Abstract:
Silver nanoparticles are recognized for numerous physical, biological and pharmaceutical applications. In this study, silver nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by green chemistry alternative reduction method, using Matico (Piper aduncum) leaves extract. The characterization was performed through Ultraviolet/VisibleSpectroscopy to estimatethe particle size; morphology and elemental composition were detected by Scanning Electron Microscopy. Estimated radius was measured by Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy. The interaction between Matico leaves extract with nanoparticles to determine potential reducing active ingredients was monitored by InfraredSpectroscopy. The reaction yield was determined by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. The interaction of clusters of silver nanoparticles (3, 5 and 6 atoms) with quercetin (an active molecule of Molecular Dynamics by Gaussian09 and Abalone programs. The particle size was 13.58±6.25nm. It was found that the nanoparticles are quasi-spherical with 7.2 % of elemental silver and a reaction yield of 96.68 %. The cluster of 6 silver atoms with quercetin was proven to be the most stable complex. Synthesized silver nanoparticles display stability greater than 120 days, confirming that Matico leaves extract is a viable and green reducing agent.Silver nanoparticles would have very good clearance properties because molecular dynamics demonstrated that over a certain period of time, the silver cluster got far away from the quercetin.

Abstract:
High resolution electron microscopy provides a powerful method for studying controlled dynamic reaction sequences and the development of microstructures on the atomic scale. Temperatures can be controlled with reasonable accuracy using a standard hot-stage, but at elevated temperatures there is some reduction in the contrast, and stability, of images. It is, of course, essential to minimise the effects, including additional heating, of irradiating the sample with a high voltage electron beam in a high vacuum environment, and to take into account the close proximity of two specimen surfaces in designing experiments. TV imaging techniques, in-situ, relocatable ex-situ and environmental methods are being developed for use with two medium voltage side-entry high resolution TEMs, equipped with complementary chemical and structural microanalytical STEM facilities.TV imaging techniques Dynamic reaction sequences are now mostly viewed with a low-light level TV camera (LLTV) using a thin YAG or YAP pickup screen and recorded on U-matic videotape to facilitate subsequent processing. The results can be improved substantially by using a digital framestore based image processor to enhance the signal to noise ratio of the video signal in realtime. A major element in the SNR is the shot noise statistics of the TEM electron beam.

Abstract:

Cassava mealybug, Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae): Geographic distribution in Java and initiation of biological control. Cassava mealybug, Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero (Hemiptera: Psedococcidae), is a recently introduced pest in Indonesia. Parasitoid Anagyrus lopezi (De Santis) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) was imported to control the pest. Studies were conducted to determine geographic distribution of P. manihoti throughout Java, and to evaluate the potential of the parasitoid as a biological control agent. Geographic distribution of the pest was determined through field survey, whereas evaluation of the parasitoid was studied through cage experiment and field release. Our survey revealed that the cassava mealybug has spread throughout Java. Heavy infestations caused shortened and distorted stems, complete defoliation, and stunted growth. In cages containing only mealybugs, all cassava plants (100%) died after two months. Whereas in cages containing both mealybugs and three pairs of parasitoid, rate of parasitization was 25% and plant mortality 20%. Parasitoids released in the field were able to survive, reproduce, and establish under Bogor climatic condition. These might indicate that parasitoid A. lopezi is a potential natural enemy to be used in biological control program of the cassava mealybug.

