Abstract:
Motivation for using corpus linguistics in English language teaching is partly related to the inconsistencies found between the use of lexical items and grammatical structures in the corpora and those in traditional language textbooks that are often largely based on the personal judgments of the materials writers. This lack of fit between the language in the textbook and authentic language use has been reported in many studies; yet, an overview of this aspect has not been carried out. The purpose of this study is twofold: 1) to discuss the importance of corpus linguistics for the development of English language teaching materials, and 2) to present a survey of studies carried out in the last ten years, with particular reference to the mismatches found between the language in various corpora such as Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English (LSWE) and British National Corpus (BNC) and that used in Finnish EFL textbooks, Malaysian ESL textbooks and Hong Kong secondary textbooks to name a few. The implication of this study is to provide L2 teachers with useful information about pedagogical corpus and the ways in which they can make optimal use of a textbook’s strong points, recognizing the shortcomings of certain exercises, tasks, or entire texts and to show how they can improve the textbook and adapt their teaching materials accordingly.

Abstract:
The research aimed to assess the readability of reading material in two different English textbooks published by different publishers. Many pieces of research have been conducted to examine the reading materials in English textbooks, and it had been discovered that the reading materials were insufficiently adequate for the levels of students. The research applied a descriptive content analysis method to analyze, interpret, and describe the data. The Flesch Reading Ease formula was as an instrument. The research’s data were derived from the English textbook “Pathway to English” by Erlangga grade X and the English textbook “Bahasa Inggris” by The Ministry of Education and Culture grade X. Based on the findings of the research, five reading texts out of 15 match with students’ level (fairly difficult level) of grade X in the first textbook, while three texts out of 13 equal with students’ level (fairly difficult level) of grade X in the second textbook. Furthermore, the first textbook’s average readability score indicates that the texts are ‘standard’, whereas the second textbook indicates that the texts are ‘fairly difficult’. Based on the study findings, some recommendations for teachers are to use the readability formulas to provide appropriate reading material for students, as well as for other researchers to conduct a larger context about readability.

Abstract:
The use of EFL published materials like textbooks are becoming more widespread as they can bring easiness in the classroom by providing teachers with guidelines comprised of syllabus, methodologies, as well as materials for teaching and learning. However, choosing a suitable textbook for their teaching situation is deemed to be one of the most challenging tasks that EFL teachers often face. To get a good picture of the suitability of a textbook, a careful investigation needs to be undertaken. This study focused on the analysis and evaluation of two different English textbooks addressed to junior high schools grade VII in Indonesia, KTSP and curriculum 2013 textbook. Harmer’s (2007) framework was employed to figure out the strengths and weaknesses of each textbook. The analysis revealed that both textbooks are quite satisfactory as they are very affordable, contain interesting layout, attractive designs, and clear instructions, correspond to current ELT methodology, cover all language skills, and comprise a wide range of topics which are familiar and culturally appropriate for learners. Nonetheless, the KTSP textbook does not have add-ons and extra materials; meanwhile, curriculum 2013 textbook is weak in providing authentic listening materials. Therefore, although the teachers manage to use the textbooks as their core materials, they are supposed to make adjustment and supplement them with other materials according to their learners’ needs and their teaching context.

Abstract:
The article considers the issue of textbook development in accordance with the reform the New Ukrainian School. It presents the essence of the concepts “textbook development” and “the didactic material” based on the scientific literature. The authors argue that the main task of a school textbook remains unchanged, though the changes occur due to the new functions of a book in modern society development. They compare general criteria for textbooks design in the works of Jan Amos Komensky and the criteria developed in alignment with The New Ukrainian School reform. The teachers today are given the opportunity to choose the textbook, which will help them to best implement the content of primary education. Thus, each teacher in schools with the instruction in the Ukrainian language has a wide range of the Ukrainian language and reading textbooks to choose from (10 textbooks (2018) recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine). The authors of the article focus on the practical aspects of the primary school teachers’ evaluation of the materials selected in the textbooks. In-depth analysis allowed specifying the criteria that teachers should pay attention to in choosing the Ukrainian language and reading textbook for the 1st grade based on the practical aspect of the selected didactic materials. The results of the primary school teachers’ survey on the issue of the didactic material selection are presented. The survey revealed that there is a need for special events (seminars, workshops, webinars etc.) aimed at the development of teachers’ quality skills to analyze the didactic content of the textbooks for their objective evaluation and selection. Abstract:
Abstract Textbooks’ fundamental influence on teaching is caused not only by their subject matter, but also by their didactic elaboration. Textbooks’ individual functions are fulfilled through incorporated structural elements. Their pool is referred to as the didactic equipment of the textbook and represents qualities of the textbook through the options it gives to its users. The presented overview of lower-secondary chemistry textbooks’ didactic equipment included 7 series of currently available textbooks. Results of the analysis serve not only as a possible guide for chemistry teachers’ textbook selection, but they also provide insight into the current state to authors of textbooks and other didactic materials. Chemistry textbooks for lower-secondary schools achieve relatively high didactic equipment (75-92 %). The best equipped are the series of textbooks published after the current state curriculum introduction (by publishing houses Fraus and Nova Skola). Surprisingly, however, the most recently published textbooks by the Taktik publishing house showed the lowest didactic equipment.

