Abstract:
Motivation for using corpus linguistics in English language teaching is partly related to the inconsistencies found between the use of lexical items and grammatical structures in the corpora and those in traditional language textbooks that are often largely based on the personal judgments of the materials writers. This lack of fit between the language in the textbook and authentic language use has been reported in many studies; yet, an overview of this aspect has not been carried out. The purpose of this study is twofold: 1) to discuss the importance of corpus linguistics for the development of English language teaching materials, and 2) to present a survey of studies carried out in the last ten years, with particular reference to the mismatches found between the language in various corpora such as Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English (LSWE) and British National Corpus (BNC) and that used in Finnish EFL textbooks, Malaysian ESL textbooks and Hong Kong secondary textbooks to name a few. The implication of this study is to provide L2 teachers with useful information about pedagogical corpus and the ways in which they can make optimal use of a textbook’s strong points, recognizing the shortcomings of certain exercises, tasks, or entire texts and to show how they can improve the textbook and adapt their teaching materials accordingly.

Abstract:
The research aimed to assess the readability of reading material in two different English textbooks published by different publishers. Many pieces of research have been conducted to examine the reading materials in English textbooks, and it had been discovered that the reading materials were insufficiently adequate for the levels of students. The research applied a descriptive content analysis method to analyze, interpret, and describe the data. The Flesch Reading Ease formula was as an instrument. The research’s data were derived from the English textbook “Pathway to English” by Erlangga grade X and the English textbook “Bahasa Inggris” by The Ministry of Education and Culture grade X. Based on the findings of the research, five reading texts out of 15 match with students’ level (fairly difficult level) of grade X in the first textbook, while three texts out of 13 equal with students’ level (fairly difficult level) of grade X in the second textbook. Furthermore, the first textbook’s average readability score indicates that the texts are ‘standard’, whereas the second textbook indicates that the texts are ‘fairly difficult’. Based on the study findings, some recommendations for teachers are to use the readability formulas to provide appropriate reading material for students, as well as for other researchers to conduct a larger context about readability.

Abstract:
The use of EFL published materials like textbooks are becoming more widespread as they can bring easiness in the classroom by providing teachers with guidelines comprised of syllabus, methodologies, as well as materials for teaching and learning. However, choosing a suitable textbook for their teaching situation is deemed to be one of the most challenging tasks that EFL teachers often face. To get a good picture of the suitability of a textbook, a careful investigation needs to be undertaken. This study focused on the analysis and evaluation of two different English textbooks addressed to junior high schools grade VII in Indonesia, KTSP and curriculum 2013 textbook. Harmer’s (2007) framework was employed to figure out the strengths and weaknesses of each textbook. The analysis revealed that both textbooks are quite satisfactory as they are very affordable, contain interesting layout, attractive designs, and clear instructions, correspond to current ELT methodology, cover all language skills, and comprise a wide range of topics which are familiar and culturally appropriate for learners. Nonetheless, the KTSP textbook does not have add-ons and extra materials; meanwhile, curriculum 2013 textbook is weak in providing authentic listening materials. Therefore, although the teachers manage to use the textbooks as their core materials, they are supposed to make adjustment and supplement them with other materials according to their learners’ needs and their teaching context.

Abstract:
The article considers the issue of textbook development in accordance with the reform the New Ukrainian School. It presents the essence of the concepts “textbook development” and “the didactic material” based on the scientific literature. The authors argue that the main task of a school textbook remains unchanged, though the changes occur due to the new functions of a book in modern society development. They compare general criteria for textbooks design in the works of Jan Amos Komensky and the criteria developed in alignment with The New Ukrainian School reform. The teachers today are given the opportunity to choose the textbook, which will help them to best implement the content of primary education. Thus, each teacher in schools with the instruction in the Ukrainian language has a wide range of the Ukrainian language and reading textbooks to choose from (10 textbooks (2018) recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine). The authors of the article focus on the practical aspects of the primary school teachers’ evaluation of the materials selected in the textbooks. In-depth analysis allowed specifying the criteria that teachers should pay attention to in choosing the Ukrainian language and reading textbook for the 1st grade based on the practical aspect of the selected didactic materials. The results of the primary school teachers’ survey on the issue of the didactic material selection are presented. The survey revealed that there is a need for special events (seminars, workshops, webinars etc.) aimed at the development of teachers’ quality skills to analyze the didactic content of the textbooks for their objective evaluation and selection. Keywords: textbook, textbook design, didactic material, illustrative material, selection criteria.

