Full textThe analysis of the interface between fiber and matrix is of fundamental importance for the study of the properties of innovative and sustainable composite materials for Civil Engineering. The research topic involved the study of innovative composites to be used in the industrial or sustainable construction sector obtained from waste and/or natural materials especially in terms of mechanical performance (flexural strength and compression), physical (density, porosity, water absorption by capillarity) and thermal (thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity). These properties depend on the interaction that occurs between the constituents, intended as the dispersed phase (fibers or particles) and continuous phase (organic or inorganic matrices), as well as the percentage, distribution, orientation and degree of adhesion. The research in particular concerned the study of mortars obtained by exploiting natural and local resources, such as the common reed (Arundo donax L.), the diss (Ampelodesmos Mauritanicus), the crimsonn fountaingrass (Pennisetum Setaceum), and waste, such as the sawing mud that is produced by the cutting and polishing of marble and recycled glass from separate collection. The results demonstrated the strong influence of the percentage and the aspect ratio of the common reed fiber on the post-fracture toughness of the mortars by percentage and length. In particular, the optimal percentage is between 1 and 2% of fiber length 12cm. The experimental chemical and physical characterization of waste materials: sawing mud, coming from marble cutting and polishing plants, and glass, coming from separate collection, confirmed the feasibility of using them as raw materials for the formulation of binding systems moderately hydraulic for non-structural use. Diss fibers are certainly to be preferred over crimsonn fountaingrass fibers as a mortar additive for the best compatibility with the inorganic matrix due to both the best chemical composition and above all the best morphological characteristics. On the basis of these experimental evidences, in collaboration with the Northumbria University of Newcastle (UK), the study of eco-sustainable binding systems reinforced with diss fibers has been deepened with particular reference to the morphological aspects and the interaction between the constituents that influence the setting and hardening processes. In particular, new techniques were developed for the characterization of the mortars such as: the XRD quantitative analysis, which made it possible to monitor the progress of the carbonation reaction of the mortars according to the fiber content by quantifying the corresponding percentage of portlandite and calcite; and the technique of observation of fracture surfaces by aligning and superimposing images (Stacking Images Technique), which allows to obtain a single fully focused and sharp image of the irregular fracture surface of the sample through software processing of several images partially in focus. In this way, it is possible to identify the effective distribution of the fibers in the matrix and calculate the dispersion coefficient that can be related to the physical and mechanical properties of the mortars. For the study of the influence of the fiber-matrix interface on the physical and mechanical properties of composites, the physical and morphological properties of the fiber were assessed according to the aspect ratio and also assessed the effect of appropriate physical and chemical treatments. The results showed that the aspect ratio most influences the mechanical properties of the composites while the treatments modify the compatibility with the matrix. Finally, a brief description of each developed chapter is given below in the thesis. • Chapter 1: Description of the existing literature, concerning the role of natural fibers in organic and inorganic matrix composites, which motivated and encouraged the research activity that involved the Doctoral course: • Chapter 2: Numerical and experimental analysis of the influence of the addition of common reed fibers (Arundo donax) on the flexural properties of biolime mortars; • Chapter 3: Physical, chemical and mechanical characterization of a moderately hydraulic sustainable binder system obtained from the reuse of waste materials: sawing mud and recycled glass powder; • Chapter 4: Evaluation of the physical, mechanical and thermal properties of mortars sustainable from waste materials and reinforced with natural diss fiber (Ampelodesmos Mauritanicus) for sustainable construction; • Chapter 5: Comparison between 2 species of local plants: the diss and the more invasive crimsonn fountaingrass as possible aggregates for cement-based mortars; • Chapter 6: Conclusions and future developments

In the last years, great part of the scientific and industrial interest has been centered in the development of the composites. The majority use of material fiber glasses as of reinforcement in this type of materials has lead towards the search of alternative reinforcements able to satisfy requirements at economic level as much as environmental. The natural fibers are firm candidates to exert of reinforcement, being offered a commercial alternative. The fiber that is obtained from the jute plant is a recycleable and biodegradable fiber, and its manufacture is bound to a lower power consumption if it is compared with the manufacture of synthetic fibers. Therefore, it is a fiber whose
manipulation has a competitive cost and in addition it offers an ample market where to be acquired, conditions that makes economically viable [Gomez, I. L. and col., 1998 ].
