Abstract:
The family Pectinaceae are the only bivalves that have been well documented as swimmers (DeMont, 1992), although Ensis minor has been observed to swim (McMahon and McMahon, 1983). The behaviour was once regarded only as an escape response (Gade, 1981; McMahon and McMahon, 1983), but some studies suggest seasonal migrations are involved (Gruffydd, 1976; DeMont, 1990). DeMont (1990) suggests that they swim at the natural frequency of the shell-hinge system for more efficient use of energy.

Abstract:
A series of four poems were generated as a result of McMahon’s reimmersion into an elite swimming culture where she purposely revisited emotional and mental pain experienced 15 years earlier. Her reimmersion resulted in the re-engagement of torturous training and bodily regimes that other swimmers were subjected to and subjected themselves to. By presenting four evocative poetic representations, McMahon empowered and expressed her 40-year-old body’s sensations and experiences as she resubjected it to a culture that continues to torment her. These four poetic representations indeed assisted her to sort, ponder, and acknowledge her body’s experiences, voices, and her ever-evolving embodied consciousness. It is hoped that the audience will think and feel with McMahon’s bodily encounters, reflecting on them and drawing their own conclusions and understandings.

Abstract:
The Hashemites, descendants of the Prophet of Islam, have assumed from medieval to contemporary period the governorship of the holy sites in Mecca and Medina. Their alliance with Great Britain and France during the First World les to creation of the two Hashemite kingdoms of Transjordan and Iraq in 1921, enabling them to successfully impose their sovereignty on the Middle Eastern political scene. This thesis proposes to analyze, over a long period (1910-1951), the religious, diplomatic, and political role of the Hashemite family in explaining how the authority and influence of this family moved outside the Arabian Peninsula to the region of Bilād al-Šām. It is about revising the creation of Transjordan, the Hashemite project of Greater Syria and the Hashemite’s position vis-à-vis the Palestinian case with its religious, regional and international dimensions. The project of this thesis aims to study the Hashemite project for unity and independence in the Levant, with the main objective of making this question more comprehensible

Abstract:
Since the latter half of the twentieth century patterns of economic flows and the deployment of systems of production have encouraged greater political and social integration between nation states. This phenomenon, called globalisation, has reinvigorated debate about the nation state as a mode of organisation, and created the conditions for an ongoing natural experiment concerning state adjustment. This experiment, while on a global scale, has led to different responses from national governments, as each grappled with how best to accommodate both domestic and international interests. One neglected aspect of analysis in these processes is the role played by national bureaucracy in state adjustment as a means to move with globalising pressures or to resist their impact. This thesis presents a qualitative analysis of the interaction of one globalising process, foreign direct investment (FDI), and the workings of the nation state, as a means of assessing the way in which the national government has used regulatory processes and its bureaucracy to control FDI. An extended historical case study is used to examine changes in policy, regulation and the organisation of the national bureaucracy concerned with FDI in Australia. The period examined is from 1968 to 2004 enabling comparisons to be made across the experience of seven successive national governments (those led by prime ministers Gorton, McMahon, Whitlam, Fraser, Hawke, Keating and Howard) in the way they managed the domestic and international circumstances that impacted on FDI. This thesis makes a contribution to the literature on the interaction of globalising processes, the nation state and the role played by national public bureaucracies where national and transnational interests intersect. In particular, this thesis identifies the national bureaucracy as a key agent for government in enabling and domesticating the processes of globalisation. This finding demonstrates that national bureaucracy is significant as both a facilitator and the inhibitor of processes of globalisation, and therefore is a key factor in understanding the issues of state adjustment in studies of globalisation.

Treadway, William T. "Wrestling with the Past: How National Wrestling Lost Its Regional Heritage." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2018. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1404529/.

