Abstract:
SUMMARY Teratomas constitute a group of nongerminomatous germ cell tumors that are composed of an admixture of different tissue types representative of ectoderm, endoderm and mesoderm. Intracranial teratomas are rare, comprising approximately 0.5% of all intracranial tumors. They preferentially involve the midline structures, and occur primarily in children. We presented an unusual case of mature intracranial teratoma with extracranial extension in a 24-year-old man who complained of headache, nausea and vomiting. The intracranial expansive lesion was localized in the left frontotemporobasal region extending into the ipsilateral orbit. The patient underwent total resection of the tumor. No adjuvant treatment was given. On gross examination, the resected tumor was lobulated, containing heterogeneous solid and cystic components. Histologic investigation revealed the presence of various fully differentiated tissues representative of the three germ cell layers, including adipose tissue, cartilage, bone, striated muscle bundles, brain tissue, respiratory epithelium and glandular structures. The diagnosis of mature teratoma was established. Follow-up at four years did not show any evidence of recurrence. The presented case is an unusual example of mature teratoma with regards to the age of the patient and, especially, to the location of the tumor, both intraand extracranially. It is critical to recognize this rare entity by extensive sampling to rule out the presence of immature elements which may constitute only a minor part of the tumor.

Unwin, M. J., M. T. Kinnison, and T. P. Quinn. "Exceptions to semelparity: postmaturation survival, morphology, and energetics of male chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha)." Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences 56, no. 7 (July 1, 1999): 1172–81. http://dx.doi.org/10.1139/f99-045.

Full text
Abstract:
Between 2.1 and 6.8% of fall-run male chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) reared in two New Zealand hatcheries matured as yearling parr, of similar size to immature siblings. The incidence of mature parr in 58 half-sib families ranged from 0 to 69% of the available males. Although chinook salmon are normally semelparous, about 80% of mature parr survived to mature again at age 2, and all fish held for another year matured again at age 3. All three ages produced milt that successfully fertilized eggs. Morphological development in mature parr and repeat-maturing males was consistent with that of older, first time maturing males. The gonadosomatic index for mature age-2 males was 11.7, 7.2, and 5.4% for repeat-maturing males, freshwater-reared males, and sea-run males, respectively. Muscle energy density for repeat-maturing males (4.45 kJ/g) was lower than for normal males (5.20-5.45 kJ/g) and negatively correlated with the gonadosomatic index. Although we think it unlikely that repeat maturation occurs regularly in the wild, our results indicate that under favorable conditions, chinook salmon can exhibit some iteroparous traits. We hypothesize an evolutionary continuum between semelparity and iteroparity in salmonids, primarily characterized by modifications in a few key energetic and physiological thresholds.

Abstract:
Three hurricanes in Florida starting in late Summer 2004 caused severe leaf loss, which stimulated many fall shoots. Flush occurred after each hurricane and by December, shoots were 6- to 12-weeks-old when cool temperatures capable of causing flower bud induction started. To evaluate the potential for these flushes to mature buds that could be induced to flower, flushes that were stimulated on potted trees in a greenhouse were allowed to mature 4, 6, 8, or 10 weeks before moving trees to flower-inducing conditions for 6 weeks (15 °C day/10 °C night). Plants were then returned to the greenhouse, which was kept at 20 °C or higher (ambient), until buds sprouted. Only 1% of sprouting buds on shoots that matured for 4 weeks had flowers. In shoots that matured for 6 weeks, 18% of sprouting buds had flowers. After 8 weeks of growth, 57% of the buds that sprouted were flower buds, while after allowing 10 weeks for shoots to mature, induction resulted in 76% of the sprouting buds producing flowers. Consequently, 8 weeks of development were necessary for citrus shoots to develop mostly mature buds that responded to flower inductive conditions. This is about the same amount of time required for new citrus leaves to fully mature.

Abstract:
In the present study, a combination of physicochemical maturity indices parameters of mango fruit was continuously measured from full bloom stage. Three different harvesting stages were-immature (100th days from full bloom), mature (110th days from full bloom) and over mature (120th days from full bloom) stages. Thereafter, the shelf life and quality attributes of mango fruit were assessed by storing the fruit at optimum storage temperature (12 °C) and ambient storage temperature (27 °C). It was observed that the mango harvested at mature condition could be stored up to 22 days and 6 days, at 12 °C and 27 °C, respectively. The quality attributes like total soluble solids, titratable acidity, physiological weight loss, firmness and puncture strength of matured mango stored at optimum temperature were 22.45 °Brix, 0.32, 9.86%, 41.98 and 14.41 N, respectively at the end of the storage period. These were higher when compared to the values obtained for the over-matured mango, for the same parameters. This affirmed that harvesting over mature or immature fruits might again results into their lower market value and lesser acceptability among the consumers.
