Full textIn 1974 the WHO warns about the global decrease of breastfeeding and the disastrous consequences of this fact on neonatal health. A set of measures are taken in order to promote breastfeeding institutionally, as it is considered a public health issue. At the same time, several supporting groups composed of breastfeeding mothers are created from the civil society. Currently, in spite of the fact that breastfeeding indexes have risen, many breastfeeding mothers still receive critiques or pressures from certain health care practitioners, the family group or their social environment. These critiques grow as their breastfeeding is extended in time. My research is based in analysing the critiques that these mothers receive and the discourses that they build regarding their bodily practices. The research methodology is qualitative based on in-depth interviews to breastfeeding mothers and on participant observation in support groups. The main conclusions about the critiques to breastfeeding are that they are centred in four axes: the maternal-filial dependency, the fact of “spoiling” the child, the obscenity of showing breasts in public and the accusation of being “neo-sexist”. These points reveal an individualistic symbolic order that vertebrates post-modernity and a specific social control based on the use of the bodies and of bodily fluids. The breastfeeding mothers, on their side, normally legitimise their actions with discourses that use biological approaches, where following their “instinct” is presented as an impulse for agency and individual decision-making processes.

Maternity is regarded as a woman's "duty" and depicts women as the best candidates in raising children and assuming the role of undertaking tasks such as long-term housework and childcare. The mother should be secular "in accord with the innate maternal instinct" to meet the needs of their children. However motherhood is not always a totally positive experience and there can be negative emotions and experiences also. As a woman and mother myself, I try to look upon “maternal instinct” from different points of view from my own life experiences to these three relatively missions: (1) Mother: motherhood yoke. (2) livelihood: to teach that all genders are equal, and breaking traditional impression. (3) Creation: female femininity brewing motherhood painting. My way to highlight motherhood is deeply rooted in patriarchal tasks, through dreams as a catalyst in digesting the reality of experience, the beauty of life reproduction, the subconscious and the purest imagery. I would create a series of works to complete the creation of four themes: "a state of existence without me" to explore motherhood and women's opposition; "good mother myth" to expose the complexity of the experience of motherhood and the idea that pain and pleasure can coexist; "suspect opened the senses confused "conscious motherhood and women's dialectic;" the possibility of self-actualization", reflections of motherhood and women's choices - trying to figure out motherhood for women's positioning and value, from the reconstruction of self-understanding.