Abstract:
Neutrino oscillations, the baryon asymmetry and dark matter are important evidences of new physics beyond the Standard Model. Neutrino oscillations imply neutrino masses and a lepton mixing matrix that can contribute to flavour violating processes and CP violation at low energies, accessible to next experiments, and to the CP violation necessary for baryogenesis. Among the most interesting implications, is flavour violation in the lepton sector, but it has only been observed in neutrino oscillations. By analogy with quarks, it is then possible to deduce a principle of minimal flavour violation for leptons. Since such formulation is not straightforward in the lepton sector, we discuss dierent possibilities. Then we propose a definition which could be applied to various models and could help us in selecting between the possible neutrino mass generating mechanisms. Furthermore, if the seesaw mechanism describes neutrino masses, we can have a natural explanation to the baryon asymmetry of the universe with leptogenesis. In the context of leptogenesis including flavour effects, we demonstrate that the baryon asymmetry of the universe is insensitive to the low energy CP violating phases. This study is performed in the minimal extension of the Standard Model, with the introduction of 3 right-handed neutrinos and type-1 seesaw, only, and it is extended, in a following study, to the supersymmetric case. Since the seesaw parameter space is quite large, the numerical study is developed with the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. In relation to dark matter, we study a scenario with very weakly coupled candidates and their production through the decay of a charged long-lived scalar particle. We compute the scalar particle number density, evaluating its gauge interactions, and compare it with Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis bounds. Then, we apply our results to the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model scenario with axino or gravitino as Lightest Supersymmetric Particle and stau or stop as Next to Lightest Supersymmetric Particle.

Thomas, Andrew G. "On the plasticity of human mating strategies : experimental evidence for mating strategy change in response to evolutionarily relevant stimuli." Thesis, Swansea University, 2015. https://cronfa.swan.ac.uk/Record/cronfa41184.

Full text
Abstract:
Evolutionary psychological theory explains the large variance found in humanmating behaviour through the use of a mating strategies perspective. Specifically, both sexes have short-term and long-term mating strategies containing sets of evolved psychological adaptations which guide mating effort. Individuals vary in their mating behaviour due to the differential activation of these two strategies which are thought to be activated conditionally. That is, an individual is hypothesized to engage in a short- term mating strategy over a long-term one in circumstances where, ancestrally, a short- term strategy would have led to the best fitness outcome. Despite a large body of evidence for the existence of mating strategies in humans, evidence for the ability to conditionally switch between strategies is less robust. To date, such evidence is either in the form of correlational studies, or experimental studies which demonstrate changes to behaviours only partly related to mating strategies. The aim of this thesis was to fill the gap in this literature by demonstrating that participants can change their mating strategies in response to evolutionarily relevant stimuli. A novel measure of mating strategies was developed in order to capture a participants’ propensity towards short- and long-term mating before and after exposure to cues hypothesized to have affected the effectiveness of the two mating strategies in the ancestral environment. These included cues related to a skewed local sex-ratio, self-perceived dominance, and environmental danger. Of the ten experimental hypotheses tested, support (or partial support) was found for seven and the experimental effects were typically small-to-medium in size. Thus, moderate support was found that humans are flexible in their mating strategy implementation and respond to evolutionarily relevant cues, although it was concluded that marked changes in an individual’s environment would be required for any lasting effect on their matingbehaviour to occur.

Abstract:
Modelling crowd motion is central to situations as diverse as risk prevention in mass events and visual effects rendering in the motion picture industry. The difficulty to perform quantitative measurements in model experiments, and the lack of reference experimental system, have however strongly limited our ability to model and control pedestrian flows. The aim of this thesis is to strengthen our understanding of human crowds, following two distinct approaches.First, we designed a numerical model to study the lane formation process among bidirectional flows of motile particles. We first evidenced the existence of two distinct phases: one fully laned and one homogeneously mixed, separated by a critical phase transition, unique to active systems. We then showed with a hydrodynamic approach that the mixed phase is algebraically correlated in the direction of the flow. We elucidated the origin of these strong correlations and proved that they were a universal feature of any system of oppositely moving particles, active of passive.Second, we conducted a substantial experimental campaign to establish a model experiment of human crowds. For that purpose we performed systematic measurements on crowds composed of tens of thousands of road-race participants in start corrals, a geometrically simple setup. We established that speed information propagates through polarized crowds over system spanning scales, while orientational information is lost in a few seconds. Building on these observations, we laid out a hydrodynamic theory of polarized crowds and demonstrated its predictive power

Abstract:

Abstract:
Searching for reaction in organic synthesis has been made much easier in the current age of computer databases. However, the dilemma now is which procedure one selects among the ocean of choices. Especially for novices in the laboratory, it becomes a daunting task to decide what reaction conditions to experiment with first in order to have the best chance of success. This collection intends to serve as an "older and wiser lab-mate" one could have by compiling many of the most commonly used experimental procedures in organic synthesis. With chapters that cover such topics as functional group manipulations, oxidation, reduction, and carbon-carbon bond formation, Modern Organic Synthesis in the Laboratory will be useful for both graduate students and professors in organic chemistry and medicinal chemists in the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries.