Abstract:
This study aims to analyze and evaluate the EFL Textbooks for the eleventh grade of Vocational High School. The entitle of the textbook is Forward, an English Course for Vocational Students. EFL Textbooks have become an essential thing used in foreign language teaching. The textbook is a guide for teachers in carrying out the learning and teaching process in the classroom. The textbook consists of a syllabus, methodology, and supporting materials for teaching in the school. Currently, choosing a textbook is a challenging job for EFL teachers because textbooks must be under the material to be taught in class. To evaluate the content of this textbook, the theory of Harmer has been adopted to research assessing and analyzing the textbook. Researchers want to know the strengths and weaknesses of the textbook. After implementing Harmer's theory, researchers found results that showed that textbooks were satisfactory because they were affordable, contained attractive layouts, attractive designs, and clear instructions. It conforms to the current ELT methodology, covers the four language skills, and comprises a variety of culturally appropriate topics. In addition, it has add-ons, contains additional material, and provides authentic listening material. However, teachers have succeeded in using textbooks as teaching materials and are expected to help teachers meet the learning needs of students in EFL classes.

Abstract:
Textbook materials continue to play an important role in foreign language teaching and learning classroom. Textbooks are significant because these materials are considered elements in the field of foreign language learning. Teachers are often engaged in the application of textbooks for common teaching goals. Although the significance of the application of textbooks is accepted, ideas on whether textbooks could assist or hinder the teaching–learning process seem polarizing. This study employed a Likert scale survey to collect data on the evaluation of Japanese for busy people I: Romanized version (3rd Edition), a Japanese language textbook for new learners. The survey checklist yielded a highly unusual result, that is, all the participants advocated the use of the textbook. This study was conducted in the Greater Boston region in Massachusetts, MA, USA. Upon investigation, over 30 language learning centers, nearly 20 postsecondary institutions, and above 20 secondary schools were determined to be offering Japanese language courses. A total of 49 participants responded to the survey. None of the participants provided negative comments about the textbook. In addition, over 90% of the participants believed that the textbook materials and exercises were organized, contemporary, and applicable.

Abstract:
The problem of creating a new generation textbook and the implementation of the motivational function in primary school textbooks has been substantiated. The motivational function is characterized as a leading one for the textbooks. The recent publications on the discussed issue have been analyzed. The article emphasizes the importance of the textbook analysis techniques for strengthening its motivational function. The technique of the motivational component representation in the Ukrainian language textbooks for the third grade has been described. The textbook analysis has been carried out considering the following components of the motivational function of the primary school textbooks: the emotional content of educational materials, the ways of its didactic organization, the design of the textbooks. Analyzing the content of the textbooks, the author has taken into account the cognitive interests of young learners and the content characteristics of the materials. Considering the cognitive interests of students means that the textbook contains interesting cognitive materials, various literary genres, topics important for third-graders. The analysis of the subject content with the most interesting information for young learners draws attention to the presence of developmental texts (scientific facts in biology, geography, history, ecology, Ukrainian language, etc.) real life situations, facts from today’s reality; local lore materials; folk works; interesting tasks; famous people’s quotations; elements of humor etc. The presence of various literary genres in the textbook (articles, stories, poems, fairy tales, legends, songs, works of small folklore forms, etc.) has been analyzed. Topics significant for third-graders (changes in natural world, history of the local area, human relationships, stories about famous people, scientific travels, discoveries, life abroad, children’s dreams and hobbies, healthy lifestyle etc) have been analyzed. The author also takes into consideration semantic characteristics of the materials (value, accessibility, curiosity, emotionality). The analysis of the ways of didactic organization of educational materials takes into account the availability of practical tasks, didactic games, tasks involving emotional and evaluative activities, developmental tools, interactive teaching methods, the way of presenting the materials. The design of the textbook has been analyzed in terms of keeping to hygienic requirements, aesthetic and didactic criteria of the decoration. The research has contributed to identifying new possible problems that deserve special study, in particular, the problem of application of emotional and artistic materials in textbooks.