Abstract:
Abstract Textbooks’ fundamental influence on teaching is caused not only by their subject matter, but also by their didactic elaboration. Textbooks’ individual functions are fulfilled through incorporated structural elements. Their pool is referred to as the didactic equipment of the textbook and represents qualities of the textbook through the options it gives to its users. The presented overview of lower-secondary chemistry textbooks’ didactic equipment included 7 series of currently available textbooks. Results of the analysis serve not only as a possible guide for chemistry teachers’ textbook selection, but they also provide insight into the current state to authors of textbooks and other didactic materials. Chemistry textbooks for lower-secondary schools achieve relatively high didactic equipment (75-92 %). The best equipped are the series of textbooks published after the current state curriculum introduction (by publishing houses Fraus and Nova Skola). Surprisingly, however, the most recently published textbooks by the Taktik publishing house showed the lowest didactic equipment.

Abstract:
This study aims to analyze and evaluate the EFL Textbooks for the eleventh grade of Vocational High School. The entitle of the textbook is Forward, an English Course for Vocational Students. EFL Textbooks have become an essential thing used in foreign language teaching. The textbook is a guide for teachers in carrying out the learning and teaching process in the classroom. The textbook consists of a syllabus, methodology, and supporting materials for teaching in the school. Currently, choosing a textbook is a challenging job for EFL teachers because textbooks must be under the material to be taught in class. To evaluate the content of this textbook, the theory of Harmer has been adopted to research assessing and analyzing the textbook. Researchers want to know the strengths and weaknesses of the textbook. After implementing Harmer's theory, researchers found results that showed that textbooks were satisfactory because they were affordable, contained attractive layouts, attractive designs, and clear instructions. It conforms to the current ELT methodology, covers the four language skills, and comprises a variety of culturally appropriate topics. In addition, it has add-ons, contains additional material, and provides authentic listening material. However, teachers have succeeded in using textbooks as teaching materials and are expected to help teachers meet the learning needs of students in EFL classes.

Abstract:
Textbook materials continue to play an important role in foreign language teaching and learning classroom. Textbooks are significant because these materials are considered elements in the field of foreign language learning. Teachers are often engaged in the application of textbooks for common teaching goals. Although the significance of the application of textbooks is accepted, ideas on whether textbooks could assist or hinder the teaching–learning process seem polarizing. This study employed a Likert scale survey to collect data on the evaluation of Japanese for busy people I: Romanized version (3rd Edition), a Japanese language textbook for new learners. The survey checklist yielded a highly unusual result, that is, all the participants advocated the use of the textbook. This study was conducted in the Greater Boston region in Massachusetts, MA, USA. Upon investigation, over 30 language learning centers, nearly 20 postsecondary institutions, and above 20 secondary schools were determined to be offering Japanese language courses. A total of 49 participants responded to the survey. None of the participants provided negative comments about the textbook. In addition, over 90% of the participants believed that the textbook materials and exercises were organized, contemporary, and applicable.

Abstract:
Higher thinking skills must be possessed by students in facing 21st century education. Creative thinking skills are needed in various ways, especially in learning to improve student learning outcomes in class. So that text books are needed as a support for the learning process. For this reason, it is necessary to pay attention to whether the textbooks used are in accordance with the demands of the current 2013 curriculum. One of the curricula in the 2013 curriculum is the use of texts that can facilitate students' creative thinking skills. So it is necessary to analyze physics learning textbooks for class XI semester 2 on static fluid, temperature and heat materials as well as optical devices to find out whether the presentation of physics textbooks for class XI facilitates creative thinking skills. The population in this study were all textbooks for physics class XI published in Indonesia and used in West Sumatra. The samples used in this study were MK-ER textbooks and MR-TS textbooks. The results of the analysis show that the MR-TS physics textbook is a physics textbook with the highest level of availability of creative thinking indicators with a percentage of 38.69% in the less available category. While the MK-ER physical textbook has the lowest level of availability of creative thinking indicators with 37.68% results being in the less available category. This shows that the MR-TS physics textbook and MK-ER physics textbook have not been perfect in facilitating students creative thinking skills.