Full text
Abstract:
Through a combination of stringent and deceptive corporate control of sources, as well as an academic blind spot on certain low-brow subcultures, there has been a lack of serious study of the various regional professional wrestling traditions that crossed the United States until the end of the 1980s. An in-depth examination of a wide range of books, newsletters, and interviews shows a rich history with a deep economic, social, and creative diversity that has been largely ignored as the industry has moved towards monopolization under Vincent Kennedy McMahon. The various regions are divided into three groups: those that closed on their own, those that fell in competition with McMahon, and those that survived into the era of national corporate pro wrestling. This organization challenges the narrative that regional pro wrestling came to an end solely due to the business power of McMahon. The first group looks at Northern California, Southern California, Georgia, and North Texas. The second group examines the independent wrestling companies Mid-South Wrestling and the American Wrestling Association, and their attempts to compete with McMahon on a national level. The group also explores how the intense local fan bases in Portland and Memphis buoyed the local pro wrestling promotions for a time from outside competition from McMahon. The third group contains Jim Crockett Productions and the World Wide Wrestling Federation. These two organizations eventually became the two major corporate wrestling entities World Championship Wrestling and the World Wrestling Federation, respectively. A glossary of terms is included.

Underwood, III Maj Robert E. "The Moral Reality of War: Defensive Force and Just War Theory." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2009. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/philosophy_theses/53.

Full text
Abstract:
The permissible use of defensive force is a central tenet of the traditional legal and philosophical justification for war and its practice. Just War Theory holds a nation’s right to resist aggressive attack with defensive force as the clearest example of a just cause for war. Just War Theory also stipulates norms for warfare derived from a conception of defensive force asserted to be consistent with the moral reality of war. Recently, these aspects of Just War Theory have been criticized. David Rodin has challenged the status of national defense as an uncontroversial just cause. Jeff McMahan has charged that Just War Theory’s norms that govern warfare are inconsistent with the norms of permissive defensive force. In this thesis I defend the status of national defense as a clear case of a just cause. However, my defense may require revision of Just War Theory’s norms that govern warfare.

Abstract:
Predicting language outcomes in children who at age two are "late talkers" is a concern of Speech Language Pathologists. Currently, there is no conclusive data allowing specialists to predict which children will outgrow their delays and which children will not. The purpose of the present study is to analyze the effect of a receptive language delay on the outcome of the slow expressive language delayed child, and determine whether or not it is a viable predictor of poor outcomes. The subject information used in this project was compiled from the data collected and reported by Paul (1991) during the Portland Language Development Project (PLDP). Children in the PLDP first participated in the longitudinal study between the ages of twenty to thirtyfour months. They were categorized as being slow in expressive language development if they produced fewer that fifty intelligible words during this age range. They were then subgrouped into an expressive-receptive delayed group if they scored more than one standard deviation below the mean on the Reynell Developmental Language Scales. Of the twenty-five subjects with complete data over the five years of the study, nineteen were considered to be solely expressively delayed, while the remaining six were classified as having both an expressive and a receptive language delay. Lee's Developmental Sentence Scoring (DSS) (1974) was used to track the subject's expressive language abilities to the age of seven. DSS scores were analyzed yearly, using the Mann-Whitney nonparametric statistical test. This would determine whether the subjects considered to be both expressively and receptively delayed were exhibiting more difficulties in their expressive language abilities than those subjects with expressive delays alone. The results of the study indicated that significant differences did not exist between the two groups. Therefore, there was insufficient evidence to conclude that a receptive language delay at twenty to thirty-four months of age is a feasible predictor of lasting expressive language delays. This leads to the recommendation that additional research be conducted focusing on areas other than receptive language abilities as being predictors of poor expressive language outcomes.

Tremblay-Boucher, Vincent. "FLCAA : système de codage parcimonieux et d'analyse perceptuelle des signaux sonores en temps réel." Mémoire, Université de Sherbrooke, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/11143/6215.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract A nonlinear model describing the dynamic, fluid dynamics and thermodynamics of a dynamically balanced Gifford-McMahon (G-M) cryorefrigerator was developed. The cryorefrigerator consists of two horizontally opposed first- and second-stage displacers, a first- and a second-stage thermal regenerator, and a rotary valve that cycles the compressor supply gas pressure. The model accurately describes the motion of the displacers and the refrigeration produced at the two stages of the cold head. The analytical model consists of a set of twelve first order nonlinear differential equations. The numerical solution of the system is presented in the form of pressure histories in each chamber, position and velocity histories of each displacer, and P-V diagrams of the two stages of the cold head. The performance of the cryorefrigerator is calculated under various conditions. It is clearly shown that the device can achieve non-impacting displacer motion with sufficient cooling capacities of the two stages. This non-impacting operation creates a very low vibration device, which is valuable in applications where low vibration is required, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems. It was also shown that the cooling capacity of the device can be optimized over the operating frequency.