Abstract:
In second language teaching, materials play a unique role and the demand of developing language-teaching materials has been increasing. The textbook, an integral part of language-teaching materials, to some extent dominates the contents of teaching and learning and has a deep influence on curriculum. Textbooks for extensive reading apparently highlights this feature while some kind of series adopted in universities have several shortcomings in the representativeness of the articles and their variety of the categories, etc. which makes it hard to play an active role and have a positive impact in teaching and learning process. Some teachers ignore the development of this ability and the significant contribution they can make to evaluating and selecting textbooks. Thus, the author collects basic information from one series of textbooks and analyzes it systematically, and then shows overall comments with detailed suggestions on contents as: selecting more articles from representative writers; increasing articles about history and philosophy; selecting more current articles from magazines; adding more poems and attaching more detailed introductions about the authors and reference books to read. These suggestions will provide some implication for extensive reading textbook evaluation and selection, thereby, the selected textbooks can be at the good service for extensive reading teaching and teachers can get a self-development in the process.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to determine whether or not the listening materials included in the English textbooks used by students in the tenth grade at SMAN 04 Bengkulu City match the requirements outlined in the curriculum that was implemented in 2013. This research is extremely important to the academic world since it will make it much easier for both students and teachers to select a good textbook. A content analysis was utilized in the current investigation. During the data collection process, the researchers utilized two different analysis matrices. The first matrix of analysis consisted of making connections between the listening materials in the textbook and the academic program for 2013. The second analysis matrix presents the percentage score that the English textbook was given in accordance with the standards of the 2013 curriculum. The first matrix illustrates, in accordance with the conclusions of the analysis of the data, that the listening materials contained within the English textbook is compatible with the curricular plan for 2013. In the second matrix, English textbooks are categorized as "good," much like in the first matrix. As a direct result of this, the textbooks published by Private Publications and Erlangga have an average percentage of 92% (Good). In conclusion, the textbooks published by Private Publications/English Erlangga are regarded as "excellent" resources for use in education, both by students and by teachers.

Abstract:
As open textbook initiatives are on the rise, a burgeoning literature has begun exploring student perceptions of openly licensed textbooks used in higher education. Most of this research has lacked consideration of potential differences in the perceptions of online and on-campus students and has failed to include a control group of students using traditional textbooks. Therefore, the authors employed a 2 x 2 design to directly compare perceptions of online students with on-campus students assigned either open or traditional textbooks. Students (N = 925) enrolled in multiple sections of psychology courses at a midsized R1 institution completed a survey on their perceptions of their particular book’s format and features, as well as strategies they typically employ to offset the cost of expensive course materials. The results revealed that online and on-campus students report disparate strategies for offsetting the high costs of textbooks, different preferences in textbook formats (print versus digital versus both) when cost is not a factor, and differences in their ratings of the importance of various textbook features. Moreover, the results indicate that the use of open textbooks may increase preference for free digital textbooks over paid printed textbooks. Based on these results, the authors suggest that campuses might consider providing customized support to different student populations as open textbook initiatives gain in popularity on university campuses. Additionally, they suggest that prior exposure to open textbooks may increase students’ willingness to use openly licensed materials in future courses. They recommend future research on this question, using a longitudinal within-subjects designs.

Abstract:
Office Administration students at VHS require English reading-writing materials to assist them acquiringcompetencies as stated in SKNNI. The present study aimed to evaluate the existing materials and seektheir relevance to SKNNI. The evaluation involved three English textbooks entitled Bahasa InggrisSMA/MA/SMK/MAK for Grade X, XI, and XII through checklist method. The authors used an evaluativechecklist adapted from Cunningsworth (1995) and focused on three aspects — learning objective, language content, and text type. The results show that learning objectives in all assessed textbooksmismatch with the competencies defined in SKKNI. Likewise, language content (grammar andvocabulary) covered in those textbooks is irrelevant with language knowledge needed as the basics toattain the competencies in SKKNI. Then, the textbooks provide the kind of texts which are distinct fromthose required by SKKNI that must be business documents. Although one topic in textbook for GradeXII relates to office administration (about job application), it remains insufficient. To put it simply, thefindings indicate that the three textbooks do not correspond to the national standards, so they areinappropriate for Office Administration students. Therefore, designing reading-writing materials basedon SKNNI is the future action in response to the results of this study.

