Abstract:
Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy has been proven as an effective detection means for the label-free and nondestructive sensing of biochemical molecules based on their unique roto-vibrational transitions. However, the conventional THz spectroscopic system is unsuitable for minute material sensing due to its far-field detection scheme, low sample amount, and lack of spectral characteristics, leading to low absorption cross-sections and sensitivity. In this study, a 3D plasmonic structure based on a metal-coated woven-wire mesh (MCWM) was experimentally and numerically demonstrated for sensing trace amounts of analytes combined with THz spectroscopy. Dual sharp spectral features were exhibited in the transmission spectrum, originating from the resonant excitation of THz surface electromagnetic modes via the aperture and periodicity of the MCWM unit cell. According to the finite element simulation, an enhanced and localized surface field was formed at THz resonant frequencies and was concentrated at the metal gaps near the periodic corrugations of the MCWM, resulting in enormous resonant dip shifts caused by the tiny variations in membrane thicknesses and refractive indices. Different types and quantities of analytes, including hydrophilic biopolymer (PAA) membrane, nonuniformly distributed microparticles to mimic macro-biomolecules or cells, and electrolyte salts of PBS, were successfully identified by the MCWM sensor with the best thickness and refractive index sensitivities approaching 8.26 GHz/μm and 547 GHz/RIU, respectively. The demonstrated detection limit of thickness and molecular concentration could respectively achieve nanometer and femtomolar scales in PAA macromolecular detection, surpassing the available metallic mesh devices. The MCWM-based sensing platform presents a rapid, inexpensive, and simple analysis method, potentially paving the way for a new generation of label-free microanalysis sensors.

Abstract:
Multi-Carrier Waveform (MCW) modeling and design are envisioned as one of the most important and challenging for the 6th generation (6G) communication networks. In oppose to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms, new and innovative design techniques for MCWs have been designed and proposed in recent literature because of their performance superiority. The typical OFDM waveforms have dominated the previous generation of communication systems and proven their potential in many real-time communication environments, but it may not be sufficient to meet the ambitious target of 6G communication systems. Hence, need for new solutions like flexible MCWs and relevant technological advancements in waveform design are needed. This paper proposes designing and evaluating a new MCW design to meet the 6G requirements for spectral efficiency, throughput, and overall system capacity. On the transmitter side, the MCW design proposed in this article employs power domain multiplexing, such as Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA), and phase-rotations of the input signal to the Universal Filtered Multi-Carriers (UFMC) modulations, where the Base-Station (BS) assigns different power levels to each user while using the same frequency resources. MATLAB® simulations were performed to assess the proposed MCW performance. Detailed simulation data are employed for comparative performance analysis of the proposed MCW. The results have shown the superior performance of the proposed MCW approach compared to the conventional 5th generation (5G) NOMA-UFMC waveform.

Abstract:
The next generation communication network (NGCN) is expected to provide higher spectral efficiency, low latency, large throughput and massive machine-to-machine type communications. In this regard, the design of the multi-carrier waveform (MCW) is posing a major research problem for the NGCN. To overcome the stated problem, a lot of state-of-the-art work exists that proposes various MCW alternative to the standard orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform. It is true that OFDM was used in a number of real-time communication systems of fourth generation (4G) networks. However, their use in the upcoming fifth generation (5G) network is not very feasible. This is because of the strict requirements of 5G communication systems, which also extend beyond 5G systems; hence rendering the use of OFDM infeasible for newer communication standards. To satisfy the requirements of upcoming communication networks, there is a dire need for MCWs with better flexibility. In this regard, a precoding-based MCW has been proposed. The proposed MCW fulfills the requirements of the NGCN in terms of low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), high spectral efficiency and throughput. The MCW proposed in this work uses power-domain multiplexing such as non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and phase rotation by using the selective mapping (SLM) and generalized chirp-like (GCL) precoding of the input signal to the universal filtered multi-carriers (UFMC) modulations. Statistical analysis of the PAPR is presented by using the complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF). The MATLAB® simulations have been carried out to implement the CCDF of PAPR and results show that a PAPR gain of 5.4 dB is obtained when the proposed waveform is compared with the standard NOMA-UFMC waveform at clip rate of 10−3, using 4-QAM.

