Abstract:
The Hashemites, descendants of the Prophet of Islam, have assumed from medieval to contemporary period the governorship of the holy sites in Mecca and Medina. Their alliance with Great Britain and France during the First World les to creation of the two Hashemite kingdoms of Transjordan and Iraq in 1921, enabling them to successfully impose their sovereignty on the Middle Eastern political scene. This thesis proposes to analyze, over a long period (1910-1951), the religious, diplomatic, and political role of the Hashemite family in explaining how the authority and influence of this family moved outside the Arabian Peninsula to the region of Bilād al-Šām. It is about revising the creation of Transjordan, the Hashemite project of Greater Syria and the Hashemite’s position vis-à-vis the Palestinian case with its religious, regional and international dimensions. The project of this thesis aims to study the Hashemite project for unity and independence in the Levant, with the main objective of making this question more comprehensible

Abstract:
Since the latter half of the twentieth century patterns of economic flows and the deployment of systems of production have encouraged greater political and social integration between nation states. This phenomenon, called globalisation, has reinvigorated debate about the nation state as a mode of organisation, and created the conditions for an ongoing natural experiment concerning state adjustment. This experiment, while on a global scale, has led to different responses from national governments, as each grappled with how best to accommodate both domestic and international interests. One neglected aspect of analysis in these processes is the role played by national bureaucracy in state adjustment as a means to move with globalising pressures or to resist their impact. This thesis presents a qualitative analysis of the interaction of one globalising process, foreign direct investment (FDI), and the workings of the nation state, as a means of assessing the way in which the national government has used regulatory processes and its bureaucracy to control FDI. An extended historical case study is used to examine changes in policy, regulation and the organisation of the national bureaucracy concerned with FDI in Australia. The period examined is from 1968 to 2004 enabling comparisons to be made across the experience of seven successive national governments (those led by prime ministers Gorton, McMahon, Whitlam, Fraser, Hawke, Keating and Howard) in the way they managed the domestic and international circumstances that impacted on FDI. This thesis makes a contribution to the literature on the interaction of globalising processes, the nation state and the role played by national public bureaucracies where national and transnational interests intersect. In particular, this thesis identifies the national bureaucracy as a key agent for government in enabling and domesticating the processes of globalisation. This finding demonstrates that national bureaucracy is significant as both a facilitator and the inhibitor of processes of globalisation, and therefore is a key factor in understanding the issues of state adjustment in studies of globalisation.

Treadway, William T. "Wrestling with the Past: How National Wrestling Lost Its Regional Heritage." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2018. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1404529/.

Full text
Abstract:
Through a combination of stringent and deceptive corporate control of sources, as well as an academic blind spot on certain low-brow subcultures, there has been a lack of serious study of the various regional professional wrestling traditions that crossed the United States until the end of the 1980s. An in-depth examination of a wide range of books, newsletters, and interviews shows a rich history with a deep economic, social, and creative diversity that has been largely ignored as the industry has moved towards monopolization under Vincent Kennedy McMahon. The various regions are divided into three groups: those that closed on their own, those that fell in competition with McMahon, and those that survived into the era of national corporate pro wrestling. This organization challenges the narrative that regional pro wrestling came to an end solely due to the business power of McMahon. The first group looks at Northern California, Southern California, Georgia, and North Texas. The second group examines the independent wrestling companies Mid-South Wrestling and the American Wrestling Association, and their attempts to compete with McMahon on a national level. The group also explores how the intense local fan bases in Portland and Memphis buoyed the local pro wrestling promotions for a time from outside competition from McMahon. The third group contains Jim Crockett Productions and the World Wide Wrestling Federation. These two organizations eventually became the two major corporate wrestling entities World Championship Wrestling and the World Wrestling Federation, respectively. A glossary of terms is included.

Underwood, III Maj Robert E. "The Moral Reality of War: Defensive Force and Just War Theory." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2009. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/philosophy_theses/53.

Full text
Abstract:
The permissible use of defensive force is a central tenet of the traditional legal and philosophical justification for war and its practice. Just War Theory holds a nation’s right to resist aggressive attack with defensive force as the clearest example of a just cause for war. Just War Theory also stipulates norms for warfare derived from a conception of defensive force asserted to be consistent with the moral reality of war. Recently, these aspects of Just War Theory have been criticized. David Rodin has challenged the status of national defense as an uncontroversial just cause. Jeff McMahan has charged that Just War Theory’s norms that govern warfare are inconsistent with the norms of permissive defensive force. In this thesis I defend the status of national defense as a clear case of a just cause. However, my defense may require revision of Just War Theory’s norms that govern warfare.

Abstract:
Predicting language outcomes in children who at age two are "late talkers" is a concern of Speech Language Pathologists. Currently, there is no conclusive data allowing specialists to predict which children will outgrow their delays and which children will not. The purpose of the present study is to analyze the effect of a receptive language delay on the outcome of the slow expressive language delayed child, and determine whether or not it is a viable predictor of poor outcomes. The subject information used in this project was compiled from the data collected and reported by Paul (1991) during the Portland Language Development Project (PLDP). Children in the PLDP first participated in the longitudinal study between the ages of twenty to thirtyfour months. They were categorized as being slow in expressive language development if they produced fewer that fifty intelligible words during this age range. They were then subgrouped into an expressive-receptive delayed group if they scored more than one standard deviation below the mean on the Reynell Developmental Language Scales. Of the twenty-five subjects with complete data over the five years of the study, nineteen were considered to be solely expressively delayed, while the remaining six were classified as having both an expressive and a receptive language delay. Lee's Developmental Sentence Scoring (DSS) (1974) was used to track the subject's expressive language abilities to the age of seven. DSS scores were analyzed yearly, using the Mann-Whitney nonparametric statistical test. This would determine whether the subjects considered to be both expressively and receptively delayed were exhibiting more difficulties in their expressive language abilities than those subjects with expressive delays alone. The results of the study indicated that significant differences did not exist between the two groups. Therefore, there was insufficient evidence to conclude that a receptive language delay at twenty to thirty-four months of age is a feasible predictor of lasting expressive language delays. This leads to the recommendation that additional research be conducted focusing on areas other than receptive language abilities as being predictors of poor expressive language outcomes.