Abstract:
While discussions of textbook needs have typically focused on undergraduate students, doctoral students face some unique challenges related to course materials. Their positionality as students and also potentially future faculty, researchers, or instructors can provide useful insight as academic libraries seek opportunities to promote open textbooks. This article reports on the results of semi-structured in-depth interviews with 12 doctoral students in the College of Education at the Pennsylvania State University. Findings suggest that they obtain access to required textbooks in different ways and tend to purchase a personal copy of a textbook if they expected to use it in the future for their research. Their course selection was not impacted by the cost of the required textbook, although textbook requirements influenced their perception of the teaching faculty. Some already had experience publishing OER. Some others expressed interest in promoting OER or open access materials, while others expressed skepticism of these initiatives. Many articulated the importance of accessibility. Materials related to older seminal texts, ethnographical works, and methods textbooks were suggested as potential open textbook targets. Implications for academic libraries are discussed.

Existing learning equipped with textbooks is expected to convey the concepts contained in the material. Textbooks are prepared using the REACT approach (Relating, Experiencing, Applying, Cooperating and Transferring). The REACT approach was chosen because the facts that appeared in the field of textbooks that had been compiled had not yet linked daily activities, involved student activities and compiled project tasks. Development of textbooks with Mathematics Applications with REACT approach through stages: a) preliminary analysis, b) preparation of textbooks, c) validation and revision, and d) producing textbook products. In the preliminary analysis process there is a process of reviewing the curriculum and related material, then a textbook is prepared which includes: Learning Objectives, Materials, Learning Activities, Evaluation Tools and completeness of textbooks. Next is the stage of validation and revision, in which there is a validation process by experts and improvement of textbooks according to the results of validation. The final step is the textbook product that has been revised and is ready to be printed. Suggestions for the next researcher are the need to add questions and be equipped with answers related to the contents in the textbook. In addition, it can also be added to the addition of studies on supporting research in each chapter to add student references.

The continuous promotion of e-teaching materials in the international education community prompted the Chinese government to incorporate the use of e-teaching materials in its educational system in 2010. This article introduces the different definitions of e-teaching materials in Chinese and international academia, analyzes the benefits and shortcomings of e-teaching materials by using the 2019 version of the English textbook for high school from The People’s Education Press. The study employs content analysis to provide an in-depth interpretation of how task setting in three textbooks reflects an inclination towards e-teaching materials from four aspects: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Randomly selected units in three textbooks are used to discuss how digital elements contribute to the textbooks and to the emergence of the e-learning trend. Although China’s textbooks are not fully digitalized, a variety of teaching contexts, resources, and content connotations that appear in existing textbooks indicate that e-learning is now an essential element in Chinese English-learning textbooks.

This study explores the representations of the cultural contents in English textbooks used in Indonesian contexts. The textbooks as the sources of data are two textbooks for grade 12 that represent local and global textbook. The first one was Bahasa Inggris, a textbook published and endorsed by Indonesian government and the other one was Think, a global textbook published by Cambridge. This study aims at finding out how different cultural sources are represented in the two textbooks. The findings show that the two textbooks have different emphasis regarding the culture they present in texts and their accompanying visual illustrations. Bahasa Inggris puts the emphasis on global and local cultural sources. Other cultures that are not representative to the two main sources are very limited. On the other hand, Think provides a wide array of representations for global and other cultures but not local Indonesian culture. We end our discussion with a conceptual implication on cultural sources in English language teaching (ELT) materials.

Many Open Educational Resource (OER) and Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) studies explore cost savings, impact on learning outcomes, and student perceptions of the materials. While OER/ZTC research reports positive student perceptions (Brandle et al., 2019), textbook research reports negative student perceptions of digital textbooks (Behnke, 2018). This study explores student buying behavior and perceptions of textbooks, finding that perceptions toward the usefulness of materials is high when access to materials is high. Given this student perception, textbook purchasing is likely related to outside factors. This study adds to the growing body of research about how OER and ZTC may influence student costs and access to course materials, finding that student attitude toward course materials needs to be considered alongside adoption.

