which a constituency of readers variously imagined as, for example, 'mean', 'common', or 'simple' are represented, instructed and discussed. As such, it is less an attempt to recover the reading habits of a particular social grouping, as rather an effort to trace contemporary attitudes towards that group‘s engagement with textual productions, and, more particularly, the anxieties that the perception of that engagement provoked. In doing so, I discuss the treatment of books and reading in an early printed conduct book, trace the attitudes of two particularly influential humanist writers, Desiderius Erasmus and Juan Luis Vives to reading, concentrating on their engagement with Bible-reading and women‘s reading respectively, before examining the importance of real and imagined 'common' readers in the religious disputes surrounding the production of vernacular Scripture. Here, I focus on the polemical disputations between English reformists-in-exile, and their conservative opponents, through the analysis of texts by Thomas More, William Tyndale, and, particularly, William Roye and Jerome Barlowe.

Scott, Daniel R. "Carbon fixation, flux and burial efficiency in two contrasting eutrophic lakes in the UK (Rostherne Mere & Tatton Mere)." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2014. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/16949.

Full text
Abstract:
Much of the current research into the processing and storage of carbon (C) in small lakes has focused on arctic and boreal lake systems, due to their global abundance. However this has led to an imbalance in the interpretation of lake functioning. Oligotrophic lakes are prevalent in the arctic and boreal zone, but are typically net heterotrophic due to loading of catchment-derived dissolved organic carbon (DOC) which alters their metabolic balance. In comparison, temperate lake systems tend to be more nutrient rich, typically due to anthropogenic activity, and would therefore be expected to exhibit the signs of net autotrophy, as a result of higher rates of gross primary production (GPP) and lower rates of catchment-derived DOC potentially subsidising respiration (R). In order to test the hypothesis that temperate, eutrophic lakes are net autotrophic (GPP > R) on an annual basis the C-dynamics of Rostherne Mere (maximum depth, zm, 31 m) and Tatton Mere (zm = 11 m), two monomictic Cheshire-Shropshire meres, were quantified over an 18 months period from 2010 2012. This monitoring study used high-resolution (hourly) oxygen (O2) sonde measurements, combined with high-resolution data from an automated on-lake monitoring buoy at Rostherne Mere (as part of the national UKLEON lake network) to calculate rates of epilimnion C-fixation. For both lakes, sediment traps were also used to determine water column C-flux and sediment core data to establish C-burial efficiency of these strongly stratifying lakes. Water column profiles of dissolved O2 and CO2 was also measured at 2 4 weekly intervals across both lakes. Particular attention was focused on: i) the long term C-storage of eutrophic, monomictic lakes; ii) up-scaling C-accumulation estimates from these two meres to the Cheshire-Shropshire meres region and all UK eutrophic waters; and iii) methodological sensitivity for estimating C-fixation, flux and burial efficiency and upscaling C-accumulation estimates. The results show that both lakes are net autotrophic on an annual basis, on average fixing 121 ± 2 g C m-2 yr-1 and sequestering 68 ± 4 g C m-2 yr-1, a C-burial efficiency of ~60%. If up-scaled to the Cheshire-Shropshire meres region, annual C-accumulation was estimated to be 506 ± 32 t C yr-1 or 0.05 ± 0.001 Mt C since 1900. From this, it was estimated that UK eutrophic waters could be sequestering 0.12 ± 0.01 Mt C yr-1 or 13.3 ± 0.2 Mt C since 1900. Annual UK CO2 emissions are ~128.85 Mt C yr-1, therefore UK eutrophic waters currently offset 0.09% of yearly UK CO2 emissions. Despite the finding that eutrophic, stratifying lakes have high C-fixation and sequestration values, lakes in other areas of the globe such as the arctic and boreal zones are typically a more important long term C-sink as they are far more abundant within the landscape and local soils are typically very poor within low C retention rates. Further investigation is needed into how lakes function on a regional and national scale, the importance of lake type and number when up-scaling C accumulation estimates and the potential impact on future C accumulation as a result of a changing environment and supra-regional policies in areas such as Europe.

