L’incipiente formazione in Italia di una società multietnica, alle soglie del nuovo millenio, ha contribuito a ravvivare l’interesse di studiosi e di artisti per la diaspora italiana del secolo scorso. Il presente lavoro prende in esame il romanzo Vita (2003) di Melania Mazzucco e il film Nuovomondo (2006) di Emanuele Crialese con il proposito di svelare alcune significative convergenze nel recupero della memoria collettiva dell’emigrazione italiana negli Stati Uniti tra l’Otto e il Novecento. Si metteranno in evidenza gli elementi tematici e le strutture narrative specifiche con cui vengono intessute narrazioni che, sia nel romanzo sia nel film, mescolano Storia e finzione, concretizzando una visione ravvicinata e ‘dal basso’ di un passato cancellato, la quale suscita nel fruitore una risposta etica.

Abstract:
AimProsthetic joint infection (PJI) represents the second most frequent complication of total joint arthroplasty (TJA) with up to 20% of low-grade PJI treated as aseptic failure. Sensitive diagnostic criteria have been provided by EBJIS. However, to date there is no single test to reliably diagnose all PJIs. Studies of Mazzucco et al. and Fu et al. suggest that synovial fluid (SF) viscosity could be considered as an important marker for PJI. The primary aim of our study was to determine if SF viscosity is a more reliable diagnostic criterion of PJI than the SF cell count with differential (CCD), and the combined diagnostic value of SF viscosity and CCD.MethodWe prospectively analysed the viscosity of SF samples obtained during TJA of hip and knee revisions. We sampled 2.5–5mL of SF for viscosity and CCD. Intraoperatively, 1mL of the sample was analysed for the CCD. The remaining SF was centrifuged for 4min at 7000rpm. The viscosity of the supernatant was determined on Ostwald viscometer as the time required to pass the viscometer at 20°C. During each surgery at least 5 microbiological and multiple histopathological samples were harvested, and explant sonication was performed. The diagnosis was based on EBJIS definition. The viscosity threshold for detecting PJI was set at 65 seconds.ResultsBetween December 2020 and January 2023, we analysed 65 knee and 47 hip TJA revision procedures. There were 55 septic and 57 aseptic diagnoses. As a diagnostic marker of PJI, SF viscosity achieved 100% sensitivity and 82.5% specificity, with area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.832 (95% CI 0.739, 0.925). The specificity and sensitivity of SF CCD were 98.2% and 78.2%, respectively, with AUC of 0.921 (95% CI 0.869, 0.974). Of the 10 cases incorrectly diagnosed as aseptic based on SF viscosity, 2 were acute traumas and 8 metalloses. The SF CCD in all these cases was <0.5. Of the 12 cases incorrectly diagnosed as aseptic based on SF CCD, 6 cases were culture negative, 4 C. acnes and 2 S. epidemidis isolates in microbiology. Taken together, SF viscosity and CCD achieved a combined AUC of 0.953 (95% CI 0.919, 0.987).ConclusionsOur study is the first to report that SF viscosity is more sensitive but slightly less specific for PJI than SF CCD. The study demonstrates diagnostic value of combining SF viscosity with CCD in decision making in TJA revision surgery.

Mazzucato (2021a y 2022) propone un cambio en el papel del Estado y aboga por una intervención activa y colaborativa en la creación de mercados mediante el diseño de misiones. Desafía el enfoque regulatorio previo y destaca la importancia de la intervención estatal directa en investigación, producción y adquisición de vacunas anticovid. Este trabajo analiza los riesgos del diseño de misiones desde la teoría del principal-principal. A pesar de las recomendaciones de Mazzucato (2021b) sobre condiciones para la inversión pública, como intervenciones en la estructura del negocio y precios, las misiones revelan debilidades. Las empresas farmacéuticas mantuvieron patentes, impusieron condiciones y se beneficiaron económicamente de fondos públicos, lo que evidenció límites económicos en asimetrías de información, costos de transacción y desequilibrio de incentivos. En conclusión, el enfoque de Mazzucato ha generado oportunidades y desafíos. Aunque busca fortalecer al Estado, la realidad muestra fallas profundizadas en su intervención económica y da cuenta de problemas como la ambigüedad entre invención e innovación y la falta de cumplimiento de las recomendaciones planteadas.