Abstract:
It is obvious that the textbooks play a key role in enhancing the quality of teaching and learning. The good quality textbooks must meet the criteria or standard as a textbook. This paper aims to describe the accuracy of materials provided in the Bahasa Indonesia textbook for the first grade of Senior High School curriculum of 2013. This study adopted the content analysis method to analyze the data. The findings deriving from this study reveal that the accuracy of learning material provided in Bahasa Indonesia textbook for the first grade of Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas) curriculum of 2013 published by Erlangga has adequately met the standard requirements of Board of National Education Standards (Badan Standar Nasional Pendidikan, BSNP) for the accuracy of learning material of a textbook. However, this study found some weaknesses in the textbook as follows: (1) The textbook has not provided a ‘Competency Map’ containing principles used by students to achieve their learning goals and understand the learning materials provided in each chapter in order that the materials delivered can be well-structured. (2) The examples provided in the textbook are less relevant to the characteristics of diverse backgrounds and social statuses; contain the issues of ethnicity, religion, race, intergroup relations; and do not suit the needs. Abstract:
There is broad recognition that a textbook, among other components, plays an important role in many English language classrooms today. As a result, its evaluation is a significant issue to guarantee its contribution to the success of the teaching- learning process. Evaluating textbooks and other instructional materials used in the teaching- learning contexts is one of the responsibilities of teachers. The textbooks adopted in Kurdistan university language centers are no exception. Hence, the present paper is an attempt to conduct a post-use evaluation for the content of one of the textbooks (Interchange 3) used at the intermediate level in Kurdistan university English language proficiency courses. It aims to determine the areas of strengths and weaknesses of the textbook content and to see to what extent it was appropriate in helping the learners improve their level of English from the teachers’ perspectives. The textbook is analyzed using a descriptive content analysis method. For this purpose, 23 teachers who taught this textbook in six different language centers were asked to participate and the data were obtained through a 24-item questionnaire suggested by Demir and Ertaș (2014). The results of the content analysis indicated that the teachers are highly satisfied with the textbook under evaluation regardless of some deficiencies in certain aspects of the textbook - and that the textbook suited the teaching/ learning context as it could provide sufficient meaningful opportunities for the learners to communicate with the target language.

This scientific article assesses the process of studying educational materials in subjects in secondary schools of the Kyrgyz Republic using electronic textbooks. Currently, there are very few electronic textbook options for school subjects. In fact, electronic versions of school subjects would give impetus to the self-development of students with the help of electronic versions of textbooks. In this case, the students would get time for independent study of incomprehensible learning materials. The article focuses on the educational activities in which the student works without the participation of a teacher. In this case, the student undergoes self-analysis and planning of educational activities, or rather, evaluates whch materials are not fully known, for this the student independently analyzes the educational materials and repeats. This, of course, ensures the quality of education for itself and develops independently (at the same time, the student uses audio, video materials, textual content of the textbook, presentations and computer test in an electronic textbook).

Abstract:
Textbooks are considered an essential component of classroom materials. Teachers usually examine a wide range of textbooks offered in the book market to determine an appropriate one that fits the pedagogical demands. Textbooks’ evaluation is, therefore, important to determine and improve their suitability for students’ needs. Specifically, in teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP), textbooks play a significant role in enhancing students’ learning of specialized English skills and using such skills to address occupational needs.  This study was undertaken to evaluate the quality of the Business Result Second Edition (2017) textbook and its suitability for the needs of students majoring in Business Administration (BA) at the College of Business Studies (CBS) in Kuwait. An evaluation checklist was utilized to examine five factors (subject matter, linguistic issues, exercises and activities, course objectives, and layout of materials and visuals). Participants included 10 English language teachers who taught the ESP course at CBS. Results indicated that despite having some disadvantages, the textbook was relatively suitable for the course. The findings of this study can be adopted by the curricula designers at CBS to improve or modify the textbook in question.

