Abstract:
This quasi-experimental study investigated the role of prior psychology knowledge and in-class retrieval activity in the testing effect. Undergraduate introductory psychology students ( N = 53) from two classes at a small liberal arts college practiced retrieving information in class with multiple-choice quizzing and concept mapping. Prior psychology knowledge was measured using a 25-item multiple-choice pretest. Both students with high and low prior psychology knowledge had higher scores on examination material that was practiced in class with retrieval-based concept mapping compared to traditional multiple-choice quizzes and to no organized in-class retrieval activity at all. Only students with high prior psychology knowledge had higher scores on quizzed material compared to no organized in-class retrieval practice, and these scores were lower than those on material that was practiced with in-class concept mapping. In comparison to administering multiple-choice quiz questions, a more useful in-class activity might be to have students, especially those with less prior psychology knowledge, practice retrieving material through free recall and connection building activities such as a concept map.

Full text
Abstract:
A Möbius band can be formed by bending a sufficiently long rectangular unstretchable material sheet and joining the two short ends after twisting by 180 ° . This process can be modelled by an isometric mapping from a rectangular region to a developable surface in three-dimensional Euclidean space. Attempts have been made to determine the equilibrium shape of a Möbius band by minimizing the bending energy in the class of mappings from the rectangular region to the collection of developable surfaces. In this work, we show that, although a surface obtained from an isometric mapping of a prescribed planar region must be developable, a mapping from a prescribed planar region to a developable surface is not necessarily isometric. Based on this, we demonstrate that the notion of a rectifying developable cannot be used to describe a pure bending of a rectangular region into a Möbius band or a generic ribbon, as has been erroneously done in many publications. Specifically, our analysis shows that the mapping from a prescribed planar region to a rectifying developable surface is isometric only if that surface is cylindrical with the midline being the generator. Towards providing solutions to this issue, we discuss several alternative modelling strategies that respect the distinction between the physical constraint of unstretchability and the geometrical notion of developability.

Abstract:
Mind Mapping is a learning model that can make it easier for students to understand and remember subject matter and can map material into students' minds by taking creative and innovative notes based on the material they understand. When carrying out the learning process sometimes there are some problems experienced by students. The formulation of the problem determined in this study is what are the problems felt by students when the teacher implements the mind mapping learning model in PAI learning in class XI SMA Negeri 1 Lembah Gumanti. The purpose of this study is to describe what problems are felt by students when the teacher implements the mind mapping learning model in PAI learning in Class XI SMA Negeri 1 Lembah Gumanti. This research is a qualitative research with descriptive type. The data in this study the authors obtained by using observation techniques, interviews, and documentation. The data was analyzed through three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the research that the author conducted showed that when the teacher implemented the mind mapping learning model there were problems felt by the students, both from the cognitive aspect, the affective aspect, and the student's psychomotor aspect. The problems experienced by students in cognitive aspects such as the ability to understand learning materials, the ability to store the acquisition of learning outcomes in the form of material points made into mind mapping and students feel out of ideas in creativity when making mind mapping. The problems experienced by students in the affective aspect are the low interest and motivation of students to learn and easily give up if there are obstacles in the process of making mind mapping, and the last problem experienced by students in the psychomotor aspect is that students do not summarize the material into points but make ideas such as paragraphs. , there is no central image in mind mapping, students make mind mapping with the position of the paper in portrait, students make mind mapping on the top of the paper not in the middle of the paper, and use lined paper in making mind mapping.

Abstract:
This research is focused on improving students' ability in writing descriptive text with the mind mapping method. Mind mapping is one of the methods of learning that focuses on taking notes that help us remember the material and can improve understanding of the material, help organize material and provide new insights. With this method, students become more active, creativity, and can receive lessons easily. Although the descriptive text is not too difficult, there are still many students who find it difficult. The purpose of this study was to determine the students' ability in writing descriptive texts with the mind mapping method and to find out how teachers teach descriptive texts. This is qualitative research. In collecting data, the researcher used text analysis and observation. The writing components analyzed were idea development, idea organization, grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation. The results of this study illustrate that the mind mapping method helps improve students' ability in writing descriptive texts, as can be seen from the way students develop ideas and organize ideas into a paragraph. Behind all that, the researcher also found the students' biggest difficulties in writing descriptive texts. Difficulties in grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics also have errors, but the errors are not significant.