Background: The provision of home-based care for frail older adults in Italy and Israel is predominately provided by live-in migrant care workers (MCWs). However, despite the important role that they play in filling the demand for home care, MCWs often experience labor rights violations. This not only impacts the well-being of MCWs but also leads to lower-quality care being provided to people in need of support. Method: This scoping review used Arksey and O’Malley’s methodological framework to map literature. This article aims to analyze the scope, main topics, themes and gaps in the existing academic literature on how micro and macro level indicators impact the working and living conditions of live-in MCWs in Italy and Israel. Scopus, Pubmed, and Web of Science Core Collection were searched for peer-reviewed articles. Search terms were adapted from the Multilevel Framework of Transnational Care Migration (MFTCM). Themes were developed using Braun and Clarke’s method for conducting reflexive thematic analysis. Articles were included if they focused on Italy and/or Israel, included analysis on the working and living conditions of live-in MCWs at the macro and/or micro levels, were written in English, and were published between 2015 and 2020. Results: Out of the 1088 articles retrieved, 33 met the inclusion criteria. A total of 18 articles focused on Italy and 14 on Israel, and one focused on both Italy and Israel. The majority of articles in Italy (84 per cent) and Israel (53 per cent) included analysis on care regimes. Only 37 per cent of articles in Italy and 20 per cent in Israel included analysis on gender regimes. At the micro level, 80 per cent of articles in Israel discussed Power/Class Asymmetry, compared to 37 per cent in Italy. In total, six themes were developed. At the macro level, these themes included funding care work, MCWs as a pragmatic approach, care in the home, and valuing care work. At the micro level, the themes included being part of the family, and perceptions on class asymmetries. The findings presented in this review show that MCWs in both Italy and Israel face many of the same challenges in accessing decent work opportunities, despite contrasting employment and migration policies in each country. This can be partially attributed to the undervaluing of care work because of racialized and gendered notions of care. At the macro level, this has contributed to a lack of political will to develop long-term sustainable solutions to create or monitor decent work standards for MCWs. At the micro level, this has led to power imbalances between MCWs and people in need of care and their family members, resulting in MCWs being expected to work hours beyond those contractually allowed, having little to no time off, and experiencing emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. Conclusion: This study provides a review of the most recent contributions to the fields of labor migration and health concerning the MCW markets in Italy and Israel. While there have been many studies in each country that detail the labor rights violations experienced by MCWs, this is the first review that develops themes around the underlying causes of these violations. By thematically analyzing the findings of recent studies and current gaps in existing knowledge, this scoping review assists in building the groundwork for the development and implementation of policy, strategies, practice and research to improve the rights and migration experiences of MCWs.

Abstract:
The effects of incubating monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM) with liquid hog manure (LHM) on P availability and uptake by Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) were evaluated in a 99-d growth chamber experiment. Liquid hog manure with (0.738 g P kg−1 fresh LHM) or without MCPM was aerated for a 21-d period at 24 °C. The soils used in this experiment were an Ormstown silty clay loam (Orthic Humic Podzol), and a Ste. Rosalie clay loam (Humic Podzol). Five treatments were applied to each soil: (i) control with no LHM or MCPM additions, (ii) MCPM, (iii) LHM incubated without MCPM, (iv) LHM incubated with MCPM, and (v) the separate applications of MCPM and LHM incubated without MCPM. Rates of MCPM and LHM applications were 513 kg P2O5 ha−1 and 32 t ha−1, respectively. Incubating LHM with MCPM resulted in a loss of 6% of the total manure-N during the 3-wk incubation period, compared with a 67% loss from the unamended LHM. Additions of both MCPM and LHM had the same effect on shoot-P contents and soil P fractions regardless of whether the materials had been incubated together or added to the soil separately. When compared with adding MCPM only, LHM-MCPM mixtures resulted in greater ryegrass shoot-P contents for plants growing on the Ste. Rosalie soil. However, this increase was approximately equal to the response to LHM additions, and thus presumably not due to improved MCPM P availability. Additions of both LHM and MCPM did not affect soil inorganic P forms compared with the lone addition of MCPM, but sodium hydroxide extractable organic P and sodium bicarbonate extractable organic P tended to be higher when just MCPM was added. Abstract:
Melanoma cell adhesion molecule (MCAM, CD146, MUC18) is a heavily glycosylated transmembrane protein and a marker of melanoma metastasis. It is expressed in advanced primary melanoma and metastasis but rarely in benign naevi or normal melanocytes. More and more evidence has shown that activation of the MCAM on cell surface plays a vital role in melanoma progression and metastasis. However, the natural MCAM binding ligand that initiates MCAM activation in melanoma so far remains elusive. This study revealed that galectin-3, a galactoside-binding protein that is commonly overexpressed in many cancers including melanoma, is naturally associated with MCAM on the surface of both skin and uveal melanoma cells. Binding of galectin-3 to MCAM, via O-linked glycans on the MCAM, induces MCAM dimerization and clustering on cell surface and subsequent activation of downstream AKT signalling. This leads to the increases of a number of important steps in melanoma progression of cell proliferation, adhesion, migration, and invasion. Thus, galectin-3 is a natural binding ligand of MCAM in melanoma, and their interaction activates MCAM and promotes MCAM-mediated melanoma progression. Targeting the galectin-3–MCAM interaction may potentially be a useful therapeutic strategy for melanoma treatment.

Autologous bone marrow cell (BMC) transplantation has been shown as a potential approach to treat various ischemic diseases. However, under many conditions BMC dysfunction has been reported, leading to poor cell engraftment and a failure of tissue revascularization. We have previously shown that skeletal muscle angiogenesis induced by electrical stimulation (ES) is impaired in the SS/Mcwi rats and that this effect is related to a dysregulation of the renin angiotensin system (RAS) that is normalized by the replacement of chromosome 13 derived from the Brown Norway rat (SS-13BN/Mcwi consomic rats). The present study explored bone marrow-derived endothelial cell (BM-EC) function in the SS/Mcwi rat and its impact on skeletal muscle angiogenesis induced by ES. SS/Mcwi rats were randomized to receive BMC from: SS/Mcwi; SS-13BN/Mcwi; SS/Mcwi rats infused with saline or ANG II (3 ng·kg−1·min−1). BMC were injected in the stimulated tibialis anterior muscle of SS/Mcwi rats. Vessel density was evaluated in unstimulated and stimulated muscles after 7 days of ES. BMC isolated from SS/Mcwi or SS/Mcwi rats infused with saline failed to restore angiogenesis induced by ES. However, BMC isolated from SS-13BN/Mcwi and SS/Mcwi rats infused with ANG II effectively restored the angiogenesis response in the SS/Mcwi recipient. Furthermore, ANG II infusion increased the capacity of BM-EC to induce endothelial cell tube formation in vitro and slightly increased VEGF protein expression. This study suggests that dysregulation of the RAS in the SS/Mcwi rat contributes to impaired BM-EC function and could impact the angiogenic therapeutic potential of BMC.

