Abstract:
This chapter outlines the semiotic theory presented in Ogden and Richards’ 1923 book The Meaning of Meaning and examines the historical context in which it was written. The motivating concern that runs through the entire book is the establishment of an adequate theory to fight the dangers of ‘word-magic’, the confusions engendered through ignorance of the workings of language. The chief influences on Ogden and Richards are shown to be the logical atomism of Bertrand Russell and Ludwig Wittgenstein and the significs of Victoria Lady Welby. The broader intellectual background of contemporary philosophy, psychology and linguistics against which these ideas were developed is also discussed, along with the influence of the social and political climate of the time.

Abstract:
Novel quantum concepts acquire content not by representing new beables but through material-inferential relations between claims about them and other claims. Acceptance of quantum theory modifies other concepts in accordance with a pragmatist inferentialist account of how claims acquire content. Quantum theory itself introduces no new beables, but accepting it affects the content of claims about classical magnitudes and other beables unknown to classical physics: the content of a magnitude claim about a physical object is a function of its physical context in a way that eludes standard pragmatics but may be modeled by decoherence. Leggett’s proposed test of macro-realism illustrates this mutation of conceptual content. Quantum fields are not beables but assumables of a quantum theory we use to make claims about particles and non-quantum fields whose denotational content may also be certified by models of decoherence.

Abstract:
This chapter is the first of two chapters concerned with whether life is meaningless. Many people fear that it is. They fear that we are like Sisyphus, who was condemned to pointlessness. The basis for these fears is discussed. The chapter then clarifies the question “Does life have meaning?” It is noted that there are different perspectives from which one can ask whether a life is meaningful. It is then argued that life can have meaning from various terrestrial perspectives (that is, it can have a purpose or point from such perspectives). Thus, a total nihilism about meaning is not warranted. This is the somewhat good news about meaning.