Fertility rate is one of the most important global indexes. Past researchers found models which fit to age-specific fertility rates. For example, mixture probability density functions have been proposed for situations with bi-modal fertility patterns. This model is less useful for unimodal age-specific fertility rate patterns, so a model based on skew-symmetric (skew-normal) pdf was proposed by Mazzuco and Scarpa (2011) which was flexible for unimodal and bimodal fertility patterns. In this paper, we introduce skew-logistic probability density function as a better model: its residuals are less than those of the skew-normal model and it can more precisely estimate the parameters of the model.

In this article, we will reflect on the problems dealing with the translation of the lexis in contemporary literary texts. We will also study how lexis is the immediate reflection of the polyphony that prevails in the current narrative. In order to do this, first of all we will analyse the characteristics of the novels currently being published in Italy. Once we have established that lexical hybridization is one of the main ways of writing in many contemporary literatures (other than Italian), we shall go on to deal with the problems that arise during the translation of non-standard lexis.<p>Assuming that lexis is something that cannot be isolated from the rest of the text, and that other aspects, such as morphosyntax, must be always taken into account, we will study some examples from the translation into Spanish (by Xavier González Rovira) of Melania G. Mazzucco’s novel <i>Un giorno perfetto</i>, where the variety of the protagonists’ voices is clearly apparent. In order to maintain this polyphony, it will be necessary (apart from translating the mere meaning of a word or expression) to find equivalents for a specific register, as well as a style and some particular connotations that reflect the different ways of speaking found in Mazzucco’s work.<p>

Nessa perspectiva, o Estado deve sair da frente (desregulamentar), diminuir (privatizar-se) e deixar seguir (liberalizar). Esse é o consenso que ainda prevalece no Banco Central Europeu, chefiado pelo ex-banqueiro que cuida dos mercados financeiros, e no Reino Unido no governo liderado pelo ex-publicitário David Cameron do Partido Conservador, por meio de políticas de austeridade em relação ao gasto público. Estas, portanto, são as prescrições de política para a recuperação do crescimento econômico pós-crise de 2008: mais finança privada, menos Estado social. O livro The entrepreneurial State: debunking public vs. private sector myths, da professora Mariana Mazzucato, do SPRU – University of Sussex, contrapõe-se a esta visão e argumenta que o Estado tem papel estratégico na economia, devendo assumir o comando sobre atividades não realizadas por outros agentes econômicos (ampliando a intervenção anticíclica keynesiana), tarefa que requer uma capacidade visionária por parte do Estado, associada a uma intencionalidade de implementação de estratégias, bem como de habilidades burocrático-administrativas (no sentido weberiano) e de conhecimento específico sobre tecnologias e setores.

Cada um deles, ao seu mérito, ainda que as soluções por eles indicadas não representem toda a complexidade do mundo atual, destacam diretrizes neófitas a serem seguidas. Por isso, é de se questionar se o Brasil vem olhando, ainda que minimamente, a doutrina especializada.

The Entrepreneurial State was a concept that was put forth by Mariana Mazzucato in 2013. Since then, the concept has not received as much attention as it should, as the traditional view regarding entrepreneurship still holds sway among many academicians. This paper revisits this concept with an overview of Mazzucato’s main thesis, followed by a critique. Some lessons regarding the concept from the Malaysian perspective are shared. Mazzucato’s thesis regarding government intervention in the entrepreneurship process deserves greater attention, especially in light of the developments surrounding Covid-19. Further research areas are highlighted in the concluding remarks of this paper.

A ideia desenvolvida por ela pode facilmente ser adotada no Brasil, e as razões para isso podem ser vislumbradas nesse ensaio que se propôs a trazer uma abordagem inicial da necessidade de uma postura arrojada do governo brasileiro no desenvolvimento nacional em meio ao cenário de crise atual.