Abstract:
When the full pedigree of individuals whose values (records) were used in the selection decisions during an experiment (or breeding program) is known, LS analysis can be replaced by mixed models and their Bayesian extensions. In this setting, REML can be used to estimate genetic variances and BLUP can be used to estimate the mean breeding value in any given generation. The latter allows for genetic trends to be separated from environmental trends without the need for a control population. Under the infinitesimal model setting (wherein selection-induced allele-frequency changes are small during the course of the experiment), the use of the relationship matrix in a BLUP analysis accounts for drift, nonrandom mating, and linkage disequilibrium.

Abstract:
Vocants are precursors to speech and are facially neutral. The presence of these speechlike vocalizations was evident during the precursors to mature phonology called “protophones”. The prosodic feature of duration of the nuclei plays a crucial role in the shift of prelexical to mature speech, since speech intelligibility is closely related to the control of duration. The aim of this work is to determine whether cochlear implants (CIs) positively trigger language acquisition and the development of verbal skills. Recent literature findings are compared and discussed with the performance of two Greek congenitally hearing-impaired infants who were matched with three normal-hearing (NH) infants. This work highlighted an important weakness of the prosodic abilities of young infants with CIs.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Water-alternating-gas (WAG) injection, both miscible and immiscible, is a widely used enhanced oil recovery method with over 80 field cases. Despite its prevalence, the numerical modeling of the physical processes involved remains poorly understood, and existing models often lack predictability. Part of the complexity stems from the component exchange between gas and oil and the hysteretic relative permeability effects. Thus, improving the reliability of numerical models requires the calibration of the equation of state (EOS) against phase behavior data from swelling/extraction and slim-tube tests, and the calibration of the three-phase relative permeability model against WAG coreflood experiments. This paper presents the results and interpretation of a complete set of two-phase and thee-phase displacement experiments on mixed-wet carbonate rocks. The three-phase WAG experiments were conducted on the same composite core at near-miscible reservoir condition; experiments differ in the injection order and length of their injection cycles. First, the two-phase water/oil and gas/oil displacement experiments and first cycles of WAG were used to estimate the two-phase relative permeabilities. Then, a synchronized history-matching procedure over the full set of WAG experiments and cycles was carried out to tune Larsen ans Skauge WAG hysteresis model—namely the Land gas traping parameter, the gas reduction exponent, the residual oil reduction factor and three-phase water relative permeability. The second part of this paper deals with the multiphase upscaling of microscopic displacement properties from plug to coarse grid reservoir scale. The two-phase relative permeability curves and three-phase WAG parameters were upscaled using a sector model to preserve the displacement process and reservoir performance. The result of the coreflood calibration indicate that the two-phase displacement and first cycles of WAG yield a consistent set of two-phase relative permeabilities. Including the full set of WAG experiments allowed a robust calibration of the hysteresis model.

Moores, Lee, Stacy Jones, Garrett George, David Henderson, and Timothy Schutt. Photo degradation kinetics of insensitive munitions constituents nitroguanidine, nitrotriazolone, and dinitroanisole in natural waters. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), September 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/41900.