Tremblay-Boucher, Vincent.

Full text
Abstract:

Spearing, Ian Gregory. "Improving the refrigeration and gas liquefaction performance of Gifford-McMahon and active magnetic regenerative cryocoolers: a study of flow maldistribution, unbalance, and asymmetry." Thesis, 2000. https://dspace.library.uvic.ca//handle/1828/9859.

Full text
Abstract:
Cost-effective liquefaction of gases at cryogenic temperatures requires a combined approach of designing efficient refrigeration cycles to generate cooling capacity and designing efficient liquefaction processes to utilize that capacity. This dissertation addresses both approaches for improvement of the liquefaction process. Magnetic refrigeration employing the magnetocaloric effect of ferromagnetic materials has been identified as potentially more efficient and cost-effective than conventional refrigeration systems. One magnetic cycle that shows promise for efficiently achieving cooling over large temperature spans is active magnetic regenerative refrigeration (AMRR). In this cycle the magnetic material serves the dual functions of work input and thermal regeneration, however the operation is complex with coupled fluid, thermal, and magnetic phenomena and a clearer understanding of the regenerative operation is required. Models to elucidate the flow characteristics of the regenerative heat exchangers of rotary AMRR and Gifford-McMahon (GM) systems using a commercially available computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software package are described. Theoretical results are presented to qualify and quantify the effect of maldistributed flow within regenerators. Experimental results of an improved regenerator for the GM system based on the CFD flow simulations are presented. Efforts to develop an improved AMRR thermal model using the commercial package are also described. The second approach for the design of efficient liquefiers addresses a drawback of the usual embodiment of the AMRR cycle, namely, the provision of cooling at a single temperature which necessitates that cryogenic designs have multiple stages providing cooling over a range of discrete temperatures for an efficient liquefaction process. Use of multiple stages leads to increased expense and complexity. A simple, inexpensive plumbing change of the flow through the regenerator of a single-stage device can significantly increase the overall liquefaction capacity compared to the usual flow configuration making additional staging unnecessary. This dissertation describes the alternative flow arrangement, known variously as “bypass flow,” “permanent flow,” or “DC flow,” which is suitable for all passive and active regenerative refrigeration cycles used as liquefiers. Theoretical results showing increased liquefaction capacity when bypass flow is employed are given for active magnetic regenerative and Gifford-McMahon systems. Experimental results are presented for a single-stage GM refrigerator modified for bypass flow which demonstrates increased liquefaction capacity.

Cruz, Sara Vieira. Master's thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1822/41519.

Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to provide an overview understanding of the key moral issues raised by war, with a special emphasis on the dilemmas posed by modern warfare and the contemporary academic debate. Starting from the traditional theory of Just War advocated by Michael Walzer, we focus mainly on the tension between this theorist and his main opponent, Jeff McMahan. At issue is the sustainability of the orthodox paradigm, the logic and moral independence between Jus ad bellum and Jus in Bello advocated by Walzer and the main assumptions underlying the traditional theory: the moral equality of combatants and non-combatant immunity. The individualist character of McMahan's proposal implies a disruption with Walzer´s collectivist approach and its premises. In this sense we have devoted much of our attention to the moral scrutiny of terrorism, counterterrorism and to the implications and challenges of both for Just War Theory. The peculiarities of modern warfare, which as we shall see challenge the very concept of war, make it imperative an analysis of the nature, legitimacy and moral implications of using drones as a favored weapon in the war on terror. The use of this equipment is a source of numerous ethical and humanitarian concerns since it seems to be radically at odds with the morality that underlies the principles of Just War Theory.

Jeffrey, KORY. "Moral Liability to Self-Defense: Challenging Jeff McMahan's Fact-Relative Account." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1974/7564.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is the normative base of moral liability to defensive harm. Many argue that liability is what makes it morally permissible to seriously injure or kill in self-defense or in the defense of others. Authors such as Jonathan Quong and Jeff McMahan argue that liability not only has important implications for the individual morality of self-defense, but that it plays a major role in the principles of just war conduct. How you determine when someone is liable will have a significant impact on when someone can be harmed. In this paper, I focus on the question of what a person must do to be morally liable to defensive harm. More specifically, I take a close look at Jeff McMahan’s moral responsibility account of liability and argue that it is unsatisfying as an explanation of when and why a person is liable. I then argue that an evidence-based account of liability better captures our moral intuitions surrounding liability. I end by considering an argument put forward by Quong on why we should not support an evidence-based account of liability.

Abstract:
China and India claimed two territories along their borders on the Himalayas: Aksai Chin in the west and the North-East Frontier Agency in the east. The border dispute escalated and, on October 20, 1962, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) opened fire on the two fronts and advanced into the disputed territories. One month later, on November 21, China declared a unilateral ceasefire and withdrew behind its disputed line of control. In response, the Indian government arrested over 2,000 Chinese living in India and interned them in Deoli, Rajasthan. When the Chinese were released between 1964 and 1966, they found their properties sold off by the Indian government. Many left India and immigrated to Canada. I interviewed four Indian-born Chinese who were interned and who now live in the Greater Toronto Area. I recorded their accounts of life in Deoli Detention Camp in Rajasthan.