Reestructurated fish products combining minced meagre and dietary fiber were developed in this work. In the first part of the work, the combination of microbial transglutaminase (MTGase) and dietary fibers (pea fiber, carrageenan fiber and konjac fiber) entailing the production of low-salt gel products from farmed meagre, was studied. MTGase addition improved gelation and had a favourable impact on texture, enabling the development of low-salt products. Inner pea dietary fiber also improved gel texture. The combination of carrageenan and konjac hardened meagre gels and enhanced water holding capacity. In the second part of the work, meagre sausages with antioxidant grape dietary fiber (FDAU) were developed, being the stability and antioxidant capacity, analysed during 98 days in refrigeration (2 ºC 2 ºC) and vacuum-packed. Sausages were remarkably stable over storage time. The FDAU had an effective antioxidant capacity and seemed to have some antimicrobial effect. The sensory assessment only pointed to some loss of textural quality, associated to the large granulometry of FDAU.

Abstract:
This study is a clinical research in psychopathology about a sample of 25 female persons who were met in the context of associations for rehabilitation. Our sample is specified by the quest for change of live and the activity of prostitution presented as a symptom of suffering. We tried to describe from taperecorded interviews the psychical processes that could lead to prostitution and the stakes in this behaviour involving particularly the body and sexuality. In this way the model of psycho-genesis, which is the fruit of a work of pre-investigation, of the lecture of autobiographies written by prostitutes and of novels, led us by their insufficiency to become interested in a model coming within an interactive topography (intra and inter psychical). The notions of "injonction" and "fourth personage" emerged from the clinical material and show themselves be determining for the understanding of the act of prostitution. The "injonction" is a mechanism of identification operating like a super-ego inscription. The "fourth personage" appears as a female figure "she", metaphor of a gap, to whom would be adressed the experience of prostitution. The challenge to this would give a psychical mobility, creating connection and fantasy. The "injonction" and the "fourth personage" find their operating efficacy only on the basis of a psycho-genesis in which we have observed permanent features. The life stories of these women are marked by an "incestuous illusion" to the mother and psychical traumatisms linked to a "confusion of language" between adults and children

Abstract:
The thesis deals with the history of the alliterative long line from Old English to both early and late Middle English, and demonstrates that the differences between the metrical systems of those periods are explicable in their entirety by the historical changes in the linguistic prosody rather than a discontinuity of the alliterative tradition. The first three chapters of the thesis examine the alliterative metre in Old English (primarily on the basis of Beowulf), early Middle English (primarily on the basis of Layamon's Brut), and late Middle English (primarily on the basis of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Morte Arthure, and the Siege of Jerusalem). The discussions pay particular attention to those points that are subsequently used in the historical reconstruction presented in the final chapter. At the same time, each of the period chapters aims to provide a coherent systemic formulation of the particular metre. The chief method employed by the study is the standard procedure of matching the linguistic and metrical data, as described in the introduction. The historical reconstruction is based on the premise that in particular types of poetic environments certain changes in the linguistic prosody will automatically result in a restructuring of the metrical system. The premise leads to a new version of the history of English alliterative poetry based on the concrete evidence of the extant texts.

Abstract:
Why did so many poets attempt English verse in Ancient Greek and Latin metres during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries? And what was at stake in these attempts? The most immediate importance of these questions to literary criticism is the fact that they mark one of the most striking and consistent points of contiguity between the verse-forms — and poetic theories — of poets commonly categorised as ‘Modernists’ and ‘Victorians’. This study uncovers a lineage of experimentation with classical metres connecting Algernon Charles Swinburne to Ezra Pound and H. D., in the process challenging received periodizations of English verse-history. The assumption that vers libre and metrical verse constitute alternate and incompatible paradigms prevents us from being able to perceive, in either of them, the endless performative possibilities that rhythm offers us — possibilities which, as I intend to demonstrate, underpin some of the period’s most influential experiments in verse-form. My close studies of these poetic forms raise another question: what is the ontological status of these poetic forms that pass through multiple languages and millennia? I frame my readings of English poetry in classical measures through the metaphor of the ghost because English poetry can only encounter classical metres as a kind of spectral or incomplete presence. I refer to this encounter, borrowing a term from Jacques Derrida, as ‘hauntology’: a situation of temporal, historical, and ontological disjunction that occurs when a being or entity, apparently present, is revealed to be an absent or continually-deferred (non-)origin. The hauntological character of English poems in classical measures is due not only to fundamental differences between the syntaxes and phonologies of Ancient Greek, Latin, and English, but also to the loss of knowledge concerning the traditions and conventions of metrical performance in Ancient Greek and Latin. This is why writing English poetry in classical metres generally poses a far greater challenge — both technically and conceptually — than writing English poetry in the metres of a living language: recreating classical metres in English requires reimagining the very nature of the encounter between poems and bodies, while also facing up to the quasi-magical charge that ‘the classical’ holds in the English literary imagination.