Full text
Abstract:
Herein the matrix effects on the kinetics of aqueous photolysis for the individual munitions constituents of IMX-101: nitroguanidine (NQ), dinitroanisole (DNAN), and nitrotriazolone (NTO) are reported along with the environmentally relevant kinetics and quantum yields. Photolysis potentially represents a major degradation pathway for these munitions in the environment and further understanding the complex matrices effects on photolytic kinetics was needed. Aqueous systems are of particular interest due to the high solubility of NQ (3,800 ppm) and NTO (16,642 ppm) compared to the traditional munitions trinitrotoluene (TNT, 100.5 ppm) and 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX, 59.9 ppm). Environmental half-lives (and quantum yields) were found to be 0.44 days, 0.83 days, and 4.4 days for NQ, DNAN, and NTO, respectively, under natural sunlight. In laboratory experiments using nominally 300 nm bulbs in a merry-go-round style reactor in DI water the relative rate of photolysis for the three munitions constituents followed the same order NQ > DNAN > NTO, where DNAN and NTO reacted 57 and 115 times more slowly, respectively, than NQ. In the various environmentally relevant matrices tested in the laboratory experiments NQ was not significantly affected, DNAN showed a faster degradation with increasing ionic strength, and NTO showed a modest salinity and pH dependence on its rate of photolysis.

Saillant, Eric, Jason Lemus, and James Franks. Culture of Lobotes surinamensis (Tripletail). Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, January 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.18785/ose.001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Tripletail, Lobotes surinamensis, is a pelagic fish found in tropical and sub-tropical waters of all oceans. Tripletails are often associated with floating debris and make frequent incursions in bays and estuaries where they are targeted by recreational fishermen. In Mississippi waters the species is typically present during the late spring and summer season that also correspond to the period of sexual maturation and spawning (Brown-Peterson and Franks 2001). Tripletail is appreciated as a gamefish but is also prized for its flesh of superior quality. The fast growth rate of juveniles in captivity documented by Franks et al. (2001) and the excellent quality of Tripletail flesh both contribute to the potential of this species for marine aquaculture. In addition, the production of cultured juveniles would be precious to develop a better understanding of the biology, early life history and habitat use of Tripletail larvae and juveniles, a topic largely undocumented to date, through experimental releases and controlled studies. The culture of tripletail thus supports the Tidelands Trust Fund Program through improved conservation of natural resources, potential enhancement of fisheries productivity and potential development of a new economic activity on the Gulf coast producing tripletail via aquaculture. The Objective of this project was to initiate development of methods and techniques needed to spawn captive held tripletail broodfish and raise their offspring to evaluate their growth and development in captivity. In this report we will present the results of studies aiming to develop methods and protocols for captive spawning of tripletail and the first data obtained on the early development of tripletail larvae. A major issue that was encountered with tripletail broodstock development during the project lied in the difficulties associated with identifying the sex of adults caught in the wild and candidates for being incorporated in mating sets for spawning. This issue was addressed during the course of the project by examining the potential of a non-lethal method of hormonal sexing. The results of these preliminary investigations are presented in the third part of this report. All protocols used in the project were determined with the guidance of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) of the University of Southern Mississippi (USM IACUC protocol number 10100108).

CAE Correlation of Sealing Pressure of a Press-in-Place Gasket. SAE Imposter, April 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.4271/2021-01-0299.

Full text
Abstract:
The Press-in-Place (PIP) gasket is a static face seal with self-retaining feature, which is used for the mating surfaces of engine components to maintain the reliability of the closed system under various operating conditions. Its design allows it to provide enough contact pressure to seal the internal fluid as well as prevent mechanical failures. Insufficient sealing pressure will lead to fluid leakage, consequently resulting in engine failures. A test fixture was designed to simulate the clamp load and internal pressure condition on a gasket bolted joint. A Sensor pad using TEKSCAN equipment was used to capture the overall and local pressure distribution of the PIP gasket under various engine loading conditions. Then, the Sensor pad test results were compared with simulated CAE results from computer models. Through the comparisons, it is found that the gasket sealing pressure of test data and CAE data show good correlation for bolt load condition 500N when compared to internal pressure side load condition of 0.138 MPa & 0.276 MPa. Moreover, the gasket cross-sectional pressure distribution obtained by experimental tests and CAE models correlated very well with R2 ranging from 90 to 99% for all load cases. Both CAE and Sensor pad test results shows increase in sealing pressure when internal side pressure is applied to the gasket seal.