Abstract:
The problem of creating a new generation textbook and the implementation of the motivational function in primary school textbooks has been substantiated. The motivational function is characterized as a leading one for the textbooks. The recent publications on the discussed issue have been analyzed. The article emphasizes the importance of the textbook analysis techniques for strengthening its motivational function. The technique of the motivational component representation in the Ukrainian language textbooks for the third grade has been described. The textbook analysis has been carried out considering the following components of the motivational function of the primary school textbooks: the emotional content of educational materials, the ways of its didactic organization, the design of the textbooks. Analyzing the content of the textbooks, the author has taken into account the cognitive interests of young learners and the content characteristics of the materials. Considering the cognitive interests of students means that the textbook contains interesting cognitive materials, various literary genres, topics important for third-graders. The analysis of the subject content with the most interesting information for young learners draws attention to the presence of developmental texts (scientific facts in biology, geography, history, ecology, Ukrainian language, etc.) real life situations, facts from today’s reality; local lore materials; folk works; interesting tasks; famous people’s quotations; elements of humor etc. The presence of various literary genres in the textbook (articles, stories, poems, fairy tales, legends, songs, works of small folklore forms, etc.) has been analyzed. Topics significant for third-graders (changes in natural world, history of the local area, human relationships, stories about famous people, scientific travels, discoveries, life abroad, children’s dreams and hobbies, healthy lifestyle etc) have been analyzed. The author also takes into consideration semantic characteristics of the materials (value, accessibility, curiosity, emotionality). The analysis of the ways of didactic organization of educational materials takes into account the availability of practical tasks, didactic games, tasks involving emotional and evaluative activities, developmental tools, interactive teaching methods, the way of presenting the materials. The design of the textbook has been analyzed in terms of keeping to hygienic requirements, aesthetic and didactic criteria of the decoration. The research has contributed to identifying new possible problems that deserve special study, in particular, the problem of application of emotional and artistic materials in textbooks.

Abstract:
In second language teaching, materials play a unique role and the demand of developing language-teaching materials has been increasing. The textbook, an integral part of language-teaching materials, to some extent dominates the contents of teaching and learning and has a deep influence on curriculum. Textbooks for extensive reading apparently highlights this feature while some kind of series adopted in universities have several shortcomings in the representativeness of the articles and their variety of the categories, etc. which makes it hard to play an active role and have a positive impact in teaching and learning process. Some teachers ignore the development of this ability and the significant contribution they can make to evaluating and selecting textbooks. Thus, the author collects basic information from one series of textbooks and analyzes it systematically, and then shows overall comments with detailed suggestions on contents as: selecting more articles from representative writers; increasing articles about history and philosophy; selecting more current articles from magazines; adding more poems and attaching more detailed introductions about the authors and reference books to read. These suggestions will provide some implication for extensive reading textbook evaluation and selection, thereby, the selected textbooks can be at the good service for extensive reading teaching and teachers can get a self-development in the process.

Abstract:
Comparative research on the treatment of animal materials in Chinese elementary language textbooks and American elementary reading textbooks provides an interesting perspective on both Chinese and American cultures. The study uses both quantitative and qualitative methods. From the study, we notice that animals in Chinese textbooks are presented as animals, i.e., creatures closer to nature without human fantasy and illusion attached to them. Animals are used to communicate to children for moral education, wisdom development and so on. By comparison, animals in American textbooks are presented as much closer to humans. Animals dress and act like humans and are found in human setting. Animals can be more human than humans. Idealistic images and dreams are frequently linked to animals rather than humans. Textbooks are cultural mirrors. The different orientations of animal materials indicateenculturation of children. The cultural reasons beneath these surface differences are examined. Predictions are different cultural values and different goals for the provided on the animal enculturation in future China.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to access the experiences of teachers of English (i.e. English as a foreign language teachers) when teaching cultural elements through coursebooks which are assigned by their schools/universities, and the materials which they use to deliver these lessons plus the activities that they normally select for their classes. Moreover, teachers’ opinions concerning the learning and teaching of cultural elements are studied in this research. Teachers, both native and non-native speakers of English, participated in this research and have EFL teaching experience from 2 years to 30 years. An open-ended questionnaire (85) followed by semi-structured interviews (28) were conducted to learn more of teachers’ experiences and to obtain further details of their opinions on teaching and learning cultures through coursebooks. All data from questionnaires were coded manually and Nvivo 9 and 10 were also utilised while processing and analysing the findings (i.e. to store interview transcripts and extracting participants’ words and coding them appropriately. The details can be found in the Data Analysis section). The study has clearly shown that EFL teachers use the internet, youtube and other kinds of websites through electrical devices such as computers and smart boards and other sorts of authentic materials (e.g. current newspapers or magazines). Youtube is used for authentic material, and the BBC and some other news channels are also accessed for listening tasks. Written materials are less applied in classrooms since teachers think that electronic media materials are more visual for students, thus helping them to understand more easily , encouraging motivation and gaining more attention in lessons. Teachers recommend that learning cultures through coursebooks would benefit students, as language and culture are interlinked, and it would make students not only become fluent speakers of English but also help them to become interculturally competent persons.