Abstract:
This paper demonstrates how history textbooks can be used in high school classrooms as ‘primary’ as well as ‘secondary’ sources, to develop learners as critical and curious readers of history. History textbooks, like any other historical account, are a form of discourse which present a selected and ideologically constructed interpretation of the past; however, school learners tend to view them uncritically as 'the truth'. Simple strategies of ‘annotation and tabulation’ provide scaffolding which enable learners to deconstruct the textbook extracts (literally and figuratively) and identify the similarities and differences between accounts given of the same event. This in turn make more visible the ideological construction of school textbooks and the authorial positionality of the writers, encouraging learners to ask questions about their provenance and purpose. The classroom activities described in this article encourage learners to consider the effect and affect of telling the stories of the past in different ways, and help them to develop their disciplinary skills of reading and thinking like a historian.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine the influence of students’ profiles and the usage of e-books, online educational materials, and other programming books on the adoption of printed programming textbooks for computing students. It was hypothesized that the predictor variable set could not explain any of the variance of the dependent variables. Design/methodology/approach This descriptive study utilized a content-validated questionnaire. The study involved 190 student participants. Canonical correlation analysis was employed to determine whether students’ profiles and use, perceived usefulness, and preference of e-books, online educational materials, and other programming books explained any variance in printed programming textbook adoption. Findings Printed programming textbook adoption could be explained by two functions. The first function revealed that the use and the perceived usefulness of textbooks were positively influenced by the use of e-books and other programming books and by the perceived usefulness of e-books, fora/blogs, other programming books, and YouTube. The second function revealed that the use of printed programming textbooks alone was positively influenced by the use of e-books and other programming books but was negatively influenced by the perceived usefulness of programming websites and YouTube and by the preference of programming websites over textbooks. Originality/value The study provided empirical evidence that e-books, other programming books, and online educational materials provide additional resources to students. Thus, e-books, online educational materials, and other programming books complement, rather than threaten, the existence of printed programming textbooks.

Abstract:
Purpose of the study: A textbook is a book containing comprehensive teaching-learning materials for a certain subject which is regularly used by both teachers and students at school. Textbooks should not contain unfair content or matters, such as gender bias. This study was conducted to examine the extent to which gender bias appears in the EFL textbook mostly employed in Aceh, Indonesia. Methodology: This research was aimed at investigating the representation levels of gender in English elementary textbooks of Grow with English book 4, book 5, and book 6. A content analysis method was used, for which every page of the textbooks was investigated to explore the five aspects of visibility, priority, feminine/masculine generic construction, activity, and occupation. Main Findings: The result of the investigation shows that every textbook contains gender bias of various representation levels. Males dominated three categories, namely priority, activity, and occupation. Meanwhile, females are only dominant in the visibility category. The results suggest that the EFL textbooks mostly used in Aceh are still not free from gender bias issues. Applications of this study: Indonesia is a country where English is used as a Foreign Language (EFL). Indonesian schools are apt to use textbooks written by Indonesian authors as the major source for English instruction in schools. Therefore, researchers should focus their attention on the content of English textbooks used in schools because they become the guidance for these students in learning. Novelty/Originality of this study: The results of the study suggest that the EFL textbook should be considered for revision to ensure that it is free from unfair content. This is aimed at national textbook designers when they have to produce a textbook for Indonesian learners so that the books they make available to schools are free from gender bias issues in the textbooks.

Abstract:
The present study aims to use Sociocultural Identity theory to education with reference to teaching and learning English as a second language in the EFL textbooks development. The findings of this study revealed that there is a need to use the cultural sensitive and context-appropriate materials in the EFL textbooks. It is urgent to teaching materials correspond with the learners’ attitudes, religious opinions and preferences. Because, textbook is not only a commercially accessible reference book which is utilized in a language teaching program, it additionally serves as a significant way to convey political and ideological orientation. Moreover, textbooks decide not only content teaching and learning environments, but also what dominant or valid culture is passed on. Then one goal of textbooks is to serve as a means of facilitating the integration of content about ethnically, racially and culturally diverse individuals. To this end, textbook writers should avoid cultural inequalities and prejudices that learners can absorb in their learning, and have a balanced representation of social / cultural components such as ethnicity, gender, and race.

Abstract:
The current study aimed at analyzing an English textbook titled English Alive used by English teachers from some senior high schools in Curup, Bengkulu, Indonesia. The textbook analysis was oriented towards two domains, namely genres and lexical density, by applying a content analysis method. This study revealed that the English Alive textbook had five genres: reading materials in the narrative, report, analytical exposition, spoof, and hortatory exposition. Those genres were embedded in sixteen passages distributed to the entire textbook, and those passages were mapped into ten units. Lexical density measurement indicated that most of the passages were categorized as easy to be comprehended, and a few passages were categorized as too easy to be comprehended. However, text genres in this textbook did not sufficiently conform to the distribution of English reading materials as suggested by the K-13 curriculum. Some reading passages did not seem contributive to students’ English acquisition according to comprehensible input theory and other related findings. Hence, the English Alive textbook could be used in today’s context and needs as supplementary material, but the primary reading materials should be resting upon K-13-driven English textbooks. Strength and weaknesses were also identified from the English Alive textbook. The former could be noted that this textbook adopted the constructivism theory and genre-based approach properly. However, the latter indicated that the provision of genre materials did not entirely conform to essential competencies formulated in the current K-13 curriculum of English education. Further studies could analyze more textbooks to help teachers choose appropriate English textbooks.