Many polymers, specially thermoplastic are not-polars (hydrophobic), incompatible
substances with natural fibers (hydrophilic) being generated an adhesion poor. With the purpose of being able to improve this adhesion connection agents are used, reagents which the surface of fibers is treated facilitating the chemical connection with the polimeric matrix.
The work that is exposed divides in two parts, one first theoric and one second
experimental. In the first part, fundamental aspects of natural fibers and of the jute fiber are described more concretely that is tried to use like reinforcement. Also it is spoken of the composites and of its properties and finally the attention in the processes of chemical modification with connection agents is centered.
In the experimental part are exposed all and each one of the used reagents followed by the description of the theoric reactions. In addition, the technique that are described are going to be applied in the evaluation of the results with the purpose of verifying if the reactions have taken place and quantifying the modification degree. Finally, the obtained results appear. The global objective of this project is chemical modification of jute fibers and to study its properties with the purpose of using them like reinforcement in a composite material. This process requires two steps, first modify fibers incorporating a bifunctional agent able to react with the hydroxil groups. On the other hand, and once made modification, to unite the agent who has reacted with fibers, to the double connections of the precursor of the polymer, in the case of this study the monomer styrene. All this, entails to a study of the stage of modification with the purpose of evaluating the connection between the fiber and
the agent and to verify, if it is that really it occurs, a change in the properties of humidity absortion responsible for the dimensional variations of fibers. Making reference to the first section of the results, one is made caracteryzation previous of the jute fiber: his composition, concretely the wax content, resins, measurement of the fiber length with the "Kajaani" analyzer,.
Morphologic caracteryzation of the fibers occurs to know its longitudinal and crosssectional aspect. This study show a smooth fiber without knots and with a variable thickness of the primary wall. Analysis by infrared espectroscopy (FTIR) shows to a fiber formed by cellulose and, the results obtained by elemental analysis show to certain differences between his composition and the one of the pure cellulose.
The sterification reaction with two bifunctional reagents reduces the number of present hydroxil groups in the fiber giving rise to an ester functionality of smaller polarity. On the other hand, the introduced chain provides a double connection carbon-carbon able to react with the double alyphatic connection of the molecule of used monomer. Therefore, the possibility is opened of initializing the reaction with styrene. The study of the different used variables of reaction allows to deduce the effect of all and each one of them on the modification degree. To emphasize that the presence of catalyst in means, a smaller amount of solvent, more elevated value of temperature, an increase in the amount of reagent and long times of reaction favor the advance of the reaction.
In the case of the reactions made with the oleyl chloride two solvents of different nature have been used, the pyridine of polar nature and the dichloromethane of smaller polarity.
With the addition of pyridine the faying surface with the connection agent is increased, facilitating the access towards the free hydroxil groups. Therefore, the reactions of modification made in pyridine improve the accessibility and reactivity with the cellulose substrate due to an increase of the contact by swelling. In the case of the dichloromethane the accessibility does not improve and it is needed the addition of a complementary base because this solvent cannot act as it bases and therefore, the acid released during the reaction is not neutralized. The addition of triethylamine moves the reaction towards the products avoiding that the hydrochlorate acid is frees.
Of the test of dyeing made to fibers of jute modified with the oleyl chloride, the results indicate that the fibers that have been put under modification offer greater resistance due to a reduction of the number of hydroxil groups.
The second block has been made with the methacrylic anhydride one. The reactions also show significant results. Some of the processes also has been evaluated by increase of weight.
In this second block, also the degree of modification from the technique of infrared
spectroscopy has been determined. The calculation has been made starting off of the more characteristic absorption bands in infrared. Comparing the values with the obtained ones from elemental analysis it is verified that the experimental results have been reproduced satisfactorily. Also the influence of the treatment with styrene of the modified fiber has been evaluated so much with the oleyl chloride as with the methacrylic anhydride one. The polymer layer that forms upon the surface of fibers significantly diminishes the attack on the part of microorganisms and the humidity absorption. The treatment protects the fiber although the results indicate that this protection is not total. Comparison between the reactivity of both connection agents has settled down and the results of the degree of modification for equivalent reactions indicate more extensive reactions in the case of the oleyl chloride. Both agents of connection diminish hydrofobicity of fibers. Last the test of effects is described made to the set of reactions. The effect of the reaction variables is analyzed on the modification degree, indicating itself the most significant variables in the reaction between the coupling agents and the fiber: type of solvent, time, type of reagent and its concentration in means.