Abstract:
The SS-16BN/Mcwi consomic rat was produced by the introgression of chromosome 16 from the Brown Norway (BN/NHsdMcwi) rat onto the genetic background of the Dahl salt-sensitive (SS/Mcwi) rat by marker-assisted breeding. We have previously shown that the normotensive SS-16BN/Mcwi consomic strain is better protected from developing left ventricular dysfunction and fibrosis with aging than the hypertensive SS/Mcwi parental strain; however, the mechanism of this protection was not clear since the SS-16BN/Mcwi had both lowered blood pressure and an altered genetic background compared with SS/Mcwi. Microarray analysis of SS-16BN/Mcwi and SS/Mcwi left ventricle tissue and subsequent protein pathway analysis were used to identify alterations in gene expression in signaling pathways involved with the observed cardioprotection on the SS background. The SS-16BN/Mcwi rats exhibited much higher mRNA levels of expression of transcription factor JunD, a gene found on chromosome 16. Additionally, high levels of differential gene expression were found in pathways involved with angiogenesis, oxidative stress, and growth factor signaling. We tested the physiological relevance of these pathways by experimentally determining the responsiveness of neonatal cardiomyocytes to factors from identified pathways and found that cells isolated from SS-16BN/Mcwi rats had a greater growth response to epidermal growth factor and endothelin-1 than those from parental SS/Mcwi. We also demonstrate that the SS-16BN/Mcwi is better protected from developing fibrosis with surgically elevated afterload than other normotensive strains, indicating that gene-gene interactions resulting from BN chromosomal substitution confer specific cardioprotection. When combined with our previous findings, these data suggest that that SS-16BN/Mcwi may have an increased angiogenic potential and better protection from oxidative stress than the parental SS/Mcwi strain. Additionally, the early transient idiopathic left ventricular hypertrophy in the SS-16BN/Mcwi may be related to altered myocyte sensitivity to growth factors.

Abstract:
Retention of nitrogen in manure to be used for crop production and to reduce environmental pollution is an essential management component. The effects of monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM) and aeration on N retention in liquid hog (Sus scrofa domesticus) manure (LHM) were investigated under laboratory conditions. The manure received 0, 20 or 40 g of MCPM kg−1 of LHM (0, 250 or 500 g MCPM kg−1 manure solids) and was incubated over a 15-d period with and without aeration. Manure pH decreased with added MCPM and then remained constant, but pH increased with time when MCPM was not added. Losses of NH3 from hog manure were significantly reduced by added MCPM, but increased significantly with aeration where MCPM was not added to the manure. The NH4-N content of LHM was higher where MCPM was added to the manure. Conversely, the NH4-N content tended to decrease with aeration in the absence of MCPM. Total N content of LHM was significantly decreased where MCPM was not added to the manure. Aeration had no significant effect on total N. It was concluded that addition of MCPM can increase the NH4-N content of LHM by decreasing NH3-N losses through acidification of the manure. Senior high school students need to select a specialization, such as Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, or Language and Culture. This selection process can be improved by using Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods. When MCDM methods are implemented, AHP method has accuracy of 61%, whereas AHP-Fuzzy TOPSIS 1 and AHP-Fuzzy TOPSIS 2 have accuracy of 75%. This research implements tests and analyzes new MCDM method, which is Hybrid MCDM Model, in helping aforementioned specialization selection process. There are four basic steps in Hybrid MCDM Model: performing experimental design to obtain attributes' weight and criteria, evaluating MCDM with the three existing methods, performing RSM regression to derive mathematical model, and decision making. This research introduces data normalization to the mathematical model which results in better implementation of Hybrid MCDM Model in the senior high school students' specialization selection process. Hybrid MCDM Model in the senior high school student specialization selection has accuracy of 86%, which includes 11% accuracy improvements compared to other applied MCDM methods.