(Tibone, McMahon et al. 1998; Karduna, McClure et al. 2001; Abramowitch, Papageorgiou et al. 2003) Previous studies have measured joint kinematics using a variety of non-invasive methods that include: optical tracking, magnetic tracking, and mechanical linkage systems. (Rudins, Laskowski et al. 1997; Apreleva, Hasselman et al. 1998; Gabriel, Wong et al. 2004) These measurement devices report kinematics of rigid bodies with respect their own global coordinate system. However, it is often useful to understand these kinematics in terms of a coordinate system whose axes coincide with the degrees of freedom of each specific joint (anatomical coordinate systems). Once the kinematics are obtained with respect to the global coordinate system of the measurement device, the joint kinematics can be calculated with respect to anatomical coordinate systems if the relationship between the measurement device and the anatomical coordinate systems are known. Although the accuracy of these kinematic measurement devices is provided by the manufacturer, the effect of their accuracy on joint kinematics reported with respect to anatomical coordinate systems must be determined. (Panjabi, Goel et al. 1982; Crisco, Chen et al. 1994) For example, small errors in orientation of the measurement system could lead to large errors in position for an anatomical coordinate system located at some distance away. As researchers report joint kinematics with respect to the anatomical coordinate systems, understanding the errors produced by one’s measurement device with respect to the anatomical coordinate systems is necessary. Further, a great deal of interest exists for studying knee joint kinematics. (Sakane, Livesay et al. 1999; Lephart, Ferris et al. 2002; Ford, Myer et al. 2003) Within our research center our goal is to collect knee joint kinematics of a cadaver and reproduce them with respect to the anatomical coordinate systems using robotic technology. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the effect of the accuracy of three measurement devices (optical tracking device-OptoTrak® 3020, magnetic tracking device-Flock of Birds®, instrumented spatial linkage-EnduraTec Corp.) on knee joint kinematics reported with respect to an anatomical coordinate system.

Abstract:
Abstract One of the most promising technologies to enable and enhance large survey capabilities for radio astronomy is the use of focal plane phased array antenna feeds, or more simply, phased array feeds (PAFs). PAFs allow for full and continuous coverage of the telescope’s field of view (FoV), and combined with cryogenic amplifiers, can result in survey speed improvements several orders of magnitude better than current multiple-feed-horn cameras. In order to locate cryogenic PAF elements and amplifiers at the telescope focal plane, a radio-frequency transparent vacuum vessel is required. Unlike typical radomes, the transmission properties must be exceptionally good when dealing with weak astronomical signals. The dome must also be sufficiently strong to carry the mechanical load on the vacuum vessel due to atmospheric pressure. Furthermore, the thermal loading on the internal cryogenic stages from the dome must be manageable for the cooling system. We have solved these problems by using a combination of welded polyethylene sheet to maintain the vacuum integrity and a closed-cell rigid foam to transfer the mechanical load to the opposite side of the vessel (a welded aluminum structure). The PAF elements and amplifiers operate at 20 K, while the foam transfers the mechanical load through an 80 K temperature stage, which also serves as a low-temperature radiation shield for the 20 K sections. The poor thermal conductivity of the foam, combined with G10-CR thermal standoffs on the opposite side, ensures the 80 K stage is sufficiently thermally isolated from room temperature conduction. The radiative loading is reduced via the usual employment of multi-layer insulation. In order to facilitate instrument maintenance and future upgrades, a modular PAF element mechanical strategy is employed. The design is such that a PAF-element-amplifier unit can be replaced without accessing the 20 K stage owing to the use of a “cryo-clamp” that uses materials with different coefficients of thermal expansion to tightly hold the units when cold. Cooling is supplied by three two-stage Gifford-McMahon cryo-coolers. This paper presents these design details for the cryostat of the ALPACA (Advanced L-Band Phased Array Camera for Arecibo), an instrument currently being designed and built for the 305 m radio telescope of the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.