Hsu, Shih-Yin. "Learning strategies and materials selection in the English for tourism classroom : a study of learning strategies employed by learners in the British context, with consideration of implications for published materials selection." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1999. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10006622/.

Full text
Abstract:
There are two enquiries undertaken in this work which is an investigation of learning strategies employed by students of English for Tourism in the British context, and an evaluation of textbooks already used for teaching this programme in Taiwan and relevant ones published in the United Kingdom. It is hoped that this work will have direct implications for pedagogy and learning processes of the English for Tourism programme in the Taiwanese context. This thesis is made up of four parts. The first part is Chapter 1 which investigates general broad backgrounds in the Taiwanese context. It also deals with the debate on the improvement of English language teaching in this context. It further discusses how this context relates to this work. The second part includes Chapters 2, 3, and 4, offering the theoretical framework on which an empirical research and a desk-based study of textbooks are based. Chapter 2 primarily examines the features of English for Tourism by taking account of the general key issues of ESP relevant to needs analysis, content and language, and methodology, and the specific crucial issues in relation to the target situation in the tourism industry, tourism education and training, and cultural content. It further postulates that communicative language teaching and learning strategies are closely relevant to the efficiency of ESP teaching. These are defined and explored in depth in Chapters 3 and 4 respectively. The third part consists of an empirical research and a desk-based study (Chapters 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9). Chapter 5 discusses research methodology indicating that a qualitative approach has been preferred to a quantitative approach. The empirical research will be based on participant observations (Chapter 6) and semi-structured interviews (Chapter 7). It will be followed by a desk-based study of textbooks (Chapter 9). Chapters 6 and 7 are mainly descriptive. Chapter 8 interprets the major findings of this empirical research, discusses the issues they raise and goes on to suggest improvements to the pedagogy and learning processes in the Taiwanese context. It indicates that social strategies and social interaction bothinside and outside the classroom are the most significant factors for learning processes. It suggests furthermore that a combination model of notional-functional and task-based approaches is essential for the effective English for Tourism syllabuses and methodologies in the Taiwanese context. Chapter 9 is a desk-based study of textbooks to evaluate and select appropriate and useful textbook for teaching English for Tourism in the Taiwanese context. The final part is Chapter 10. This chapter reviews the principal themes in the preceding chapters, and offers principles of approach which guide the teaching and learning of English for Tourism in the Taiwanese context.