Abstract:
The best–worst method (BWM) has recently demonstrated its applicability in addressing various decision-making problems in a practical setting. The traditional BWM method is based on deterministic information gathered from experts as pairwise comparisons of several criteria. The advantage of BWM is that it uses fewer calculations and analyses while maintaining good, acceptable consistency ratio values. A multi-choice best–worst method (MCBWM), which considers several options for pairwise comparison of preferences between the criteria, has recently been developed. The experts are given the option to select values from several comparison scales. The MCBWM technique has been shown to be better. Presenting the options for which an optimal solution has been found simplifies the calculation and establishes the ideal weight values. This study proposes two different mathematical programming models for solving multi-criteria decision-making problems having multiple decision-makers. The two methods are proposed considering the multi-choice uncertainty assumption in pairwise criteria comparisons. Additionally, it considers the best–worst method as the base model. The multi-choice uncertainty is applied to determine the best choice out of multiple choices. It gives a real-life scenario to the decision-making problems. Although there are many other forms of uncertainty, such as fuzzy, intuitionistic fuzzy, neutrosophic, probabilistic, etc., it focuses on choices instead of ambiguity in terms of the probabilistic or fuzzy nature of parameters. The parameter considered as multi-choice is the pairwise comparison. These parameters are handled by applying the Lagrange interpolating polynomial method. The proposed models are novel in terms of their mathematical structure and group decision-making approach. The models are formulated and further validated by solving numerical examples. Determination of the genetic factors that control the progression of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) to heart failure has been difficult despite extensive study in animal models. Here we have characterized a consomic rat model of LVH resulting from the introgression of chromosome 16 from the normotensive Brown Norway (BN) rat onto the genetic background of the Dahl salt-sensitive (SS/Mcwi) rat by marker assisted breeding. The SS-16BN/Mcwi consomic rats are normotensive but display LVH equivalent to the hypertensive SS/Mcwi rats at early ages. In this study we tracked the development of LVH by echocardiography and analyzed changes in cardiac function and morphology with aging in the SS-16BN/Mcwi, SS/Mcwi, and BN to determine if the consomic SS-16BN/Mcwi was a model of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Aging SS-16BN/Mcwi rats showed no evidence of heart failure or impaired cardiac function upon extensive analysis of left ventricle function by echocardiography and pressure-volume relationships, while their parental SS/Mcwi experienced deterioration in function between 18 and 36 wk of age. In addition aging SS-16BN/Mcwi did not exhibit tissue remodeling common to pathological hypertrophy and HCM such as increased fibrosis and reduced capillary density in the myocardium. In fact, SS-16BN/Mcwi were better protected from developing LV fibrosis with age than either the hypertensive SS/Mcwi or normotensive BN parental strains. This suggests that a gene or genes on chromosome 16 may be involved with both blood pressure regulation and preservation of cardiac function with aging.

Classification algorithm selection is an important issue in many disciplines. Since it normally involves more than one criterion, the task of algorithm selection can be modeled as multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) problems. Different MCDM methods evaluate classifiers from different aspects and thus they may produce divergent rankings of classifiers. The goal of this paper is to propose an approach to resolve disagreements among MCDM methods based on Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. Five MCDM methods are examined using 17 classification algorithms and 10 performance criteria over 11 public-domain binary classification datasets in the experimental study. The rankings of classifiers are quite different at first. After applying the proposed approach, the differences among MCDM rankings are largely reduced. The experimental results prove that the proposed approach can resolve conflicting MCDM rankings and reach an agreement among different MCDM methods.

This paper fulfills this research gap.Design/methodology/approachThe authors use a systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis approach to analyze the applications of MCDM methods in research on CS.FindingsThe authors have observed that both single and integrated MCDM methods have been used in this domain; however, single MCDM methods are dominant. Further, this review shows that most of the integrated methods use only two MCDM methods and that there has been no comparison of results obtained from different MCDM methods. After reviewing these developments and summarizing the findings, the authors propose directions for future research, including investigating and formulating strategies for specific CS initiatives, integrating three or more MCDM methods, integrating MCDM methods with optimization techniques, analyzing results from a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) perspective, reconsidering the tenets of existing theories via MCDM methods, and comparing the results of studies of CS in different kinds of economies, as well as the results of using different MCDM methods.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first study that has conducted a systematic literature review to analyze applications of MCDM methods to different aspects of corporate sustainability, including enablers of and barriers to CS, the evaluation and design of CS initiatives, system or strategy formulation, and performance evaluation, among others.

Despite the necessity to monitor the research growth of a research topic to identify its trends and gaps, and hence shed light on research areas that warrant future research attention, there is a lack of systematic literature analysis in MCDM area. To fill this gap, this paper recruited a mixed-review method of scientometric and systematic reviews of 56 research papers on seven selected popular MCDM techniques published from 2010 to March 2021. The scientometric review identified the most prolific journals, keyword correlations, and geospatial connections between research countries in the MCDM area. On the other hand, the systematic review analysis showed that there are five main research topics in MCDM. Furthermore, the major approaches applied in MCDM research were investigated.

Expression of MCAM is observed in a variety of human malignancies. We aimed to determine the rate of MCAM expression in our non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) collection and to clarify its correlation with clinicopathological parameters and patient survival. 85 NSCLC were analysed immunohistochemically using a monoclonal MCAM antibody (clone N1238) on an NSCLC tissue micro array. The staining was semiquantitatively scored. We found MCAM expression in 51% of NSCLC, preferentially squamous cell carcinomas (p=0.004). No other correlations to tumour size, grade, or stage were found. Univariate survival analysis showed no significant differences of MCAM positive and negative tumours. In adenocarcinomas however, MCAM positivity was significantly associated with shorter patient survival (p=0.016). We conclude, that MCAM is expressed in a high proportion of NSCLC and might be predictive of shortened patient survival in adenocarcinomas of the lung. We analyzed the frequency and absolute numbers of MCAM+ lymphocytes (memory helper T [mTh] cells, naive helper T cells, CD8+ T cells, and B cells) in the peripheral blood (PB) and the CSF of patients with MS and NMOSD, treated with/without disease-modifying drugs (DMDs) or steroids, using flow cytometry.ResultsThe frequency of MCAM+ cells was higher in the mTh cell subset than that in other lymphocyte subsets. A significant increase in the frequency and the absolute number of MCAM+ mTh cells was observed in the PB of patients with NMOSD, whereas no increase was observed in the PB of patients with MS. The frequency of CSF MCAM+ mTh cells was higher in relapsing patients with MS and NMOSD than that in the control group. Although there was no difference in the frequencies of MCAM+ lymphocytes among the DMD-treated groups, fingolimod decreased the absolute number of MCAM+ lymphocytes.DiscussionMCAM+ mTh cells were elevated in the CSF of relapsing patients with MS and in both the PB and CSF of patients with NMOSD. These results indicate that MCAM contributes to the pathogenesis of MS and NMOSD through different mechanisms. MCAM could be a therapeutic target of CNS IDDs, and further study is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanism of MCAM in CNS IDD pathogenesis.