Abstract:
The shape of the temperature vs. specific entropy diagram of a working fluid is very important to understanding the behavior of fluid during the expansion phase of the organic Rankine cycle or similar processes. Traditional wet-dry-isentropic classifications of these materials are not sufficient; several materials remain unclassified or misclassified, while materials listed in the same class might show crucial differences. A novel classification, based on the characteristic points of the T–s diagrams was introduced recently, listing eight different classes. In this paper, we present a map of these classes for a model material, namely, the van der Waals fluid in reduced temperature (i.e., reduced molecular degree of freedom) space; the latter quantity is related to the molar isochoric specific heat. Although van der Waals fluid cannot be used to predict material properties quantitatively, the model gives a very good and proper qualitative description. Using this map, some peculiarities related to T–s diagrams of working fluids can be understood.

The Independent Curriculum gives teachers the freedom to choose material but focuses on strengthening the ability to use English in six language skills, namely listening, speaking, reading, viewing, writing, and presenting in an integrated manner, in various types of texts. The minimum learning outcomes for these six English skills refer to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (CEFR) and equivalent to level B1. The material for giving sympathy and appreciation is one of the materials given in class 11 semester 3. Even though the context of giving sympathy and appreciation is a common thing that happens in everyday contexts, for students to express it in English is quite a high difficulty. This case study occurred in learning English in class 11 Software Engineering 2. 30 participants involved in this study. Only 3 students were able to make sentences expressing sympathy after being given instructions by the teacher, the rest experienced quite high difficulties and needed intensive guidance to be able to complete the task. The main obstacles are lack of vocabulary, lack of grammatical knowledge and low motivation in learning English.

Three students with behavior disorders who exhibited difficulty with reading in content area courses learned to use a computer program to create cognitive maps of the reading material required for class. Using a modified multiple-probe design across behaviors or stimulus sets, replicated across students, allowed for the evaluation of student performance on written and oral quizzes covering content area information. All students improved reading comprehension of content material with this intervention, and were able to read their textbooks independent of teacher assistance or tutelage. These findings are significant because students who previously struggled with learning class material from text-based presentation can successfully accomplish these tasks given cognitive mapping reading strategy and access to a computer to create the cognitive maps.

Abstract:
Abstract Columbia College Chicago is a leader in the arts and media. While the Science & Mathematics Department houses a major and 3 minors (including one in biology), the majority of the students matriculating through our courses are fulfilling general education requirements. One popular course is The Biology of AIDS: Life of a Virus. After teaching this course for nearly a decade, the HIV replication cycle continues to be a tough concept for students to grasp. This semester I utilized the free concept mapping software, Cmap, to help students tie together concepts, and prepare better for quizzes and exams, with the ultimate goal to reinforce the steps of the replication cycle. Because I found students were unfamiliar with, and thus initially uncomfortable with, the concept mapping approach, I introduced the methodology during week 2, starting with simplistic maps which required less input from the students, who worked in groups to complete. As the students became more comfortable with the practice, I provided fewer completed “concepts” and less verbal help. The students began to expect (and want) the concept maps, requesting them even when I didn’t have some prepared! When that happened, I “flipped” the concept and had the students create their own maps in groups to aid in their comprehension of the material. In the end, it was difficult to assess whether students performed “better” on quizzes and exams because of the concept mapping (no control group, varying levels of preparation, small “n,” etc.), but students did appreciate another approach to studying the material. In addition, the use of concept maps helped me better organize my lecture slides and connect them to student assessment.

Abstract:
Spectral libraries are the data archives of spectral signatures measured on natural and/or man-made materials. Here, the objective is to build a soil spectral library of the Czech soils (SSL-CZ). Further on, the overall aim is to apply diffuse reflectance spectroscopy as a tool for digital soil mapping. An inevitable part of the library is a metadata database that stores the corresponding auxiliary information on the soils: type of material (soil, parent material), sample preparation, location of the sample with geographic coordinates, soil classification, morphological features, soil laboratory measurements – chemical, physical, and potential biological properties, geophysical features of and climatological information on the sample location. The metadata database consists of seven general tables (General, Spatial, Soil class, Environmental, Auxiliary, Analytical and Spectra) relationally linked together. The stored information allows for a wide range of analyses and for modelling developments of digital soil mapping applications. An example of partial least-square regression (PLSR) modelling for soil pH and clay content with 0.84 and 0.68 coefficients of determination is provided on the subset of the collected data. Currently, the SSL-CZ database contains more than 500 records in the first phase of development. Spectral reflectance signatures are stored in the range of 350 to 2500 nm with a step of 1 nm measured by ASD FieldSpec 3. The soil spectral library developed is fully compatible with Global Soil Spectral Library (Soil Spectroscopy Group).