Payne, Kenneth L. "Financing instructional materials in Indiana public school corporations." Virtual Press, 1987. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/505144.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to analyze current procedures utilized for financing textbooks and related instructional materials by Indiana public school corporations and public school corporations in selected states. Respective practices were examined in order to determine feasible methods/alternatives for Indiana school corporations to use in overcoming the contemporary financial and administrative dilemma which existed in the 1985-86 school year.A descriptive questionnaire was developed from a review of literature and with the assistance of colleagues. Data obtained by the instrument were analyzed using frequency tabulations and percentages. Based on information gained from the study and data collected in superintendents in Indiana, solutions to financing instructional materials for Indiana school corporations were determined.Data collected supported the following conclusions: 1. Public school corporations in Indiana charge fees for textbooks and related instructional materials and are experiencing difficulties in collecting textbook rental and related fees from parents or guardians of school children.2. The use of small claims court for recovering fees is not an effective method for most public school corporations in Indiana.3. Township trustees and/or county councils should pay for textbooks and instructional materials of students whose parents or guardians are declared by the courts to be indigent.4. The current formula for determining textbook rental rates is satisfactory.5. Legislation should be adopted to permit public school corporations to increase revenue in order to finance textbooks and related instructional materials.6. To be in concert with other states in the United States and more specifically within the Great Lakes Region, public school students should be supplied textbooks and related instructional materials without charge.7. The location and size of school corporations have implications to problems existing in public school corporations when administering textbook rental programs.8. Lack of additional finance has restricted public school corporations in implementing new programs to be funded by the general fund budget.9. Based on the average rankings of ten regions, public school corporations in Regions I, II, and VI encountered the greatest difficulty in financing textbooks and related instructional materials. Public school corporations have the least problems in supplying textbooks to school students.10. Based on the average rankings of six enrollment groups, public school corporations in the smallest three groups had the greatest success in financing textbooks and related instructional materials for students.11. Additional costs for school corporations are incurred when interest is paid to publishers for overdue accounts or for installment payment programs.12. School corporations with deficit balances or significantly decreasing balances in textbook rental accounts are in. need of assistance in collecting outstanding fees from constituents and/or means of generating sufficient revenue to account for required textbooks and related instructional materials for students.

Abstract:
The aim of this project is to provide useful data from published dictionaries, corpora, and instructional materials, as well as sample lessons, to promote the teaching of Unorthodox Oral Expressions (UOEs) to learners of English as a second/foreign language. In the first chapter, the author reviews relevant literature, explains what UOEs are, and discusses the importance of incorporating UOEs in EFL or ESL classrooms. In the second chapter, a linguistic categorization of UOEs is given. In the third chapter, the results are given of an examination of 10 different dictionaries. The purpose of this examination was to find which of 56 target UOEs are included in each dictionary and what kind of definitions are given for them. The results show that many common UOEs are not included in most, or any, dictionaries. For the UOEs that are included in most dictionaries, the definitions do not always agree, and factors such as intonation are not taken into account. Moreover, the explanations on how the UOEs can be used are not complete. In the fourth chapter, three English language corpora are examined to discover which of the target 56 UOEs are the most frequently used. The results show some differences in UOE frequency between the corpora that include both spoken and written English text and the spoken English corpora. In the fifth chapter, the teaching of UOEs in ESL textbooks is analyzed. The results show that most of these books do not teach UOEs explicitly. In chapter six, experimental instructional units are provided. Results of piloting these lessons at Brigham Young University's English Language Center are discussed. In the last chapter, the author suggests possible future research involving UOEs.

Abstract:
This study is about the structure and content of two specific English textbooks used in upper secondary school. The aim of the study is to get a deeper understanding of the structure of textbooks in English teaching, and what topics are used and what skills are emphasised when teaching English as a second language with the guidance of those textbooks. The textbooks studied, World Wide English 5 Samhällsvetenskapsprogrammet and In Real Life, are designed for the course ‘English 5’ in the upper secondary school curriculum. World Wide English 5 Samhällsvetenskapsprogrammet is designed for an academic program, while In Real Life is designed for  vocational programs. The study contains a content analysis of the textbooks with both a qualitative perspective and a quantitative perspective. The quantitative part of the analysis shows the different kinds of skills promoted by the exercises while the qualitative part shows what different texts are used in the textbooks. The study of the textbooks shows that when it comes to texts the textbooks emphasise different types of text (eg. fictional or non fictional) for the different programs. The exercises in both books focus on vocabulary and grammar activities. This study concludes that the textbooks are different but also have some similarities and both encourage the communicative aspects promoted in the new curriculum.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of an intermediate textbook titled &ldquo
New Bridge to Success 3&rdquo
, which was prepared by Ministry of National Education as an instructional material for the ninth grade high school students from the perspectives of the teachers and students. The evaluation of the textbook concerned was conducted at macro level on the basis of eleven criteria. Both quantitative and qualitative data were obtained through student questionnaires administered to 336 students and interviews with eight teachers. Frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations were calculated for each item to describe the overall picture of how the students rated the textbook in terms of ten criteria. Data collected through interviews were transcribed, content- analyzed and grouped according to 11 criteria used in this study for the evaluation of the particular textbook The results revealed that both teachers and students felt negative about the most of the characteristics of the textbook. It was found that the reading passages needed to be simplified in terms of both vocabulary load and structures. Majority of the students and all the teachers mentioned that the level of the textbook was not appropriate for the particular age group. It also indicated that the materials failed to consider learning style preferences of the visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learner. On the other hand, one of the strengths of the textbook was the artwork&rsquo