Understanding the factors that regulate homing and survival of metastatic cancer cells in the bone is important for the identification of new therapeutic targets. High MCAM expression has been detected in the stroma of lytic and blastic lesions in preclinical models of PCa bone metastasis. The objective of this study is to characterize the role of MCAM in the maintenance of the aggressive phenotype in human PCa. Methods: We knocked and down MCAM in the lytic PC-3M-Pro4Luc2_dTomato and in the blastic C4-2B_dTomato PCa cell lines. Validation was done at both protein and RNA level. We performed functional assays such as migration and proliferation. RT-qPCR was used to test MCAM knockdown on EMT markers. The effect of the knockdown on the maintenance of cancer stem/progenitor-like cells was measured by ALDEFLUOR. Results: MCAM knockdown reduced proliferation in PC-3M-Pro4Luc2_dTomato PCa cells and resulted in increased E-Cadherin expression. Metastatic human PCa cells target the hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) niche in the bone marrow at the level of an “endosteal/osteoblast” niche and a “vascular/perivascular” niche. We set-up an in vitro model of “osteoblast niche” to study the prostate cancer cells upon co-culture with osteoblasts and to determine the effects on cancer stem/progenitor-like markers. We found that MCAM is required for the osteoblast-mediated induction of ALDH activity on PCa cells and MCAM knockdown prevented the increase in the size of the ALDHhigh subpopulation in PC-3M-Pro4Luc2_dTomato, mediated by human osteoblasts. Additionally, MCAM knockdown in PCa cells co-culture with osteoblast, prevented the induction of MCAM expression by osteoblasts. Finally, MCAM is significantly increased in the ALDHhigh cells and identifies a new subset of ALDHhigh / MCAMhigh cells which could be depleted upon MCAM knockdown. Conclusions: We detected a new subset of ALDHhigh/MCAMhigh cells and demonstrated the MCAM influences the maintenance of an aggressive-mesenchymal phenotype in human PCa. Therefore, MCAM represent an interesting target molecule to modulate the behavior of aggressive PCa cells.

A scientific evaluation and prioritization approach is proposed by solving the MCDM problems with triangular hesitant fuzzy preference relations (THFPRs). Firstly, the concepts of THFPRs are defined, and a series of aggregation operators is introduced and their corresponding properties are discussed. Then, we define the consistency of the THFPRs and propose two methods to measure consistency. Furthermore, we construct an MCDM model using THFPR (MCDM-THFPR) to help decision makers assess and prioritise alternatives in the decision making process. Lastly, the validity and feasibility of the proposed MCDM-THFPR method for the MCDM are verified by a comparison with two previous approaches, along with certain discussions.

Abstract Extravasation and tissue infiltration of leukocytes and metastatic tumor cells require the regulated expression and function of adhesive and pro-proteolytic surface molecules. We demonstrate here that human T cells, upon activation, neo-express the melanoma metastasis-associated surface molecule MUC18/melanoma cell adhesion molecule (MCAM). Expression of MUC18/MCAM (CD146) on T cells could be identified with two mAbs (541-10B2 and 541-2E5) obtained after immunization with HUT102 T cells and found to react with activated T cells. The specificity of our mAbs for MUC18/MCAM (CD146) was revealed by 1) definition of the appropriate molecular mass of approximately 110 kDa unreduced and 120 kDa reduced, 2) reactivity of mAbs with MUC18/MCAM (CD146) cDNA-transfected mouse L cells, 3) conclusive crosswise immunoblotting experiments with MUC18/MCAM (CD146)-specific mAbs, and 4) N-terminal amino acid sequencing of precipitated protein. In vitro activation by PHA caused neo-expression of MUC18/MCAM (CD146) on peripheral blood T cells within 1 day of stimulation, reaching a maximum on day 3. In vivo expression of MUC18/MCAM (CD146) was confirmed on CD3+ T cells infiltrating delayed-type hypersensitivity lesions of the skin, on synovial fluid T cells of rheumatoid arthritis patients, and on distinct T leukemia cells. MUC18/MCAM (CD146) cell surface expression on activated T cells is mirrored by the presence of specific mRNA. Leukocytes of healthy donors do not show significant MUC18/MCAM (CD146) expression. The finding that MUC18/MCAM (CD146) is also expressed on activated T cells might suggest that this adhesion molecule is involved in the extravasation and/or homing of activated T cells.

In this regard, 143 published scientific articles from 2016 to 2020 were retrieved from the Scopus database, selected and reviewed. They were categorized according to the decision problem associated with SDGs issues, the MCDM methodological approach, including the use (or not) of fuzzy set theory, sensitivity analysis, and multistakeholder approaches, the context of MCDM applications, and the MCDM classification (if utility-based, compromise, multi-objective, outranking, or other MCDM methods). The widespread adoption of MCDM methods in complex contexts confirms that they can help decision-makers solve multidimensional problems associated with key issues within the 2030 Agenda framework. Besides, the state-of-art review provides an improved understanding of this research field and directions for building a research agenda for those interested in advancing the research on MCDM applications in issues associated with the 2030 Agenda framework.

