Abstract:
The normal placentas, regular pregnancies and deliveries were structurally examined. The aim of this research was to compare the results and to confirm if there were some difference in the structure of placenta related to the age of pregnant women. We examined 30 human placentas. The examined group of women were divided into two groups: 1) pregnant women 20-35 years old; 2) pregnant women over 35 years old. The stereological method was used. The volume density, absolute volume, the surface density and absolute surface of terminal villi of placentas in younger and older pregnant women were not significantly different. The volume density, absolute volume, the surface density and absolute surface of the other placentas villi in younger pregnant women compared to older ones, were significantly increased (p<0.001). The volume density of fibrinoid of placentas in older pregnant women compared to younger ones was significantly increased (p<0.02). The surface density, absolute volume and absolute surface of fibrinoid in these two examined groups of pregnant women were not significantly different. The volume density of intervillous space of placentas in older pregnant women compared to younger ones was significantly increased (p<0.05). Absolute volumes of intervillous space of placentas in these two examined groups of pregnant women are not significantly different.

Abstract:
The research described in this dissertation begins from the problem of how best to provide a bridging program required to meet the needs of a small group of working class, mature-age and teenage parenting women who wish to re-enter local high schools. In doing so it seeks to determine a literacy pedagogy, appropriate support structures and thematic base for the program. The study design has four main components: conceptualising and developing the bridgingprogram, evaluating its implementation and extracting recommendations. Conceptualising the program involved obtaining information from the women themselves, developing a theoretical base from which to interpret this information and designing an appropriate classroom based bridging program. These aspects are described in chapters two and three. The bridging program was then implemented over a ten week period, using the resultant pedagogical and support structures developed through the research process. The structure of the implementation is reported in chapter four. This is then followed in chapter five by the preliminary evaluation of the program as to whether it has met the needs of the participants and was able to circumvent potential barriers in the light of the theorising and research engaged in above. On the basis of this study it is recommended that similar bridging programs designed for adult re-entry be implemented on an annual basis. In doing so, some aspects of the pedagogy and support structures developed within this pilot bridging program should be modified for future use. It is also recommended that some elements of the pedagogy and support structures be incorporated in the mainstream school.

In recent years, advances in medicine have increased life expectancy and quality of life for people over 55. They feel much younger than their actual age and engage in activities that would have been unimaginable a decade ago. In the case of mature women, interest in fashion has also increased significantly. This study aims at investigating the relationship between women’s cognitive age and their emotional responses towards fashion advertising. A survey with 164 women aged 55 to 70 evidenced that mature women´s self-perception is in accordance with their cognitive age and that they identify themselves mostly with photographic models of their own age. In doing so, their positive attitude towards clothes shown by an advertisement also increases. This knowledge could be used by the marketing sector so as to direct more effective publicity campaigns to the market of mature women.

In today's social environment where age structure, life course structure and marriage culture are gradually changing, the past view of middle-aged women is no longer appropriate. The purpose of this study is to explore the connotation of life experiences of middle-aged women in Taiwan today, and to explore the life course of middle-aged women through interviews, such as: changes in the relationship with others, changes in their own moods. Through words that women talk about their life experience, we hope we can reveal the situatedness of middle-aged women. The phenomenological research method used in this study is the hermeneutical phenomenology analysis developed by Wei-Lun Lee (2004a) on the situatedness of a person. Three middle-aged(age betweem 45 to 60 ) and have kids women that were interviewed for this study. The results showed six discourses that summed from these women’ s descriptions : (1) about "I am no longer what I used to be" premarital life; (2) about " women should played as family caregivers"; (3) about "work life and its extension"; (4) about "the reduce/loose of the burden of caregivers"; (5) about " physical health in middle-age" and (6) about " refreshing mature age ". Under the intertwining of these six discourses, the universal situatedness of Taiwanese middle-aged women can be described as: living in a state of downward care and loosening, looking back at the life as a caregiver, reflecting on the role of the caregiver continuation or not, there is also a future-oriented, refresh life discussion. This study also shows that middle-aged women are in this position, facing the intertwined interactions of the above several discourses, and the contradictions and dilemmas that may be experienced. Through the revealing of this research, the possible space for women to speak and understand their own experiences has been opened, and a new perspective and discussion on the life experience of middle-aged women has been given. In addition, this study takes Taiwanese middle-aged women as an example, revealing the new possibility of aging/mature age, that is, the possibility of refreshing life.