Abstract: The problem of urban waste accumulation has increased in recent decades and the large consumption of plastics is one of those responsible for this situation. These materiaIs have the ability to remain in the environment for many years making it difficult further to provide its correct destination. This problem was the main motivation of the work presented here. The PHB is a biodegradable thermoplastic material produced by bacteria feeding on sucrose, such microorganisms convert the sucrose in PHB. Brazil is today one of the largest producers of PHB, however this material has low mechanical properties compared to most plastics used industrially. Some mechanical propérties were improved with the addition of triacetin as agent for plasticization, but the resistance to the impact decreases with this additive. Fibers are used materiaIs in plastic matrix composite to give strength and flexibility to these materiaIs. Natural fibers have been used successfully in the attempt to reduce costs, and generate structural reinforcement composites, in addition to reducing the environmental impact of plastics. In this study were obtained from composites PHB, triacetate and Fibers of Coconut or Sisal, acetylated and non-acetylated through extrusion ~d injection, processes. The composites were characterized by Thermal Analysis, Mechanical, Spectroscopics, Microscopics and biodegradation. The composites obtained showed advantage over the array of PHB in the mechanical and performance degradation due to the addition of natural fibers and triacetate. The acetylation reaction apparently improved the interaction between the surface fiber-matrix and apparently was more successful in the sisal fiber

From this perspective, there are studies that seek to associate intrinsically conducting polymers (ICP) with polymer matrices that has good mechanical property. Among those ICP, polypyrrole (PPy) and polyaniline (PAni) has received much attention due to easy of synthesis, high environmental stability, high conductivity (10 2 S/cm) and low cost of monomers. An alternative to overcome these problems is to make in situ polymerization of the conductive polymer in the presence of another polymer that possesses good mechanical properties. Morphological, structural, electrical, mechanical and thermal properties these samples were studied. Analysis of infrared and UV-Vis-NIR spectra showed the polyaniline and polypyrrole are in doped state. The electrical conductivity of the composites showed to be dependent on the ratio rubber/ monomer, staying in the range of 10 -14 to 10 -2 S/cm. Motivation of the work was to investigate the synthesis of polyols obtained from air induced oxidation of the commercial soybean oil and use these as precursors in the preparation of polyurethane-urea hybrid coatings. Soybean oil is a feedstock that has low cost, and it comes from renewable sources. This molecule has the potential for chemical modification and use in different applications. The synthesized polyols were characterized by titration, FTIR, 1H NMR and GPC for evaluation formation of hydroxyl groups in oxidized soybean oil. After characterization polyols, were used in the synthesis of polyurethane-urea hybrid coatings for use in metal surfaces protection. The monomers used in the synthesis of hybrid coatings were oxidized soybean oil for 24 h (OSO-24), oxidized soybean oil for 48 h (OSO-48h), 4,4'-diphenyl methane diisocyanate (MDI), 3-aminopropyl trimethoxysilane (APTMS). FTIR analysis of the hybrid coatings revealed the presence of Si-O-Si bands, indicating the formation of a hybrid network, which was also identified by 29Si NMR, showing the formation of structures T0, T1, T2 and T3. SEM analysis and compositional map generated by EDS indicate that the samples with APTMS presented phase separated structures; this occurred during the difference in the relative rate of formation of urea groups when compared to urethane groups. On the other hand, the synthesized materials were amorphous and had rigid spherical shape domains with sizes between 16 nm. The films produced, when used as coatings, exhibited satisfactory mechanical behavior and excellent adhesion to metal substrates. However, its corrosion resistance is limited during of the formation of silicon rich phases.