There are many multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) methods applicable to material selection. It may produce considerable differences between the material selection results. However, it is unknown which MCDM method has more rational result and there is no rational method to determine final overall performance scores of alternative materials. We propose a new method to determine final overall performance scores and final ranks of alternative materials combined with results from different MCDM methods in material selection. The outline is as follows. First, calculate the overall performance scores and ranks of the alternative materials using some different MCDM methods. Second, calculate mean values of the rank correlation coefficients between the rankings obtained from different MCDM methods and assign the mean values as the priority weights of each MCDM method. Finally, calculate the weighted mean values of the overall performance scores obtained from different MCDM methods and determine them as final overall performance scores of the alternative materials. To illustrate the effectiveness, we apply the proposed method to select best tool holder materials. The method may help material designers and engineers to apply different MCDM methods to material selection and multi-objective optimization of material composition and process, much more effectively and actively.

These methods have been widely applied in the area of sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) because of their computational capabilities. This paper conducts a systematic literature review on MCDM methods applied in different areas of SSCM. From the literature search, a total of 106 published journal articles have been selected and analyzed. Both individual and integrated MCDM methods applied in SSCM are reviewed and summarized. In addition, contributions, methodological focuses, and findings of the reviewed articles are discussed. It is observed that MCDM methods are widely used for analyzing barriers, challenges, drivers, enablers, criteria, performances, and practices of SSCM. In recent years, studies have focused on integrating more than one MCDM method to highlight methodological contributions in SSCM; however, in the literature, limited research papers integrate multiple MCDM methods in the area of SSCM. Most of the published articles integrate only two MCDM methods, and integration with other methods, such as optimization and simulation techniques, is missing in the literature. This review paper contributes to the literature by analyzing existing research, identifying research gaps, and proposing new future research opportunities in the area of sustainable supply chain management applying MCDM methods.

The presence of anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPAs) in the serum is one of the immunological features of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP) assay has been widely used in clinic for the diagnosis of RA. However, up to 40% of RA patients are anti-CCP negative and the diagnostic sensitivity in this population needs to be improved for better clinical management. In this study, peptides with Multiple Citrulline Similar Motif (MCSM) were synthesized and a new ELISA system, which we called RA_CP, was developed to detect citrullinated antigens with MCSM present in the serum. 106 RA,48 other arthritis patients and 41 sex- and age-matched healthy controls (HCs) were included in this study. Patients with RA have a significantly higher amount of citrullinated antigens with MCSM than other arthritis patients and HCs. RA patients with positive anti-CCP are also MCSM positive, whereas 75% anti-CCP negative patients are positive for MCSM. The diagnostic sensitivity for anti-CCP and MCSM was 81.1% and 95.3%, while the specificity was 100% and 94.4%, respectively. ROC curve analyses showed that the area under the curve (AUC) values were 0.906 (95% CI: 0.860-0.951) for anti-CCP and 0.948 (95% CI: 0.912-0.985) for MCSM while the combination of MCSM and anti-CCP test has the highest AUC (0.971, 95% CI: 0.946–0.996). Our results suggest that detection of citrullinated antigens with MCSM has improved sensitivity compared with anti-CCP assay and could serve as a biomarker in diagnosis of RA patients.

Considering some complex multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) problems, in which decision environment is dynamic, there are various interdependences among criteria, and plans (systematized alternatives) consisting of multiple time sequential interdependent actions, cannot be well handled by means of the existing MCDM methods, therefore, we develop a systematic decision making (SDM) as an improvement and supplement of the classic MCDM in this paper. The SDM is for prescribing methods of evaluating and selecting the most favourite plan (a system) from a group of feasible ones concerning influences of time-varying criteria system under dynamic external environment. Through detailed analysis, we separate a SDM problem into multi-period MCDM subproblems, and then a plan can be a combination of time sequential strategies in which each strategy (a subset of actions) is a feasible decision choice of corresponding MCDM sub-problem. After clarifying variety of interdependences, interactions and interrelationships in the SDM problems, such as criteria-interdependences, action-interdependences, interactions between criteria and criteria system, interactions between actions and strategies, interactions between strategies and plans, interactions between internal environment (criteria system) and external environment, feedbacks from external environment to the corresponding MCDM sub-problems, and interrelationships among MCDM sub-problems and so on, we transform the SDM into multi-period interrelated MCDM model which can be dealt with more easily by using multiple optimization models. At the end of the paper, three typical properties of the SDM are proposed and most of the existing MCDM models are pointed out as special cases of the SDM.

Abstract:
The present review examines decision-making methods developed for dealing with uncertainties and applied to solve problems of civil engineering. Several methodological difficulties emerging from uncertainty quantification in decision-making are identified. The review is focused on formal methods of multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM). Handling of uncertainty by means of fuzzy logic and probabilistic modelling is analysed in light of MCDM. A sensitivity analysis of MCDM problems with uncertainties is discussed. An application of stochastic MCDM methods to a design of safety critical objects of civil engineering is considered. Prospects of using MCDM under uncertainty in developing areas of civil engineering are discussed in brief. These areas are design of sustainable and energy efficient buildings, building information modelling, and assurance of security and safety of built property. It is stated that before long the decision-making in civil engineering may face several methodological problems: the need to combine fuzzy and probabilistic representations of uncertainties in one decision-making matrix, the necessity to extend a global sensitivity analysis to all input elements of a MCDM problem with uncertainties, and an application of MCDM methods in the areas of civil engineering where decision-making under uncertainty is presently not common.

Monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM) with chemical formula of Ca(H2PO4)2.H2O is a water-soluble and powerful agent for metal ion immobilization (removal) in soil and water. The use of MCPM can, therefore, be considered as an innovative and effective way to remove the leachable heavy metals from copper smelting slag. This study aims to (1) characterize copper smelting slag and perform the batch precipitation tests using MCPM, (2) analyze the treated copper smelting slag (residue) by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and (3) elucidate the mechanism of MCPM on leachable heavy metal removal from slag.The experimental results demonstrated that MCPM effectively removes Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr and Zn metal ions from copper smelting slag under different MCPM concentrations and reaction times. In addition, the XRD analysis reveals the formation of insoluble metal phosphates such as Cd3(PO4)2, Cu2(PO4)2OH, Fe3(PO4)2, Mn3(PO4)2, Pb3(PO4)2 and Zn3(PO4)2 in the residue of copper smelting slag.

Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) introduces a model for weights determination maximizing efficiency of the decision-making units. The primary focus of the DEA model is to compare decision-making units (alternatives) in terms of their efficiency in converting inputs into outputs. The multicriteria decision making (MCDM) method VIKOR uses a common set of weights expressing a decision maker's preferences. In contrast, the CCR model of DEA does not provide a common set of weights that could express the preferences of a decision maker. The weights in MCDM do not have a clear economic significance, but their use provides the opportunity to model the real aspects of decision making, such as the preference structure. A comparison of DEA and MCDM shows that DEA resembles MCDM, but the results differ. In spite of these differences, DEA could be used as a supplement for screening alternatives within MCDM. An application of DEA and MCDM is illustrated by an example of hydropower system planning.

The ubiquity of mobile computing devices, such as smartphones and tablets, and the proliferation of mobile customer relationship management (mCRM) applications, may lead to increased CRM adoption and higher returns on CRM technology investments. The purpose of this study is to attempt to extend the current literature by developing a model of mCRM antecedents and outcomes by incorporating the idiosyncratic mCRM characteristics that have not yet been examined in the sales technology literature. Design/methodology/approach – This research utilizes the technology acceptance model and the technology-to-performance chain as the foundation of a conceptual model of the drivers and outcomes of mCRM adoption. Findings – This conceptual study provides several contributions to both the sales technology literature and to practitioners within sales organizations. The proposed conceptual model outlines the benefits of providing mCRM capabilities to sales professionals. These benefits include increased productivity, sales activity and collaboration among both internal stakeholders (management and peers) and external stakeholders (prospects and customers). Originality/value – Despite the increased use of mobile applications in sales, research on this particular form of technology is limited, and sales researchers have yet to examine mCRM or its relationship to sales performance. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to forward a conceptual model that allows researchers to explore the drivers of mCRM use and how mCRM influences individual and organizational-level outcomes.

Bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNCs) increase capillary density and reduce fibrosis in rodents after myocardial infarction, resulting in an overall improvement in left ventricular function. Little is known about the effectiveness of BMMNC therapy in hypertensive heart disease. In the current study, we show that delivery of BMMNCs from hypertension protected SS-13BN/MCWi donor rats, but not BMMNC from hypertension susceptible SS/MCWi donor rats, resulted in 57.2 and 83.4% reductions in perivascular and interstitial fibrosis, respectively, as well as a 60% increase in capillary-to-myocyte count in the left ventricles (LV) of hypertensive SS/MCWi recipients. These histological changes were associated with improvements in LV compliance and relaxation (103 and 46.4% improvements, respectively). Furthermore, improved diastolic function in hypertensive SS/MCWi rats receiving SS-13BN/MCWi derived BMMNCs was associated with lower clinical indicators of heart failure, including reductions in end diastolic pressure (65%) and serum brain natriuretic peptide levels (49.9%) with no improvements observed in rats receiving SS/MCWi BMMNCs. SS/MCWi rats had a lower percentage of endothelial progenitor cells in their bone marrow relative to SS-13BN/MCWi rats. These results suggest that administration of BMMNCs can prevent or reverse pathological remodeling in hypertensive heart disease, which contributes to ameliorating diastolic dysfunction and associated symptomology. Furthermore, the health and hypertension susceptibility of the BMMNC donor are important factors influencing therapeutic efficacy, possibly via differences in the cellular composition of bone marrow.

In January 2014, over 10,000 gallons of methyl-cyclohexane methanol (MCHM) leaked into the Elk River in West Virginia, in a chemical spill incident that contaminated a large portion of the state’s water supply and left over 300,000 residents without clean water for many days and weeks. Initial efforts to remove MCHM at the treatment plant centered on the use of granulated activated carbon (GAC), which removed some of the chemical from the water, but MCHM levels were not lowered to a “non-detect” status until well after the chemical plume had moved downstream of the intake. Months later, MCHM was again detected at the outflow (but not the inflow) at the water treatment facility, necessitating the full and costly replacement of all GAC in the facility. The purpose of this study is to investigate the hypothesis that preferential absorbance of one of the two MCHM isomers, coupled with seasonal variations in water temperature, explain this contrary observation. Calculated intermolecular potentials between ovalene (a large planar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) and the MCHM isomers were compared to physisorption potentials of MCHM onto an amorphous carbon model. While a molecular mechanics (MM) force field predicts no difference in the average interaction potentials between the cis- and trans-MCHM with the planar ovalene structure, MM predicts that the trans isomer binds stronger than the cis isomer to the amorphous carbon surface. Semi-empirical and density functional theory also predict stronger binding of trans-MCHM on both the planar and amorphous surfaces. The differences in the isomer binding strengths on amorphous carbon imply preferential absorbance of the trans isomer onto activated charcoal filter media. Considering seasonal water temperatures, simple Arrhenius kinetics arguments based on these predicted binding energies help explain the environmental observations of MCHM leeching from the GAC filters months after the spill. Overall, this work shows the important implications that can arise from detailed interfacial chemistry investigations.