Abstract:

Adult women who return to study after a period of absence have a particular set of problems, some of which present as barriers to the successful achievement of their academic goals. The aim of the present study was to identify the barriers which mature-aged women faced who were enrolled in a course of study at a metropolitan secondary college. The literature on this topic identified some barriers which were supported by the present study, but in addition, several barriers were unique to the situation at The College. Using educational ethnography as a methodology, the researcher used a questionnaire followed by interviews and a focus group discussion to identify the barriers the women were facing. Results indicated that in addition to expected barriers such as conflict between study and family responsibilities, feelings of poor self-worth, a lack of information and social class, women at The College also found that work commitments, time management, different teaching methods used by some teachers, the level of difficulty of some subjects, assessment policies, and younger students in the same class, also presented as barriers to their success. The results of this study provide new information, concerning barriers to further education for the adult female student. These new barriers have implications for further research.

Abstract:
Children born with congenital heart disease no longer face the prospect of early death and a poor quality of life. In fact, most neonates with moderate to complex congenital heart disease have a survival rate to adulthood of over 80%. The ratio of adults to children with congenital heart disease is increasing, due to better surgical repairs, and longer survival with a better quality of life. In the Western world, there are more adults than children alive with congenital heart disease. This remarkable medical effort has allowed young women with congenital heart disease to mature to an age where they wish to have babies of their own. Early generations of women, palliated with Mustard or Senning repairs, have shown it is possible to face the cardiovascular challenges of pregnancy and survive. As the number of women with congenital heart disease is predicted to grow by 25% in the next decade and more women with congenital heart disease become pregnant; a better understanding of moderate to complex heart disease, different surgical repair procedures, and residual anomalies is paramount. This chapter examines the management of parturients with transposition complexes (both classical and congenitally corrected), tetralogy of Fallot, the Fontan circulation, Eisenmenger’s syndrome, and congenital aortic stenosis, taking into consideration the effect of pregnancy, labour, delivery, and anaesthesia on each circulation.

Abstract:
AbstractThroughout history, culture shapes our actions regarding biological health. Myths of youthfulness and vitality, as well as hope, courage, and willpower, give the ponytail a democratic half-life. Human hair grows fastest in healthy youth and during recovery from illness, and slows in old age, and during illness, pregnancy, and cold weather; therefore, it is no wonder that observations of hair shape cultural constructions of health. I show that the ponytail’s performativity of youthfulness energizes females of all ages in democracies. For example, ponytailed girls participate at summer camps and sport tournaments that promote gender equality and multiculturalism. Adult women with ponytails retain their youthfulness. They move as soft as sap and with a feminist vigor. Some are right-wing politicians professing neoliberal equalities; others speak out for social democratic justice. The ponytail’s youthful half-life provides vitality when modern women steadily enter new domains and challenge old conventions. So powerful is its iconic charge that it not only gives youthfulness to elderly women, but retains the democratic vitality these women sported as young, mature, and now aging feminists. For the ponytail to remain iconic, it must offer us leeway to maneuver and oscillate between existential hopes and fears of health.