Abstract:
An important part of the training process is textbook evaluation, which lets students determine whether or not the curriculum satisfies their goals while also helping teachers enhance their professional capacities. The textbook is still the most common type of material utilized in today's foreign language classrooms. It serves as the core of a training program and provides learners with the essential input they require through a wide range of different activities. This article clarified the textbook, coursebook, and materials' roles in ELT classrooms. This article also reviewed three main approaches to coursebook evaluation: Tomlinson’s approach (2003), Littlejohn’s approach (1998 & 2011), and McGrath’s approach (2002). The author also summarized the main criteria for textbook evaluation. The design of future textbooks at tertiary levels is discussed, along with some of the potential directions that could be taken.

Abstract:
This corpus-based study investigates the vocabulary of modern Russian textbooks for primary school children with different language proficiency in Russian (L1, L2 and bilingual children). As there are very limited requirements for this kind of educational materials and no official frameworks of language proficiency for very young learners of Russian, we suppose that the objective analysis of current coursebooks can show the present state of the field and reveal the areas of improvement. In this paper we focus on a detailed frequency analysis of vocabulary items and collocations within different sections of textbooks. For the research purposes a special textbook corpus TIRTEC has been created and annotated. By comparing the lexical content of textbooks, we endeavour to reveal the methodological approach to language teaching of children with different educational needs. Also the data from textbooks is compared to the words frequency range according to Russian National Corpus, so it permits to evaluate modern Russian textbooks in terms of their affinity to the “real” language.

Abstract. In order to help people better understand the culture of the Republic of China (ROC), experience the cultural connotation of ROC, and facilitate the research by researchers and the inheritance of ROC culture, this article proposes a ROC textbook retrieval system. The system is mainly divided into four modules: login and registration, book retrieval, online reading, and document downloading. We summarized and classified existing ROC textbooks, and converted them into electronic materials by scanning to build a database of ROC textbooks. According to the characteristics of textbooks, a fast retrieval algorithm is proposed to provide users with book search, online reading and other functions on the client interface, enabling users to search and read ROC textbooks online at all times and places through electronic devices, accumulating cultural literacy. Users can also download books and documents according to their own needs.

Abstract:
Students’ reading of the course materials had never been measured because no data was available. It was assumed that students who performed better in their learning would have read their course materials more compared to those who performed poorly. The Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) provided course materials in electronic forms in textbooks and study guides. The purpose of this study, based on data from the Academic Year 2020, was to find out was there a correlation between students’ reading of the course materials and their performance in 10 online courses. A quantitative approach was used in the study. It was found that a very weak positive relationship, r (0.151), existed for students who read the e-textbooks while there was almost no relationship, r (0.084), for students who read the study guides when correlated with their performance. Furthermore, a statistical significance existed in the medians of e-textbook and study guide usages between those students who passed the online courses compared to those who failed. This significance could also be found in students’ grade-bands. This study will be of interest to institutions with data available on students’ readership behaviour. It is relevant to the sub-theme of “inspiring innovations” as it involves data analytics for online learning.

Abstract:
The article analyses the attitude of writers of the constitutional law textbooks from the former Yugoslavia towards the Vidovdan Constitution. The author focuses on the textbooks used at the time of writing in teaching and for exam preparation of Constitutional Law at state-owned law faculties as of academic year 2020/21. However, the analysis also includes several textbooks that represent a kind of historical readings. By comparing the relevant materials, the author made an attempt to shed light on scientific, legal and even political attitude of various authors towards the Vidovdan Constitution, and indirectly towards the Yugoslav state itself. The significance of this analysis is reflected in the fact that young generations - future lawyers and members of the social elites of the states created on Yugoslav foundations, get acquainted with their constitutional history through textbooks of constitutional law.