A major difficulty in comparing and even choosing MCDM methods is the uncertainty of information about the consistent and unique characteristics of the results produced. The objective information content of the final scores produced by MCDM methods and their relevance to real life can give us an important idea about them. In this study, first of all, seven MCDM methods with different methodologies were applied to evaluate companies’ financial performance. Then, the obtained MCDM scores were compared using two different objective verification mechanisms. The first validation criterion is the relationship of a MCDM method to real-life rankings (share price). The second criterion is the standard deviation (SD) technique used to discover the objective information content of MCDM final scores. According to the results of this study, PROMETHEE and FUCA definitely outperform other methods in terms of both SD values and strength of correlation with reference real-life rankings. Also, FUCA is methodologically simpler than other methods. However, it produced nearly identical results as the sophisticated PROMETHEE method.

Background. The dysregulation of circular RNAs (circRNAs) participates in the malignant progression of multiple cancers, including osteosarcoma (OS). However, the role of circ_0097271 in OS development remains unclear. We thus aimed at unveiling the functional role and mechanism of circ_0097271 in OS. Methods. The expressions of circ_0097271, miR-640, and MCAM in OS were analyzed by qPCR. Cell proliferation and migration were inspected by CCK-8 assay, colony formation assay, and Transwell assay. Circ_0097271’s role in vivo was assayed by establishing animal models. The predicted binding relationship between miR-640 and circ_0097271 or MCAM was verified by dual-luciferase reporter or RIP assay. Results. Circ_0097271’s expression was enhanced in OS samples and cells. The knockdown of circ_0097271 restrained OS cell growth and migration, and its downregulation also blocked solid tumor growth in vivo. Circ_0097271 targeted miR-640 and negatively modulated miR-640 expression. MiR-640 was poorly expressed in OS, and its depletion recovered OS cell growth and migration that were repressed by circ_0097271 knockdown. MiR-640 bound to MCAM 3’UTR and thus suppressed MCAM expression. MCAM knockdown repressed OS cell growth and migration, while additional miR-640 depletion partially abolished the anticancer effects of MCAM knockdown in OS cells. Conclusion. Circ_0097271 is an oncogenic driver and contributes to OS development via targeting the miR-640/MCAM pathway, which provides a potential opinion for OS treatment.

Development trends (Research Trends) in scientific research on the methods of Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) and Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) in agriculture are analyzed. Established bibliometric techniques are applied. MCDA/MCDM methods are being very intensively developed in recent years, as evidenced by the number of scientific papers published annually in renowned scientific journals indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) database. In the years 1979-2015 a total of 1,355 scientific articles were collected in the database. The number of articles published annually increased rapidly after 2005. Besides, the annual number of citations of the publications is increasing. Research on MCDA/MCDM is conducted in many research areas. In the years 1984-2015 the Web of Science database accumulated 27 scientific publications on MCDA/MCDM in agriculture area. Therefore, it can be concluded that the MCDA/MCDM issues are currently not sufficiently analyzed in relation to agriculture. In the future this subject will probably be further developed, an increasing number of scientists will conduct research on the MCDA/MCDM and the annual number of articles published in the field will increase.

The aim of this paper is to propose an MCDM method based on the improved single-valued neutrosophic weighted geometric (ISVNWG) operator. First, the defects of several existing single-valued neutrosophic weighted geometric aggregation operators in terms of producing uncertain results in some special cases are analyzed. Second, an ISVNWG operator is proposed to avoid the defects of existing operators. Further, the properties of the proposed ISVNWG operator, including idempotency, boundedness, monotonicity, and commutativity, are discussed. Finally, a single-valued neutrosophic MCDM method based on the developed ISVNWG operator is proposed to overcome the defects of existing MCDM methods based on existing operators. Application examples demonstrate that our proposed operator and corresponding MCDM method are effective and rational for avoiding uncertain results in some special cases.

In this paper, two most known MCDM methodologies, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution), are used for intelligent building assessment under fuzzy environment for dealing with the evaluations’ uncertainty and imprecision in which the expert's comparisons that are represented as fuzzy numbers. Cement matrices are known from concrete testing. Cement-asphalt matrices made of cement and asphalt emulsion are used in mineral-cement-emulsion mixes (MCEM). The matric strength in MCEM mixtures has not been studied so far. Cement-asphalt matrices with 0/1 mm rubber powder are proposed by the author for use in the MCEM [3, 26]. In this paper the results of the investigation of the mechanical properties of matrices are presented for comparative purposes and for the preliminary evaluation of their suitability for MCEM. The following tests were made: indirect tensile strength, bending strength, compressive strength and rigidity modules in NAT and 4 PB-PR.