Full textStraw-inspired metamaterials for sound absorption are investigated in this Thesis. A straw stack is idealized as a highly concentratedresonant anisotropic porous medium constituted of a periodic arrangement of densely packed cylindrical hollow tubes. The approach tothis metamaterial relies on the two-scale asymptotic homogenization of a permeable array of perfectly rigid resonators, where the physicsis further enriched by tailoring inner resonances. The main features of such sound absorbing medium are the possibility for the effectivecompressibility to become negative around the tube resonance and the drastic reduction of the effective sound speed (slow sound) at verylow frequency in the system. Moreover, an optimal configuration for sound absorption is designed, based on the critical couplingcondition, in which the energy leakage out of the open resonant system is perfectly compensated by the intrinsic losses induced by thevisco-thermal losses both in the anisotropic matrix and in the resonators. Impedance tube measurements are performed on 3-D printedsamples with controlled parameters to validate the theoretical results. This metamaterial is a sub-wavelength absorber that can achievetotal absorption at a very low frequency and possesses a quasi-band-gap around the tube resonance. Furthermore, the anisotropic nature ofthe configuration gives rise to high absorption at low-frequency range for all incidences and diffuse field excitation. It paves the way tothe design of angular and frequency selective sound absorber. To conclude, the results of this Thesis show that straw is a good candidatefor perfect sound absorption

Discovering, designing, and developing a novel material is an arduous task, involving countless hours of human effort and ingenuity. While some aspects of this process have been vastly accelerated by the advent of first-principles-based computational techniques and high throughput experimental methods, a vast ocean of untapped historical knowledge lies dormant in the scientific literature. Namely, the precise methods by which many inorganic compounds are synthesized are recorded only as text within journal articles. This thesis aims to realize the potential of this data for informing the syntheses of inorganic materials through the use of data-mining algorithms. Critically, the methods used and produced in this thesis are fully automated, thus maximizing the impact for accelerated synthesis planning by human researchers.
There are three primary objectives of this thesis: 1) aggregate and codify synthesis knowledge contained within scientific literature, 2) identify synthesis "driving factors" for different synthesis outcomes (e.g., phase selection) and 3) autonomously learn synthesis hypotheses from the literature and extend these hypotheses to predicted syntheses for novel materials. Towards the first goal of this thesis, a pipeline of algorithms is developed in order to extract and codify materials synthesis information from journal articles into a structured, machine readable format, analogous to existing databases for materials structures and properties. To efficiently guide the extraction of materials data, this pipeline leverages domain knowledge regarding the allowable relations between different types of information (e.g., concentrations often correspond to solutions).
Both unsupervised and supervised machine learning algorithms are also used to rapidly extract synthesis information from the literature. To examine the autonomous learning of driving factors for morphology selection during hydrothermal syntheses, TiO₂ nanotube formation is found to be correlated with NaOH concentrations and reaction temperatures, using models that are given no internal chemistry knowledge. Additionally, the capacity for transfer learning is shown by predicting phase symmetry in materials systems unseen by models during training, outperforming heuristic physically-motivated baseline stratgies, and again with chemistry-agnostic models. These results suggest that synthesis parameters possess some intrinsic capability for predicting synthesis outcomes. The nature of this linkage between synthesis parameters and synthesis outcomes is then further explored by performing virtual synthesis parameter screening using generative models.
Deep neural networks (variational autoencoders) are trained to learn low-dimensional representations of synthesis routes on augmented datasets, created by aggregated synthesis information across materials with high structural similarity. This technique is validated by predicting ion-mediated polymorph selection effects in MnO₂, using only data from the literature (i.e., without knowledge of competing free energies). This method of synthesis parameter screening is then applied to suggest a new hypothesis for solvent-driven formation of the rare TiO₂ phase, brookite. To extend the capability of synthesis planning with literature-based generative models, a sequence-based conditional variational autoencoder (CVAE) neural network is developed. The CVAE allows a materials scientist to query the model for synthesis suggestions of arbitrary materials, including those that the model has not observed before.
In a demonstrative experiment, the CVAE suggests the correct precursors for literature-reported syntheses of two perovskite materials using training data published more than a decade prior to the target syntheses. Thus, the CVAE is used as an additional materials synthesis screening utility that is complementary to techniques driven by density functional theory calculations. Finally, this thesis provides a broad commentary on the status quo for the reporting of written materials synthesis methods, and suggests a new format which improves both human and machine readability. The thesis concludes with comments on promising future directions which may build upon the work described in this document.