Abstract:
The review is about textbook on television and radio communication for students, teachers of faculties and departments of journalism, as well as journalists-practitioners, prepared by the author’s team edited by Vasyl Lyzanchuk. Textbok absorbed some considerations and conclusions from previous theoretical developments, which found a new meaning here, deeper argumentation, supplemented by many interesting observations that correspond to the spirit of the time, the innovations that have appeared in recent years in the media space of Ukraine. The textbook has ten sections, each of which is designed to enrich the student with knowledge of television and radio communications, teach him or her all that a media professional should know and be able to apply it in practice. The titles of the sections indicate their practical orientation: «Basic methodical measures of functioning of information radio and television genres», «How we analyze, interpret, explain facts, events, phenomena», «Features of the creation of artistic programs on radio and television» and others. All sections of the textbook are meaningfully connected and constructed in such a way as to provide students with the opportunity to gradually, step by step to deepen their theoretical and practical knowledge of television and radio communications. This is undoubtedly the merit of the authors of the edition. The student will benefit from the numerous examples of television and radio materials prepared by the students themselves. Their creative work should convince that this work can serve as a stimulus for creative work for future journalists during their years of study. In addition to professional competence, as rightly emphasized in the textbook by Professor Vasyl Lyzanchuk, “It is very important to form in students, future journalists, socio-national competence, deep understanding of the essence of freedom of speech and responsibility for the content of the spoken word and image, to develop the belief that they are active participants in the Ukrainian state-building processes, and not intermediaries or repeaters of information”. It should be noted that the educational element is present throughout the textbook starting with the first chapter, historical (author Professor Ivan Krupskyi). While studying this textbook, students should realize that from the honor of journalists, their dignity, patriotism depends on the honor, authority, bright name of Ukraine, its future; that their assertion of Ukrainian national identity is the key to further prosperity of our state.

Oza, Shardul, and Jacobus Cilliers. What Did Children Do During School Closures? Insights from a Parent Survey in Tanzania. Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE), May 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.35489/bsg-rise-ri_2021/027.

Full text
Abstract:
In this Insight Note, we report results of a phone survey that the RISE Tanzania Research team conducted with 2,240 parents (or alternate primary care-givers) of primary school children following the school closures in Tanzania. After the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Tanzania on 16 March 2020, the government ordered all primary schools closed the following day. Schools remained closed until 29 June 2020. Policymakers and other education stakeholders were concerned that the closures would lead to significant learning loss if children did not receive educational support or engagement at home. To help stem learning loss, the government promoted radio, TV, and internet-based learning content to parents of school-age children. The primary aims of the survey were to understand how children and families responded to the school closures, the education related activities they engaged in, and their strategies to send children back to school. The survey also measures households’ engagement with remote learning content over the period of school closures. We supplement the findings of the parent survey with insights from interviews with Ward Education Officers about their activities during the school closures. The survey sample is comprised of primary care-givers (in most cases, parents) of students enrolled in Grades 3 and 4 during the 2020 school year. The survey builds on an existing panel of students assessed in 2019 and 2020 in a nationally representative sample of schools.4 The parent surveys were conducted using Computer Assisted Telephonic Interviewing (CATI) over a two-week period in early September 2020, roughly two months after the re-opening of primary schools. We report the following key findings from this survey: *Almost all (more than 99 percent) of children in our sample were back in school two months after schools re-opened. The vast majority of parents believed it was either safe or extremely safe for their children to return to school. *Only 6 percent of households reported that their children listened to radio lessons during the school closures; and a similar fraction (5.5 percent) tuned into TV lessons over the same period. Less than 1 percent of those surveyed accessed educational programmes on the internet. Households with access to radio or TV reported higher usage. *Approximately 1 in 3 (36 percent) children worked on the family farm during the closures, with most children working either 2 or 3 days a week. Male children were 6.2 percentage points likelier to work on the family farm than female children. *Households have limited access to education materials for their child. While more than 9 out of 10 households have an exercise book, far fewer had access to textbooks (35 percent) or own reading books (31 percent). *One in four parents (24 percent) read a book to their child in the last week.