Abstract:
Çatalhöyük is most well known for its Neolithic settlement, but the site also served as a cemetery during the Bronze Age, as well as the Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic periods. During the Neolithic, Çatalhöyük is distinctive as a place for both the living and the dead, but thereafter the site becomes more closely associated with the dead. This chapter discusses four examples of non-normative burials from different time periods at the site, including two Neolithic burials: one of a mature male buried with a sheep and another of a young male with a congenital deformity; a Roman period double burial with an atypical grave orientation; and an isolated twentieth-century burial of a woman from the local village, which represents the last known burial on the mound. Osteobiographical information and sociocultural context are used to assess the significance of each burial. We also question how normative and non-normative burials are typically defined in the archaeological record.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explains that never had there been such fierce competition between the two sides of Margaret Walker’s self than after her return from Iowa: the writer committed to a public art, and the wife and mother on whom her family was almost entirely dependent. The tension between duty and desire was the constant driving force in her life, feeding her creative energies. As she grew older with increased responsibilities, any reconciliation of her separate spheres through her art was harder to achieve. The chapter then looks at Margaret Walker’s Jubilee. Although the novel began as the coming-of-age story of a young girl enslaved from birth, she gave more focus to her interior life as a mature woman, mother, and wife against the backdrop of slavery’s demise, the birth of a free Black community in the South, and the choices that people made, choices that were neither easy nor always clear. Jubilee, as an analogue for historically situated slavery-to-freedom-and-after encounters, verified through painstaking research, defies sentimentality, even with its love triangle.

Abstract:
A shared interest in the practice of colonization as a form of predation and capture provides a surprising link between Edward Gibbon Wakefield’s writings about systematic colonization and Charlotte Brontë’s whimsical juvenile writings. Both present their ideas in fictional form, and their colonies as imaginative constructs. Wakefield’s theory, which was influential in shaping British colonial policy, involved transporting working-class families to Australia to establish a labour force within new settlements. To reinforce the difference between his scheme and that of chattel slavery, he emphasized the freedom of his workers. Yet his scheme entailed significant restraints of their personal liberties: their freedom of movement, association, and right to own property, as well as the requirement to marry and have children. Similar preoccupations are evident in an earlier episode in Wakefield’s biography, in which he kidnapped a young woman in order to marry her for her family’s wealth and prestige. Brontë, who was roughly the same age as Wakefield’s young victim, explores these themes explicitly in her own teenage accounts of a colony in Africa, Glass Town. Co-authored with her siblings, this intricate saga of conquest and settlement by a group of European explorers presents a juvenile commentary on contemporary colonial practices. It reveals the coercive violence within the colony, as well as the submerged erotic elements within it. It also shows the ways this same violence underpins fictional narratives, especially the marriage plots that Brontë develops in her mature works.

Abstract:
The article describes the results of the empirical study into sociodemographic correlates and subjective correlates of happiness. The relevance of the study is determined by the fact that the modern world places exorbitant, often conflicting requirements (information-driven, need and motive-based, value-oriented, etc.) on the individual. Our study aimed to define the linkage between the happiness of mature Russians and their satisfaction with different aspects of life. We formed the hypothesis of a connection between happiness and satisfaction with the job, material situation, health, proper rest, inter-spousal relations, and relationships with their children and friends. The results revealed that the feelings of happiness are connected with both objective socio-demographic indicators and the level of satisfaction with different life aspects. Happiness positively correlates with the number of children in a family and income, and also with overall life satisfaction. With age, a subjective sense of happiness “fades” a bit, and the respondents estimate happiness slightly lower (it is more characteristic of the female part of the sample). Men and women do not differ in the level of being happy but there exist some peculiarities in the linkage of happiness with such factors as marital status (being married) and the number of children – unlike men, for women these correlations are statistically significant. Also, men, compared to women, are more satisfied with the material situation and inter-spousal relations and less satisfied with their relations with friends. In general, the obtained results complement the data published in academic literature. Thus, it was found that not all factors considered as predictors of happiness in the public mind correlate with the feelings of happiness. For instance, it was revealed that such an essential factor of material wellbeing as homeownership has nothing to do with a sense of happiness: the respondents with and without own homes are equally happy