Abstract:
Purpose – This study aims to add to the body of literature by examining students’ satisfaction with e-textbooks. As higher education evolves, one instructional tool, the classic textbook, is undergoing various transformations. In today’s classrooms, many e-textbooks are in use and there are implications. Design/methodology/approach – A researcher-developed instrument measured 115 undergraduate students’ satisfaction levels for e-textbooks used in two courses, and a learning styles instrument was given to identify student learning preferences. Findings – Through factor analysis, a few dimensions emerged regarding factors related to satisfaction. The factors included features, usability and learning facilitation provided by the e-textbooks. In general, students had a moderately above-neutral, positive attitude toward the e-textbooks. Gender, grade point average, time spent weekly reading e-textbooks and a few learning style tendencies can significantly predict, to some extent, different dimensions of satisfaction. Practical implications – Usability design of e-textbooks plays a key role in student satisfaction toward digital materials. Moreover, instructors need to use meaningful instructional activities as they adopt the usage of e-textbooks. Originality/value – The findings can help shed light on ways to enable students to become more satisfied with digital textbooks and can help policymakers and instructors evaluate and effectively adopt the appropriate digital materials to meet individual needs.

Abstract:
The objective of this study are to: (1) find out whether the English textbooks of Mandiri and Solatif for seventh grade have fulfilled the criteria of good textbook, (2) reveal the suitability of the two textbooks with the 2013 Curriculum. This research was conducted using evaluation research. The design was employed to obtain information about the conformity between the basic competences in syllabus of 2013 Curriculum with the materials in the English textbooks and also between the criteria of a good textbook by Cunningsworth with the English textbooks. In this study, two English textbooks; Mandiri and Solatif for seventh grade of junior high school were taken to be analyzed. The results showed that Solatif meets three criteria of a good textbook by Cunningsworth. They are aim and approaches, topics, and methodology. It is partly suitable with four categories: design and organization, language content, skills, and political consideration. However it fails to meet one criterion, which is teacher’s book. Mandiri meets none of the criteria of a good textbook by Cunningsworth. It is partly suitable in seven criteria which are aims and approaches, design and organization, language content, skills, topics, methodology, and political consideration. It fails to meet one criterion; teacher’s book. Based on the data got from the conformity of Solatif with the 2013 Curriculum, it can be summarized that the materials in Solatif covers eight KDs for the seventh grade of junior high school, meaning that it accommodates all what is needed by the students for seventh grade of junior high school. Mandiri. It covers seven KDs for the seventh grade of junior high school. Unfortunately, it does not cover one of the last KD.

Abstract:
Although prior research has examined student perceptions of open materials, research investigating students’ perceptions of open versus copyright-restricted textbooks through a direct, experimental approach is lacking. To better understand how students perceive open textbooks outside the context of the classroom, we examined students’ perceptions of unfamiliar open and non-open (copyright-restricted) psychology textbooks. Forty-four introductory psychology students reviewed chapters from two open textbooks and two traditional/copyrightrestricted textbooks and then ranked the textbooks from most to least favourite. Students rated each chapter on several quality measures, including layout structure, visual appeal, ease of reading, and instructional features. Next, bibliographical information and cost were revealed, and students re-ranked the textbooks accordingly. Before knowing the bibliographic information and cost, students were more likely to prefer the two traditional textbooks. There after, they were more likely to select the open texts. Students often referred to textbook price as a determining factor for their change.

Abstract:
Analysing gender issues in the teaching materials in the textbook is crucial as students' way of perceiving gender in their daily lives might be shaped by what they have learned at school. This research concerns analysing how gender representation in two EFL textbooks utilized in Indonesian secondary schools, Pathway to English for SMA/MA grade, later called textbook 1 in this study and Forward an English Course for Vocational School Students Grade VII, which was later called textbook 2. Both were published by Erlangga. The theory of personal characters proposed by (Brugeilles and Sylvie, 2009) was used as the basis theory in this study. Employing mixed-method research approaches, the researchers analysed how visuals in both textbooks portrayed gender representation by focusing on the frequency of pictures of male and female characters, occupations and activities. The study reveals that the two books show an imbalance of gender representation in all three aspects. Gender bias, especially for female occupations and activities, is apparent in the two textbooks. This study suggests that EFL teachers evaluate their textbooks to advocate for gender equality in the classroom.

Abstract:
The Malaysian education system has transformed from the traditional to the modern, albeit keeping to textbooks as the main teaching material. Among the factors determining the quality of textbooks, color is an important one, especially in primary school textbooks. Suitably applied, it will enrich classroom instruction and aid the learning process. This research was designed to run in two phases, and the data collected were analyzed by SPSS software. In the first phase, the colors used in the pictures of Year-4 English textbook were evaluated. Next, the color preferences of 384 students in the fourth grade of national primary schools were collected. Data from the first phase show that out of 901 textbook pictures, 792, 733, and 412 respectively use primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. Data from the second phase show the students highly interested in tertiary colors. The results of this study reveal important points for textbook quality improvement. Knowing what colors students like allows illustrators to consider age levels, not only when illustrating textbooks but also when creating pictures for other materials.

Abstract:
The purpose of this researh is to determine the results of the development of scientific-based textbooks at office technology subjects at SMK Ketintang Surabaya. The office technology teacher at Ketintang Vocational School in Surabaya stated that teaching materials in the form of textbooks did not exist before. This whole time, the teacher uses LKS and materials found from the internet for the learning activities. However, the LKS used is not in accordance with the syllabus in the revised edition of the 2013 curriculum which emphasizes on the scientific learning (5M). This definitely does not reflect the characteristics of learning that should be student-centered. The type of research used is Research and Development (R&D) with the 4D development model developed by Thiagarajan, namely defining, designing, developing, and disseminating. However, this research was only carried out until the design stage only due to the limitations in this study. The results of this research are analyzing the textbooks that will be developed which begin with the define stage which includes the preliminary analysis, analysis of students, task analysis, concept analysis, and specifications of learning objectives. Next step is the design phase which includes the preparation of the textbook, the selection of the textbook format, and the design of the textbook itself. Therefore, it is expected that the development of scientific-based textbooks in office technology subjects at SMK Ketintang Suarabaya can help the teachers to deliver the learning materials and can facilitate students in understanding those materials in office technology subjects.

Abstract:
The effectiveness of teaching in primary schools depends on the pupils’ active engagement. When teaching the pupils of today, different forms and methods have to be used to organise the learning process, rather than opting for the simple transfer of knowledge directly from teacher to pupil. Pupils today do not simply sit and listen to the teacher and answer his/her questions. They also discuss and relate what they are taught to their personal experiences. A number of studies show that a person absorbs different amounts of information when listening, watching, listening and watching, and actively participating. The pupils’ involvement during the different activities in the lesson varies. Their acquisition capacity is different when listening to a teacher’s explanations, reading, observing a demonstration, practicing or using a computer, multimedia and electronic resources. The electronic textbook (also known as e-textbook) is a teaching tool and a rich source of additional tasks and materials for pupils and teachers. Electronic textbooks are digitised versions of paper textbooks. Electronic textbooks can be used online or offline. Electronic versions contain additional materials, such as audio, video, animations, 3D visualisations and interactive tests, as well as hyperlinks to relevant websites. The electronic readable textbook is identical to the approved print edition of the textbook. The electronic readable textbook creates a realistic page-turning effect in PDF format. In Bulgaria, new mathematics learning sets were created for primary school classes in accordance with the new Preschool and School Education Act, which came into force from the 2016/2017 school year, and the modified curricula. An electronic textbook and an electronic readable textbook have been developed for each new textbook. E-textbooks are free of charge for teachers who have chosen to teach using the paper textbook of the relevant publisher. Pupils and parents can also access them after registering on the publisher’s website. The Ministry of Education and Science requires that publishers give parents and pupils free access to electronic readable textbooks. The main idea of this article is to present an analysis of the third grade mathematics textbook published by Anubis and the electronic resources it features (additional tasks and materials). The article will also include the opinions of pedagogical students collected in a survey of the use of electronic textbooks in teaching primary school pupils.
